The strategy genre is one of the most intriguing in gaming. It is so varied, from traditional RTS games to turn-based strategies to even full-on grid-based strategy RPGs. With the release of Civilization VII, the Siliconera staff has come together to give our picks for the best overall strategy games and RPGs of all time. These are the titles you should check out next for your tactical fix.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Best Strategy Game or SRPG 6y5r42

The Total War series has had me hooked since I bought Medieval 2 in a Steam Sale over a decade and a half ago. Perhaps the biggest draw for me is the formation-style battle mechanics that few other games have really attempted, it feels a lot more strategic than the more reflex-based RTS games I was used to. -- Elliot

When it comes to traditional strategy games, my personal favorite is Star Wars: Empire at War. I am not the biggest strategy game fan, though the Civ games have grasped me recently, so I loved the idea of commanding a massive army of troops from one of my favorite entertainment franchises of all time. It works really well, too, with land and space battles alike feeling thoughtful and deep.

In of strategy RPGs, though, I adored Triangle Strategy. Like 4X games, grid-based combat is not usually my cup of tea, but Triangle Strategy made it fast and fun. In addition, it had the right RPG hooks to draw me in. You could romance different characters, get to know the party, and make some solid choices that truly felt like they made a difference for the story and general outcome of the plot. Here’s hoping for a sequel soon. -- Cody

Civilization VII releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 11, 2025. It is currently available in Early Access.

Triangle Strategy Digital Game Returns to Switch eShop

Square Enix announced that it is once again possible to purchase a digital copy of its strategy game Triangle Strategy on the Nintendo Switch eShop. It first appeared there in March 2022, but it ended up being “temporarily unavailable” at the start of December 2024. Now that 2025’s begun, the company announced its return. The status of physical copies at retail remains unchanged.

In the case of Triangle Strategy on the Switch, physical copies were always available and those who grabbed a digital version of the game before its temporary removal could still re it. No explanation was offered for the removal initially. Now that it is back on the storefront, Square Enix is listed as the publisher. Initially, Nintendo acted as the publisher for the game upon its debut.

The Switch eShop removal happened right after the debut of the Triangle Strategy Meta Quest VR version. That launched in October 2024. A Windows PC version is also available. That debuted in October 2022, just after the Switch release.

While the game is about two years old now, there haven’t been any price drops. It is still $59.99 for a digital copy of Triangle Strategy on the eShop. That’s how much it is on Steam as well. The Meta Quest version is $29.99.

Triangle Strategy is available for the Nintendo Switch both physically and digitally on the eShop, PC, and Meta Quest headsets.

Most people may associate VR games with active titles, but Triangle Strategy on the Meta Quest offers a welcome sort of solace.

I love the Meta Quest 3, but sometimes I wish that there were more games from genres I turn to most often on my consoles or PC there. Of course, when you have a VR headset, titles that take advantage of those features and the ability to use your body as a controller will take precedence. But it’s nice when there are other options. Square Enix taking a chance and releasing a VR version of Triangle Strategy is exactly what I wanted, as the mixed reality Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro game takes advantage of the headset while delivering a more traditional tactical experience

To start, Triangle Strategy looks like a combination of the recent HD-2D games like Octopath Traveler and traditional strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics, and that is preserved in this Meta Quest VR adaptation. In fact, I’d even say the HD-2D element is even easier to appreciate, given the 3D perspective of the VR headset. You can really see how the character sprites stand out among the backgrounds, and rotating the field allows you to take in the effort put into environments and maps. It also looks as strong as it did in its Switch release, so we’re getting a chance to appreciate the art and design. The story segments are only in 2D and presented as though we’re watching a movie, compared to fights taking place in a three dimensional space on a table.

Which is another way in which Triangle Strategy feels a little extra special on the Meta Quest 3. Or at least, it did to me. The nature of it made me feel like I was an actual tactician. The optional mixed reality approach makes it work as Lego Bricktalesdoes. The table is in front of you. You can turn it around and look down on it from different angles. When you’re moving your characters around and attacking, it feels like positioning pieces on a game board or map. It’s a small touch that made it all feel a little more immersive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1U33aFQeec

Of course, I’m also a big fan in general of how some MR games are handled on the Meta Quest 3. While I do appreciate the more active titles in my collection, especially ones that give me a workout like Beat Saber, I like these types of titles for downtime. Like if I need to charge the headset, but still want to play a thing. I’ve found Triangle Strategy is good for those moments. I plug it in. I sit near the outlet. Maybe I put a show or music on in the background for white noise. Then, I play through a few maps.

Nothing too distracting, of course, because Triangle Strategy remains a fascinating game with an engaging, political tale to tell. Serenoa Wolffort ends up caught up in political machinations as Gustadolph Aesfrost begins a campaign to take over the Kingdom of Glenbrook. As the campaign continues, you’ll be able to decide what Serenoa’s goals will be, leading to building up an army with different allies and reaching different endings.

I know most people might associate VR games with active ones that have you exercising or moving in time with your characters’ actions, but Triangle Strategy on the Meta Quest is a welcome sort of solace. You can sit back and relax a bit, playing through a challenging and satisfying strategy game from a new perspective. The approach is handled well, and I really loved how much I felt like an actual tactician at a table, planning for an approaching battle, as I played.

Triangle Strategy is available in VR on the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro. The original version of the game can be found on the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Triangle Strategy Becoming a Meta Quest VR Game

Square Enix announced it will release Triangle Strategy, a game originally released on consoles and PCs, in VR on the Meta Quest. It will launch on October 31, 2024.

While the game normally costs $59.99 on other platforms, the Meta Quest VR version of Triangle Strategy will be $29.99. However, there is a pre-order promotion that discounts that price further. It is $25.99 ahead of launch. That sale ends at launch on October 31, 2024. The product page is live and confirms that the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro will all the game.

Square Enix’s first trailer for the game also shows what to expect when playing Triangle Strategy in VR.  You will essentially have an overhead view of the battlefield. You will use the Meta Quest controllers to place them on the map. It also seems you’ll be able to rotate the map to get a better 3D view of the space. As for story scenes, it seems as those will play out in a viewer that appears ahead of you.

Here’s the announcement video for the title.

Triangle Strategy first launched as a Nintendo Switch game in March 2022. A few months after that, a PC version appeared on Steam in October 2022. It is a traditional, turn-based strategy game with an isometric perspective on both platforms, but also uses the HD-2D sort of art direction involved in other Square Enix and Team Asano.

Triangle Strategy will come to the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro on October 31, 2024.

Book storage with Final Fantasy XIV FFXIV map cover shared by Square Enix for Map Day

The Japanese official X for Square Enix e-Store shared sharing map themed FFXIV, Octopath Traveler 2, and Triangle Strategy merchandise to coincide with Map Day, which falls on April 19th every year in Japan. None of the items are brand-new, since they have been released for quite a while. However, all of the items listed are still available for purchase on the Japanese Square Enix e-Store.

The first featured item is a 9 cm (~3.54 in) thick and 25 cm (~9.84 in) wide book storage box with the world map of FFXIV as its cover. Square Enix released this item on August 31, 2021, at 3,850 yen (~$24.90).

The second entry on the list is a 40 cm (~15.75 in) long and 23 cm (~9.05 in) wide face towel featuring the map of Solistia from Octopath Traveler 2. This item has been available since February 24, 2023, with a price tag of 1,800 yen (~$11.65).

The third and last item is a ticket case decorated with the Triangle Strategy world map, which has been available since March 4, 2022, at 3,100 yen (~$20). The case is 22 cm (~8.66 in) tall and can go up to 23 cm (~9.05 in) wide when unfolded.

Square Enix's new Japanese tweet covering the Map Day is also available to view right below:

The Japanese Map Day falls on April 19th every year. The day is not a public holiday, but it still holds significance in Japanese history. This is because the process of producing the first-ever accurately measured map of Japan officially began on April 19, 1800.

siliconera nintendo switch game of the year 2022

Whether they were testing the limits of the hardware or focusing on gameplay over tech, our Nintendo Switch Game of the Year 2022 selections all stand out through fun and mechanical polish. Check out which games made the cut below.

These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. For more of the year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2022 archive.

siliconera nintendo switch game of the year 2022 xenoblade chronicles 3

Winner: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 512g27

The phrase "fans of the genre" can be something of a punchline these days. Xenoblade Chronicles 3, though? It really seems to embrace the concept. The game delivers so much JRPG fans want, almost as if it's making a list and checking it twice. And done right? That can be just fine. It gives Xenoblade 3 a unified focus that keeps things fun for players. Also, when we're talking about JRPGs? "Fans of the genre" is basically everyone reading this right now.

Triangle Strategy f5kn

It's been such a good year for both tactical RPGs and pixel-art revivals, and Triangle Strategy is a shining example of both. It can take some time to get going, and it needs you to care about its world to get through its text-heavy storytelling. But once you're in? There aren't many games that can match its depth.

gotta protectors cart of darkness

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness 6t4f8

It certainly took its sweet time making it out of Japan, but Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness meshes the RPG-style depth of the 3DS release with the same-screen fun of the Xbox 360 original. And the localization? It’s legitimately funny, and that’s so hard to do even without language complications. If you missed it when it launched earlier this year, you owe it to yourself to rectify that now.

What are your Nintendo Switch Game of the Year 2022 selections? Let us know in the comments! And stay tuned for more of Siliconera’s GotY 2022 awards.

The PC version of Square Enix’s Triangle Strategy is now available for pre-order via Steam. It will be on a discounted price until October 13, 2022, which is when it comes out. The trailer for the game mostly shows off the characters and the story, as well as how the game looks like.

At almost four minutes long, the trailer is a combination of voiced dialogue and portraits of the characters. It also shows off some of the special attack animations for moves like Glacial Moon. The song that plays is “Song of Triangle Strategy” by Akira Senju. Senju previously worked on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Valvrave the Liberator, and Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike. He is also the main composer of the game.

You can watch the Steam announcement trailer for Triangle Strategy here:

Triangle Strategy uses pixel art sprites in a 3D environment, giving the game a retro feel. It is a turn-based tactical RPG set in Norzella, thirty years after the Saltiron War. It is called that because the war kicked off from a scarcity of salt and iron. However, a new conflict has arisen and key political figures from the three countries in Norzella – Glenbrook, Aesfrost, and Hyzante – must work together to solve it.

Triangle Strategy is readily available worldwide on the Nintendo Switch, and the Windows PC version will come out on October 13, 2022. You can read our review of Triangle Strategy here.

Triangle Strategy collaboration in Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent

A character from Triangle Strategy will appear in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The collaboration between Square Enix's titles will commence in the mobile game's Japanese release on July 28, 2022.

Square Enix has not specified which Triangle Strategy character will appear in Champions of the Continent. However, it has published a silhouette that looks like Serenoa Wolffort, the protagonist of the Nintendo Switch strategy RPG. All existing players will obtain this character for free. The character will appear as a 3-star character, and players will be able to raise them to a 5-star grade.

A new Japanese official live stream for Champions of the Continent will air on July 25, 2022, at 20:00 JST (7 AM ET). It will reveal more details on the Triangle Strategy collaboration content. The event will also come with a special game board that shows a different story ending based on the player's chosen route.

Triangle Strategy characters will add more to the Octopath Traveler mobile game's in-house collaborations. In March 2022, Square Enix temporarily added NieR: Automata's 2B, 9S, and A2 as guest characters that players could recruit for a limited time.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is available on Android and iOS devices in Japan. Square Enix has also opened pre-registration for the global English version, which is slated for release in Summer 2022.

Square Enix Trademark 4 YoRHa

On April 19, 2022, Square Enix filed a trademark for 4 YoRHa in Europe. Additionally, on the same day as the 4 YoRHa trademark, Square Enix also filed a trademark for Triangle Strategy in Europe. However, it should be noted that 4 YoRHa is the name of a series of DLC that was available in NieR Replicant. This DLC allowed consumers to access NieR: Automata-inspired costumes. More information about the filing of these trademarks could appear in the future.

During the NieR: Automata 5th anniversary event, Square Enix announced the production of an anime based on the game. A short trailer was provided alongside the announcement. However, it simply provided a look at the potential art style for the anime. No animation was shown. The NieR: Automata anime was announced to be in production in February 2022.

Since the release of NieR: Automata, the series has found success. This success has produced a remaster of NieR Replicant and the mobile title NieR Re[in]carnation. The remaster featured new visuals, an overhaul of the combat system to make it more fluid, and an entirely new ending. NieR Re[in]carnation is a mobile game that has featured established characters from the NieR franchise. However, it includes entirely new characters and is told in short storybook-like chapters.

Watch the Triangle Strategy Designer Draw Its Characters

Now that Triangle Strategy is out, there's a new video celebrating some of its characters. Nintendo shared a time lapse segment featuring Designer Naoki “Ikusy” Ikushima drawing Serenoa Wolffort and Frederica Aesfrost. They're the two leads in the game, and the clip shows them standing against a painted background.

Here's the full video showing the picture coming together.

Ikushima’s work may look familiar. In addition to deg Triangle Strategy characters, the artist worked on a number of other Square Enix games. Among them are character designs for Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default II.

As a reminder, Triangle Strategy is Square Enix's latest tactical RPG. It begins with a war. Aesfrost makes a move to take over Glenbrook, leaving Serenoa and his allies to stand against them. Throughout the campaign, players will try to convince their allies to commit to certain actions while also winning battles against foes.

Triangle Strategy is available for the Nintendo Switch.

triangle strategy review

Triangle Strategy, the second new game showcasing Square Enix's "HD-2D" tech, brings the distinctive look to a new sort of game. The tactical role-playing game renaissance has brought a lot of new and returning players to the subgenre! So it's good timing for Triangle Strategy's release. Does it capitalize on the opportunity?

In Triangle Strategy, you control Serenoa, heir of House Wolffort and one of the military leaders of his nation. You're pinned between two powers, each controlling a vital resource. Inevitably, of course, you're thrust into conflict! How things go from there depends on periodic voting sequences. The "scales of conviction," a central piece of the game's marketing, let Serenoa's companions vote about which path to take. The gameplay, then, is in convincing your friends to make the decision you want, as well as traditional tactical combat.

triangle strategy review

The playable units of Triangle Strategy all perform distinct roles. Some players may miss the custom unit crafting of games like Final Fantasy Tactics! But retaining strict classes means each feels very different. Precisely one unit can fly for most of the game. Exactly one can attack twice. It doesn’t quite reach the puzzle-like nature of Into the Breach, but it’s a step in that direction. You can augment units with stat upgrades and equippable accessories, but these don’t fundamentally change how they function.

While you can’t break a map with a devious character build, you can occasionally do so with knowledge of the game’s tactics. We won’t spoil any more than we must! But we found that we could render one near-hopeless map trivial if we flew our flying archer up to a roof. No one could reach her! And since the game doesn’t feature “permadeath” or any penalties for falling in combat, she could sit up there and pick off foes by herself for 25 turns.

okay, we did spoil a little by using this screenshot, but you see what we mean

Triangle Strategy is very proud of its narrative. There’s some merit to it — it does craft some interesting dilemmas — but you definitely need to prepare yourself for a lot of text. All the exposition makes for a very slow start, one a lot of players noticed in the pre-release Prologue Demo. This does get better with time, and those looking for more battling between narrative segments can take advantage of the legitimately interesting barkeep maps.

If you're looking to limit your reading time, you can stick to the main story beats. The character stories and green side scenes are interesting if you have the temperament to enjoy them! But skipping all of the story is going to detract from enjoying the decisions you make, so at least pay attention to those.

In your first playthrough, you’ll see a message when you earn points toward the game’s three narrative-related stats, but it obscures which you’re boosting. (You can see more information in a New Game+ campaign.) We'd recommend playing the first just trusting your own judgment, as all the paths have something interesting to see. Aiming for the "true ending" takes away from making decisions and seeing their consequences, something this game does better than a lot in its genre.

triangle strategy review

A big selling point of Triangle Strategy is its "HD-2D" aesthetic. The look, which started with Octopath Traveler, takes pixel art and coats it with all sorts of filters and effects. It’s handled fairly nicely here, but the subgenre does make things more difficult. Camera control’s sort of important in a tactics game with elevation and 3D presentation, as you regularly need to see around things. (Also, hey, people have preferences about height and default positioning!) So you definitely see the seams more often in Triangle than Octopath.

The game also seems to struggle to run at times on the Switch. As a result, the dev team appears to have dialed back the resolution, making for a blurrier experience even in handheld mode. We started to ignore it after a while! It’s tolerable! But if Triangle Strategy makes its way to other platforms like Octopath before it, it might see a significant visual upgrade.

You'll get the most out of Triangle Strategy if you bring a little patience to the proceedings. It starts slow. It throws a lot of story at you. The most interesting tactical powers show up in later levels. And you only see some of its compelling narrative beats in a second or third play. It's destined to be a game you either shrug off in the early hours or add to your list of favorites.

hd-2d game chrono trigger

With Triangle Strategy’s launch and the recent reveal of the Live A Live remaster, our eyes are on Square Enix’s “HD-2D” efforts. What do you want to see in the next HD-2D game? A remaster? An homage to a classic? The Siliconera writers made their picks.

Chrono Trigger is one of those classic games that I hear tons of great things about but I never actually experienced it myself. When I first saw my friend's older brother playing it? I (perhaps rather blasphemously) wrote it off as "ugly" compared to Final Fantasy X. Though it has been released on more modern platforms such as Windows PC and the Nintendo DS, I think it would be a fairly good game to experience in HD-2D.

My second choice is Brave Fencer Musashi for purely sentimental reasons, but that would require completely overhauling the game's aesthetics. Since the point of HD-2D is to keep that retro atmosphere, it probably ruins the idea. — Stephanie

next hd-2d game final fantasy

Is it too soon after the release of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster line to ask for a Final Fantasy HD-2D Remaster? The standout work on That Scene from Final Fantasy VI drove home how much I'd like to see my favorite FF game in the new style. And I've never seen Square Enix shy away from a chance to sell me something I like again! So let's consider this a distant promise.

In that case, I'd like a new original title. Sure, Live A Live is coming out soon, and is basically new to most people. But I'd like to see Square Enix reach further and apply the look to something a little more removed from the aesthetic we've seen so far. Maybe a sci-fi game in the vein of DS cult classic Infinite Space? Or a modern-age urban fantasy? — Josh

hanjuku hero

We have never seen a Hanjuku Hero game outside of Japan. These are real-time strategy games that showed up on multiple platforms in Japan. The series got its start on the Famicom, but installments appeared on the Super Famicom, Nintendo DS, and PS2 too! We've already seen Square Enix decide to release a former Japan-exclusive title worldwide thanks to a HD-2D remake. If it did it again with a Hanjuku Hero game? That would be pretty great! — Jenni

terranigma hd-2d game

Speaking of localizations: there's a well-regarded Enix RPG that never made it to America, and now would be a great time: Terranigma. There were a few hangups in the game's subject matter that likely put some doubts in Nintendo of America's mind in the 1990s. Now, though? That wouldn't be an issue. Its stellar reputation, which has grown over the years, would pair well with the HD-2D aesthetic and make for a title that would sell as well as it plays. — Graham

Learn More About the 3 Kingdoms and Characters in Triangle Strategy

There’s more news about Triangle Strategy, with the latest insights offering details about the kingdoms in the game. Major allies and enemies all come from these three regions of Norzelia. The new details go over what each area is known for.

First is the Kingdom of Glenbrook. It is home to many of the lead characters in Triangle Strategy, as Serenoa Wolffort’s House Wolffort calls the area home. So do of House Falkes and House Telliore.

Next is the Grand Duchy of Aesfrost. It is home to the Aesfrost family, which consists of Archduke Gustadolph and his family. This includes Frederica, who is Serenoa’s fiance.

Finally, the last of the Triangle Strategy kingdoms is the Holy State of Hyzante, which is home to the Saintly Seven characters.

In the meantime, people can see some of the new Triangle Strategy characters and story themselves. During the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, Square Enix revealed a new demo. This trial covers the first three chapters of the game. Once someone completes it, they can carry their data over to the full version.

Triangle Strategy will come to the Nintendo Switch on March 4, 2022.
