Yakuza kiwami like a dragon switch

Yakuza is an iconic series. It’s gone from being lauded as one of Sega’s finest niche releases to one that inspires spin-offs, an Amazon show, and more mainstream acclaim. But it’s never found a place for itself on a Nintendo system. Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first Like a Dragon game, changes that, as Sega and Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio finally brought the game to the Nintendo Switch. It was worth waiting for, to be sure, as it is an irably done port of a wonderful game.

Given the nature of the Like a Dragon series, Yakuza Kiwami is very narrative-heavy in its first few chapters. This means that, due to all the cinematics and isolated area, it makes a good first impression. Kazuma Kiryu and his sworn brother Akira Nishikiyama are meeting at their favorite bar, Serena, to celebrate a friend named Yumi’s birthday. Kiryu is the Dojima Family’s feared Dragon of Dojima and on the verge of getting his  family. However, after Sohei Dojima assaults Yumi and Nishiki kills him for it, Kiryu takes the fall, is sent to prison, is expelled from the clan, and returns to Kamurocho 10 years later. Yumi is missing, as is 10 billion yen from the Tojo Clan, the third chairman Masaru Sera is dead, Nishiki is nothing like Kiryu re, and everyone seems to be after a little girl named Haruka. And so, Kiryu is immediately thrust into the politics of the underworld and protecting the child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa4LtKgIVtA&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

However, as this is a Like a Dragon game, Yakuza Kiwami isn’t limited to that. Over the 13 chapters, you discover the exact truth behind what’s happening in the Tojo clan, as well as what went on with Yumi and Nishiki. There is more to the story, thanks to elements that focus on what Nishiki went through. Goro Majima pops up more often for challenges and comic relief, thanks to the Majima Everywhere system that is also tied to the new Dragon Style that s the existing Beast, Brawler, and Rush ones. Not to mention, there are more Substories than before and you can take part in the MesuKing minigame. So you’re getting a full, thrilling adventure in a pretty large city with a lot of optional extra activities and sidequests.

My biggest concern heading into Yakuza Kiwami on the Switch involved combat. The system has always been so fluid, fast, and furious on other platforms. I was fairly certain smaller, more intimate fights would be fine. A one-on-one or maybe even three-on-one situation? Sure. fortunately, in the first few chapters of this installment Kiryu does find himself against hordes of enemies or bigger fights. These worked and felt fine on the Switch. The framerate seemed fairly consistent. To be frank, many fights that don’t involve a “boss” character go rather swiftly, so things would often wrap up before I had a chance to mentally note if the framerate seemed to dip.

The only real sacrifices I noticed to get the game running on the system involved visuals. Naturally, it doesn’t look as striking as it did when I played it on the PS4. Some textures while exploring Kamurocho didn’t look as sharp. I noticed occasional pop-ins at some spots for environmental objects around town. (For example, one of the first instances involved the trash at the end of the street when looking for the Suspicious Man hiding behind a sign.) I think I’d be tempted to say the Switch release of Yakuza Kiwami probably resembles the PS3 version of the Like a Dragon game more than the PS4 one, but at the end of the day it is fine.

Especially since in other areas, everything about Yakuza Kiwami is pretty great. The loading times are minimal, given the size and nature of the game. I expected it to take longer when going between areas and altercations, but nope! You’re all set in seconds. It’s easy to play and enjoy. The story is still fantastic. The Substories are still fun. I still love Pocket Circuit.

The Switch version of Yakuza Kiwami might not be the absolutely ideal way to play the first game in the Like a Dragon series, but it runs quite well on the system and remains an absolute delight. The port is quite capable and runs better than I expected to. It would probably look better on another console or PC, but the joy that comes from actually playing an entry on a Nintendo system and see it go so well more than makes up for that.

Yakuza Kiwami is available on the PS3 in Japan and on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC worldwide.

Yakuza Kiwami Switch

A Nintendo Switch version of Yakuza Kiwami, the first Like a Dragon game, is on the way, as announced at the Nintendo Indie World and Partner Showcase on August 27, 2024. The new version will launch for the Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024, ing versions already available on the PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Kiwami is a remake of the first Yakuza game, also known as the Ryu Ga Gotoku or Like a Dragon series, and it originally released in Japan back in 2016. The new Switch version looks to preserve all the features new and old, like the four different fighting styles, improvised weaponry, and Majima Everywhere system. The trailer also emphasized the game's well-known side stories and minigames, including baseball and Mahjong, or bonding with Kiryu's adoptive daughter Haruka.

You can watch the trailer from the Nintendo Direct via YouTube below:

Back in June, 2024, the entire Yakuza series for PC arrived on GOG's store, without any DRM packaged with it. Meanwhile, earlier this month the iconic song Baka Mitai received a vinyl release, sung by Kiryu's voice actor Takaya Kuroda.

Yakuza Kiwami will be the first Like a Dragon game on the Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024. The game is already available on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Yakuza Games Available DRM-Free via GOG

The entire Yakuza series, which covers games from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 6, is available on GOG now. It is also on sale for 70% off. It is DRM-free as well. That means you can play it on your computer without needing to activate it first or having to remain online. For a limited time, you can get the complete series for $33.92, with the original price being $111.98.

The Yakuza Complete Series games follows the saga of Kiryu, along with other characters that he meets along the way. Other playable protagonists include Goro Majima, Shun Akiyama, and Taiga Saejima. Kiryu’s story primarily takes place in Kamurocho, and follows his desire to leave the yakuza life behind and work at an orphanage. However, the troubles of the Tojo Clan pursue him, and he has to help out against conspiracies that threaten the balance of the city.

As for Yakuza 7 (Yakuza: Like a Dragon), the story shifts to Ichiban Kasuga. The mainline series will follow him now, as the eighth entry also stars him in the trailer. But Kiryu will still return in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. He sports a new look as well as a new fighting style.

The Yakuza Complete Series is on sale on GOG, though it’s unclear how long the discount will last, and is available for the Windows PC. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will come out on November 9, 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will launch for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC in early 2024.

The PlayStation Blog has revealed the free games that those with a PlayStation Plus Extra or subscription can get for August. These games will appear on August 16, 2022 for players at the appropriate tier. There will be a total of eleven games that will be available, with three Yakuza games as the main highlights.

The PlayStation Plus games for August are:

  • Yakuza Kiwami 2
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

  • Monopoly Plus

As previously announced, the Yakuza titles added to the game catalog puts most of the Kiryu Saga in reach of PS Plus Extra and . In of chronology, Yakuza 0 is the first game of Kiryu’s saga, whereas Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the first game in the series. Its sequel, Yakuza Kiwami 2, takes place directly after the previous one, using gameplay and graphical enhancements developed for Yakuza 6. It also features Goro Majima as a playable character, similar to how he is in 0. This is something exclusive to the Kiwami version of the game and not in the original. Yakuza 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be added to the PS Plus game catalog at a later date.

Meanwhile, two of the titles are multiplayer experiences. Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game. Players can choose to play as Survivor or Killer. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a similarly multiplayer experience, allowing you to create a team of up to 3 players. Yakuza series PS Plus

A new Yakuza saga began with Yakuza: Like A Dragon, but Sony wants to let PS Plus subscribers have a chance at seeing the whole series. The Yakuza series will PS Plus at the Extra and tiers in 2022. That means 8 games, including Yakuza: Like A Dragon, will be available to PS Plus subscribers.

The one wrinkle is that the exact selection of the Yakuza series on PS Plus varies depending on the subscription tier. The offering starts in August 2022, with Yakuza: Like A Dragon. It's part of the PS Plus August 2022 slate, and is available to all PS Plus from Essential tier up. The rest of the games in the Yakuza series are split across PS Plus Extra and tiers.

Extra tier subscribers gain access to Yakuza 0Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Yakuza 6: The Song of LifeYakuza 0 is a prequel to the series, taking place in the 1980s and showing how Kazuma Kiryu earned his reputation. Yakuza Kiwami is an enhanced remaster of the original PS2-era Yakuza, using tech and gameplay based on Yakuza 0Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a remake of Yakuza 2, but based on the gameplay and graphics of Yakuza 6Yakuza 6 is the last game in the Kazuma Kiryu saga, and sees the Dragon of Dojima become a foster father.

Subscribers at the tier of PS Plus get the remaining Yakuza series games in remastered form later in 2022. Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, and Yakuza 5 Remastered are all exclusive to the PS Plus tier. Unlike the Kiwami titles, the Remastered Yakuza games are more straight ports, and don't incorporate significant changes to gameplay or story. Yakuza 3 Remastered, though, features all the content that was cut from the original localized release of Yakuza 3 on PS3. Back then, the Yakuza series was unpopular and Sega deemed it infeasible to localize a number of activities and substories, opting to cut them to bring the project to a more manageable size.

Here's a full listing of the games per tier. Each tier includes the offerings for the tier below.

  • PS Plus Essential
    • Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4, PS5)
  • PS Plus Extra
    • Yakuza 0 (PS4)
    • Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
    • Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)
    • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PS4)
  • PS Plus
    • Yakuza 3 Remastered (PS4)
    • Yakuza 4 Remastered (PS4)
    • Yakuza 5 Remastered (PS4)

The Yakuza series s PS Plus starting in August. The games are all available sold separately, and the Yakuza Remastered titles are available as a bundle.

It’s getting to be that time of year. An array of winter holidays are coming up. That might mean you’ll have a lot more time to spend playing a game or two, due to having time off of school or work. Maybe there will be an opportunity to play with friends or family you don’t often see. Basically, there are a lot of possibilities, and we wanted to share some games that we’d suggest playing over this holiday season.

games to play over holidays christmas animal crossing new horizons

This might be a bit of an obvious one, but it’s a very good time to head back to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The latest winter update paved the way for Toy Day, which means you’ll have something to do at Christmas if you’re social distancing. But even before that, there’s a good reason to head back. Puppies. Well, I mean, not just puppies. There’s a wide selection of toys at Nook’s Cranny in addition to the very good dogs. Snow should be falling too, in case you want to build a snowperson. — Jenni

games for the holidays fate

Holidays are usually associated with extended vacation time, but sometimes that's not always available to everyone. Jobs, family situations, and in this case, the ongoing pandemic might mean that not everyone can enjoy some time comfy on the couch, their brains buried in a big, deep video game.

That might happen to me this year, and if it's happening to you, I'd recommend a game you can play while taking care of other business, be it food prep, multitasking while taking care of year-end tasks at the day job, or just enjoying yourself while still being present for a family Zoom call.

To that end, visual novels like Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, or Granblue Fantasy might do just the trick, being available on a phone or a portable Switch. All that might just happen this holiday, at least between sessions of Fate/Grand Order, which will undoubtedly run its next Christmas event soon enough. — Josh

picross holiday games

My holidays are usually sporadically paced. I'll have game time, but it could be hours or minutes, and generally I need to be ready to shift gears to some other activity. To that end: it's a great time for Picross. It's handheld. It's bite-sized. You can also binge on puzzles for an hour or two if you want. It pulls your attention when you need that, but you can always pause and pick things up later too. Mario's Super Picross is on the Switch eShop, but some of the newer Picross S releases are full-featured and more comfortable to play, and worth paying to grab.

Also: Picross is just generally good in any context. — Graham

yakuza kiwami

December has always been an important month in the Yakuza series, with some of the games set sometime during that pivotal month. That's why Yakuza Kiwami (or even Yakuza 5 for that matter) is potentially one of the best holiday games out there. While it won't have the same kind of seasonal cheer as something more lighthearted or jovial, Yakuza Kiwami is like watching an interactive crime drama with friends, family, and loved ones. You get intrigue, plot-twists, and action aplenty, which can provide a great source of entertainment over the long break. If you're the kind of person that agrees with the sentiment that Die Hard is the perfect winter holiday film, then Yakuza Kiwami will be the right for you. — Kazuma

shenmue 2

Years ago, I spent my entire holiday break searching for Lan Di on the streets of Hong Kong in Shenmue 2, and it’s always been a happy memory for me. There was this captivating mixture of mystery, tense action, and strangely-soothing normalcy about the game that made it suit just about any experience I was in the mood for over the break. The hunt for Ryo’s father’s killer took me to a world that felt vibrant and alive, filled with people I loved to talk to and learn more about (whether because they were interesting or ridiculous). It doesn’t really have much to do with the holidays, but its meandering spirit, filled with all manner of emotions, made it perfect for a time of rare quiet in my life. I love the freedom to do whatever that comes with the holidays, and Shenmue 2 embodies this spirit for me. — Joel

persona 5

Dating back to Persona 3 Portable, I’ve always had a thing for playing Persona games during the holidays. There’s just something extra comforting about hunkering down with some Persona and hot cocoa. I think that Persona 5 Royal would be a great title to play over the holidays, especially if you haven’t played the original Persona 5. That said, keep in mind that it can easily take up to 100 hours to beat, so you’re in for a long ride! — Sato

pokemon crown tundra

The newest Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC released about six weeks ago, and I have been trying to find time to play it since launch. With the holiday, I might finally be able to, at the very least, the content. At this point, I’m almost glad I had to wait because these games, like their predecessors, are perfect games for the holidays.

I’ll it that there’s an element of nostalgia present in my appraisal, as I did spend multiple Christmas days catching Pokémon instead of “being part of the family.” But fond memories aside, there are practical reasons that the games are well-suited for the holidays.

For starters, Pokemon games can be played in very short bursts, which is a long-standing truth that took me years to acknowledge. I’ve found that the experience fits comfortably in the small spaces between wrapping presents and lengthy family phone calls. Heck, when I’m feeling daring, I can even hatch some Pokemon eggs during lengthy family phone calls without anyone catching on.

The games, and the Nintendo Switch itself, are unparalleled travel companions, as well. I hope traveling to visit family is more feasible next year. I’ve just learned that my younger cousins are getting a Nintendo Switch for Christmas, and I look forward to the possibility of playing Pokémon with them on Christmas day so that they can avoid a lecture about how it’s impolite to ignore your family and “fight Pikachus on the the Nintendo.” — Ben

ring fit adventure

While I'll be playing several games over the holiday break, the one I know will be part of my morning routine is Ring Fit Adventures. With all the gingerbread cookies and cakes I plan on baking and consuming, it's only right that I keep chasing Dragaux. Keeping those healthy habits going makes it easier to stick with them. If I let it slide until the New Year, it would be that much tougher to get going again. — Annette

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions

If you like anime and soccer, I'd recommend Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions for you this holiday season. This game comes the closest to re-enacting an anime show, even when compared to other anime-based games. In addition to doing an awesome job in reproducing character moves from both the manga and anime, the game's story is also designed in such a way that it makes you feel like you're marathoning an actual anime show! Once you're done with a New Hero season, you can either create another Hero, experiment with Dream Teams, or even test your skills online during the remaining days of your holiday break! — Kite

parasite eve siliconera

Parasite Eve is an excellent game to play during the holidays. The story isn't Christmas-themed, but the atmosphere during its events is so very end-of-the-year. Made during Square's "Golden Era," the story takes place in New York, starting on Christmas Eve. You play as Aya Brea, an officer at the NYPD investigating a supernatural phenomenon where of the audience at Carnegie Hall burst into flames. The story goes wild from there and it doesn't let up.

To over-simplify, Parasite Eve is a JRPG with body horror influenced in part by The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the incredible score from Yoko Shimomura that blends trance, prog rock, and electronica. For me, there's a unique and dreadful feeling during the holidays in a big city. It's oppressive, cold, heavy--everyone's mind is occupied, and it feels like something big is coming to an end. — Oni

— Oni

Yakuza series 15th anniversary - 151.5 hour long stream

Sega will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Yakuza series in Japan with a massive 151.5 hour-long gameplay stream. It will run from December 2, 2020, at 13:00 to December 8, 2020, at 20:30. All times listed here are JST (UTC+9). [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

During most of the stream duration, the series developers and other related staff will try to finish every numbered mainline Yakuza beat-em-up action-adventure game released on the PlayStation 4, from Yakuza Kiwami all the way to Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. Special guests are also expected to appear on the stream every time the clock hits 20:00 in Japan.

The celebration will culminate with another live stream on December 8, 2020—the day the Yakuza series marks its 15th anniversary—at 20:00 JST. Japanese voice actors Takaya Kuroda and Kazuhiro Nakaya, who voiced the series protagonists Kazuma Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga, respectively, will also be present at this stream as guests. The series' general director Toshihiro Nagoshi, studio representative and producer Daisuke Sato, and chief producer Masayoshi Yokoyama will look back at the history of Yakuza before revealing future plans for the popular series.

The first-ever Yakuza game was released on the PlayStation 2 on December 8, 2005, in Japan—where it is better known as Ryu ga Gotoku (Like a Dragon). The latest numbered title in Japan, Ryu ga Gotoku 7, saw a drastic genre shift to RPG. It was localized westwards as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and it is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. The new RPG will also make its way to PlayStation 5 on March 2, 2021.

yakuza free play days

Clear your schedules for Kiryu-chan. Yakuza free play days are here. Provided people have Xbox Live Gold, that is. Microsoft and Sega announced the offer, which lets people play Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 until October 4, 2020.

During the event, people can copies of all three games from the Microsoft Store. They can then play as much as they want. Once the weekend is over, all you’ll have are the save files and access will be taken back. (Though, you could always buy copies and continue.) Each game, if you rush and don’t complete side stories, will probably take between 20 and 30 hours, so it sadly wouldn't be possible to completely beat each one. (However, people could possibly get through one of them.)

Microsoft and Sega have been quite cozy lately. The recent activity with the Yakuza series is one example. For instance, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the Xbox Series X launch games, but it won’t come to the PlayStation 5 until March 2021. We also have Phantasy Star Online 2 to point to. The Xbox One is the only console it’s available on outside Japan, and there are even Xbox Game Ultimate Perks for it.

Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 are available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. All three games will be a part of the Yakuza free play days for Xbox Live Gold until October 4, 2020.

The Yakuza Kiwami Xbox One version has arrived. It and the Windows 10 iterations have arrived. People can pick up digital copies to own forever. Or, if someone is an Xbox Game subscriber, they will find this updated remake of the original game on the service.

As a reminder, Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the PlayStation 2 game. While the story is the same and follows Kazuma Kiryu as he protects a young girl named Haruka, tries to find her mother, and deals with warring Yakuza clans immediately after getting out of prison for a crime he didn’t commit. New story events have been added for this installment. There’s also the Majima Everywhere system, where Kiryu’s rival Goro Majima can and will pop out of unexpected places to challenge you.

Here’s a launch trailer celebrating the Yakuza Kiwami Xbox One debut.

This is one of many Yakuza Xbox One releases. Back in November 2019, Sega confirmed it would be bringing the series to it and Windows 10 PCs, with Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2 as the three planned titles. With Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami Xbox One versions around, only one of the “early 2020” releases is left.

So long as you have a free , you can hop on and start tuning in to music from Yakuza 0, Yakuza 1 & 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza: Dead Souls, Yakuza Ishin, Yakuza Kenzan, and Yakuza Kiwami. [Thanks, Tracker_TD!]
