The reports of the Nintendo Switch’s death are greatly exaggerated. 2024 brought even more great games to the platform, be them excellent remasters or truly fresh ideas. But which won Siliconera’s Switch Game of the Year 2024?

These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. Multiplatform games are considered on the platform for which they received the most staff . For more of the year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2024 archive.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 1r1949

This remake of the GameCube classic showed a new generation of players just how good the Paper Mario series was — and could be again — when allowed to sport fun characterization and mechanical depth. It’s one of the best role-playing games of all time, lovingly restored to play just as we it. It certainly earned our 10/10 score.

Unicorn Overlord 42183w

A spiritual successor to Ogre Battle, Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord has a nuanced world, engaging combat and that signature Vanillaware art we know and (usually) love. The developer generally hasn’t done sequels, but we’d really love to see what it could do if it built atop this work! Still, even if that doesn’t happen, it’s nice to see a game like this again.

siliconera nintendo switch game of the year 2024 the legend of zelda echoes of wisdom

Winner: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom 2gw6n

A Zelda game starring Zelda herself — that is, one acknowledged by Nintendo — has been a long time coming for fans who have been clamoring for it for ages. It surely is its own thing, as Grezzo’s follow-up to the Link’s Awakening remake and not a sprawling 3D adventure, but it’s a great little toy box with tons of puzzles to solve and lots of pieces to try to solve them. Congratulations, Echoes of Wisdom!

Echoes of Wisdom placed in The Legend of Zelda series canon timeline

Nintendo has updated its The Legend of Zelda series history page by adding Echoes of Wisdom to the list. The webpage is also available in English. People can now check the position of Echoes of Wisdom in the Zelda series' canon timeline.

Echoes of Wisdom is located inside the overall series timeline that features most of the series titles, so its story is not separated like the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom continuity.

People can find Echoes of Wisdom inside the branch where the Hero of Time loses to Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time. The latest series title as of 2024 appears right after the 2015 3DS title Tri-Force Heroes. But as Tri-Force Heroes mostly tells another story with a different cast of characters in Hytopia, the Hyrule story in the new game continues straight off the 2013 entry A Link Between Worlds.

The decline of the Hyrule Kingdom will happen after the storyline in Echoes of Wisdom, and it will eventually lead to the stories featured in The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link, the series' first two entries on the NES in the late 1980s.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is readily available worldwide on Nintendo Switch.

Okay, stay with me. I promise I'm not trying to get a rise out of anyone. Like many people, I loved The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I pretty much lived in that game for weeks, and kept coming back to it whenever I just want to mess around. When Tears of the Kingdom released, the same thing happened. Yet when I think of the future for the series, I feel like those games probably shouldn't be the guiding light. No, I think the future of The Legend of Zelda is the latest Switch release Echoes of Wisdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

In a lot of ways, Echoes of Wisdom comes off like a top-down Legend of Zelda game that has been fully informed by the success of Breath of the Wild. Hyrule has always been an open world, but only occasionally a properly non-linear one. Echoes of Wisdom doesn't give you full freedom, but with the power of the Tri Rod and your imagination you have a lot of choice in how to tackle the game's challenges. That is a big part of what has made modern Zelda games feel so fresh and exciting, and it's one element that needs to stay.

Echoes of Wisdom shows how well that system can be applied to a top-down format, even more than the excellent Link Between Worlds did. One thing struck me as I was playing through Echoes of Wisdom, however. First, I've missed the traditional dungeons that have been largely absent from the 3D games of late. While Breath of the Wild reclaimed the feeling of exploration and discovery of the original Legend of Zelda, it lost the other important part of the equation by cutting the usual dungeon designs. Echoes of Wisdom shows that the dungeons can be incorporated in a freeform design.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

One of the big features of Breath of the Wild was the size of the world. That feeling of leaving the Great Plateau and realizing it was just a fraction of the full world was unforgettable. Tears of the Kingdom provided an even larger map, but the impact was smaller. Upping the ante further in the next game likely wouldn't even make players blink. I know I certainly don't want a bigger world than what we saw in Tears of the Kingdom.

I think that Nintendo and the Zelda team did a great job of making sure the worlds in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom didn't feel too empty or devoid of purpose. With that said, Echoes of Wisdom has me wondering if a more compact world might be best. We don't have to go all the way back to the way things were. Echoes of Wisdom manages to make a world that feels big and enjoyable to explore, but also more guided. Without a need to seed a gigantic sprawling map with secrets, each one also feels more meaningful.

The Switch era of The Legend of Zelda has been incredible, but the new formula is as prone to stagnation as the old one. The series should always be moving forward, and there are lessons to be learned from Echoes of Wisdom. Rein in the size of the open world without sacrificing its organic, non-linear feel. Bring back those wonderful puzzle-packed dungeons, and let us continue to break them. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom threads that needle, and its ideas can do the same for future games.

Perhaps the most intriguing lore part about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is its place in the convoluted, overarching Zelda timeline. Is it related to the recent Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom games? Is it a sequel to Link’s Awakening? What about A Link to the Past and its Hyrule? Here are my thoughts. Note: full spoilers ahead.

Does The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Connect to BOTW and TOTK? 6z1146

As mentioned, I am going to be giving full spoilers ahead for all Zelda games, including Echoes of Wisdom. If you haven’t played this latest title to completion, turn away now. With that said, before we can get into where this game falls in the official timeline, it is worth talking about two of the latest games: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Echoes of Wisdom seems to connect to both of these games, as seen in several areas. For one, there is the Ancient Orb scenario. These orbs highly remind me of the Guardians and their technology, which is seen in both of these games. Plus, there are enemies that resemble their BOTW counterparts like the Lynels. In addition, the powers this particular Zelda has reminds me of the powers we see in this timeline version. That said, I don’t for a moment think this is the same Zelda protagonist from those games.

Where Does Echoes of Wisdom Fall in the Timeline? 5b1d6j

While the connections to Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are certainly there, where does Echoes of Wisdom fall in The Legend of Zelda timeline? Until we get official word, this is my personal opinion on the matter. I do believe this game is in the Fallen Hero branch of the timeline, but I, specifically, think the game is after every game there.

There are absolutely similarities to that particular branch, such as Ganon’s brief appearance. The world map is similar enough in of placement, though there are some changes. But the biggest clue of them all is the appearance of both Zora tribes. The only other game to experience this is Oracle of Ages, which is in that branch of the timeline.

If I had to guess, though, it is a bit more complicated than that. It has long been the thought that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are the culmination of bringing together all three branches. With the similarities this game has to those titles, I actually believe Echoes of Wisdom is the furthest in the Fallen Hero branch and coming up closer to BOTW and TOTK. One of the main proponents behind this placement is how the world map is similar to games like A Link to the Past but it has some BOTW influences like the Faron Wetlands in the southeastern corner. For now, though, we will have to wait and see.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is available right now exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Map Size Bigger Than Link’s Awakening

In the third part of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Nintendo interview series, Eiji Aonuma and Satoshi Terada explained exactly how much bigger the size of its map is than the remake of Link’s Awakening on the Switch. While it started out as four times larger, it turned to eight times bigger.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom map size came up when discussing how Hyrule looked, and that’s when both Nintendo’s Aonuma and Grezzo’s Terada explained how much bigger it is than Link’s Awakening. Aonuma first mentioned the initial concept involved the game’s world being “four times the size.” Terada explained, “However, we packed in so many things we wanted to do to create this "Legend of Zelda-like" feeling, and the map ended up eight times the size of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.”

Aonuma also elaborated on the size of the map in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom in another response. He touched on how it may be larger than expected, it still feels like other top-down entries. He said, “However, although the map has become much larger, the feeling of a top-down The Legend of Zelda game, where you can easily enjoy gameplay in a compact world, is still there, so it isn’t intimidating to explore. So you'll be able to play with a slightly different feeling compared to the vast worlds of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”

Tomomi Sano also compared The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom to Link’s Awakening, touching on the range. She noted, “…The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was set on a single island, but in this game, you get to explore a variety of different places in Hyrule. There are Gerudo, Gorons, and Deku Scrubs, who we haven't seen for a while. As many may know, the world of Hyrule is home to many different cultural regions, and the diverse graphics for each of their regions that Grezzo has crafted with love are really something to see.”

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

Review: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Is Innovative

It isn’t that we haven’t seen Zelda in an active role in The Legend of Zelda series or games before. She’s an accomplished fighter in the Hyrule Warriors titles. The iteration of her in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is a researcher and scholar who explores the world. She’s strong in and out of disguise in Ocarina of Time. She’s a fearless leader in The Wind Waker. But she’s never the primary star of the show. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom gives her that opportunity, and it’s an incredibly strong game with a delightful story, plenty of solutions to problems, and makes it feel like handling every situation is like solving a puzzle.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom starts by throwing us off a bit. We know that this is the “Zelda” game. However, it starts with Link going to rescue the captured princess. Things go awry. While the young man saves her, he ends up captured in her place. She returns home with new insight into the rifts. However, circumstances lead to her becoming a fugitive. Fortunately, she also has a new ally in the form of Tri, a being who gives her the ability to enter the Still World within rifts to fix them make echoes of certain items and enemies with the Tri Rod to fight foes and solve puzzles. It is now up to her to save Link and the kingdom.

While the opening of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is fairly linear, sending you through a tutorial and setup, it quickly opens up. So much so, that it feels like an open-world adventure along the lines of Breath of the Wild with a Link’s Awakening art direction. It is incredibly easy, early on, to acquire combinations of echoes that will help you explore essentially the whole map. There are certain monster echoes I acquired in the first three hours that I was still using frequently through the endgame. Additional major rifts open up as the campaign progresses and you complete the dungeons within past ones, with players able to choose the order in which opened ones are tackled. Likewise, you can choose which Swordfighter form upgrades you upgrade. (Someone could opt to skip them, for a greater challenge.) Sidequests continue to appear as the story advances, meaning you can find extra experiences and rewards as you proceed.

Given Zelda is known for “wisdom,” the bulk of the game revolves around the usage of echoes. This makes The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom feel more like a puzzle adventure or real-time strategy game at times, even though you can switch to Swordfighter form when you have the energy to for traditional action-RPG moments. There are often multiple solutions to problems posed by campaign quests or side missions. For example, I ended up turning to a trusty “old bed staircase” for many platforming problems. Reach new heights and occasionally take a nap in the sky to restore health!

As for fighting, it can become about picking the right echo for the current situation. You may be facing opponents who are in the air, and thus difficult to reach with Swordfighter form or otherwise. Summoning airborne enemy echoes takes care of that issue. There are some foes who are very fast and constantly move around. Picking equally swift or evasive echoes is necessary. Electricity can be more dangerous in rain, and water can prevent fire enemies from being of any use. As Tri levels up, you gain access to new echo abilities, can summon more, or may find some cost less than the originally did. So you need to work within the confines of your ability and the situation at any moment.

Of course, this does bring me to a downside. In fact, it might just be the only issue I have with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. You can’t “favorite” echoes. There are sorting options, to be clear. You can choose to go through them with a click of a trigger by cost, most recently learned, most used, and most recently used. These are fine, but I absolutely had about 10-20 echoes I called upon most frequently for my needs. Some of them didn’t come up enough to appear in most used or were too situational for most recently used. So it would be frustrating to have to pull up the notebook or go through all of the things I’d copied to my collection to get what I needed. This ends up being more of a ing annoyance and relates to specific situations. If it happens in one of the rifts you enter, odds are it is then in “most recently used” and will come up often in there.

Speaking of which, the dungeons in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom are expertly handled. While I feel this does feel like more of an adventure filled with puzzles, they still feel true to traditional dungeon design for the series. There can be different solutions in some situations, which is fun, since you can rely upon your favorite echoes to succeed. Each one fits the theme for the region well and implements novel ideas. I also appreciated how the bosses feel like they play well with Zelda’s new abilities. So we’re using all of the tricks from Tri to tackle these bigger baddies. It feels really satisfying and different from more traditional The Legend of Zelda games, while also somehow feeling the same.

I suppose this sort of applies to the whole nature of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. The sidequests are great fun, and there’s quite a bit of diversity. The solution isn’t going to always be “summon this echo you already found somewhere.” You might need to explore, go through some puzzles, or even find yourself searching for Tri’s friends to repair a smaller rift. They feel different, but fall in line with everything we expect from the series. It has the same fantastic graphical approach as The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, building on that to make it feel even more like a diorama made of unique materials. But everything is recognizable and ties together with past entries in the series.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom features all of the amazing hallmarks of the series, yet feels completely innovative, unique, and fresh. I absolutely loved the idea of summoning echoes to solve all of my problems, and the range of options available gives someone playing the freedom to do tackle situations in different ways. It feels open as well, with people able to approach the campaign and explore at their leisure. It’s a really special entry, and I’m so pleased Zelda’s turn at being the star and hero worked out so perfectly.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will launch on the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

The Siliconera staff has come together to determine the overall best traditional 2D The Legend of Zelda game of all time. From graphics to how well it holds up today to fond memories of playing it upon launch to combat to puzzles and even dungeons, it is hard to come up with the best.

But with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it is now time to figure out the best traditional 2D game in the series in our staff ’ opinions.

Siliconera Speaks Up: What’s the Best 2D Zelda Game? 644362

It's impossible for me to choose since the top-down Zelda games are my favorites. I adore both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, but the one I the most fondly is Link's Awakening and it's beautiful "Ballad of the Wind Fish" song. Special mention also goes to A Link Between Worlds and its experimental ideas with item rental and being able to complete dungeons in any order. -- Daniel

I mean, I think I'm going to have to say The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. It really captured my heart and attention the first time I played it. The island had such personality to it, and it was so much fun to explore. Plus, it really helped me get into the genre on my first handheld system. -- Jenni

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap will always stand out for me as my favorite “traditional” 2D-style Zelda game. The gorgeous cel-shaded art style still holds up so well today. While it was my first game in the series after Ocarina of Time, it still captures my heart with its novel dungeons, puzzles, and combat. The best part about it all is how it somehow made it all work on the severely limited controls of the GBA. -- Cody

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom releases exclusively for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom goods campaign in Lawson Japan

Nintendo has revealed that it is working with the convenience store chain Lawson to hold The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom goods campaign in Japan. The whole campaign has been ongoing since late August 2024, but a new wave will appear on September 24, 2024.

The new wave will bring a variety of clear files featuring Echoes of Wisdom versions of Zelda, Link, and Ganon. People who purchase three of the specified snack products will be able to get one of the files, and they are also allowed to choose a specific design while supplies last.

In addition, those who have the My Nintendo app installed on their smartphones can use the GPS check-in feature at any Lawson outlet by October 7, 2024, to receive an exclusive Echoes of Wisdom Zelda background image.

September 24, 2024 will also mark the new releases of The Legend of Zelda-themed shoulder bag and golden tumbler by Takarajima. Pre-orders for both items are also available online via the Japanese My Nintendo Store.

These new campaigns will help complement the existing pre-order campaigns for the actual Echoes of Wisdom game, which runs from August 26, 2024, until October 6, 2024. Pre-ordering the physical copy will reward a clear poster with the game's key art, while those who opt for cards can receive a set of stickers while stocks last. The latter also includes sweepstakes where 115 winners can get a set of three Zelda-themed puzzles and 15 people can win the Master Sword Proplica.

The Lawson goods collaboration campaigns are being held to mark the worldwide release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

New The Legend of Zelda Timeline Is at Nintendo Live 2024

Nintendo Live is being held in Sydney, Australia between August 31, 2024 and September 1, 2024, and a newly updated The Legend of Zelda timeline appeared going over the series’ in-game history. As pointed out by  Vooks, it changes the position of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. [Thanks, Vooks and Wario64!]

The change this time is that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are now in their own segregated area outside of the existing The Legend of Zelda games in this new timeline. They both appear in a section behind “The Hero is Triumphant” timeline in the lower half of the Nintendo infographic, but are cordoned off from the games in the Child Era and Adult Era timelines.

Here’s the tweet from Wario64 showing the new The Legend of Zelda History and timeline.

https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1829703963794624594

All of the other games remain in their existing spots in the timeline. So The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword remains the very first entry, which is followed by The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After Ocarina of Time, the timeline splits into “The Hero is Defeated” and “The Hero is Triumphant” branches. “The Hero is Triumphant” part of the timeline then further splits into the Child Era and Adult Era.

The next The Legend of Zelda game, which is Echoes of Wisdom, doesn’t appear on the board. This means following its September 2024 release, we will likely see the timeline updated again.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

See the Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Swordfighter Zelda

While most of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom early footage showed Zelda summoning up monsters and others to fight for her, a new trailer shows a Swordfighter form for her that seems to put her in Link’s costume and let her fight with a sword and shield. The new gameplay footage shows her taking advantage of these abilities in the Still World area in Hyrule.

The new The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer with Swordfighter Zelda actually primarily focuses on the Still World rifts Zelda can enter to rescue her father and Link. Going into these shows all of the items stolen away from Hyrule. She’ll go through the wreckage and summon Echoes to reach the ruins dungeons within them. When there, she’ll get the chance to sometimes grab a sword and become Swordfighter Zelda to fight against enemies herself for a limited time. That energy is restored by further exploring the Still World. However, she can also still summon Echoes to help against bosses and enemies within that area.

Here’s the full trailer, which shows how Zelda can use a sword in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom:

Impa Appears in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Nintendo recently updated the Japanese official website for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom to feature new characters that will be appearing including Impa, the King of Hyrule, and Zelda’s new ally, Tri.

In Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Impa is an elderly woman and Zelda’s caretaker, and she offers her unwavering to Zelda. Meanwhile, Impa’s brother Ruberi is a researcher investigating the rifts that are appearing all around Hyrule. Tri is Zelda's new ally accompanying her in Echoes of Wisdom, a fairy that possesses the mysterious power to replicate things in the world.

As is usual in The Legend of Zelda games, the King of Hyrule is Zelda’s father. Other of the Hyrule Kingdom government include Sadali, a polite and reliable minister in the court, and General Ugi, a military man with a strong sense of justice. As shown in the reveal trailer, Link is the Hero of Hyrule who rescues Zelda from the evil Ganon. The official website indicates that there might be a connection between Ganon and the strange rifts appearing in Hyrule, but something seems amiss.

The latest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom showed various locations from the game, as well as Zelda being able to ride a horse to traverse Hyrule and equipping various different accessories and pieces of clothing.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024.

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Hyrule Trailer Has Horses

Nintendo shared a new The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer that makes Hyrule itself the star, though we also get to see Zelda again and how she’ll ride horses and fast travel around the kingdom. It’s entirely focused on new gameplay from the title.

The “Traversing Hyrule” The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer begins at the castle and town surrounding it at the central plateau, before moving on to other areas. In order, glimpses of Gerudo Desert, Jabul Waters, Eldin Volcano, and Faron Wetlands appear. We also get to see the different people who live in these places. They may offer sidequests for Zelda, which she may be able to help with by recreating echoes of enemies or items in front of them.

After that, the new The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer gets into travel options by showing off the fast travel waypoints and horses. Once Zelda reaches a waypoint, it will appear on the map and can be immediately teleported to at any time. For getting around to places, perhaps when you haven’t unlocked fast travel points, it will be possible to call a horse with a carrot echo. The horse can also jump over small ledges and attack an enemy by running into it.

Here’s the latest trailer:

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024. Pre-orders are open, with some stores already offering pre-order bonuses.

Nintendo revealed a new game in the Legend of Zelda series, titled The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and this game marks a significant shift by letting you play Princess Zelda. She will be the main protagonist for the first time, and people will get to play it on September 26, 2024.

Nintendo shared the announcement trailer below. It begins with an introduction that explains why Zelda would suddenly be the character you play as in the new The Legend of Zelda game. The actual Nintendo Direct also offered an extensive look at gameplay.

This new entry is a puzzle platformer that introduces an Echo ability for Zelda. This ability allows players to copy objects and enemies, adding a strategic element to the gameplay. This mechanic is designed to provide interesting ways to solve puzzles and engage in combat. The visual aesthetic of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is also reminiscent of the Link’s Awakening remake's signature art style.

In conjunction with the game’s launch, Nintendo will also release a special edition Switch Lite system. The Hyrule Edition will be available on the same day. It is the first gold Switch Lite model, and it features the Triforce on the back.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will be available on the Nintendo Switch starting September 26, 2024.
