Western RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Fallout, and Dragon Age are all well known for having dating and romance options, but they are less common in JRPGs. While many JRPGs have romantic storylines, it’s less common that they have dating sim elements where you can choose from a variety of different partners. If you’re looking for a JRPG to play with dating sim or romance options, here are 10 of our favorites.
When people think of JRPGs with romance options, many think of the Fire Emblem series, which has long allowed people to marry certain units and strengthen them. Fire Emblem: Awakening gets exceptionally deep into the romance options, and you almost need a spreadsheet in order to organize everyone optimally. Not only will you be planning out your marriage – and the spawn that ultimately comes from that relationship – but the marriage and children of your other units. Certain marriages will produce offspring with different traits that can give an advantage in battle, making romance strategic.
Almost since the beginning the Persona series has had romance and dating options – more on that later – but they became far more overt with the modern series. In these games you can romance as many people as you like, but just be aware that if you invite them out for a date at the same time, they tend to not vibe with it. We’ve chosen Persona 3 Portable to represent the series, as it has a male and female MC with different dating opportunities. One of the cheesy things I love about this is that if you date one of the characters that dies mid-game, there is a post game dialogue that lets you know they are just in a coma. There aren’t many JRPGs where smooching will save lives.
Most of the games in the long-running The Legend of Heroes series have some dating or romance aspects, but the Trails of Cold Steel subseries takes it to a new level. There are four games in Trails of Cold Steel and while romances start fresh in every game, there are bonuses for characters that you romanced in other titles. In the first entry, if you choose someone to take to the dance near the end of the story, they’ll receive an EXP boost in the second game. It doesn’t just offer you additional cutscenes, but a few sweet rewards for your affections.
Dragon Quest hasn’t always had romantic or dating options, but Dragon Quest XI added the option to date certain characters in the post game. It’s still completely optional, but it adds an extra layer to the after credits quests for those who are deeply invested in the game. After you’ve finished the main story you’ll be asked to rebuild Cobblestone and once done, you can choose another character to live with forever. While you can only technically marry Gemma, you can choose to cohabit with a number of other characters giving you some options.
Most of the Yakuza games don’t have dating sim or romance options outside of hostesses and that always felt more friendly than romantic. Yakuza: Like A Dragon switched this up with its personality stats that dictate which of six women our protagonist Ichiban can date. While it’s completely optional, dating certain NPCs and party has huge benefits, and there is even a side story related to dating all six women at once. For a man who fails so completely in love in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth he’s quite the lothario in his debut game.
Many of these games have dating or romance elements as an aside to the story, but Summon Night as a series is known for being part JRPG, part visual novel, and part dating sim. This is the series you will want to jump into if you want the dating to be at the core of your gameplay. At the end of every chapter someone will you up on the rooftop, and you can decide how much you vibe with them. While Summon Night 6 has some localization issues, you should try out the series if you want the quintessential JRPG meets dating sim experience.
Just like in the original Final Fantasy VII there are some hidden dating and romance options in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Things you do and say with different party throughout the game will determine how they feel about you, and this culminates in a date that you have at the Gold Saucer. In the original FF7 you could date Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, or Barrett, with Aerith being the standard option – sorry Tifa fans – but Final Fantasy VII Rebirth adds two new options. Cloud can also date Red XIII in Rebirth, or if you haven’t shared enough romantic moments with any of these characters you’ll share a romantic date with the boys: Cid, Vincent, and Cait Sith. Yes, at the same time.
Unicorn Overlord is one of the best games of 2024, and it also is the JRPG with the most dating and romance options. It’s all about recruiting characters and organizing them into armies to fight for the cause, and almost everyone you recruit can be romanced and married. In fact out of 70 recruitable characters you can smooch more than 60 of them. You need to build your bonds with everyone, by giving gifts, eating with them or having discussions, and maxing out your rapport means you can hand over the Ring of the Maiden and marry them. Aside from showing your love to that character they gain +5 in every stat, so there are definite benefits to falling in love.
Technically Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ isn’t a dating sim in the sense that you don’t pledge yourself to one person, but you do choose which characters to spend your time with, and there isn’t enough time to get to know everyone. Finishing your bond with a certain character will give you a special final scene and item near the end of the game, giving you more incentive to spend as much time as possible with your favorites. There is a canon choice here that gives you more insight into the ending, but if you have a favorite teammate, you’ll want to make sure you spend your time with them as well.
The modern Persona series – Persona 3 onwards – put romance and dating at the forefront as an integral part of the gameplay. However, romance options began with Persona 2: Innocent Sin where our protagonist Tatsuya can choose to date Maya, Lisa, or Jun. Yes, Persona 2 had a same sex dating option, which the modern series will not give us for some reason. Your choice of romantic partner doesn’t have any major outcomes on the story, and if you play Persona 2: Eternal Punishment you’ll know that Maya is Tatsuya’s canon romantic partner, but it is still a beautiful touch to this early story.

]]>Finally, the Switch release of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ might give the game its moment again! Almost 10 years after its original release, Aksys picked up the Switch version to release it worldwide. Considering how interesting it can be and all of the other elements making this particular release so valuable, I can’t help but hope it leads to more people giving it a chance.
Something isn’t right in Tokyo. Kou doesn’t initially realize it. He’s going to school and working part-time jobs as usual. But when he sees his classmate Asuka harassed when he’s leaving work at night, he gets drawn into assisting in fighting back against the Eclipse phenomenon. Using Soul Devices and eventually fighting alongside classmates who find themselves also able to fight back against the Greed monsters threatening innocent people. Yes, it is Persona-like, while still combining the Ys sort of action-RPG elements while in labyrinths.
Now, right away, you’re probably wondering why you should even head into the Switch version of Tokyo Xanadu eX+. After all, Aksys’ release is the fourth version of the game to appear worldwide. However, there are a number of reasons to give it a chance again. Enough so that I think it’s worth playing now more than ever.
The big one, and the thing I love most about heading into Tokyo Xanadu eX+ again, is that this is the best portable version of the game. The Vita version is difficult to come by now, and it’s only the standard release that didn’t add the extra scenarios, bosses, and content in any of the eX+ releases. (All of that is perfectly implemented in such a way that if you are new to the game, you won’t realize it wasn’t originally a part of the experience.) If you have the Steam version, you could hypothetically play it on a Steam Deck. However, it isn’t fully ed. It’s only classified as “Playable” there. So the Switch release is completely ready to go and perfectly suited for the system.
Aside from the definitive version of the game now being on the Switch, the other highlight for the Aksys release of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a fresh localization. It reads wonderfully. Everything is clear, concise, and perfectly gets the point across. Back in the day, I covered the Vita and PS4 releases. I enjoying them! It’s been a long time since I played, so I can’t 1:1 cite changes. But the new take is substantial enough that I could just tell as I went through it that it was handled a bit better.
There’s also the matter of this Tokyo Xanadu eX+ Switch release being the perfect preparation possibility. In March 2024, Nihon Falcom announced the Tokyo Xanadu 10th anniversary project. While it is going to be a new and original thing, playing the first game in this branch is invaluable. It gives you an idea of what to expect. You can see what sorts of encounters and gameplay you might experience. Also, who knows what sort of threads or Easter eggs could carry over. It’s invaluable.
I’m so glad the Switch version of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is here, as this is such a fun action-RPG. I always felt like it ended up being a bit overshadowed, due to the fact that it does feature some similarities to the Persona series and Nihon Falcom’s Trails line exploding in popularity. The combat is solid in dungeons. Its take on a modern adventure set in the real world is strong. The eX+ additions do feel valuable. Not to mention, the twist that comes up is good! It’s a JRPG worth playing.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. The original game appeared on the Vita.

]]>During the February 2024 All Aksys event, the company revealed details about the Tokyo Xanadu eX+ Switch versions and four otome games. Despera Drops and Tengoku Struggle: Strayside are new original titles, while Radiant Tale: Fanfare and Virche Evermore Epic: Lycoris are fan discs. There’s a Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II Switch, PS5, and PC February 15, 2024 release date confirmed as well.
As a reminder, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a Persona-like RPG from Nihon Falcom. Like the other title, people follow high schoolers with special Soul Devise abilities that allow them to protect the real world by heading into the Other World. The eX+ version adds additional content like insight into the character White Shroud. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ showed up on the Switch in Japan in June 2023, and is heading westward in June 2024. Aksys will also sell its four-CD soundtrack.
Tengoku Struggle: Strayside is one of the Aksys Switch otome games we already knew about. For this event, we got a release date. People will hepp the princess of the Underworld hunt down escapees on April 4, 2024. The standard version launch copies come with character cards, while the limited edition will include a soundtrack.
Despera Drops is the other entirely new otome game. It will be on the Switch in 2025. It follows a young college student named Mika Amamine who is held as a suspect in a murder, but then escapes with six criminals. All seven are pursued by the police and people who are after her specifically.
As for the two otome fan discs, they’ll both be out in 2024. Radiant Tale: Fanfare, the follow-up to the supernatural story about a circus gathering a certain sort of energy to save a prince, will be out in Summer 2024. That has five new epilogues for the existing love interests and two new routes with people you couldn’t pursue before. Meanwhile Virche Evermore Epic: Lycoris will appear in Fall 2024 and involves five new side stories that follow the original game.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is an enhanced version of the original Vita game released in September 2015. Some of the extras added to this version include a new playable character, new events, new costumes, and an additional story arc.
The story of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is set in an alternate reality in which Tokyo suffered a great earthquake on 2005. It took nearly a decade for the city to recover from it. The protagonist is Kou Tokisaka, high school student whose world changes after his encounter with the nightmare realm known as Eclipse.
In other Nihon Falcom news, on December 2022 the company announced that Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, an enhanced port of the original game, will release on the Nintendo Switch system.

Tokyo Xanadu was a large game. It had a rather substantial storyline that took the characters through the school year as they attempted to protect the city from the Eclipse Gates. There were even two endings to earn and a new game plus to enjoy. But now that Tokyo Xanadu eX+ has arrived, it provides even more motivation to keep on going with the game and return even if it feels like you have accomplished everything.
First, let’s go over the endings available and how you get them. There are two possible you’ll encounter through the course of normal events. The normal ending is the one you will get first. After seeing it and saving, people who have eight stars or higher in Courage, Virtue, and Wisdom will be able to reload their save and head into an epilogue that will take you to July 24, 2015 and let you really wrap up the story. Once you beat that, you get to see the true ending, save to create a clear data file, and get to unlock the After Story.
The After Story brings people to October 2015 and guarantees that the true ending of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is canon. Part of this is an opportunity to enjoy lighthearted fun with friends. The White Shroud is there. You can carve Jack O’ Lanterns. There’s dancing with the mall mascot. You can hand out balloons. SPiKA is there to perform. But even more importantly, this side story guarantees that any ties left loose after the true ending are wrapped up and the evil we faced in the main story is over. It also hints at a possible successor to the game.
Once Tokyo Xanadu eX+’s After Story is done, people might start wondering about what sorts of extras and new game plus adventures await. Well, it ushers people into new activities and challenges. Once After Story is over, a boss rush mode opens up. You can fight all of the bosses separately or one after another. It also means you are in a good place to start using that clear save file for a new game plus adventure. Each time you beat the game, you get points that let you carry over new things or earn awards. So you can carry over character level, Greed level, Soul level, your cash, gems, and medals, your items, your books and info, and/or your NiAR and battle information. You can also earn awards like “Hot Spring Wear,” “Dive in!,” and “Fashionista,” which are tied to costumes, get max Affinity Shards, have 200,000 yen, or unlock Infinity Mode, where all monsters are 50 levels stronger.
The main reason to go through a new game plus file on Tokyo Xanadu eX+, aside from maybe experiencing a different difficulty level or seeing things you may have missed the first time around, is to go through additional Eclipse Gates. There are six bonus ones in a new game plus run. You can find them in chapters three, four, five, six, seven, and the epilogue on the way to the true ending. The chapter three one at Houraichou’s oasis, in chapter four you need to check the Kokonoe Shrine, in chapter five head to Nanahoshi Mall, in chapter six the Morimiya Academy’s pool has a gate, you need to visit the Brick Alley in chapter seven, and the X.R.C. in Morimiya Academy holds the final one.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ just gives people so much to do in this second go around. It’s about more than just the side stories that pop up to offer a more detailed look at characters along the way. The new After Story is quite substantial. Once it is finished, you can take the time to fight all the bosses again. And of course when you have a cleared save file, you can choose things to carry over and explore bonus dungeons. It’s a fun and substantial game.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is available for the PlayStation 4 and PC.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a JRPG reminiscent of the Persona series. High schools students with exceptional powers are able to go into special dungeons to defeat horrifying monsters. The twist is, it has a Ys battle system. The White Shroud segment we’ll look at today shows exactly how capable characters can end up being.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+, for those who missed out on the PlayStation Vita version of the game, feels like Nihon Falcom’s reaction to the popularity of the Persona series. It places people in a modern city with high schoolers who suddenly get Soul Devise abilities that allow them to investigate Eclipse Incidents that open portals to a place called the Other World. This essentially transformers them into Ys-like dungeons where people actively attack opponents and rely on combos and elements to take advantage of enemies. It is quite a detailed game and we get to see a group of amateur heroes grow into protectors. But there is one character who is already established. That is the White Shroud.
Since Tokyo Xanadu eX+ has just come out today, I will be avoiding spoilers about White Shroud’s identity. But in the original Tokyo Xanadu, he is this legendary figure. I like to think of him as the Tuxedo Mask of the game. You know he must be capable and competent, because he is a Soul Devise who has been protecting Morimiya City all by himself. Considering the game always sends you into Eclipse Gates with partners, it is telling that this hero is capable of handling things on his own. Yet, you know he must also be someone you know, because that is how these games work.
You get the opportunity to play through White Shroud’s first side story rather quickly. After beating Tokyo Xanadu eX+’s first boss with Kou and Asuka, it is possible to pursue this other, brief path. There are six of these side stories, by the way, and White Shroud gets two. He also eventually becomes playable in the After-Story. We follow White Shroud on April 18, 2015 at 12:25am. He is at the hospital. He finds his way inside to investigate and search for an Eclipse Gate. While you can hear his voice, it is slightly muffled to obscure his identity. Even though we are used to see him as important, this is a moment where he is unsure, so we can see he is just as human as the other characters.
What is really nice about having this as the first side story, and so early, is that it gives you a feeling of power. In the first dungeon, we are as in the dark as Kou is. We are not quite sure of ourselves yet. But by having access to White Shroud in this segment, we get an early taste of what things will eventually be like in Tokyo Xanadu eX+. His holy sword, Alka Regus, is incredibly strong. It is connected to the Light element, something only he possesses. There is no need to switch to another character to exploit core weaknesses, because the only thing it is not effective against is darkness. He even has a number of wonderful skills, like the ranged arrows, that really make him a well-rounded, initial character for people to find their footing with in the game.
It also gives us hints of what is really happening in the world. We are more in the dark in the original Tokyo Xanadu. While the first side story for White Shroud is quite short, it does give us new insight into what is happening. Gravitas is leant to events that suggests we will get more involved in the world’s events. And, even though he seems so established and strong otherwise, here we see that he can have moments where he does not know everything either. It humanizes him, but still keeps him this strong icon that is absolutely more adept than we are.
I feel like it makes Tokyo Xanadu eX+ stronger. By seeing this hero so early on and having a better idea of what he and experienced Soul Devise s are capable of, we get to see what to expect as we grow as players. We get hints at things to come. It is a nice and satisfying taste of another side of Morimiya City’s story.

Right behind it was Geten no Hana with Yumekari Aizouban, Koei Tecmo’s otome title on PS Vita, which finished at #9 with 5,309 copies sold.
