Scarlet, a new movie from Mamoru Hosoda, will come out on November 21, 2025 in Japan. In other territories, Sony will release it on December 12, 2025.

The trailer is thirty seconds long, and it gives a look at the action and grim world Scarlet will take place in. According to the synopsis, Scarlet follows the titular princess who wakes up in the world of the dead after she fails to avenge her murdered father. In this world of insanity, Scarlet must finish her revenge and reach the Endless Place, or else her existence will disappear.

Mamoru Hosoda is a Japanese film director and animator who’s known for movies like Digimon: The Movie, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children, and Summer Wars. The promotion material for Scarlet puts special emphasis on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. In both the trailer and its description, it notes that Scarlet (the protagonist of the movie) is a shocking heroine who breaks all rules of contention, and that she appears nineteen years after The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which came out in 2006.

Scarlet, the newest movie from Mamoru Hosoda, will air in Japanese theaters from November 21, 2025. Then, it'll appear in international theaters from December 12, 2025.

A hammer shaped after the Godzilla foot will appear courtesy of Castem. Toho revealed the product via the official Japanese social media of the Godzilla franchise. Castem will produce it to be functional as a real hammer, so people will be able to use it to have the kaiju monster literally stomp nails down.

The two companies are collaborating to produce the iron foot hammer, which will be based on Godzilla's model from the 2001 movie Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Together with the wood handle, the whole hammer will measure around 30 cm (11.81 inches) long. The handle will also feature a Godzilla 70th anniversary logo, which was reached in 2024 after the kaiju's inaugural film launched in November 1954.

The Japanese official Godzilla social media provided a link to the hammer's listing on Rakuten, where it costs 6,930 yen. But even though the Japanese web store may international shipping via Rakuten Global Express, the listing page reveals that it has no legal methods to ship this product overseas.

However, Castem has also been known to have an eBay storefront where it sells its products globally, as in the case of the Cup of Alphonse from Fullmetal Alchemist. We can confirm that an official eBay listing for the Godzilla Hammer is available for people residing elsewhere worldwide at $70.65.

The Godzilla foot hammer is available to order worldwide. Castem will process all received orders and ship the products within five business days.

A movie adaptation of indie game The Exit 8 is in production, and it’ll come out some time in 2025. Toho has ed a short trailer onto its YouTube channel.

It features a very familiar subway station, as well as a very familiar middle-aged man. A creepy child-like voice reads out the rules for the game. Then, at the end, we see the same middle-aged man and same hallway. There’s no information on the plot or characters for the film adaptation in this trailer, as it’s only giving a basic idea of what the story is about for those who might not be familiar with the source material.

The Exit 8 is an walking simulator and puzzle game that came out in late 2023. The point of the game is to try and escape a never-ending subway station, turning back when you notice any abnormalities in your surroundings. It achieved popularity through word of mouth, as well as multiple streamers who ed themselves playing the game throughout 2024. A sequel, Platform 8, came out in 2024 with a similar premise. Kotake Create, the developer, stated that he doesn’t plan on making any more in this genre, and he’s working on an action game instead.

Netflix announced that it would offer Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color for subscribers to watch, and there’s a new trailer teasing its launch on the service. As of August 1, 2024, it is now available.

Godzilla Minus One launched in October 2023. It’s a live-action Reiwa entry in the series. The actions in and around WWII led to Godzilla becoming active, and the film focuses on the effect of this on Japan and actions taken by a former soldier named Koichi Shikishima as a result of his encounters with the kaiju. 

Following the original theatrical release, the Minus Color version of the film debuted in January 2024. This is an entirely black-and-white version of the movie. It was completely and totally edited and adjusted for that release.

Toho Movie has ed a trailer for the 27th Detective Conan movie, Hyaku-man Dollar no Michishirube. It'll come out on April 12, 2024 in Japan.

The title for the movie can loosely translate to “Million-Dollar Guiding Star.” The trailer is half a minute long. It looks like a major event in the movie will focus on Hattori fighting Kaitou Kid, and he expresses surprise when he sees Kid’s face without his monocle. According to Weekly Shonen Sunday, the story will involve Kaitou Kid stealing a "jewel" in Hakodate. There might also be a confession scene between Heiji and Kazuha.

The entire cast from the show will return to reprise their roles. Chika Nagaoka, who worked on the 23rd and 24th movies, will direct the movie. Meanwhile, Takahiro Ookura, who worked on the 21st and 25th movies, will provide the script.

The previous Detective Conan movie, Kurogane no Submarine, made over 13.8 billion JPY (about $94 million) at the domestic office. It came out in April 2023. It is the highest-grossing Detective Conan film in the history of the franchise, beating out The Bride of Halloween, and was the first Detective Conan film to gross over 10 billion JPY.

The 27th Detective Conan movie, Hyaku-man Dollar no Michishirube, will air in Japanese theaters on April 12, 2024.

A live-action film adaptation of Teasing Master Takagi-san is in production. It’ll come out on May 31, 2024. [Thanks, Livedoor!]

Rather than a faithful manga adaptation, the live-action show will have an original story. It’ll feature Takagi and Nishikata in their early twenties. For reference, the story is a rom-com slice-of-life that takes place in a middle school.

Filming took place on Shodoshima in the Kagawa Prefecture. Shodoshima is the setting of Teasing Master Takagi-san. The live-action story will focus on Takagi, who returns to her old middle school as a trainee teacher. There, she meets Nishikata, who is working at the school as a gym teacher.

The live-action version will star Mei Nagano as the titular Takagi. Some of Nagano’s previous roles include Suzume Yosano in Daytime Shooting Star and Anzu Murata in Burn the House Down. Fumiya Takahashi will star alongside her as Nishikata. Some of Takahashi’s prominent roles are Aruto Hiden in Kamen Rider Zero-One and Gaku Kitada in Fermat no Ryori.

Teasing Master Takagi-san is a slice-of-life comic that originally ran in Monthly Shonen Sunday Mini and Monthly Shonen Sunday. It started serialization in June 2012 and ended in October 2023. There was also an anime adaptation and a game based on the story. The story follows middle school students Nishikata and Takagi, who sit beside each other. Takagi likes to tease Nishikata with jokes or pranks, so Nishikata tries to get back at her. But he usually fails to do so because Takagi will take advantage of his weaknesses and turn the situation around on him.

Teasing Master Takagi-san is in production and should come out on May 31, 2024.

Wit Studio and Cloverworks released a new short film using Spy x Family to remind the general public of basic movie theater etiquette. You’ll be able to watch it from all Toho cinemas in Japan. All of the immediate Forger family are present. It focuses on Loid and Yor teaching Anya how to behave when in a movie theater. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

If you’ve ever been to the movies, you’ve likely seen PSAs before a movie starts about basic manners. Examples include turning off your cellphone and not talking during the movie. This is because both of these things will disrupt the other viewers around you. While it’s more a legal issues than an etiquette one, the video might also touch on illegally recording the movie so as to distribute it online before an official Blu-Ray or DVD  release.

This movie etiquette video came out ahead of the Spy x Family Code: White film. Spy x Family Code: White will see the Forger family on vacation, only to find themselves in a situation where they have to go save the world. It will debut on December 22, 2023 in Japan.

Spy x Family is available to stream on Crunchyroll, and Viz Media is releasing the manga in English.

More Makoto Shinkai movie characters are getting turned into figures. Good Smile Company announced three more at WonHobby 36 from Suzume. An unpainted prototype of a Suzume Iwato Pop Up Parade figure appeared, as did a reveal of Nendoroids of both Suzume and Sota Munakata.

First, here’s the unpainted prototype figure. It is technically a figure of both Suzume and Sota, since she’s carrying the “chair” in it.

As a reminder, Makoto Shinkai’s proved quite a success in Japan. It ended up earning over 1.88 billion yen in its first three days in theaters. It was also nominated for a Japan Film Prize. It will still be some time before it appears worldwide, as Crunchyroll announced it will show up in theaters in the UK and US starting on April 12, 2023.

There's no release window yet for either the Suzume Pop Up Parade figure or Suzume and Sota Nendoroids.

The physical media release of Hideaki Anno's Shin Ultraman "reboot" film is coming in the spring of 2023. An post on the film's official announced that the Blu-ray (BD) and DVD edition of Shin Ultraman will arrive on shelves in Japan on April 12, 2023. The movie first debuted in Japan on May 13, 2022. It premieres in US theaters in January 2023.

The Shin Ultraman BD and DVD release comes in several variants:

• Standard 2-disc set (BD/DVD) - 4,180-5,280 Yen (about $32-$40 USD)
• Blu-ray Special Edition 3-disc set - 7,480 Yen (about $57 USD)
• Blu-ray Special Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray 4-disc set* - 9,680 Yen (about $73 USD)

*The fourth disc is a 4K UHD Blu-ray of the film, but the content is otherwise the same as the 3-disc set.

In all packages, the second Shin Ultraman BD or DVD contains approximately 100 minutes of bonus footage. The footage consists of:

• A 3-part special report
• Promotional clips
• Commercials and trailers
• Mefilas clip collection
• Zarab clip connection
• Zoffy and Zetton clip collection
• Music video of Kenshi Yonezu singing the Shin Ultraman theme song

Of particular note is Shin Ultra Fight, as it is a Tsuburaya Imagination-exclusive mini-series. Spinning off from the film, Shin Ultra Fight was organized by the Shin Ultraman staff, including Hideaki Anno. It's 1970 Tsuburaya series Ultra Fight, which was conceived as a "zero cost" program made to cater to folks who just want to see fight scenes. Similar to modern fan-made "battle edit" videos that pit two characters against each other by mashing up their fight footage, Ultra Fight used edits of existing footage and minimal-budget shoots using existing costumes to create new, low-cost content. Shin Ultra Fight does similar things with the heavy CG used for Shin Ultraman by using uncorrected motion-capture data, placeholder textures, and even recycled digital assets to get that "budget production look" down deliberately.

The Blu-ray and DVD versions of Shin Ultraman arrive in Japan on April 12, 2023. International release plans have not yet been announced.

Shin Ultraman, the standalone movie "reboot" of the classic tokusatsu hero franchise, will appear in theaters in the United States. The announcement was delivered by Tsuburaya Productions at the Ultraman Connection at Anime NYC over the weekend. The Shin Ultraman English showings will be held by Fathom Events over two days: January 11-12, 2023. Fathom has not yet announced planned locations for the showings.

Tsuburaya also revealed the official Shin Ultraman English logo in a Tweet.

The logo replicates the simplistic brush-stroke lettering used in other "reboot" films influenced by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. The styling was also seen in Shin Godzilla, which was co-directed by both Anno and Shin Ultraman Director Shinji Higuchi. A similar style is also used for the Shin Kamen Rider film, though it does not have an official English logo.

Shin Ultraman debuted in Japan in May 2022. It tells a new story closely influenced by the original Ultraman series and its immediate predecessor, the 1960s Kaiju series Ultra Q. It follows the activities of the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol Enforcement Unit (SSSP), a team of government agents tasked with finding ways to defeat the many Kaiju that menace Japan. During one attack by the Kaiju Neronga, a new humanoid being appears, destroying Neronga with a powerful beam. The SSSP must then find out more about the new being, codenamed "Ultraman", with their efforts complicated by geopolitics and the influence of powerful alien lifeforms with designs on Earth and its people.

Shin Ultraman will debut in the United States on January 11-12, 2023. Tsuburaya, Toei, Toho, and Studio Khara have plans to bring the Shin reboots together in some way, but haven't announced details yet.

Makoto Shinkai's latest film, Suzume no Tojimari (a.k.a. Suzume) broke records for the Your Name. director. The film premiered in Japan on November 11, 2022. According to box office figures, Suzume earnings topped 1.88 billion Yen (about $13.5 million USD) in less than three days, making it the top-charted film in Japan for the weekend. The numbers also exceeded those of his previous films, Your Name. and Weathering With You. These make Suzume the strongest-performing film of Makoto Shinkai's, in of first-weekend returns.

In addition to the Suzume earnings figures, the tweet also noted that more than 1.33 million tickets were sold that weekend in Japan. It also boasted that Suzume's "journey" has just begun, seeing as the film's international showings are still in the queue. Suzume is set to premiere in over 199 countries worldwide, making it one of the widest-ever distributions of a single director's work.

Suzume follows the titular high schooler from Kyushu in Japan. Suzume encounters Souta, a young man who is "looking for a door". That door, a mysterious portal standing upright in the middle of ruins, unleashes a series of catastrophes when Suzume accidentally opens it. Suzume and Souta must then work together to close a series of doors all across Japan. The one catch: Suzume might have to do most of the heavy lifting, seeing as Souta's been turned into a child-size, three-legged chair.

Suzume is in theaters in Japan. Its international release is set for 2023, to be handled by Wild Bunch and Crunchyroll outside of Asia.

A new Godzilla movie will release on November 3, 2023. This information was shared through the official Godzilla Twitter . However, details about the production are fairly scarce. What we do know is that Director Takashi Yamazaki will serve as both the writer and director on the film. Yamazaki's credits include the CGI Doraemon film, Stand by Me Doraemon, and the Parasyte adaptation. More information about the film will appear sometime in the future.

In other Godzilla related news, Studio Khara and TOHO teamed up to release a Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover in the form of a pachinko machine. The announcement trailer shows the EVA pilots going head to head with the iconic monster. King Ghidora was also shown in the footage. Additionally, the pachinko machine will also feature an entirely unique story, and include two new songs.

In January 2022, it was announced that another live action Godzilla adaptation would be appearing on Apple TV+. The adaptation will be handled by Legendary Entertainment. However, much like the new Godzilla film further details about the television show have yet to be announced. More information about the live action adaptation will appear in the future.

Toho has announced that production for the movie Suzume is complete, less than a month before the film's opening day. Furthermore, Toho warned fans that there will be depictions of earthquakes and earthquake warning alarms within the movie. Suzume will begin showing in Japan on November 11, 2022. [Thanks, Dengeki!]

In a recent tweet, director Makoto Shinkai updated fans on the status of the movie. With a photo showing the movie displayed in the background, Shinkai announced that the team had wrapped up the production of the movie. Later, the official Suzume Twitter also issued a message to fans. The noted once again that production had finished, and revealed that some scenes would contain depictions of earthquakes and earthquake warning alarms. While the earthquake alarms would differ from those used in real life, Toho warned fans of the potentially sensitive content when viewing the film.

While depictions of earthquakes aren't entirely rare within Japanese media, earthquakes have become sensitive subjects after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, as well as the subsequent 2016 Kumamoto and 2018 Hokkaido earthquakes. As such, it's common for movies and anime to warn moviegoers and viewers about any earthquake or tsunami-related content beforehand.

The latest trailer for Suzume appeared earlier this month, though it did not show any depictions of earthquakes. Instead, it focuses on the main character Suzume and Souta, who become close after discovering a mysterious door.

Production for the Suzume movie is complete, and the film will debut in Japan on November 11, 2022. The film's international release is expected sometime in 2023, with Crunchyroll and Wild Bunch handling distribution outside of Asia.

The crossover between Evangelion and Godzilla will appear again in Japan's pachinko centers. Khara and Toho revealed that they are working with Bisty and Fields to release a new pachinko machine titled P Godzilla VS Evangelion ~G Cell Awakening~. It will feature a new story that includes an original fusion between Evangelion Unit-01 and Godzilla.

The pachinko title's storyline will have events from Godzilla and Evangelion take place in the same universe, with the former happening earlier. After a mysterious disappearance, the eponymous kaiju will reappear in the middle of the battle between NERV and the Angels. King Ghidorah will also appear as the leader of the Angels. Godzilla will then launch a beam toward Evangelion Unit-01's core that gives the latter a new transformation with the kaiju's features in order to fight King Ghidorah on a more equal footing.

Other than a new story, the pachinko machine will also feature three new songs. Rei Ayanami's voice actress, Megumi Hayashibara, will perform two new songs, "Shuuketsu no Hate ni (At the End of the Gathering)" and "Shuuketsu no Toki ~Territory~ (The Time of Gathering)," while the "Cruel Angel's Thesis" singer, Yoko Takahashi, will bring her newest song, "Teardrops of Hope."

The collaboration between Godzilla and Evangelion has been widely known since 2016, and most of the crossover projects appeared throughout the year. The collaboration also appeared in two Japanese mobile games: Monster Strike and Super Robot Wars X-Omega. While the latter title is no longer available, it featured an Evangelion Unit-01-colored MFS-3 MechaGodzilla in addition to the Godzilla itself.

The new Suzume trailer reveals more about the role of Souta (played by Hokuto Matsumura). The titular Suzume encounters Souta near her home, where she sees him attempting to close a mysterious, freestanding door emanating an unusual energy. The two bond over the door-closing, but one day, a mysterious cat turns Souta into a child-sized three-legged chair. Still able to move but unable to close the doors himself, Souta and Suzume must work together, traveling across Japan to close the doors and track down the sinister cat. The cat seems intent on opening further doors (or being there when they open) and is excited by the prospect of the disasters they threaten to bring.

Suzume opens on November 11, 2022, in Japan. An international release is set within 2023, handled by Crunchyroll and Wild Bunch outside of Asia.
