Neon Genesis Evangelion will return to White Cat Project with swimsuit outfits for everyone. The collaboration started on August 9, 2024 and will run until August 22, 2024. [Thanks, Nordot!]

During this event, you’ll be able to get Ikari Shinji, Ayanami Rei, Shikinami Asuka Langley, Makinami Mari Illustrious, and Nagisa Kaworu in the gacha. All of these characters are from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series timeline rather than the original show, much like most collaborations with Neon Genesis Evangelion today. You’ll also be able to get a Jewel Pack that lets you change the characters into their Summer Festival Version outfits.

Here are the Summer Festival Versions of the Evangelion characters as they appear in White Cat Project:

The last time Evangelion appeared in White Cat Project was in 2021. Back then, you could get the Spear of Longinus for free if you completed a specific quest. You could also get the original version of Rei Ayanami after completing the story, and you would have needed the Rebuild version to unlock her. All of the character art for this year’s Evangelion collaboration are, by default, the same as 2021’s.

White Cat Project is available on mobile devices. It is only available in Japanese and within Japan.

Chainsaw Man Shironeko Project

The fantasy world of mobile RPG White Cat Project (a.k.a. Shironeko Project) is getting a visit from Public Safety's newest Devil Hunter. A newly announced Chainsaw x Man White Cat Project crossover will add Denji to the playable roster. The crossover kicks off on November 30, 2022 in Japan. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

The Chainsaw ManWhite Cat Project crossover will feature an original story starring Denji. He'll be voiced by Kikunosuke Toya, his voice actor from the anime. Toya also recorded a brief hype message for potential players, available at this link. The Dengeki preview included a look at Denji's character art.

Developer Colopl ed a brief teaser for the even on its YouTube channel. Below you can see previews of gameplay from the Chainsaw Man x White Cat Project crossover.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hwuKEHuNkUU

Denji appears rendered in the super-deformed 3D style befitting White Cat Project characters. As in the game, he moves freely about the battlefield, attacking enemies in isometric view. Players will actually control Denji in his human form at first. They can then transform into Denji's Chainsaw form, which changes his fighting style and amps up the properties of his attacks. The teaser doesn't specify how Denji fits into the game's combat mechanics, but based on his fighting style, he may be a Cross Saber character. Denji can also relax in the in-game relaxation areas.

The White Cat Project crossover event with Chainsaw Man begins on November 30, 2022. The game is available on iOS and Android in Japan. Other anime crossovers with the game include Neon Genesis Evangelion.

COLOPL, the developers of White Cat Project, have announced that proceedings for the continued lawsuit with Nintendo have risen to 9.6 billion yen. In February 2021, Nintendo claimed 4.95 billion yen in damages. However due to how long the lawsuit has continued the number continues to rise. On April 13, 2021 COLOPOL released a statement regarding the proceedings of the still on-going case. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Due to the status of the case, the claim has now effectively doubled from its number in February 2021. This is largely due to the on-going nature of the lawsuit and the time that has ed since the case originally opened. Nintendo originally filed a complaint against COLOPOL regarding copyright infringement due to certain control schemes in White Cat Project, which then escalated into a lawsuit. The lawsuit originally opened in 2018, and has been on-going ever since.

Similar to COLOPL's previous statements, the developer insists that they have not infringed on any copyrighted control schemes. However, in February 2020, COLOPL made some changes to White Cat Project's controls. That being said, the developer did not mention if this was due to the potential infringement. A video was released alongside this change, to further demonstrate the changes.

White Cat Project is immediately available to Japanese consumers for Android and iOS devices.

Nintendo White Cat Project Colopl Lawsuit

White Cat Project developer and publisher Colopl has released a statement, stating that claims in damages over a patent related lawsuit with Nintendo has risen to 4.95 billion yen. The lawsuit originally began in January 2018, but is currently ongoing. Due to this, the original amount of 4.4 billion yen has been raised due to various fees that have accumulated over time. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

However, Colopl continues to assert that they are "confident that our game does not infringe upon Nintendo's patent rights," and that the developer and publisher will continue to stand by that view.

Originally, Nintendo had filed complaints against Colopl in 2016. When the developer and publisher explained to the company that it had not infringed upon any patent, Nintendo then filed for a lawsuit in 2018.

In February 2020, Colopl announced that it would be changing some of the control schemes in White Cat Project. However, there was no mention that this was due to the current on-going lawsuit with Nintendo. Originally, White Cat Project featured a control scheme that was patented by Nintendo which involved ‘the special technology used to operate a joystick over a touch .' Alongside the update in February, Colopl also released a video demonstrating the change in control scheme.

White Cat Project is immediately available to Japanese consumers for Android and iOS devices.

People who have been following Siliconera may that there is an ongoing lawsuit between Nintendo and Colopl over the usage of their patented processes in White Cat Project. Colopl announced that it will be changing the control scheme for how skills are activated. While isn't a hard confirmation of Nintendo's win, does mean that it is essentially itting there was some issue or fault.

This comes after stealth changes to the game's control scheme for movement, as we explained in our previous write-up. The lawsuit included five patent infringements on Colopl's part, and this seems to address yet another one of these claims.

Here's a look at how skills are changed from activating when you let go on the skill tab, to activating when touching the skill tab:

In the message on Twitter, Colopl acknowledges that this has to do with the lawsuit with Nintendo that continues on to this day. However, the company claimed that White Cat Project will not end service due to this lawsuit and asked players for their understanding on this control method change. The company will continue developing and improving the game and hopes players will continue to it.

It’s almost been a year since the fourth hearing for the lawsuit of Nintendo vs Colopl, and it has continued on to this day, with the eighth hearing held on July 12, 2019. That said, it’s not unusual for lawsuits to drag on for years. [Thanks, Tmiyadera 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!]

As a reminder, the lawsuit started with five patent infringement claims from Nintendo, stating that they were infringed upon for the popular smartphone title White Cat Project. This included the ‘Punicon’ wrist strap thumb stylus promoted for games on the Nintendo DS.

nintendo colopl 2

The 4th hearing left off with Nintendo preparing responses to Colopl’s claims that their patents were null in the first place due to some appearing in other games beforehand. That said, despite claiming from the start that they were not infringing on any matter, Colopl stealthily changed the method that movement in White Cat Project worked. Originally, it was controlled with a circular range of movement, but after the change, the range of movement uses a rhombular shape instead. This change was made with no official notification to players.

Of course, Nintendo discovered this, and used this as a counterargument to Colopl’s previous claims that their patents were null. That said, this bought Colopl time, and also lowered the chances of White Cat Project ending service, although it increased the chance that they will lose the lawsuit.

Additionally, Colopl also changed the way that White Cat Project shows silhouettes when the player character is hidden behind objects to show only a stencil outline rather than the previous method. (This one was given player notification.) This change further increased the chances of White Cat Project surviving, but was akin to itting there was something wrong in the first place.

This seemed to be a theme in the hearings, with Colopl buying time for their game, and Nintendo using these changes to chip away at the previous claims. And Colopl throwing more barely-qualified examples of games that null Nintendo’s patents again and again. And so the hearings will go on to 2020.

shironeko new project 2

Colopl has updated Shironeko New Project’s home page, which gives more details on the whale-esque flying island, some other structures you’ll find in-game, as well as an anime coming in 2020.

A Full Look at the Flying Island

shironeko new project 3 2

For this second wave of information, we’d like to show off what it’s like inside the whale-shaped floating island that was also seen in the trailer. This is a picture of what it looks like from a bird’s eye view. Apart from having man-made structures like what seems to be a park, we can also see that it has a pond.

A first look at the internal structure of the floating island!

shironeko new project 9

shironeko new project 4

In the area where the whale’s stomach would be located, you can see an expansive living space. As you progress in the game, several facilities will appear at the stone area, and the floating island will get livelier.

Facilities: Guild

shironeko new project 8

Out of the many facilities aboard the floating island, here we’re showing off the Guild! The Guild is basically the place where you come to manage your quests. Taking up quests at the Guild will become a routine activity for the player.

Blacksmith

shironeko new project 10

Next up is the Blacksmith! You can buy weapons and armor, and upgrade them here.

shironeko new project 1

Finally, an anime for White Cat Project has also been announced, which will be a retelling of the game’s 3rd year anniversary event, “Zero Chronicle – The first sin”. The anime will air in 2020, same as the game’s release date.

Shironeko New Project will release for Nintendo Switch in 2020. Check out an interview with the producer on why the platform choice, and how it’s different here.

The Nintendo v Colopl lawsuit, which we reported on back in January 2018, continues to drag on despite Colopl announcing a White Cat Project game for the Nintendo Switch. Colopl’s side has on multiple times exhibited behavior such as coming late to the hearing, and needlessly dragging out issues without cooperation. Both parties met up for a fourth time recently to hopefully resolve the issues once and for all. [Thanks, Tmiyadera!]

friend list

In the second round of hearings, Nintendo added a sixth patent infringement over a particular method of connecting and recognizing mutual friends across devices. The third round was mainly spent by Colopl refuting this new claim, and as such the rebuttal for the original five patent infringements were pushed to this fourth hearing.

The main takeaway from this fourth hearing is Colopl’s shocking (and late) additional stance that Nintendo’s patents are in fact invalid, thanks to games earlier than their patent supposedly already using that process before Nintendo. For example, the ‘Punicon’ touch joystick process was already used in Nobunaga’s Ambition Online and Phantasy Star Online on Windows PC, claims Colopl. While the main input method is different, the process of dragging the mouse, which would show a short or long bar depending on how far you’re moving, is the same.

Meanwhile, Colopl also claims that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 Professional’s Standby Mode uses the same process that would later be patented for Super Mario Advance’s Sleep Mode, and so forth.

The problem with Colopl’s claims is that this late attempt at changing their stance is quite unnatural and a risky maneuver that relies on other parties and the judge. Furthermore, using various methods to buy time, Colopl have still yet to show any reasonable evidence via source code or otherwise, that they have not infringed on Nintendo’s patents.

Nintendo is quite likely to win the lawsuit, which has 39.33 million yen (roughly $346,882 USD) in damages at stake. In the previous hearings, Nintendo have been laying out the case with clear logic, while Colopl has spent most of the time up until this fourth hearing arguing semantics.

The next hearing for Nintendo v Colopl, where Nintendo is set to prepare rebuttals against these new claims, is set for December 5, 2018.

Colopl recently announced that they’re bringing Shironeko Project (White Cat Project) to Switch, and producer Hiroki Asai shared some insight on it in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Hachima.]

Here are highlights from the interview:

  • Asai-san hopes to make fans happy by further expanding on the world of Shironeko project.

  • The reason they went with Switch is because it’s a home console that you can also freely pick up and play on the go. Again, he felt a great potential for Shironeko with the possibility of gathering with friends to play the game.

  • The genre won’t be changing and will remain a cooperative-type of RPG. It’ll put the Switch’s specs and controllers to full use, and do things that weren’t possible on the smartphone version.

  • The characters are and story are expected to be different from the smartphone version.

  • That doesn’t mean existing characters won’t make an appearance, but it also means that they won’t simply take contents from the smartphone version and throw it into the new game.

Shironeko New Project for Nintendo Switch is expected to release in 2020. More information will be shared later. You can get a glimpse of the game with a teaser trailer in our previous report.

shironeko new project

White Cat Project developer Colopl recently announced that a new project is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020, which certainly raised some eyebrows considering that Nintendo is currently in the midst of a lawsuit against the company over five patent infringements. However, a new statement from Nintendo clarifies that the two matters are unrelated. [Thanks, Nikkei!]

According to Nintendo, “Their game software sales and the lawsuit are completely separate matters.”

The Nintendo vs Colopl started early this year, and is still ongoing. The case has gone on to a third round of trials, and is unlikely to see resolution soon.

Shironeko New Project for Nintendo Switch is expected to release in 2020. More information will be shared later.

Nintendo sued Colopl of White Cat Project fame in early January, and the case continues to go on even today. New information has recently surfaced regarding what sort of patents were infringed in the case. [Thanks, Takashi Mochizuki from The Wall Street Journal]

You can read about the first infringement, the ‘puchicon’, in our previous report.

colopl2 (2) colopl3 (2)

Firstly, in patent 4262217 the patent specification in question has to do with characters automatically attacking a nearby enemy as soon as the pointing device (in the DS’ case, the pen, while for smartphones, a finger) leaves with the screen. This is a UI patent in order to simplify attack controls and prevent unwanted actions from occurring (such as attacks when trying to run away).

The patent was filed back in 2006.

colopl5 colopl4

For patent 4010533, the function invented and patented is the use of a confirmation screen before exiting Sleep Mode. This was to ensure that Sleep mode couldn’t be removed without player input, to reduce accidents.

The patent was filed in 2001, six years before smartphones became a thing. Other patent example photos clearly show the Gamecube and GBA.

colopl6 colopl7

Patent 5595991 has to do with multiplayer connectivity. It’s a patent on a program restriction that allows connectable games to detect and only play with other ed s, whether through local or internet connection.

The patent was filed in 2005.

colopl1

The final patent (no. 3637031) has to do with showing player orientation when something blocks the view of the camera from the character. When there is something blocking the camera from the player character (such as around the corner in the picture), the character is shown as a shadow, complete with their orientation.

shadow

For clearer illustration, here’s the shadowing effect in action in White Cat Project, where it appears on whatever is being blocked by the trees.

The patent was filed in 2002.
