It's Wednesday, which means Siliconera is live streaming yet again. This time, we're playing a spin-off of a popular strategic series. It is Valkyria Revolution, a Musou-style game set in an alternate reality of the Valkyria Chronicles world we're familiar with. You can watch us go through some missions and sample some of the story at 12pm PT/2pm CT/3pm ET.

We’re right at the beginning of Valkyria Revolution, so you can see some of the story and action without worrying about any spoilers. Amleth, Jutland’s anti-Valkyria unit commander, and Ophelia, the country’s princess who decided to the army and serve alongside her citizens, are kicking off a war to fight against the Ruzhein empire and fight for Jutland’s independence.

Valkyria Revolution is available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in North America. It will come to Europe on June 30, 2017.

People looking for something that bears part of the Valkyria Chronicles name, albeit with different gameplay, an alternate timeline, and unfamiliar characters and countries, can pick up Valkyria Revolution on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One today. To celebrate, Sega has released a trailer showing how a war for liberation gets kicked off in the game.

Jutland is beginning its fight for freedom against the Ruzi Empire and its Valkyria, Brunhilde. Fortunately, Amleth Grønkjær is the leader of the smaller country’s anti-Valkyria squad and has the mana weaponry and ragnite spells that might stop her. However, there may be another reason for this war.

Valkyria Revolution is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One in North America. It will come to Europe on June 30, 2017.

While Valkyria Revolution may have gameplay that is quite different from Valkyria Chronicles, Sega brought in a familiar composer for its music. Yasunori Mitsuda, known for his work on Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Soma Bringer, and Inazuna Eleven, worked on the soundtrack with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. In a new video, Mitsuda talks about the game’s music, specifically going over what it was like to compose “Azure Revolution,” its main theme song.

“Azure Revolution” features vocals by Sarah Alainn. You may recognize her from her work on “Beyond the Sky,” (Xenoblade Chronicles’s ending theme. “Beyond the Sky” is another Mitsuda composition.)

Valkyria Revolution will come to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in North America on June 27, 2017. It will come to Europe on June 30, 2017.

Naruto-Shippuden-Ultimate-Ninja-Storm-4-Bild-10-705x397

Last week in Japan, it was a bit of a quiet week without many new releases other than Naruto Shippuden 4: Ultimate Ninja Storm Road to Boruto, which is actually an expansion DLC but released as a retail bundle with the full game and DLC. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker, Media Create, with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of January 30 through February 5, 2017.

The first new title of the week is Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Road to Boruto, which debuted at #6 with 9,204 units sold on PS4. That might look like a pretty low figure for any Naruto game, but let’s not forget that it’s an expansion that released in a pack with the full game, and those with the original game have the option to purchase Road to Boruto as a separate and cheaper DLC, so we won’t be doing any comparisons here.

The only other title that released in Japan during this past week was BoxBoy! Stuffed Box, which debuted at #8 with 7,582 units sold. Resident Evil 7 still leads the charts with 52,665 copies sold for a total of 239,971 thus far, but it’s still a considerable drop on average compared to previous main-numbered titles from the series. In other news, Pokémon Sun & Moon continue performing well with 19,831 copies sold to take #2, and water is still wet. As far as hardware sales go, it we didn’t see anything out of the ordinary as well

Last week in Japan, things got a little spookier with the anticipated release of Resident Evil 7: biohazard. Also released was a new Uta no Prince-sama, Twin Star Exorcists on PS Vita, and New Game!’s new game. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker, Media Create, with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of January 23 through January 29, 2017.

Top of the chart is none other than Resident Evil 7: biohazard which sold 187,306 copies on PS4 for its debut. Here’s how it stacks compared to the previous two main-numbered entries from the series:

  • (2009) Resident Evil 5 – 398,747 (PS3 – 319,590/Xbox 360 – 79,157)
  • (2012) Resident Evil 6 – 676,485 (PS3 – 634,933/Xbox 360 – 41,652)
  • (2017) Resident Evil 7 – 187,306 (PS4)

While 187,306 isn’t a bad number at all in comparison to video game sales today in Japan, it doesn’t take an expert to see that it’s a significant drop as far as the series sales go. With the game being well-received in Japan, perhaps we can chalk this one up to video game software just not selling the way they used to in Japan.

As far as other new titles go, Uta no Prince-sama: Repeat Love placed #2 with 29,008 copies sold on PS Vita, Twin Star Exorcists hitting #15 with 4,681 copies sold on its PS Vita debut, and New Game! The Challenge Stage! barely making the chart at #20 with 3,662 copies sold on PS Vita for its debut.

As far as hardware sales go, Japan saw a little boost in PlayStation 4 sales for both standard and Pro models. This is likely from Resident Evil 7’s release, which may also be the reason the Xbox One saw an increase by 196 units (unless there’s a better explanation for that one that I haven’t heard).

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Last week in Japan, a couple anticipated titles in Gravity Rush 2 and Valkyria Revolution released, as well as Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World on 3DS, and PSV visual novel, Hana Oboro: Sengoku-den Ranki. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker, Media Create, with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of January 9 through January 15, 2017.TK

At #1 is Gravity Rush 2 with 74,361 copies sold in its debut for PS4, making it the highest-selling Gravity Rush title in its first week with the original Gravity Rush selling 43,462 copies in its debut on PS Vita and Gravity Rush Remastered selling 25,004 copies on PS4.

Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World debuted at #2 with 39,555 copies sold on 3DS, a modest start but also topped the debut of the original Yoshi’s Woolly World on Wii U, which sold 31,158 units in its 2015 debut.

Next, we have Valkyria Revolution at #3 on PS4 with 38,197 copies sold and at #7 on PS Vita with 18,219 units for a total of 56,416 copies sold between the two versions. These are overall better numbers than the previous title from February of last year in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered that sold 24,156 copies on PS4 for its debut, but it’s still a major drop as far as it being a main title from the series. Valkyria Chronicles 3 sold 102,779 copies on the PSP alone back in 2011.

And finally, we have Idea Factory’s latest from their otome label, Otomate, with Hana Oboro: Sengoku-den Ranki, which opened at #17 with 4,522 copies sold on PS Vita. Hardware sales are continuing to drop in numbers, but without any “console sellers” in the horizon and a new platform with the Nintendo Switch around the corner, we probably won’t see any major increases in hardware sales for a little while.

Sega recently hosted a live stream featuring gravure model Saki Yoshida, who plays the latest demo and new footage for Valkyria Revolution for a year-end special. Here’s a look at the strategy RPG’s latest.

The video below has its embed disabled, so you might need to check it out via YouTube, or by simply clicking the video below:

The footage begins at the 39:14 mark of the video, and it starts out with the demo that recently released in Japan. The first mission is actually a bit of an introduction to the game’s basics, with info on positioning with cover and using the battle palette.

At 1:05:26, the live stream shows us a little more of the game with its latest commercial, but we get to see some actual new gameplay footage at the 1:08:48 mark of the video, where it starts us out in Elsinore, capital city of Jutland, and also the base of operations where you’ll do everything from purchasing materials and equipment to customizing and prepping for the next mission.

We get to see some battle action at the 1:17:25 mark of the video, which includes a team of the protagonist Amleth Glencaire, the princess of Jutland in Ophelia A. Jutland, the best swordsman in the world in Godot Vilfort, and the capabale engineer in Sara Banner.

Now that Valkyria Revolution’s Prologue Demo is available to try out in Japan for PS4 and PS Vita, Sega released a couple new trailers to give us a look at some of the fundamentals of the game.

The first video is all about the game’s “LeGION” battle system and its battle flow. By opening up your “Battle Palette” menu, you can stop time to strategize when needed, but don’t forget to factor in placement. IT then shows us actions from the different types of units you’ll get to use in battle. While some focus on damage down enemies, other types are more about or tanking.

The next video is all about the home base of Elsinore, which basically acts as your base of operations for the adventure. Here you can do everything from purchase materials to equipment. It’s where you’ll prepare for your next mission. You can also do things such as character customization and interaction.
