The newest trailer for The Rose of Versailles anime focuses on Oscar Francois de Jarjayes. This is one of the main characters from the series, as well as perhaps the most iconic. MAPPA also announced six new voice actors for The Rose of Versailles cast. [Thanks, Comic Natalie!]

The trailer has English and Japanese subtitles. Over the course of a minute, we can see Oscar’s past and struggles, as well as how she chooses to face the commoners during the French Revolution. As a reminder, veteran voice actress Miyuki Sawashiro (Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter (2011) among many, many other roles) voices Oscar in this adaptation of The Rose of Versailles.

Here are the new voice actors who’ll appear in The Rose of Versailles anime:

• General Bouille: Akio Otsuka (Solid Snake, Naked Snake, Solidus Snake, Venom Snake in Metal Gear series)
• Louis XV: Hochu Otsuka (Xigbar in Kingdom Hearts)
• Jadame Jarjayes: Sumi Shimamoto (Yukiko Kudo in Detective Conan)
• Madame Noailles: Fumi Hirano (Lum in Urusei Yatsura (1981))
• Robespierre: Kensho Ono (Akutagawa in Bungo Stray Dogs)
• Rosalie: Saori Hayami (Yor in Spy x Family)

The Rose of Versailles is a highly influential manga that ran from 1972 to 1973. It is a historical drama set both before and during the French Revolution. Oscar is one of the main protagonists, alongside Marie Antoinette. MAPPA first announced that it would adapt the series as an anime movie back in September 2022.

The Rose of Versailles will air in Japan on January 31, 2025.

The official Twitter for the The Rose of Versailles movie has shown off the first key visual for the film’s collaboration with Sanrio mascots. Goods of these Sanrio characters will appear some time in the future.

All of the Sanrio mascots look like they’re cosplaying the The Rose of Versailles characters. They even have the hair and extra sparkly eyes. The pair-ups are:

• Dear Daniel: Andre
• Hello Kitty: Oscar
• My Melody: Marie Antoinette
• Pochacco: Fersen

Another key visual shows the mascots looking like plush dolls, complete with motifs and symbols that often appear in the The Rose of Versailles series. As mentioned earlier, goods of these mascots will appear in the future. More details will come soon.

News of an anime movie adaptation of The Rose of Versailles came out in September 2022.  MAPPA of Yuri!!! On Ice and Jujutsu Kaisen fame is the studio handling it. The manga is a highly influential work, achieving great financial and social success since it started serialization in 1972. As for the story, it is a historical drama focusing on the years preceding and during the French Revolution. Aside from the anime movie, there have been multiple adaptations over the years. This includes anime series and multiple stage musicals.

The The Rose of Versailles anime movie will air in Japan in early Spring 2025.

Classic shoujo manga series The Rose of Versailles is getting an anime movie adaptation. The movie was announced as part of the series' 50th-anniversary celebration, with comments from the series' original creator Riyoko Ikeda. Alongside the announcement, an official website as well as a new teaser trailer and key illustration also appeared. The film is currently in development. [Thanks, ryokutya!]

The Rose of Versailles began as a manga series that appeared in Shueisha's shoujo manga magazine Margaret in 1972. The series revolves around Marie Antoinette and the fictional Oscar François de Jarjayes. The manga ran until 1973, after which TMS Entertainment picked it up for an anime adaptation in 1979. Since then, the series has appeared in many other forms, including numerous spin-offs and sequels, a live-action drama series, live-action film adaptation, and stage plays.

The new teaser art for the movie shows the two main protagonists side-by-side. The caption reads "The lived, rashly, beautifully--" with Oscar holding a red rose, while Marie Antoinette holds a white rose. Furthermore, the teaser trailer shows several s and artwork from the original manga, before centering on the aforementioned key illustration. In a message to fans, creator Riyoko Ikeda mentioned that fans had been asking for a new anime adaptation for some time. Despite this, Ikeda also expressed surprise and joy that fans' wishes came true.
