Visual novels are getting a real treat with the remasters of Ever 17 and Never 7. These beloved games from developer KID and legendary writer Kotaro Uchikoshi are both must-plays, especially in the case of the former. With these now almost here, and possibly so by the time you read this, it is time to look ahead. What visual novel deserves a remaster or remake next?

Well, the Siliconera staff has come together to give our thoughts on the visual novels we would like to see get a remaster or remake next.

Well. We already got Fate/stay Night and Tsukihime. I'm going to go with a deep otome cut. Let's see Idea Factory and Otomate bring back Sweet Fuse! It's too good to be trapped on the PSP! -- Jenni

Give me 12Riven! I have wanted to play this game for so long but never have been able to. It’s time for an official English translation of it. Besides that, 11 feels like a lock in the future. It is one of my favorite visual novels of all time and it is quite spooky, too, at times. There are some surprisingly scary moments at that game and it certainly deserves more attention than it got at the time. While Ever 17 is certainly the more flawlessly written experience, I actually prefer 11 for its atmosphere and characters. The directions this one goes in are incredible and deserve a wider audience’s attention.

Finally, I’d like to give a special shoutout to Time Travelers. This Level-5 cinematic visual novel is remarkable, but it only ever released in Japan on Nintendo 3DS for some odd reason. This feels like an easy win to remaster for modern platforms with an official localization, so hopefully it happens at some point. Thankfully, there is an unofficial English translation for now. -- Cody

Ever 17 and Never 7 release for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC on March 6, 2025.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is nearing the end of its legendary anime run from Ufotable. To celebrate the conclusion of the series, the grand finale will be a three-part movie trilogy. While this sounds epic, there is part of me that wishes the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie trilogy was just a new season of the anime series.

For starters, there is the fact that this franchise has already dabbled in movies in the past, including the highest-grossing Japanese movie of all time in Mugen Train. So, from a financial perspective, I completely get it. But Ufotable still turned around and converted that film into a TV series version. As such, I presume they will eventually do the same with this new trilogy.

Since that is likely to be the case, I would prefer to see the TV version first. In fact, it makes more sense to me to release the TV version first and then a compilation of movies that sum up and perhaps add a bit more at the end in of an epilogue in theaters after that. My main reasoning behind this is I just enjoy this franchise as a series more.

Image via Aniplex

Sure, the epic grand conclusion of this series includes some of the likely best battles in anime history, but if anything needed a movie version, it was the recent Hashira Training Arc. That one dragged on way too long and had little going for it, so shortening it into a lightning fast movie would’ve at least trimmed the fat.

Then there is the fact that a movie trilogy is likely to lose some of the context and detail that a TV series would have. For instance, let’s imagine that it takes 24 episodes for a final season of Demon Slayer Infinity Castle. That would equal to roughly 480 minutes of the series, and that is if they are only 20 minute episodes each. Presumably, one or two of them would go longer.

Alternatively, even if all three movies are two hours long, that is only 360 minutes of content. Sure, I think the end of the manga can work this way. But that is a whole lot of time that a TV series version would be able to adapt better. This would allow for the proper time for some of the fights between the Hashira and the demons that non-manga fans are not ready for.

Not to mention, there is something generally special about waiting each week with the community. Everyone waits impatiently to find out what happens next. And I can already predict some of the great cliffhangers they might leave us on.

Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Movie Trilogy
Image via Aniplex

Sure, this can and will happen with the movie trilogy, but there is a problem here. We have no idea when the movies will release. We only know at this time that the first movie is coming in 2025. There is no guarantee that all three will release in 2025. In fact, I think it is a bit delusional to expect that. At best, we get two films in 2025 and a third in 2026.

At worst, though? We could see a new Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie every year until 2027. That would be an excruciating wait. This is doubly so since we’d presumably get the full final season in 2025. Even if the series did half of the season in 2025 and the other half in early 2026, it would still likely beat out the movie trilogy version.

This is also because movies have a stigma with them. An anime studio needs to go all out with even higher quality animation and details. You basically have to have the “finished product” so to speak in a theater. On the other hand, sometimes TV series have a bit of a roughness to them that can be addressed in a future Blu-Ray or movie release.

Furthermore, Ufotable arguably has the best overall animation quality in the industry. They don’t need to go any bigger or better than they already do. That just unnecessarily puts more strain and stress on the artists who are already overworked and underpaid enough.

Image via Aniplex

Having the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie trilogy be a TV series instead is just the better option. It would allow everything to come out slightly sooner without the quality expectations a movie would require. In addition, a movie trilogy compilation release could still happen after the fact with extra content for fans. Regardless, I still look forward to watching the first movie in theaters in 2025.

The Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie trilogy will release the first film in 2025. You can watch the main series on Crunchyroll right now.

fate/zero teaser

The ufotable X (formerly known as Twitter) has posted a video to celebrate the 13-year anniversary of the Fate/Zero anime adaptation. The show stared airing on October 1, 2011.

The video in question is actually the teaser from that faraway time known as 2011. You can watch it both on YouTube and on X. It starts with a voiceover of Saber asking if Kiritsugu is her master, before a rather long sequence of credits and the 3D animation of the summoning circle being drawn. Then, it shows clips of the main characters, both Servants and Masters. Even Rin, who only made a brief cameo in the show, appeared, likely due to fans already being familiar with her from Fate/stay night.

Here is the teaser for Fate/Zero, which aired thirteen years ago to promote the anime:

https://twitter.com/ufotable/status/1841070191603826792

Fate/Zero is a prequel to the original Fate/stay night visual novel, with Gen Urobuchi as the writer. Urobuchi’s known for his work on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Saya no Uta, and Psycho-. He's also working on platformer Rusty Rabbit. The story takes place during the Fourth Holy Grail War and focuses heavily on both Kiritsugu and Kirei, as well as their Servants Saber and Archer. Iskandar and Waver are also major players, though they're mostly separate from Kiritsugu and Kirei's drama. Many fans and critics enjoyed Fate/Zero for its story and characters, and it's one of the more popular series in the Fate franchise.

Fate/Zero is available to stream on Crunchyroll. At the end of the Tweet, ufotable also reminds viewers that Japanese television is re-running Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, which is available to stream via Crunchyroll.

fate/zero musical

A musical adaptation of Fate/Zero will appear on stages in January and February 2025, with performances set to take place in Tokyo and Osaka. Urobuchi Gen, who wrote the original light novel series, will be the one to supervise the script.

Though there aren’t a lot of details about the Fate/Zero musical at the moment, we do have a key visual. It depicts Saber from the back, showing her at the Battle of Camlann. She’s standing in a field littered with corpses and swords, and you can’t see her expression. Aside from Urobuchi, we also know that Hideyuki Nishimori is the scriptwriter and producer. Nishimori previously worked on the stage play and musical adaptations for Persona 5 and Danganronpa 3. Outside of video game adaptations, he’s worked on many stage shows since he entered the industry in the late 1990’s.

As mentioned earlier, there’s not much else information out. So far, the website only depicts the key visual and staff. At the bottom of the page, there’s a big Coming Soon in front of the incantation for summoning a Servant, as well as Kiritsugu’s Command Seals.

Fate/Zero is a light novel series that ran from 2006 to 2007, and it was written by Gen Urobuchi to serve as a prequel to Fate/stay night. Urobuchi is a writer who’s known for his work on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-, and Saya no Uta. He's also working on platformer Rusty Rabbit. Fate/Zero takes place a decade prior to the events of Fate/stay night, covering the Fourth Holy Grail War. Ufotable released an anime adaptation of it that ran from 2011 to 2012.

Fate/Zero is available on streaming platforms like Crunchyroll, and more information on its musical adaptation will appear later on.

fate/stay night 20th anniversary concert

CDs for the Fate/stay night 20th anniversary concert will appear from March 19, 2024. Those who purchase the first production version will also receive a limited-edition Blu-Ray. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The reason there are two different discs is because one of them is the Unlimited Blade Works concert and the other is the Heaven’s Feel one. Both of them cost 3850 JPY ($26.75) each if you just want the CD. However, if you purchase one of the first production ones and can get the Blu-Ray bonus, then it’ll cost 7700 JPY ($53.50). The Blu-Ray box will have a ufotable-drawn cover, a booklet, and a recording from the concert in question.

Fate/stay night came out in 2004 and was originally an adult game before Realta Nua replaced the sexual scenes with new ones, as well as voice actors from the 2006 Studio Deen anime adaptation. It follows Shirou Emiya, a young and inexperienced mage who becomes a participant in the Holy Grail War, which uses Servants—magical familiars that are heroes from mythology, history, or fiction—as their weapons.

There have been many spin-offs from the original Fate concept, including Fate/Samurai Remnant and Fate/strange fake. Fate/stay night itself is also a highly influential work, with many creators such as David Jiang of Honkai: Star Rail and Gege Akutami of Jujutsu Kaisen citing elements of it as inspiration.

Fate/stay night is readily available on the Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Fate/stay night is readily available on the Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

demon slayer alert

Japanese Demon Slayer fans have taken to X (Twitter) to complain about a political news alert appearing during the newest episode of the anime. According to reports online, there were two alerts that appeared during the episode, with one of them being an earthquake alert and the other being the political one in question.

The alert appeared during a very climatic part of the episode. In a screenshot that Jeffrey J. Hall has shared on X (Twitter), we can see the alert banner on a scene in which Tanjiro is desperately training with a wooden sword. The alert states that opposition-backed candidate Yasutomo Suzuki is sure to win the Shizuoka election.

To be very specific, while Suzuki won the election and became the next governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, the alert’s announcement is not that. It uses the term “tousen kakujitsu,” which means that Suzuki was projected to win at the time of the alert. He had not won yet.

Looking up “Kimetsu alert” on X (Twitter) garners many results, with most of them negative. A lot of fans were angry that a political alert appeared during Demon Slayer and noted that since they were recording the episode for later, the alert appeared in the recording as well. A pointed out that a lot of people complaining are probably really young, but it’s a good thing that the government isn’t able to leverage anime or video games to stir political interest or sway anyone’s beliefs. Some ask why these alerts aren't restricted to news channels or NHK.

Demon Slayer is readily available to watch on services like Crunchyroll.

demon slayer hashira training arc

Crunchyroll will air the Hashira Training Arc of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba from May 12, 2024. There is also a new trailer for the season.

The new trailer for the arc is around a minute and a half long. It does contain spoilers, so please exercise caution if you are not caught up with the anime or have not read the manga in advance. You can watch the trailer here:

https://twitter.com/demonslayerusa/status/1766471545902219478?s=61

The Hashira Training Arc is, as the name implies, a training arc in which Tanjiro and the other demon slayers train with the various Hashira . This will shine a spotlight on Hashira who have not really had much screen time thus far, such as Obanai and Sanemi. The trailer also includes a teaser of the theme song for the Hashira Training Arc. As for the new key visual, it shows all of the Hashira sitting down as if they’re in a meeting with Ubuyashiki.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a popular anime and manga series that began serialization in 2016 and ended in 2020. The anime started airing in 2019, with ufotable animating the adaptation. It follows Tanjiro, a normal young boy who survives a demon attack on his family because he was away. The other survivor is his younger sister Nezuko, who had become a demon as a result. In order to restore her humanity, he becomes a demon slayer. The series is immensely popular, with the Mugen Train movie even beating out Spirited Away as the highest grossing film in Japan back in 2020.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is readily available to watch on streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Netflix. The Hashira Training Arc of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba will begin airing from May 12, 2024.

Alice Kuonji in Witch on the Holy Night anime teaser trailer 2

Type-Moon and ufotable published the second teaser trailer for the movie anime adaptation of Witch on the Holy Night. As previously promised, the studios aired the trailer right after the Fate Project New Year's Eve TV program had concluded in Japan.

When ufotable published the first trailer in December 2021, it only showed a simple scene of Aoko Aozaki and Alice Kuonji gazing through a starry night sky on a field of flowers. The new second trailer features more locations and action scenes. It concludes by showing Aoko unleashing a powerful magic attack.

However, ufotable has still yet to announce a release window for this movie. The large Japanese text at the end of this trailer simply informs that the movie anime's production is still in progress.

The new teaser trailer for the Witch on the Holy Night movie is also available to watch below, via Aniplex's YouTube channel:

The movie anime adaptation of Witch on the Holy Night is still under production with no release window announced yet. The title originated as a visual novel that Type-Moon released for PCs in Japan in 2012. Aniplex released an enhanced version with Japanese voice acting and an English subtitle option worldwide on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in December 2022, as well as PC via Steam in December 2023.

mahoutsukai no yoru witch on the holy night second trailer movie

A new trailer for the Witch on the Holy Night movie will appear on December 31, 2023. It’ll air after the Fate Project New Year’s TV Special 2023. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

This will be the second piece of new information since ufotable and Aniplex first teased the movie back in December 2021. At the time, we only saw a little bit of main characters Alice and Aoko. This year, we might get more scenes, as well as a release window.

Since Aniplex and ufotable announced the movie in 2021, an enhanced version of the visual novel came out for the Nintendo Switch and PS4. A Windows PC version recently came out in December 2023. The story of Witch on the Holy Night follows Aoko Aozaki, a mage living in the town of Misaki with Alice Kuonji. Their life together changes when transfer student Sojuro Shizuki walks in on Aoko’s conflict with a mysterious mage, forcing him to live with the two mages in order to protect the secrecy of magic.

In July 2023, Aniplex announced that it sold over 150,000 copies of the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions. Most of the sales came from December 2022, right after the game initially came out. Witch on the Holy Night serves as the prequel to Tsukihime, which will get an English localization in 2024.

The second trailer for the Witch on the Holy Night movie will air on December 31, 2023.
