This week might not be a week filled with big game releases, but it will be a good one for fans of light novels and anime like Date A Live and KonoSuba. After a year of delay, Date A Live: Ren Dystopia will release for PlayStation 4, letting players woo Spirits via romance sim once again. The new heroine this time is a mysterious girl named Ren, who seems to Shido via a strange dream. When Shido wakes up, he finds a mysterious container by his pillow that becomes the key to the events that follow.

Butting heads with Date A Live is KonoSuba: Love for This Desire's Attire, featuring Kazuma, Aqua, Megumi, and Darkness in yet another hilarious adventure. This time, the party has been cursed so that the girls now have the exact opposite desires, and the only way to remove the curse is to have the girls dress up in clothes that help fulfill these new twisted desires. To this extent, players will have to send Kazuma and the crew on part-time jobs to scrounge up the money and materials to create new clothes, and depending on the clothes and character combinations, you'll get to see different events with the girls.

The following are this week’s Japanese imports.

Metal Max Xeno Reborn

Time for the latest import update. This week, Kadokawa Games is giving Metal Max Xeno a second chance with Metal Max Xeno Reborn. It is a ground-up remake of the PlayStation 4 title that explores new possibilities for the series. Rather than a turn-based battle system, the game uses a more action-oriented combat system that emphasizes the importance of the tanks even further. Another change is a shift to a more open-world style of exploration, rather than the point A-to-B method in the original game. (It was more like a traditional JRPG.) The story, while present, is de-emphasized, and the developers have even joked that you can completely ignore the heroine if you want this time around.

Apart from Metal Max Xeno Reborn, there is also Tomoyo After. It is a port of the CLANNAD spin-off that is coming to Nintendo Switch. The game is based on the all-ages version of the title and will also English text at launch, making for a good digital purchase option from the Japanese eShop.

Marvel's Avengers

Since there are so few actual imports this week, we're loosening up the definition a bit. Since it's a Square Enix game and Square Enix is a Japanese company, let's start with Crystal Dynamics' new action RPG title: Marvel's Avengers. The title features many fan-favorite Avengers, like Iron Man, Captain America, and Kamala Khan, and it takes place in a world where the Avengers have disbanded following an incident that destroyed most of San Francisco and the Avengers helicarrier. When Kamala discovers her powers and a conspiracy that seems to lead to the true culprit behind the original disaster, she decides to find the original of the Avengers.

The title features hack and slash-style gameplay, but with a focus on cooperation between various Avengers . Players are able to create their own versions of the heroes, such as specializing heroes into more attack or -based sets. There's also a variety of costumes to choose from, based on various Marvel comics.

A smattering of smaller titles are also launching this week in Japan. There is the latest game in the G-Mode Archives series of feature phone ports. Touhou Luna Nights is finally debuting on the Xbox One.

The following are this week’s Japanese imports.

Hajimari no Kiseki

This week's biggest new release is undoubtedly The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki, the latest game in Falcom's long-running RPG series. The game takes place after the events of the Cold Steel series, and helps clear up loose ends from all across the series. Lloyd Bannings and Rean Schwarzer return as two of the protagonists, while a third chapter revolves around entirely new characters who will help set up a new chapter in the series. This game will also be the last game to use the existing game engine used by Falcom since Trails of Cold Steel.

Apart from Hajimari no KisekiFinal Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition also returns on modern platforms to give the game a second chance. The game is very multiplayer-focused, having been originally released for Nintendo GameCube with Game Boy Advance compatibility, and the remaster will add in (region-locked) online multiplayer at the expense of offline multiplayer. Key features include the ability to combine magic with other players to create higher-tier versions, but players also need to make sure to carry the chalice across the game's various dungeons. The remaster adds in several more post-game dungeons, as well as the ability to play as other characters across the series via DLC.

Gleamlight

This week may be a quiet one for Japan in of game releases, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some highlights mixed in. Gleamlight, a Metroidvania with a stained glass art aesthetic, is one such example. In this game, you move and explore the world of Gleam—a world that has been organically designed so that you can find your way around to new areas without any help from the game's very minimalist UI. There's also no story in the main game to speak of, and it's up to players to discover more about this world and its history. The game is developed by Dico, and published by D3 Publisher.

Apart from Gleamlight, a new RPG creation tool is being released this week with RPG Maker MZ. Like the previous version RPG Maker MV, you can develop RPGs to work with smartphone touchscreens as one of the software's defining features. Apart from this, the default assets and map creation features have also gotten bolstered for the new entry.

The following are this week’s Japanese imports.

Nintendo Switch

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris Deadly Premonition 2

The latest Sword Art Online action-RPG, Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, launches this week. But that's not the only significant release coming to Japan. Deadly Premonition 2, a sequel to the cult classic survival horror game, is releasing ten years later as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Finally, the Bloodstained series gets a third entry with Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2.

SAO: Alicization Lycoris takes place in a world where the events of the anime diverge after a certain point. The game follows an original plotline that delves more into the different factions in Underworld and introduces a new heroine called Medina Orthinanos. You'll get to see Kirito fighting alongside the Integrity Knights, as well asother heroines like Sinon, Lisbeth, and Silica.

Deadly Premotion 2, meanwhile, is both a prequel and sequel to the original game. It, in part, follows a new FBI Special Agent named Aaliya Davis in Boston. Aaliya reopens an investigation into events that took place fourteen years earlier in the city of Le Carré, and her story will intertwine with that of Deadly Premonition protagonist York, who was the one in charge of investigating the previous case.

Finally, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 is a sequel to the 8-bit style spin-off developed by Inti Creates as a Kickstarter stretch goal reward for Ritual of the Night. The game takes place after the events of the first, and it features three new playable characters and co-op.

Blaster Master Zero PS4 Catherine: Full Body

June ends with a relatively uninspiring week in of Japanese releases. Of note is Blaster Master Zero and Blaster Master Zero 2, which are both heading to the PS4, with Limited Run Games physical editions set to release later in 2020. The games are a reimagining of the original Chou Wakusei Metafight and Blaster Master Zero, taking elements of both games to form its own narrative. While the first game takes inspiration from the original game, the sequel takes place in outer space and has its own original story across different galaxies, and features tons of Sunsoft references.

Another port is Catherine: Full Bodywhich makes its move onto the Nintendo Switch. If you haven't heard of the game, it stars a man named Vincent Brooks who cheats on his girlfriend Katherine, and starts having nightmares where he has to climb a tower. While the game is a puzzle action game where you must survive the tower climb, half the game is also spent in the Stray Sheep Bar, where you can chat with others, potentially changing the fate of others in the dream world. Full Body adds a third heroine named Rin, and changes the story to match, including a new route where you pursue Rin instead. The Nintendo Switch version includes all existing DLC, such as extra voices for Catherine, and Joker as an extra character in Babel Mode.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.

This week brings back a surprising strategy RPG series: Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia. It is a follow-up to a rather obscure PlayStation title. The game has you choosing one of six factions and taking control of commanders and monsters in order to turn the tide of battles, and eventually, war.

Other highlights include Shoujo Jigoku no Doku Musume, another new IP from Nippon Ichi that combines third-person shooter gameplay with the need to purify poisonous marshes across the stage. You play as a boy or girl who has somehow fallen into Hell and subsequently has their body taken over by a girl who calls herself a Poison Maiden. By obtaining five tickets, you'll be able to escape Hell by going to heaven and asking for a wish to return to Earth.

The Mr. Driller series also returns, albeit with a re-release in Mr. Driller DrillLand that is part of Bandai Namco's "Encore" series lineup. (Previous games include Katamari Damacy Reroll, and Mojipittan Encore.) However, this does mark the first time the Japan-only GameCube title has been made available in English officially.

Key/Visual Art's is releasing Summer Pockets Reflection Blue, an upgraded version of Summer Pockets that adds in several new and upgraded routes to the romance visual novel. GungHo's free-to-play multiplayer title Ninjala begins service this week. Finally, Death Come True is an interactive FMV game where your actions will affect the ending. It is directed by Danganronpa director Kazutaka Kodaka.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 7

While Western releases like The Last of Us Part 2 dominate the big debuts for this week, there are still a few Japanese releases to look out for. These include Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 7, the latest game in the otome romance visual novel and RPG series that also happens to be the first Neo Romance game from Koei Tecmo in a while. The latest game details the exploits of Nanao Amano, a regular high school girl who gets sent into an alternate Japan, where it turns out she's the secret daughter of Nobunaga Oda. As the game progresses, she'll get to hook up with one of the army's many charming generals.

Another release to look out for is Namcot Collection, also known as Namco Museum Archives. This is a virtual shelf of Famicom and NES games that you can buy individually, and if you buy all ten of the games in Wave 1, you can get a demake of Pac-Man Championship Edition as a bonus game.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.

Yomi wo Saku Hana

In a week without any big releases, you really need to dig deep to find good Japanese import releases. That's where Experience's dungeon-crawling RPG Yomi wo Saku Hana fits in, featuring illegally-hired miners who are sent underground to find new sources of energy in the mysterious structure known as Yomi. Fending off monsters using the Switch Boost system, the miners will get closer and closer to finding out more about the hidden ruler of Yomi. The title was announced back in 2016 and has changed a lot since, so it's a long-anticipated title for fans of the genre.

While not new to the West, The Wonderful 101: Remastered is also finally releasing in Japan. The stream of Kunio-kun and Jake Hunter Detective Story individual releases continue too, and Kamiko gets rare physical editions courtesy of B-Side Games.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.

Clubhouse Games

The are tons of classic games to play this week, and it's all thanks to Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, which is sure to provide lots of fun, especially in a time when many are staying indoors. While games like Connect 4, Darts, Texas Hold'em, and Checkers can easily be found in physical form, the variety pack also includes things like Bowling, Battle Tanks, Toy Baseball, and other interactive minigames.

As far as Japanese-exclusive releases go, we have Kowloon Youma Gakuenki: Origin of Adventure. It is a fully-voiced remaster of a PS2 title by Atlus that is considered a cult classic. It's a visual novel where you'll be able to select different responses based on an emotions grid that is also a first-person dungeon crawler.

Finally, here's a shout-out to Touhou: Mountain of Faith, Subterranean Animism, and Undefined Fantastic Object, which will release on Steam this week. While the games will only have a Japanese language option, they are a way to play more of the classic bullet hell series in an official capacity.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.
