Twin Engine has released a special music video for My Deer Friend Nokotan, featuring the full version of “Shikairo Days.” You can watch the video via its official YouTube channel.

The music video starts with the main characters (and some realistic-looking deer) dancing to the viral opening bit of the song. It then shows short clips from the show, with the lyrics appearing over them. Considering the music video uses material from the show, it may not come as a surprise that it has the same-fast paced ridiculousness as the actual episodes.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is a comedic slice-of-life manga and anime series that follows Torako Koshi (Koshitan), a former delinquent who puts on the facade of an honors student. However, transfer student Nokotan turns her life upside down. Not only is she some sort of bizarre deer-girl hybrid creature, but she often gets into chaotic situations. Koshitan has to struggle to not only hold onto her mask as the perfect student, but also keep her sanity from crumbling under the sheer ridiculousness.

The anime (from Wit Studio) will end on September 22, 2024, and there will be twelve episodes total. To promote this, a truck featuring Nokotan went around Japan (namely Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro) for people to look at or take pictures with. The truck’s last day was on September 18, 2024 and its final stop was Shinjuku.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. As for the manga, Seven Seas Entertainment licensed it for an English audience.

A new trailer for the Mononoke: Karakasa movie is out, revealing some new male voice actors voicing characters in the cast. The trailer is a lot livelier than the previous one, which focused more on the women inside Ooku. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

As a reminder, Sakurai was originally the Medicine Seller in Mononoke. However, due to his adultery scandal, Hiroshi Kamiya replaced him. This is due to the plot of the movie focusing on the plight and struggles of women in Ooku. Considering the circumstances in Sakurai’s personal life and the themes of the film, the studio decided to recast him.

The new cast in the Mononoke: Karakasa movie, as well as their previous roles, are:

• Hiramoto: Jun Fukuyama (Joker in Persona 5, Lelouch in Code Geass, Lawrence in Spice and Wolf)
• Mizorogi Hokuto: Kenjiro Tsuda (Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh, Dainsleif in Genshin Impact, Nanami in Jujustu Kaisen)
• Saburoumaru: Yuki Kaji (Eren in Attack on Titan, Meliodas in The Seven Deadly Sins, and Todoroki in My Hero Academia)
• Sakashita: Daisuke Hosomi (Professor Fudo in Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s, O.D. in Gatchaman, and Inoue in Tsuritama)
• Tenshi: Miyu Irino (Cyno in Genshin Impact, Sora/Vanitas in Kingdom Hearts, Jintan in Anohana)

The plot of the Mononoke movie will feature the Medicine Seller investigating Ooku. It seems that the women are conducting a strange ritual every night. As well, a very important ritual, Oomochi-zuki, was delayed and someone disappeared under mysterious circumstances. It will combine spiritual fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction.

Mononoke is available for streaming on services like Crunchyroll and the film Mononoke: Karakasa will air on July 26, 2024.

A new key visual and trailer for the Mononoke movie is out, along with information on the new voice actor for Medicine Seller. Hiroshi Kamiya will take over the role in place of Takahiro Sakurai. The new trailer shows more information on what the movie will be about.

In the trailer, Medicine Seller describes what “mononoke” are, in which a human’s negative feelings fuses with the power of ayakashi. The women of Ooku are calling mononoke to it, and Medicine Seller has come to get rid of them. In the trailer, you can see a lot of the show’s characteristic and colorful style.

While Takahiro Sakurai voiced the protagonist, Medicine Seller, in the original Mononoke show, Twin Engine removed him from the role. This is due to Sakurai’s previous infidelity controversies. As the Mononoke movie takes place in Ooku and focuses on both the suffering and salvation of women, Sakurai’s troubles with them did not fit in with the message that the studio wanted to convey.

As for who Hiroshi Kamiya is, he is a veteran voice actor who debuted in 1992. He has been a main or major character in several anime and video games. He also works as a singer and narrator. Some of Kamiya's more prominent roles include Edogawa Rampo in Bungou Stray Dogs, Saiki Kusuo in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, and Levi Ackerman in Attack on Titan.

The Mononoke movie will air some time in Summer 2024 in Japan. There is no information as of yet if the movie will appear overseas, whether on streaming services or in theaters.

Twin Engine announced that it will delay the release of the Mononoke movie. This is due to needing to find a new voice actor to replace its lead, Takahiro Sakurai. Sakurai would have reprised his role as the Medicine Seller from the show. While Twin Engine’s statement did not explicitly mention it, this recasting likely has something to do with the voice actor’s controversy regarding his infidelity.

According to Twin Engine’s statement on its Twitter , the Mononoke movie takes place in Ooku. In Japanese history, the Ooku (literally “great interior”) was the women’s quarters within Edo Castle. Women with connections to the reigning shogun would reside in the Ooku and could not leave without express permission. If you were a woman inside the Ooku, you also could not have a relationship with a man. As such, one could consider life within the Ooku to be oppressive.

Since the Mononoke film aims to portray the suffering and the salvation of women within the Ooku, Twin Engine decided to recast Sakurai to stay in line with the moral themes of the film. For reference, Sakurai is in the middle of a controversy in which he was cheating on a total of at least three women over the course of over a decade. He is a highly prolific voice actor known for roles such as Cloud Strife (FFVII), Guntz (Klonoa), and Reigen Arataka (Mob Psycho 100). Anime Ayaka also recently opted to replace Sakurai, making Mononoke his second recast.

The Mononoke film is in development. Backers who ed it via crowdfunding will receive messages from Twin Engine on how Mononoke will proceed from here.

A movie for Mononoke will premiere some time in 2023 in Japan, with an all-new story. This is part of the 15th anniversary of the franchise. Takahiro Sakurai will reprise his role as the unnamed medicine seller, who is the main character of the show. So far, the website for the Mononoke movie features a teaser trailer that is a little over two minutes long. It mostly features scenes from the show, looking back on key moments. The video also includes some announcements for the Mononoke 15th anniversary. A stage play is in the works, and 15 artists will release commemorative art. Twin Engine also announced that it would open up crowdfunding for the 15th anniversary commemorative project. More information will come out in regards to these announcements soon.

Mononoke is an episodic series about a medicine seller who wanders about. On his journeys, he meets and destroys mononoke. Mononoke are essentially Japanese spirits and demons, such as a zashiki-warashi or bakeneko. In of genre, Mononoke is a mix of psychological horror and mystery. As mentioned earlier, Takahiro Sakurai voices the main character. His previous roles include Suzaku from Code Geass and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. Kenji Nakamura (Tsuritama) directed the show.

The Mononoke movie will debut in theaters in Japan sometime in 2023.
