Kotobukiya announced the pre-order phase for the Eltolinde Unicorn Overlord figure is open, and the company also shared a new prototype of her twin sister Rosalinde. The Turenos of Elheim will cost $184.99 and ship in December 2025. It noted Rosalinde orders will follow “soon” on social media.

Both of these are 1/7 figures that stand at over 10 inches tall (around 275mm), and the Eltolinde one’s been teased since September 2024. Rosalinde showed up again back in January 2025. Both wear their standard costumes from the game. Each one also carries a staff, with theirs matching each other. Kotobukiya noted that buying direct from the company means someone gets an extra smiling face plate for Eltolinde. However, it didn’t note if a similar promotion will appear for Rosalinde.

As a reminder, Kotobukiya currently continues to ship to the US as usual, even with tariffs by President Donald Trump in effect. However, it is good to keep those fees in mind, as the company did state it will announce its policies in the future. Other figure companies, like Good Smile Company, already took action and ended pre-orders.

The Eltolinde Unicorn Overlord figure pre-order is open, it will debut in December 2025, and the Rosalinde one will follow. The game is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

Western RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Fallout, and Dragon Age are all well known for having dating and romance options, but they are less common in JRPGs. While many JRPGs have romantic storylines, it’s less common that they have dating sim elements where you can choose from a variety of different partners. If you’re looking for a JRPG to play with dating sim or romance options, here are 10 of our favorites.

Fire Emblem: Awakening 2x1r25

When people think of JRPGs with romance options, many think of the Fire Emblem series, which has long allowed people to marry certain units and strengthen them. Fire Emblem: Awakening gets exceptionally deep into the romance options, and you almost need a spreadsheet in order to organize everyone optimally. Not only will you be planning out your marriage – and the spawn that ultimately comes from that relationship – but the marriage and children of your other units. Certain marriages will produce offspring with different traits that can give an advantage in battle, making romance strategic.

Almost since the beginning the Persona series has had romance and dating options – more on that later – but they became far more overt with the modern series. In these games you can romance as many people as you like, but just be aware that if you invite them out for a date at the same time, they tend to not vibe with it. We’ve chosen Persona 3 Portable to represent the series, as it has a male and female MC with different dating opportunities. One of the cheesy things I love about this is that if you date one of the characters that dies mid-game, there is a post game dialogue that lets you know they are just in a coma. There aren’t many JRPGs where smooching will save lives.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3o503h

Most of the games in the long-running The Legend of Heroes series have some dating or romance aspects, but the Trails of Cold Steel subseries takes it to a new level. There are four games in Trails of Cold Steel and while romances start fresh in every game, there are bonuses for characters that you romanced in other titles. In the first entry, if you choose someone to take to the dance near the end of the story, they’ll receive an EXP boost in the second game. It doesn’t just offer you additional cutscenes, but a few sweet rewards for your affections.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age 551z6n

Dragon Quest hasn’t always had romantic or dating options, but Dragon Quest XI added the option to date certain characters in the post game. It’s still completely optional, but it adds an extra layer to the after credits quests for those who are deeply invested in the game. After you’ve finished the main story you’ll be asked to rebuild Cobblestone and once done, you can choose another character to live with forever. While you can only technically marry Gemma, you can choose to cohabit with a number of other characters giving you some options. 

Yakuza: Like A Dragon q6b1h

Most of the Yakuza games don’t have dating sim or romance options outside of hostesses and that always felt more friendly than romantic. Yakuza: Like A Dragon switched this up with its personality stats that dictate which of six women our protagonist Ichiban can date. While it’s completely optional, dating certain NPCs and party has huge benefits, and there is even a side story related to dating all six women at once. For a man who fails so completely in love in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth he’s quite the lothario in his debut game.

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders 261235

Many of these games have dating or romance elements as an aside to the story, but Summon Night as a series is known for being part JRPG, part visual novel, and part dating sim. This is the series you will want to jump into if you want the dating to be at the core of your gameplay. At the end of every chapter someone will you up on the rooftop, and you can decide how much you vibe with them. While Summon Night 6 has some localization issues, you should try out the series if you want the quintessential JRPG meets dating sim experience.

Just like in the original Final Fantasy VII there are some hidden dating and romance options in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Things you do and say with different party throughout the game will determine how they feel about you, and this culminates in a date that you have at the Gold Saucer. In the original FF7 you could date Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, or Barrett, with Aerith being the standard option – sorry Tifa fans – but Final Fantasy VII Rebirth adds two new options. Cloud can also date Red XIII in Rebirth, or if you haven’t shared enough romantic moments with any of these characters you’ll share a romantic date with the boys: Cid, Vincent, and Cait Sith. Yes, at the same time.

Unicorn Overlord is one of the best games of 2024, and it also is the JRPG with the most dating and romance options. It’s all about recruiting characters and organizing them into armies to fight for the cause, and almost everyone you recruit can be romanced and married. In fact out of 70 recruitable characters you can smooch more than 60 of them. You need to build your bonds with everyone, by giving gifts, eating with them or having discussions, and maxing out your rapport means you can hand over the Ring of the Maiden and marry them. Aside from showing your love to that character they gain +5 in every stat, so there are definite benefits to falling in love.

Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ i6c31

Technically Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ isn’t a dating sim in the sense that you don’t pledge yourself to one person, but you do choose which characters to spend your time with, and there isn’t enough time to get to know everyone. Finishing your bond with a certain character will give you a special final scene and item near the end of the game, giving you more incentive to spend as much time as possible with your favorites. There is a canon choice here that gives you more insight into the ending, but if you have a favorite teammate, you’ll want to make sure you spend your time with them as well.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin 2z5g47

The modern Persona series – Persona 3 onwards – put romance and dating at the forefront as an integral part of the gameplay. However, romance options began with Persona 2: Innocent Sin where our protagonist Tatsuya can choose to date Maya, Lisa, or Jun. Yes, Persona 2 had a same sex dating option, which the modern series will not give us for some reason. Your choice of romantic partner doesn’t have any major outcomes on the story, and if you play Persona 2: Eternal Punishment you’ll know that Maya is Tatsuya’s canon romantic partner, but it is still a beautiful touch to this early story.

Kotobukiya has formally revealed its figure of Scarlett from Atlus and Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord. The company has also opened pre-orders for the figure, which it will release in October 2025, with a tax-inclusive MSRP of 23,100 yen (~$153.30).

The figure will have a scale of 1/7 and an overall height of around 242 mm (~9.53 inches). Kotobukiya will base the Scarlett figure's pose on her official regular in-game art. It will also include the bronze staff that the priestess wields in the art.

Kotobukiya will also offer an alternate head part showing Scarlet with an open smiling mouth as an exclusive bonus for orders made on the Kotobukiya Online Shop. However, it can only legally ship domestically inside Japan.

People living outside the country can alternatively place orders for the same figure on AmiAmi with a discounted price of 21,940 yen (~$146.85), but the latter does not seem to include the exclusive part.

Scarlett will not be the only Unicorn Overlord character to have a figure made by Kotobukiya. In early February 2025, the company revealed gradual progress for figures based on Melisandre, Eltolinde, Rosalinde, and Yahna. Kotobukiya is not even the only company to produce Unicorn Overlord character figures, as Apex-Toys is also separately working on a figure of Berengaria.

Kotobukiya will release the 1/7 scale figure of Scarlett from Unicorn Overlord in October 2025. The character's appearance will be based on the strategy RPG that has been available worldwide on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

Atlus has published a new video showing the rehearsal for the Unicorn Overlord Orchestra Concert on its official Japanese social media . People can get a sneak peek of the orchestra performance, regardless of whether they have purchased tickets for the concert or not.

This video runs for roughly 21 seconds. It shows how of the Tokyo Chamber Orchestra are preparing their performances of tracks from Atlus and Vanillaware's strategy RPG that has been available worldwide for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

In the same tweet, Atlus added that tickets for the night show, which starts at 7 PM JST, are still available for purchase. As of February 27, 2025, tickets for the earlier day show at 3 PM JST have already sold out.

In October 2024, Atlus also announced that it would make the concert tickets available to non-Japanese foreigners as well. However, it turned out that only tickets for physical attendance at the Japanese venue are available. The company has already closed the ticketing window for foreigners on February 16, 2025.

The Unicorn Overlord Orchestra Concert will take place physically at the Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

As part of Wonder Festival 2025 Winter, Apex-Toys shared a new Unicorn Overlord figure of Berengaria. She’s the former Tricorn Mercenaries leader who eventually s our army in the game. Since the item is still fairly early in development, we don’t know when it will be released or how much it will cost.

Only one photo of the Berengaria prototype figure appeared at WonHobby 39. She’s in the unpainted prototype phase, so we only had a general idea of how she will look. However, her armor and full-body suit are entirely black and crimson, and we included a screenshot from the game to highlight how her official art looks. The initial image suggests she’ll also be equipped with the same Iron Axe and Iron Greatshield she holds when you recruit her in-game.

As a reminder, you can not only recruit Berengaria in the game. She is also one of the characters it is possible to marry. 

There are quite a few Unicorn Overlord figures that are already available or on the way. Kotobukiya already established that it is working on ones of Yahna, Rosalinde, Eltolinde, and Scarlett. Those are at various stages of development. It also confirmed in 2025 that a Melisandre figure is in the works too. While all of these items will appear in Japan first, we'll also eventually see them at retailers that ship worldwide or stores in North America.

There’s no word yet on when Apex-Toys will release its Berengaria Unicorn Overlord figure. Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Kotobukiya is working on Melisandre, Yahna, Rosalinde, Eltolinde, and Scarlett figures as well.

Kotobukiya issued a series of updates on its Unicorn Overlord figures at its Kotobukiya Collection 2025 event, and it included an announcement of a Melisandre one. Others that appeared in various states of development were Yahna, Rosalinde, Eltolinde, and Scarlett. No release dates were shared for any of them.

Melisandre is the Unicorn Overlord figure that is earliest in development. As such, there wasn’t even merchandise to show yet. Instead, Kotobukiya shared concept art for how she’ll look when it is released.

The state of the other figures varies. Two appear to practically be ready for pre-orders to open, while we probably will see the other two show up at another event. The Yahna and Rosalinde ones were both revealed at the end of 2024. While they initially only showed up as concept art like Melisandre, now both are at the unpainted prototypes stage. Both Scarlett and Eltolinde were revealed earlier in 2024, and as such are both already showing up as painted figures.

Here’s how all of those look so far:

Since the Eltolinde and Scarlett ones are so far along, we'll likely see an update on them in the next few weeks. Depending on production updates, it is possible both of them will appear before 2025 ends. Given the state of the Melisandre one, we might not end up seeing a prototype of some kind until the end of the year.

Kadokawa has revealed a new lineup of Unicorn Overlord-themed merchandise available for pre-orders exclusively on its ebten web store. A peculiar item is included in the list, which is a Zippo lighter designed after kingdom emblems from Atlus and Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord game. This lighter will be available in late April 2025 at 12,980 yen (~$83.45).

The lighter will be made of hard stainless steel and brass manufactured directly from Zippo's headquarters in the US. However, the uniquely branded lighter will have a distinction with engravements of the Cornia Kingdom's emblems.

One of the wide sides will have the original Cornia Kingdom emblem, while the other will instead feature the New Cornia Kingdom version. Atlus and Sega's copyright marks will complete the lighter's decoration on the side.

The Zippo lighter is not the only new Unicorn Overlord merchandise Kadokawa has announced. The company also revealed a B2-sized hanging tapestry poster at 3,850 yen (~$24.75) and an acrylic at 2,750 yen (~$17.70) with four different designs. Just like the lighter, these items are also available exclusively on ebten, but Kadokawa will ship them earlier in mid-March 2025.

The Unicorn Overlord-themed Zippo lighter will be available in late April 2025. The original video game is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Atlus noted that it had sold over 1 million units of the game as of September 2024.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 1r1949

This remake of the GameCube classic showed a new generation of players just how good the Paper Mario series was — and could be again — when allowed to sport fun characterization and mechanical depth. It’s one of the best role-playing games of all time, lovingly restored to play just as we it. It certainly earned our 10/10 score.

A spiritual successor to Ogre Battle, Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord has a nuanced world, engaging combat and that signature Vanillaware art we know and (usually) love. The developer generally hasn’t done sequels, but we’d really love to see what it could do if it built atop this work! Still, even if that doesn’t happen, it’s nice to see a game like this again.

Winner: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom 2gw6n

A Zelda game starring Zelda herself — that is, one acknowledged by Nintendo — has been a long time coming for fans who have been clamoring for it for ages. It surely is its own thing, as Grezzo’s follow-up to the Link’s Awakening remake and not a sprawling 3D adventure, but it’s a great little toy box with tons of puzzles to solve and lots of pieces to try to solve them. Congratulations, Echoes of Wisdom!

Atlus is working with Animate and Frontier Works to release more acrylic stands featuring characters from Unicorn Overlord. The new standees will appear in mid-2025. Pre-orders for the stands are immediately available on Animate's online storefront.

The newly revealed acrylic stands will be different from the first batch of 107 character stands revealed earlier in 2024. The new batch will mostly feature the existing title characters in two different poses, with more variations based on the lower and upper-class attires.

There will be 272 new stands in this batch. The prices for individual stands will range between 1,760~2,750 yen (~$11.70~18.30). However, if one wants to purchase all of those 272 stands, they will have to spend a grand total of 572,440 yen (~$3,810).

The companies will also restock the acrylic character and background stands from the first batch. When combined with the new second batch, there will be a total of 379 unique character stands with 15 backgrounds available.

These items will be based on Atlus and Vanillaware's strategy RPG that has been available worldwide on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Atlus announced that it has sold over 1 million units of the game as of September 2024.

Animate will close the pre-order window for the new batch of Unicorn Overlord character and background acrylic stands on January 15, 2025. The company will start delivering the goods in mid-June 2025.

The Japanese Unicorn Overlord Orchestra Concert will be accessible to non-Japanese foreigners living outside the country. Atlus has announced on its official Japanese X that it is working to make ticket applications for the concert available more widely.

Atlus originally announced the concert in early October 2024 to celebrate Unicorn Overlord suring one million units sold worldwide. The Tokyo Chamber Orchestra will perform tracks from the game with Naotaka Tachibana as the conductor. Vanillaware's Takafumi Noma and Basiscape Mitsuhiro Kaneda, Toki Takeda, Richter, and Denys Fontanarosa will also appear as guests for the talk show.

As of this announcement, only tickets for physical attendance are available via lottery on the Japanese e+ website. Prices for the tickets will range from 9,900 yen (~$66.20) for regular attendance to 19,800 yen (~$132.40) for receiving bonus character acrylic stands.

While Atlus also announced that people residing outside Japan will also be able to purchase tickets for the concert, it is still unclear whether they will still have to come to Tokyo to physically attend the concert or be able to watch it via online streaming.

Atlus is one of the leading publishers and developers when it comes to Japanese role-playing games. From 2020 forward, Atlus is putting its best foot forward when it comes to releasing JRPGs in the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series and beyond. When it comes to the best recent Atlus JRPGs from 2020 and beyond, these are the games that excel when it comes to visuals, gameplay, and content.

Best Recent Atlus JRPGs: Persona 5 Royal 66596y

Persona 5 Royal is the pinnacle of not just an Atlus game but JRPGs in general. The story of the Phantom Thieves is rife with some of the most stylish and satisfying turn-based gameplay of all time. It also has an excellent cast of characters that rewards the player for taking the time to get to know them. Plus, it has unbelievable value with well over 100 hours of content.

This remake of the original Persona 3 isn’t perfect, but it at least makes the game worthwhile for newer players. The beautiful visuals give previous Atlus games a run for their money, while the story is still simply the best in the franchise. It does have some pacing and repetition issues with the main Tartarus dungeon, but this is one of the best ways to play it.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance 1k313j

The original SMT V is one of my personal least favorite Atlus JRPGs, but this complete version sold me on it. The updated visuals and performance with newer platforms takes the frustration of this open-world-like experience. It is much smoother and it includes a new storyline that is more character-driven and much better than the also included original.

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection 5x5bs

I’m not entirely sure why this game is so darn expensive, but you get the first three Etrian Odyssey adventures in one package. These games are some of the strongest first-person dungeon-crawlers in existence. The level of polish is great, plus the party customization provides so much depth. It is missing some features from some of the 3DS remakes but still worth a pick up.

This bizarrely great Vanillaware title is like an active tactical RPG. The pace and style of the battles in Unicorn Overlord takes some getting used to, but it works well when it clicks. The art style is classic sublime Vanillaware, while the story is actually pretty darn good. If you want something a bit different from the usual turn-based games on this best recent Atlus JRPGs list, this is the one to pick up.

During a special program to commemorate Unicorn Overlord suring a million sales, Atlus revealed the most popular characters in the game. Rosalinde ended up taking first place in the poll. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

Here are the top ten most popular characters in Unicorn Overlord, as voted on by players:

Nigel was also on the list, in between Berengaria and Virginia, but he’s not technically part of the ranking. People picked their favorite characters based on design, personality, and their usefulness in combat. For example, a person talked about how they liked Rosalinde for her powerful skills and how she was able to remain in Alain’s main party the entire time in their playthrough. Another person said that they picked her for her smart yet funny, strong yet straightforward, and motherly yet delicate personality.

Other polls in the program focused on people’s favorite classes, scenes, music tracks, and stages. Atlus also revealed people’s favorites for the Rite of the Covenant. Berengaria was the most popular for those outside of Japan, and Scarlett won on the Japanese poll. During the program, Kazuki Ura and Takayuki Ishii even gave a live performance of Alain performing the Rite with Nigel.

Yet another Unicorn Overlord figure announcement is here, and this time it is for a Yahna figma. Good Smile Company is working on it, with Max Factory and Masaki Apsy deg it. There’s no release window for it yet. This announcement, like the others, comes after the VanillaWare game’s first anniversary.

Unlike some of the other Unicorn Overlord figure reveals, the Yahna figma will be a posable one. This means like all figmas, there will be multiple points of articulation in her neck, arms, body, and legs. She will also come with various accessories at launch. However, since only concept art appeared at the moment, we don’t know what those might be. She is shown wielding her staff, as she does in the game, so that weapon will at the very least be included in her kit alongside additional hand parts for posing.

This is the fourth figure announcement for the game to come up in the last week. The first two were Eltolinde and Scarlett scale figure reveals by Kotobukiya at the end of September 2024. Then during WonFes Shanghai 2024, Good Smile Company revealed a scale figure of Virginia.

Atlus and Vanillaware announced a new Unicorn Overlord special program broadcast to celebrate the game suring over one million in sales, both when it comes to physical and digital units, worldwide. The broadcast will appear on October 4, 2024 on the AtlusTube official YouTube channel, and it will only be in Japanese.

Takayuki Ishii, the Japanese voice actor for Nigel in Unicorn Overlord, will be the host of the program. Meanwhile, the voice actors for Alain and Scarlett in the Japanese dub of Unicorn Overlord, Kazuki Ura and Hina Suguta, will be featured as guests. The broadcast will be a variety talk show. It will also include the announcement of the preliminary results for the survey aimed at s who finished the game, conducted in August 2024. In addition, new Unicorn Overlord merchandise items will be showcased. This could involve looks at the figures.

Kotobukiya announced it will release figures of Scarlett and Eltolinde, two of the main heroines and romance options in Unicorn Overlord. Photos of unpainted prototypes of each one appeared on social media, and the company confirmed both will also be on display for the first time at MegaHobby Expo 2024 in Japan on September 28, 2024.

Both the Unicorn Overlord Scarlett and Eltolinde figures will be scale ones, though Kotobukiya didn’t explain what size each one will be. Each one features a pose that makes them look as though they are walking. Scarlett, who is a human priestess that acts as a healer, is carrying her staff. Her base has a cobblestone path on it. The elven Turenos Eltolinde carries a spear and appears to be running through grass. Each design seems to be based on Vanillaware’s official art.

Here are Kotobukiya’s first two photos of the figures. While the current models are unpainted, their eyes are so you have a better idea how they will look.

Both Scarlett and Eltolinde are major characters in Unicorn Overlord. Scarlett is one of the first allies on your team, though various circumstances mean she temporarily leaves early on. Meanwhile, Eltolinde eventually s your party after going through the Elheim region.

Unicorn Overlord is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X. There’s no release window for the Scarlett or Eltolinde figures yet.
