Interview: Going Over Voice of Cards Games' Development and Future

It’s quite rare to see multiple installments in a series appear practically one after another. But that’s exactly what happened with the Voice of Cards games. In the span of four months, two installments appeared. To help better understand how Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden, the second entry, came to be and what changed from the first game, Siliconera spoke with Executive Producer Yosuke Saito and Director Maasa Mimura about the game.

Jenni Lada: Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden is arriving four months after The Isle Dragon Roars. Were the two games in development at the same time? How difficult was it preparing the two in close succession?

Yosuke Saito: I was always conscious of wanting to turn it into a series. Though I kept that a secret. However, many of our staff were swamped with an inundation of tasks, so deciding on the order of prioritization for development was difficult.

Despite that, everyone at Alim and all our younger staff worked hard to complete everything, which made me think, “Youth is power!” There wasn’t much of a need for this old man to jump in.

Interview: Going Over Voice of Cards Games' Development and Future

Given the brief gap between the two games, how did affect Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden’s development? Was there anything in particular you changed after hearing from players?

Saito: In the previous game, we received about the game’s progression, so for this title, we made it so that High Speed mode can be used from the start.

What were you able to do or accomplish with Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden that wasn’t possible with The Isle Dragon Roars? Were there any elements that shifted from one to the other during development?

Maasa Mimura: Given the constraints with regard to the development period, it was thanks to The Isle Dragon Roars existing already as a base that we were able to adjust details and expand upon how we portrayed elements in Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden.

Specifically, we were able to present adjustments to the world within the heart, as well as unique expressions for the Maiden and Maiden’s attendant. There are some details that we adjusted, but in of how the game is set up, the idea was to expand upon elements, so in that regard, I don’t think anything has shifted.

Interview: Going Over Voice of Cards Games' Development and Future

Now that you have the Voice of Cards framework in place, how long does it take to create new entries? How many Voice of Cards games would you like to make?

Saito: We’ll think about the future of the Voice of Cards series if The Isle Dragon Roars and The Forsaken Maiden sell well.

We get why all the NieR crossover material is showing up in the games, but when is Square Enix going to let you start slipping more Drakengard characters into things?

Saito: Our plans for the future are… a secret.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars and The Forsaken Maiden are both available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC.

NieR Yoko Taro Keiichi Okabe

NieR series creator Yoko Taro will appear on THE TRAD, a Square Enix music radio program, alongside series composer Keiichi Okabe. The program will discuss their various bodies of work, including Voice of Cards and the NieR series. Both Yoko Taro and Okabe will appear on THE TRAD radio program through TOKYO FM on February 24, 2022. Yoko Taro and Okabe have tweeted about their appearances on their individual Twitter s.

Previously, Final Fantasy XIV composer Masayoshi Soken appeared on the program. During the program, Soken explained his creative process while creating the music and sound effects for Final Fantasy XIV. The program doesn't have an outline available, though. The announcement simply revealed that Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe will discuss the NieR series alongside Voice of Cards.

Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden is the latest game in the Voice of Cards series. It's a standalone game with an all new cast and a story that focuses on various shrine maidens and their individual servants. It also has several quality of life features, like a high speed function. While Voice of Cards does carry over some staff from the Drakengard series, it is completely unconnected from that series of games.

voice of cards review

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, the new game from NieR creator Yoko Taro, is a peculiar little game. It knows what it wants to be! And its aesthetics definitely come first. But if you're at home in its slower pace and tavern feel, you'll have a good time.

In Voice of Cards, you control an adventuring party, moving around the world, talking to NPCs and fighting monsters. Sound familiar? It should! Its safe, traditional storytelling approach is definitely intentional. It wants to feel comfortable and old, like a well-worn poker deck.

Everything is represented by cards, including environments and items. The game distinguishes the overworld from smaller locations by using different layouts. When you zoom out, half of the card columns shift downward, creating a pseudo-hex grid. You move along by controlling a metal marker, revealing surrounding areas (by flipping the cards) as you go.

The combat portions of the game play out similarly to standard JRPGs. It’s turn-based, with party sporting various physical and elemental abilities. But hey, these are cards! So that has an effect on gameplay. First: low numbers. Since your stats are right on your card, every point of attack matters. Same with defense and hit points! Many modern games love accelerating digits until it all feels meaningless. Here? You can feel the one-attack bump of a new accessory in a very real way. Still, there’s some randomness. With dice rolls on some attacks, critical hits and a slight damage variation for your attack, it’s not totally predictable.

If you’re looking for a challenge, you might not find it here. It takes a while to get to challenging foes! And if you, like us, find yourself compelled to reveal every spot on the map? (Which the game really feels designed to entice you to do?) You’ll do more than enough grinding. Each party member has a growing assortment of cards from which to choose to build a loadout, but you’re only sporadically tested enough to make that matter.

voice of cards review

The action of Voice of Cards proceeds at a contemplative pace. It’s a game designed for you to nestle in and calmly follow. And it’s absolutely about its narrator, voiced in the English track by Todd Haberkorn. It’s probably handy from a recording standpoint that everything’s voiced by the same person, but it’s also an important part of the game’s feel. It’s a clear homage to Dungeons & Dragons red box-style tabletop storytelling! So the casual, audiobook-like tone works toward that feel. This isn’t an adrenaline-fueled action game! It better fits with a cup of hot cocoa on a lazy weekend.

The game’s definitely plodding at times, but it tries its best not to overstay its welcome. Our playthrough clocked in at under 13 hours while still getting sidetracked a few times, and a speedy first play could probably manage credits in less than ten. And yet it feels like it left so many of its ideas unexplored to the fullest! Perhaps that’s why the game puts The Isle Dragon Roars at the forefront, though. Voice of Cards as a series of ten-hour adventure games might be interesting! And development could be sustainable with all the reusable work creating the format. Still, if that’s the case, we’d like to have seen more in this first entry.

voice of cards review

This pace fits well with the game’s whimsy. The narrator is a character too, reading words he didn’t always write himself. He’s happy to call your protagonist a headstrong idiot, and he’s right. He grows tired of dawdling. He cheers you on, and challenges you, in battle as he controls monsters. More than any of the in-world adventurers, he’s a well-realized personality.

So yeah, in Voice of Cards, voice is unsurprisingly important. But hey, so are cards! We talked about the gameplay, but the idea of physical card games also drives the aesthetic. The game takes place on wooden tables and trays. Cards are stamped with gold foil and dice and gem tokens drop into view as you use abilities. For a game that isn’t pushing technical specs, it’s a nice look. (Though, if you play the Switch version, you might find some performance issues that would have you disputing that technical specs point.)

While Voice of Cards seems to love tabletop games, where it falters a bit is in its choice. You’re often presented with options meant to let you shape the story, but very few are meaningful. The joy of tabletop play is in customization and weaving a collaborative tale. Voice of Cards, on the other hand, is very much following its own script. But hey, you can ad lib here and there.

voice of cards review

Somehow, there’s also a card game inside the card game, too. Visiting the Game Parlor lets you play against other local players or computer opponents with a poker-style deck. It’s about building sets of the same card for both points and special abilities or consecutive numbers for pure points. There’s some definite randomness here that undermines the bragging rights of the victor, but it can still be decent fun. We wish there were more reason to play, but once you win with each rule set, that’s kind of it. You just... play again? The final, “Include All” rule set includes an ability for Joker cards that really does make the outcome feel like luck, so we’d recommend mostly sticking to “Add Events,” the third rule option.

We wish Voice of Cards took the time to explore its gameplay ideas a bit more. We also wish there were a few menu options to accelerate battle pace when you know what you're doing. But as-is? There's a lot here to love, if you have the right temperament for it.

You move along by controlling a metal marker, revealing surrounding areas (by flipping the cards) as you go. the isle dragon roars screenshot The combat portions of the game play out similarly to standard JRPGs. Each party member has a growing assortment of cards from which to choose to build a loadout, but you’re only sporadically tested enough to make that matter. voice of cards review The action of Voice of Cards proceeds at a contemplative pace. Still, if that’s the case, we’d like to have seen more in this first entry. voice of cards review This pace fits well with the game’s whimsy. (Though, if you play the Switch version, you might find some performance issues that would have you disputing that technical specs point.) While Voice of Cards seems to love tabletop games, where it falters a bit is in its choice. You’re often presented with options meant to let you shape the story, but very few are meaningful. The joy of tabletop play is in customization and weaving a collaborative tale. Voice of Cards, on the other hand, is very much following its own script. But hey, you can ad lib here and there. voice of cards review Somehow, there’s also a card game inside the card game, too. But as-is? There's a lot here to love, if you have the right temperament for it. yoko taro game Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars will release October 28, 2021 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Voice of Cards Nier

In an interview with Dengeki, Yoko Taro reaffirms that Voice of Cards: The Isle of Dragon Roars has no connection to Drakengard or the NieR series. While white and black dragons appear in the trailers for Voice of Cards, Yoko Taro states that there is simply no connection between this new title and his previous works. Taro originally shared this through a previous Twitter post. At that time, he stated that Voice of Cards was "not a Drakengard game." [Thanks, Dengeki!]

However, when asked about a potential connection to NieR: Reincarnation, as the narration in Voice of Cards is somewhat similar to the mobile title, Yoko Taro hinted that the only thing remotely the same about them was their cost.

Additionally, Executive Producer Yosuke Saito shared some insight into the development of Voice of Cards. He spoke in detail about the development period of the game, saying:

It took longer than expected because it was developed between NieR Reincarnation and NieR Replicant, but I'm very happy that we can finally show this to everyone.

He also revealed that the development for Voice of Cards took 1.5 times longer than initially planned due to the number of titles in development at the same time.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars will release on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 on October 28, 2021. A demo is immediately available.

Voice of Cards Mobile Game

Voice of Cards creative director Yoko Taro said the game was initially pitched as a mobile social game. He revealed this during Square Enix's Voice of Cards at Tokyo Game Show 2021. However, executive producer Yosuke Saito later convinced Yoko to release the game as a consumer title. Saito cited the time commitments required for developing social games.

Yoko Taro pitched the game as a mobile title due to the higher hurdles involved in pitching and developing consumer games. Instead, he had intended to work on Voice of Cards as a "smaller, compact mobile game." He pitched the title with character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka.

Upon receiving the pitch, Yosuke Saito asked to change the game to a multiplatform consumer title, as modern social games "would not be compact." Furthermore, Saito worried that Yoko would be unable to manage his work due to the number of social games he was already managing. One of these, NieR Re[in]carnation, recently launched globally. Narrator Hiroki Yasumoto added that releasing Voice of Cards as a one-time purchase also benefits the team. This approach made the game comparatively more niche and refined, Yasumoto said.

Additionally, Square Enix showcased some gameplay footage of Voice of Cards. It also showed physical editions of the game. This includes the bonus metal cards currently available for pre-order at the Square Enix eStore.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars will release on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 on October 28, 2021. A demo is out now.
