Blaze Entertainment continues to its Evercade ecosystem of devices with new cartridges, supplementing the library of licensed retro games with even more weirdness! We’ve been able to check out the 10 latest releases, so we can let you know what’s worth checking out and why!

The heavy hitters: Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain 6b1v2a

Tomb Raider has served as Blaze’s cornerstone release of the year, with the collection of three PS1 games included in the bundles for both the EXP-R and VS-R hardware revisions. Lara Croft might be the most recognizable mascot character it could hope to license, and even the earliest games in the franchise are more sweeping adventures than have been available in the Evercade’s quick-fun-focused selection. (It also probably didn’t hurt that Tomb Raider began its life at British studio Core Design; Blaze has shown a lot of love for its home.)

Blaze connected with Crystal Dynamics a second time, too, licensing Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for a dual-pack. Of all five of these games, action-platformer Soul Reaver definitely holds up best for first-time players. The late-’90s theming that tries a bit too hard aside, the traversal and combat controls work totally fine today and it’s worth a play for Evercade owners! These two releases are the start of the “Giga Cart” line for the company. Essentially, these are cartridges with a slight price bump in exchange for higher storage capacity. That seems fine with us! Though we’re sure these games weren’t the cheapest to license either, and maybe that helps bring more publishers to the platform.

Japanese publishers redux: Sunsoft and Data East Collections 1jrh

Sunsoft Collection 2 arguably bests the first release’s lineup, starring NES platformer Ufouria: The Saga and Game Boy Color gem Blaster Master: Enemy Below. It even throws in some Evercade-signature weirdos, like head-to-head fighter Galaxy Fight and surprisingly compelling Game Boy puzzler Pri Pri Primitive Princess!, which in aggregate we think outweighs the first’s Mr. Gimmick.

We spent a lot of time playing Ufouria on this collection — it’s a great game — and were reminded how PAL games can cause some display issues due to their different resolution. As it stands, they’re stretched wider than they should be, and we wish there were a display option to force 4-by-3 and remedy this. Seems doable in a firmware update, right, Blaze?

Data East Arcade 2 offers a handful of fun Tate Mode options, as well as some great co-op beat-’em-ups. Edward Randy is a blast with unlimited credits, and stars an action hero that definitely isn’t Indiana Jones and why would you even bring that up? Trio The Punch brings a different sort of feel to the genre, with lots of super-short levels. Joe & Mac Returns tries a single-screen take on the caveman game, and can be fun to work through with a friend.

We have games at home: Piko Collection 4 1m4x62

Piko Interactive has embraced its niche of picking up licenses for games that feel like store-brand takes on big releases. But on Evercade, where their first-party siblings are likely never going to appear? That’s kind of appealing. Without Mario Kart, you may actually want to play Street Racer. Without a big-name puzzler, it doesn’t hurt to have Mermaids of Atlantis on the menu. Star X may be missing that F and O you’d want in the title, but it’s as close as you’re going to get here.

The centerpiece of this cart is Glover. We have a soft spot for the N64 platformer, and this version got a bit of development attention to make sure it works okay on the Evercade. It’s definitely a game that you want to play on the VS with a third-party controller so you can use an analog stick, but thankfully the system s that through an in-beta menu option.

Tate Mode showcases: Toaplan Arcade 3 and 4 486o2h

One of the coolest features of the Evercade EXP handhelds is the Tate Mode toggle, allowing you to play games vertically on the display. So it’s good to see some more Toaplan collections with a bunch of Tate Mode-friendly options. There are, of course, shooters — Batsugun, Truxton II, Dogyuun and more — but we’re particularly interested in games that use a vertical display and still offer genre variety.

Ghox is a take on the Breakout formula, with the sort of flash and intensity you’d expect from a developer that usually makes shooters. There are tons of collectibles falling at you, and it even starts with two balls to juggle by default! There are also Out Zone and FixEight, which are arguably still vertically scrolling shooters but on foot rather than flying around. This subgenre, perhaps most popularized by Pocky & Rocky or Shock Troopers, offers its own sort of fun and the ability to control the pace a bit more.

Old computer weirdness: Thalamus and Bitmap Brothers Collections 3ad3r

The selection in the Evercade library has always been tinted by the company’s UK origins, and nothing makes that clearer than the wide array of old computer game representation. Thalamus Collection 1 includes 11 Commodore 64 games from the late 1980s and 1990s. In our experience, the C64 library is a sort of “you had to be there” experience, with “there” meaning “Europe in the 1980s,” and it’s not the easiest to encounter for the first time today. Still, we did have some fun with action-shooter Retrograde.

The Bitmap Brothers Collection 2 offers a selection of Amiga games, which are certainly also quirky but a bit more palatable to modern sensibilities. The Cadaver games are isometric adventure games that take a bit of time to learn to control, but they’re charming. The Chaos Engine 2 is the top of the bunch for us, a top-down action game designed for co-op. And platformer Gods is worth it for the title screen music alone. Added to the collection, perhaps confusingly given the cart’s blue-line categorization, is a console game! The PlayStation port of real-time strategy game Z also makes the cut after missing out on the first, red-line compilation.

New-retro showpieces: Metal Dragon / Life on Mars 18682d

We’re on record saying that the greatest value of the Evercade is in giving modern retrogames accessible cartridge releases, so we’re happy to see that continue with the latest dual-pack. Metal Dragon is an ‘80s-inspired run-and-gun game that unfortunately makes the number-one mistake in games: falsely thinking it’s extremely funny. We wanted to enjoy its action levels and modern approach to controls, but its writing — a Metal Gear spoof seemingly penned by an “edgy” teen boy in detention — is pretty much insufferable.

Life on Mars fares significantly better, thankfully. It’s a Metroid-style exploration platformer, set on a Martian base where all the robots are attacking you as you land to re-establish communications and find out what happened. We wish the controls were a bit tighter — jumping in tight spaces can be particularly irritating — but there’s enjoyment to be found here.

Most of these Evercade cartridges are available now. The Metal Dragon/Life on Mars dual pack and Toaplan Arcade 4 are slated for release in December 2024. For more of Siliconera’s Evercade coverage, check out our archive.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is in development from Crystal Dynamics and Aspyr Games. This collection of three more Tomb Raider games will release on February 14, 2025.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered will contain remasters of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. The Last Revelation and Chronicles were the final two games in the series released for PS1, while The Angel of Darkness was the first PS2 game and the final game developed by the original team at Core Design. The remaster will feature a visual overhaul for both PS1 games, although the original visuals will be available at the touch of a button. The Angel of Darkness appears to exclusively use upscaled versions of the original textures, as no split-screen comparison was shown off for that game in the announcement trailer.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was Lara Croft’s most expansive adventure at the time, taking her across Egypt and expanding out the level structure. Tomb Raider: Chronicles was an anthology game which saw Lara taking part in four smaller adventures in Rome, Russia, Ireland and New York. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is a moody mystery where Lara is accused of killing her mentor and is now investigating secrets within Paris and Prague. This game was also notorious for being unfinished on its original launch. It’s unclear if the game’s various bugs and control issues will be rectified for the remaster.

This latest remastered collection follows on from a previous collection, which contained the first three Tomb Raider games. The new collection will be launching exactly one year after the first, on February 14, 2025. This is a notable date for Tomb Raider fans, as it’s Lara Croft’s canonical birthday. The announcement of the new remaster comes shortly after the release of the Netflix Tomb Raider adaptation, starring Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered will release for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2025.

Lara Croft from Tomb Raider is being added to Dead by Daylight, as revealed by Behaviour Interactive. She will be releasing on July 16, 2024, although a test build is available now through Steam.

The star of the Tomb Raider franchise, Lara Croft is the latest survivor being added to Dead by Daylight. Putting emphasis on the survivor label, her appearance is based on the 2013 reboot game, although without any of her weapons. It is unknown if skins based on earlier games will be added.

Lara’s perks have also been revealed. Finesse will allow vaults to be 20% faster while healthy. Hardened reveals the killer’s aura any time you would normally scream, after opening a chest or cleansing a totem. Finally, Specialist grants tokens that improve skill checks for generators. All these perks are named after elements of Lara’s skill tree in recent games. Hardened and Specialist are named after the skill tiers in the 2013 reboot while Finesse shares its name with a skill from Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Lara Croft is one of many video game crossovers that have appeared in Dead by Daylight, although this is the first to not be based on a horror franchise. In addition to previous franchises such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Alan Wake, Behaviour Interactive have announced that Castlevania will also be added at a later date.

Dead by Daylight is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch. Lara Croft will be added to the game on July 16, 2024.

The first three Tomb Raider games will be released as a remastered collection for Nintendo Switch. The collection was revealed as part of the September 2023 Nintendo Direct. It will be released on February 14, 2024, which is also Lara Croft's birthday.

The new Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collection includes the first three games in the series, originally developed by Core Design. Each of the games has been given a visual overhaul, with new models to fit the HD look. However, the original polygonal PS1 look is also available as an option. The trailer shows off the new Lara Croft model, as well as glimpses of the Lost Valley from Tomb Raider, Venice and The Great Wall from Tomb Raider 2 and a brief look at Nevada and India from Tomb Raider 3.

This isn't the first time the Tomb Raider series has appeared on the Switch. The Lara Croft co-op games were previously ported earlier in 2023.

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered will be released on Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2024. It is unknown if it will be released for other platforms.

Soon people will head to Lara Croft’s home in PowerWash Simulator, as a Tomb Raider Special Pack is heading to the game. This will not be a social call. Rather, a player will be going there to clean things up. This will be a free addition and arrive on January 31, 2023.

People won’t actually see Lara Croft when cleaning up Croft Manor in PowerWash Simulator, as this Tomb Raider pack only involves cleaning. However, someone will be cleaning the inside and outside of the mansion. This means people will see the Tyrannosaurus Rex in the home, as well as artifacts she collected over the years. The exterior portion involves cleaning an obstacle course, vehicles like a Jeep, 4x4, and boat, and a fountain.

The announcement noted this is the first free expansion. It didn't feature any hints as to future additions.

The PowerWash Simulator Tomb Raider Special Pack will arrive on January 31, 2023 on every platform. The game is immediately available on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the PS4, PS5, and Switch versions will show up on January 31, 2023.

Two spin-offs of the Tomb Raider series are coming to the Nintendo Switch next year. Developer Feral Interactive is working on porting the Lara Croft games to Nintendo's platform.

According to tweets by Feral Interactive's official , the developer will bring the two Lara Croft games to Switch in 2023. Feral has experience in porting console and PC titles to Switch and mobile platforms. It ported versions of Rome: Total War, Medieval II: Total War, and Alien: Isolation, among others.

The games were spin-offs from the Tomb Raider franchise that originally launched for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2010. Then in 2014, both appeared for the PS4 and Xbox One. Unlike the main Tomb Raider titles, which are third-person action titles with a behind-the-back perspective, the Lara Croft games played out in a top-down, isometric viewing angle. They focused on cooperative play and puzzle-solving rather than combat and traversal. They were also unconnected from the "rebooted" Tomb Raider games took a more cinematic storytelling approach.

In 2010's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Lara teams up with an ancient Mayan warrior named Totec. The two must team together to bring an ancient evil back under control after Lara's loss of an ancient, cursed artifact.

The sequel, 2014's Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Lara teams up with rival Carter Bell, as well as ancient Egyptian avatars of the gods Isis and Horus. The game ed four-player co-op, and tasked players with protecting the world from the advent of the evil god Set.

The two Lara Croft games will come to Nintendo Switch in 2023. They're also available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Sweden-based publisher Embracer Group has acquired Eidos from Square Enix. More specifically, it has agreed to buy Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal. The three studios were known as part of Square Enix's collection of overseas studios and worked on series associated with the former Eidos Interactive brand. By the standards of recent major acquisitions in the game industry, the asking price was low: D 300 million [Thanks, Cision].

Formerly known as THQ Nordic, Embracer Group is one of the gaming industry's biggest holding companies. In recent years, it's grown its umbrella even more through several acquisition sprees. In 2021, it picked up Borderlands and Godfall developer/publisher Gearbox Software for USD 1.3 billion. By the end of the same year, it had made no less than thirty-seven acquisitions, with plans to complete up to thirty-five more. Its current portfolio includes many well-known gaming brands like Koch Media, Aspyr, 3D Realms, and Slipgate Ironworks. The Embracer x Eidos deal puts the company in ultimate charge of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain series. Crystal Dynamics was also known to be working with Microsoft on a reboot of Xbox shooter Perfect Dark and a new Tomb Raider game. It and Eidos-Montréal also developed the Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy games, respectively. The announcement makes no mention of whether the Marvel-branded titles will continue under Embracer or Square Enix.

For its part, Square Enix stated in its own press release that the transaction would enable it to "launch new businesses" and move forward with planned investments in fields "including blockchain, AI, and the cloud." Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda previously spoke positively about NFTs and blockchain-based gaming in his 2022 New Year's Letter. Though the acquisition of Eidos by Embracer Group represents a spinoff of Square Enix's largest "western" studios, Square Enix will continue publication of overseas-developed franchises like Just Cause, Outriders, and Life is Strange.

The first two Tomb Raider Switch games are on the way. Both are ports of spin-offs, rather than mainline installments. Square Enix announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris will both appear on the Switch. Exact release dates didn’t come up. However, Feral Interactive is working on them. They’re expected to appear in 2022.

Both of these Tomb Raider games are top-down action games that can be played alone or with other people. In Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Lara and Totec look for the Mirror of Smoke and deal with Xolotl and his minions. In addition to solving puzzles, you’ll have to find your way through the ruin and fight bosses. It first debuted in 2010.

Meanwhile, the second Tomb Raider Switch game is a bit more recent. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris showed up in 2014. It offers a similar gameplay, but ups the number of possible co-op players to four. Lara, Carter, Horus, and Isis are looking for Osiris’ fragments in Egyptian ruins. If they don’t find them, Set will take over the world.

As for Feral Interactive, it’s worked on Switch ports before. In 2019, it prepared Alien Isolation and GRID Autosport for the system.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris will be the first Tomb Raider Switch games and appear in 2022. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is also available on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Android and Apple iOS devices, and Google Stadia. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris can be found on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.

Square Enix has announced a War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Tomb Raider crossover event. The official War of the Visions Twitter provided a few details regarding the event. Additionally, the War of the Visions YouTube channel posted a video, sharing more details regarding the event. Starting on September 22, 2021 players will be able to obtain Lara Croft, the titular Tomb Raider, through the War of the Visions crossover event.

Lara will appear in War of the Visions with the Tomb Raider Job Class. This is an entirely unique Job that only Lara will be exclusive to this character. Her two Sub Jobs are Ranger and Gunner. Additionally, a special Vision Card will also be available to obtain for a limited time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Tomb Raider series. The Vision Card feature a special illustration of Lara Croft as she appears in the classic iterations of the Tomb Raider series. Logging in during the event period will grant players with the Vision Card.

However, in order to obtain Lara Croft in War of the Visions, players will need to roll on the Tomb Raider collaboration banner. As mentioned previously, this special banner will be available beginning September 22, 2021.

Other crossover events that have appeared in War of the Visions include a recent Final Fantasy VII Remake collaboration event, a Final Fantasy X event, and a Final Fantasy Tactics collaboration event. Each of these events had unique crossover characters that could be obtained for a limited time.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is immediately available on Android and iOS devices.

A new Tomb Raider collection appeared ahead of Square Enix’s March 18, 2021 Square Enix Presents. Both the Microsoft Store and PlayStation Store offer Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy, a collection of all three rebooted games, for the PS4 and Xbox One. It’s also temporarily on sale on both storefronts. [Thanks, Nibel!]

Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy gives people Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. All three are a part of the reboot series Crystal Dymamics first worked on for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2013. Since this is the definitive release, the Microsoft Store page points out it includes things like the Apex Predator Pre-order Pack, the 20 Year Celebration Pack, the Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch expansion, and other add-ons released for the three games over the years.

As for the sale, there’s a 60% off launch discount in effect. Normally, the collection will be $49.99. Until April 2, 2021, it is $19.99 on both storefronts.

Tomb Raider, as a series, turns 25 years old in 2021. Square Enix hinted that there will be some announcements related to its anniversary at the 10am PT/1pm ET/5pm GMT presentation on March 18, 2021. We also know a Tomb Raider anime adaptation is heading to Netflix.

Square Enix announced Square Enix Presents, video presentations that seem like Nintendo Direct and Sony State of Play style announcement streams. The first Square Enix Presents Spring installment will be held at 10am PT/1pm ET/7pm CET on March 18, 2021, and the company mentioned six specific games and series that will definitely appear. For example, Marvel’s Avengers, Life is Strange, Tomb Raider, and Balan Wonderworld will show up. However, according to the initial list, Final Fantasy games will not.

There will be some new game announcements at the March 2021 Square Enix Presents. To be specific, the next Life is Strange entry will appear and Square Enix Montreal will show some mobile games. It also confirmed games we know about, like Balan Wonderworld and Outriders, will both appear. Some Marvel’s Avengers updates and Tomb Raiders news will come up too. Finally, Taito will show off games, though its specific titles weren’t mentioned.

This does mean we might not find out about some recent Square Enix trademarks. It called dibs on some Live a Live and Chocobo GP names worldwide.

The first Square Enix Presents Spring 2021 show will appear on March 18, 2021 on Twitch and YouTube at 10am PT/1pm ET/7pm CET. It will last 40 minutes.

There’s big news in the world of Tomb Raider. Netflix announced a new show for its streaming service. A Legendary Tomb Raider anime is in development. And by Legendary, I’m referring to Legendary Entertainment. There’s no air date or concept art for it yet.

While we don’t know how Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime will look, we do know what it will cover. It is set in the same universe and timeline as the three most recent games. So we’ll see the same Lara Croft that debuted in the 2013 PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC game. The story here will take place after Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Which means that Trinity shouldn’t be a threat anymore and we will see a Lara who may see herself as more of a guardian.

This is one of two Legendary-related anime projects announced by Netflix on January 27, 2021. The other is Skull Island from Powerhouse Animation, which also worked on Castlevania. Judging by the name, it will likely involve characters like King Kong and Godzilla.

The pandemic has taken a toll on another video game movie. This time, it’s the Tomb Raider movie sequel. This latest film, which would have been set after the 2018 reboot starring Alicia Vikander, was supposed to appear in theaters on March 19, 2021. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many theaters to be closed for months and companies to alter schedules, MGM has delayed it. It now has no release date. [Thanks, The Wrap!]

The 2018 Tomb Raider was based on the rebooted games and drew from the 2013 game. Vikander played a younger version of Lara Croft who headed in search of Yamatai and Queen Himiko’s tomb after finding hints about both when looking in her missing father’s tomb. As one might expect, Trinity agents appeared, leading to Croft being involved in greater plots.

The sequel was first announced back in April 2019. This delay is an expected one. At the beginning of October 2020, Vikander told Entertainment Weekly that the pandemic delayed filming on the movie this year. When discussing future progress, she said, “We’re still in discussions about it, so I hope we can probably get to it next year.”

The Tomb Raider movie sequel no longer has a release date. The original movie reboot appeared in 2018.

Square Enix Montreal will allow anyone to the mobile Tomb Raider title Lara Croft GO for free. This announcement came via the official Square Enix Montreal Twitter. For a limited time, anyone can this turn based puzzle. As long as you the game before April 2, 2020, via either the Google Play or Apple App Store, it is yours to keep for free. The PC version is not part of this offer, but it is currently 75% off in the Steam Store.

Lara Croft GO is a Tomb Raider title that pits players against obstacles and other environmental hazards as they explore the ruins of an ancient civilization. Players move Lara around the map in board game fashion to solve various puzzles and uncover the secrets hidden in this ruins. So if you're interested in a timesink while staying in doors, this might just be the game for you.

Both Tomb Raider (2013) and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris were recently given away for free as well. This promotional offer was held from March 20-23, 2020 and allowed fans to redeem either title on Steam or via the official Square Enix store.

Lara Croft GO is available for Android devices, Apple iOS devices, and PCs.
