The Final Fantasy XIV Mobile version is set to release in China in June 2025, offering a different take on the FFXIV experience. At the time of writing, Square Enix has yet to reveal when the global version of the MMORPG will release. [Thanks, GameSpark!]

An announcement video revealing the game’s release window appeared on the Chinese video site Bilibili on May 19, 2025. FFXIV Mobile will be an Android and iOS version of the popular MMORPG developed in collaboration with Tencent’s LightSpeed Studios, and Square Enix announced the new mobile adaptation on November 2024.

FFXIV Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida said of FFXIV Mobile that it will be a companion piece to FFXIV, aiming to recreate the original’s story and combat in a mobile format. On its original announcement, it was revealed that the game will include the content found on A Realm Reborn on launch, including the original nine jobs and five races found on the 2.0 release. As a reminder, a trailer for the game showcasing the mobile UI and the playable jobs appeared on December 2024.

Blue Protocol Next Installment Is Blue Protocol: Star Resonance

Bandai Namco’s Blue Protocol MMORPG launched in Japan on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC and was supposed to appear worldwide on consoles with the help of Amazon shut down in January 2025. Now the “next installment” known as Blue Protocol: Star Resonance previously confirmed for Asia by Tencent's Shanghai Bokura Technology is confirmed for a 2025 worldwide release via A Plus Japan. PR confirmed to Siliconera that Bandai Namco is not involved, beyond licensing the IP for the game.

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is set in the world of Regnas and will feature some ties to the setting and designs in the original game, but is an entirely new installment. The official announcement also still referred to it as an MMORPG. Players will still get to choose their characters’ classes and explore an anime-inspired world. The PC version will be found on both Epic Games Store and Steam.

While details are still a bit slim as to what the experience will be like and when we’ll be playing, other elements are confirmed and online. A social media and YouTube channel are live. There’s also an official website. Its Discord is available as well.

Bokura and A Plus Japan also released two initial screenshots, which you can see below:

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance will come to PCs and mobile devices in 2025. The original Blue Protocol appeared on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Adaptation Brings FFXIV to Phones

Back in August 2024, we saw Final Fantasy XIV Mobile appear on a list of China’s National Press and Publication istration approved games, and now Square Enix, Lightspeed Studios, and Tencent announced a mobile version of FFXIV. Playtests will appear in China first, followed by ones worldwide. It is already possible to pre- for this version at the official site.

In the initial announcement, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is described as an “adaptation” of FFXIV, with elements from the MMORPG retained. The announcement video confirmed that the Disciples of War that consist of the traditional jobs and Disciples of the Land and Hand roles will all be present. In addition to the typical adventuring and raids, minigames like the Gold Saucer’s chocobo racing and Triple Triad will appear. The announcement also confirmed Scions of the Seventh Dawn characters will be present as usual, with Tataru Taru and Thancred Waters both specifically being cited.

Here’s the announcement video for the new version of the MMORPG:

And here are the first screenshots of the game.

There’s no timeline for when this version of the game will appear either via a beta or full version. We do know Chinese playtests will be held first. Then, there will be the worldwide launch after that.

Final Fantasy XIV is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and FFXIV Mobile is in development for Android and Apple iOS devices.

FFXIV Art of players crafting together on the moon

As of August 2, 2024, China's National Press and Publication istration approved 15 new video games for import and publication. The report by Niko Partners, shared by Daniel “ZhugeEX” Ahmad, showed the list included Rainbow Six, Dynasty Warriors, Marvel Rivals, and a mobile game co-developed by Tencent and Square Enix based on Final Fantasy XIV. [Thanks, Niko Partners!]

This is the first official announcement of any kind that a mobile game or title based on Final Fantasy XIV was being developed. The eXputer forum Kurakasis shared a rumor in July 2024 stating a project is in the works. This is the first official confirmation that the game is both in development and co-developed by Tencent and Square Enix, following a 2018 agreement that the two companies would be working together in the future. When Ahmad shared the news on social media, the tweet specifically mentioned by Lightspeed Studios. The report does not list if the game is a spin-off or a full mobile version of the MMORPG that is playable on phones or tablets.

The other games being brought over, including the team-based multiplayer hero shooter Marvel Rivals and Paper Mario: The Origami King, are imports of products that are either out or are leaving open beta testing and entering full release. The Rainbow Six title, Dynasty Warriors 8 mobile adaptation, and the mobile Final Fantasy XIV game are the two entirely new titles.

Final Fantasy XIV and its newest expansion Dawntrail are available now on PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The FFXIV mobile game is apparently in development and headed to China.

Ahead of Changli’s debut as a playable character in Wuthering Waves, the game will run the Bountiful Crescendo event. During this event, you’ll be able to get double the rewards from Simulation and Forgery Challenges.

The Bountiful Crescendo event will run in Wuthering Waves from July 11 to July 18, 2024. In order to participate in it, you need to be Union Level 14 at the minimum. You can only take advantage of the double rewards three times per day, with the refresh happening at 4:00 AM server time. As a reminder, this is only for Simulation Challenges and Forgery Challenges. wuthering waves review

Wuthering Waves is a visual delight of a game, making full use of Unreal Engine. But even in Version 1.1, it's still got lots of growing to do before it can live up to its fun concepts.

At launch, many people complained about the confusing, jargon-filled first act. My problem with how Wuthering Waves starts has less to do with the number of proper nouns and game-specific terminology, and more to do with the lack of direction. In Fate/Grand Order, you know that you’re the last Master humanity has. Even though you aren’t qualified or trained to tackle on the Singularities, you have no choice but to do so. Genshin Impact starts with your chosen protagonist’s twin going missing after fighting a goddess. Then the Mondstadt arc introduces you to a fairly stereotypical plot about saving a town from a corrupt, dangerous dragon. They're simple stories, but there's nothing wrong with that if you want to pull in as many players as possible.

wuthering waves review version 1.0

In Wuthering Waves, we are the Rover, who awaken with no memories and the mysterious power to absorb Tacet Discords, or monsters. While you do visit the first city of Jinzhou to figure out some answers about yourself, the plot feels like it loses track of itself fairly quickly. The scavenger hunt Sanhua and Jinhsi make you go on felt so long and tedious, especially for a group of people I have no reason to trust or care for. Near the end of the launch patch, there's a war scene that would feel impactful if I cared about the characters or world. In an Avengers-like sequence, playable characters work together to defend Jinzhou. Yet it came across more like Suicide Squad. I just don't know these people enough to give much of a damn.

Kuro Games did have to rewrite the plot due to from the closed beta, though. So I’m willing to believe that this was a major issue in why the story isn’t very engaging. You’ll see throughout this review that those dratted rewrites are the likely cause for a lot of problems.

wuthering waves version 1.1 storytelling
Screenshot by Siliconera

The thing with F2P gacha game stories is that they need some time to hit their stride. This could be due to growing familiarity with the world (thus needing less exposition), or simply that the writers need several patches' worth of time to cook. Fate/Grand Order was boring until Camelot, for example. But the market for F2P gacha games is not the same as it was in 2016. In 2024, there is a veritable treasure trove of free gacha games to enjoy that there’s no need to sit through a poor story (if that's what you're looking for). Those who dislike gacha games have an even wider selection to choose from. Surely those people wouldn't be reading a review about a gacha game though, right? Gacha games need to hit that initial impression if they want a foothold in this over-saturated market, and Wuthering Waves is just not doing it for me on almost all counts.

I was hoping Version 1.1 would improve on the storytelling, but perhaps the rushed fixes delayed development. At the beginning, Abby asks Rover, "Hey, do you that dream you had?" and then summarizes it. This was news to me, despite the fact this scene takes place literally two seconds after a conversation with Chixia and Yangyang. When, pray tell, did I have this dream? This “tell, don’t show” method is incredibly lazy and it’s worse because the dream sounds legitimately cool. Why couldn’t we have seen it? “Show, don’t tell” is one of the most rudimentary rules of writing. It’s not a good sign that they’re relying on this form of storytelling so early in their game.

The translation for Wuthering Waves Version 1.1 is much better than 1.0. Version 1.0 was rife with obvious MTL, as well as multiple problems that showed a lack of quality assurance. For example, the same character would have their name be different in the exact same thing. Dashbon turned to Dashi Bang whenever he jumped away while Minghu turned to Minghe in a dialogue option. Commas and periods appeared outside of quotation marks, as well as other little grammatical errors like using the wrong "its." In 1.1, the characters’ dialogue feels more natural and approachable. There are still issues with the map and character information not using the same names for farming locations, as well as very awkward phrasing in the Items menu. But considering all the issues Kuro Games had to fix since launch, this is something it’ll hopefully iron out in time.

Something that genuinely makes the game enjoyable is the combat. I did not like it before 1.1 because I have a very low tolerance for a camera I don’t have complete control over. Even after turning off any option that could move the camera, it would sometimes pan on its own or lock onto the furthest enemy from my character. After Version 1.1, the game plays like a dream in battle. It’s more fun to wander around the game’s map and kill whatever I see than to progress the story or complete side quests. The fast-paced battle system with so many rotation and combination possibilities is super addicting. I will say that even with the improved camera, depending on the terrain, it can get a little wonky. Anywhere with elevation or hills or just too many bushes can be frustrating.

Another thing I do like is the visuals. Changli is the only character whose design I like, but everyone has such a beautiful character model. The Unreal Engine and the developers' skill when it comes to things like sculpting and shading make the game look fantastic. I'll note that for a while, there was an issue with my screen bugging out in Version 1.1 only when fighting the Mourning Aix. This was a consistent issue since the Version 1.1 patch launched until today, when it suddenly fixed itself. I'm assuming Kuro Games implemented a hotfix of some kind, which is very nice. Kuro Games is very responsive to and criticism, as we've seen in the past. And for the most part, it moves fast to get rid of the most annoying or gamebreaking bugs.

A trend I do worry about is in how Kuro Games (or, let's be real, Tencent) seems to prioritize a small yet loud subset of entitled male gamers. Frankly, the zipper in front of Scar's crotch was ugly. People made fun of it for a reason. But the zipper existed in his character design for years before the game even came out. Yet Kuro Games removed it, apparently at the behest of Chinese incels. This change was not a welcome one in the general community. Plenty of videos on Bilibili also mourn the loss (in both a legitimate and a joking way).

Sadly, I have no footage of pre-redesign Scar. Or at least, it doesn't pan down enough to show his pants. Screenshot by Siliconera.

There were a lot of things subpar about Wuthering Waves prior to launch and in the first patch. Many people filed pretty reasonable complaints. But incel players tend to be loud. The inexperience of the team shows here in that it's taking a lot of and implementing changes, but it's not always taking the time to think of the best way to do so. While the complaints about the story weren't all from the incels back during the beta and technical tests, the characters changing from being kind of rude to nonstop gassing the Rover up does make them easy scapegoats for the rewrites. Perhaps the character designer felt hurt by the crude nickname the fandom gave Scar's zipper. But the sudden change to a beloved (for better or for worse) part of his design, again, makes it seem like pandering to those loud players.

My general view of Kuro Games and Tencent right now is they’re putting a Bandaid on a lot of open wounds in Wuthering Waves. These measures are fine in the short run, but I worry they’ll damage its reputation in the long run. A free 5-star as compensation for the disastrous launch was probably the only way to shut players up long enough for Kuro Games to code hotfixes. But a gacha game fandom is like a toxic boyfriend. Give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile.

It’s unfortunate because Kuro Games feels really sincere in wanting to provide a fun experience for its players. It didn’t have to give the Japanese Amazon gift cards after the Verdant Summit fiasco. But it did. It didn’t need to give everyone so many rewards for something out of the developers’ control (the rushed schedule). But it did. It seems to me that the decision to use UE4, as well as the tight development cycle it's in as a result of Wuthering Waves being a F2P gacha game, are causing a lot of issues. Despite my general misgivings and dissatisfaction towards Wuthering Waves, I sincerely hope them the best.

wuthering waves review

Anywhere with elevation or hills or just too many bushes can be frustrating.

wuthering waves review changli
Screenshot by Siliconera

While Kuro Games has developed and released Punishing Gray Raven in the past, Wuthering Waves is its first “independently developed and globally published game.” This may explain the existence of several pressing issues, such as audio bugs and translation errors. Here is a list of some of the major changes that will occur in the future:

  1. Echo Development
In Version 1.1, you will need less Shell Credits to develop your Echo. The cutscene when you collect your reward from Tacet Field will no longer be in the game, and the yield of Echoes and Echo development materials will increase. There will also be a Waveplates storage system in future updates.
  2. Reward system error when recycling developed Echoes
Kuro Games fixed an issue on May 29, 2024 in which Shell Credits players get after recycling a developed Echo was wrong. Kuro Games then removed the extra Shell Credits from players who got them, as well as issued compensation. However, Kuro Games did not inform the playerbase of this change and apologizes for this. It will compensate all players 1,000,000 Shell Credits. Players will also get 20 Crystal Solvents as an apology for the poor Echo system.
  3. 5-star weapon description
This is a reference to an issue on the Japanese side, in which the description for Jiyan’s signature weapon contains a critical error that changes its effect. Kuro Games will correct this translation, as well as any other languages that might have had a translation error in skill effect. All players will get a one-time compensation of 5 Forging Tides.
  4. Version events
Kuro Games is redeg the rules and reward schemes for the Overdash Club event. It will introduce a new event called Wuthering Exploration that offers new rewards and content to improve players’ experience. This event will run from June 13 to 27, 2024.

In response to about player experience during combat, Kuro Games will change and optimize several issues that have to do with controlling the character. PC versions of the game will disable Combat Camera Correction by default. The aggro ranges for certain bosses are different, and future updates will have a Disengagement Warning feature. It also expanded the anti-ghost touch area around buttons on mobile, with further optimizations in future updates. Custom keybinding will be something players can do in Union Level 2 and there will be a new player tutorial. Future versions will have controller mode on mobile devices.

Kuro Games addresses several other issues that have been in the game, such as audio bugs and performance issues. It will continue to optimize the player experience based on in Wuthering Waves in future updates. You can read everything in more detail via the official website.

wuthering waves yinlin

In order to allow players to access more content in Wuthering Waves Version 1.0, Kuro Games will alter the release schedule of content starting from June 6, 2024, with the Yinlin banner starting on that date as well. This should not affect the schedule for Jiyan's banner.

As of the time of writing, Jiyan’s banner should still end on June 13, 2024. Yinlin’s banner was probably supposed to come out on that date. However, Kuro Games has moved it to June 6, 2024. Her weapon banner will also appear on that date, along with her Companion Story and a limited-time event. For reference, Yinlin will be a 5-star Electro Rectifier character. This schedule change is only one of Kuro Games’s many announcements in regards to future optimization for Wuthering Waves.

Version 1.0 of Wuthering Waves will end on June 28, 2024. After maintenance, Version 1.1 “Thaw of Eons” will go live. This will include the new Mt. Firmament area, Resonators Jinhsi and Changli, and a new boss Jué. Kuro Games will also issue 10 Radiant Tides to Rovers as compensation for the unexpected change. Players will get their Radiant Tides in the in-game mail on June 3, 2024.

Wuthering Waves is readily available on the Windows PC and mobile devices. Yinlin’s banner will start on June 6, 2024 in Wuthering Waves, with Jiyan's banner lasting until June 13, 2024.

wuthering waves mistranslation e-mails

The ongoing controversy regarding Jiyan’s signature weapon on the Japanese side of Wuthering Waves continued, as Kuro Games accidentally leaked the emails of everyone who ed it for compensations. The description for the weapon is now accurate in the Japanese version of the game. [Thanks, HXG_Diluc!]

For context, the Japanese version of Wuthering Waves had a serious translation error when describing Jiyan’s signature weapon. The effect of Verdant Summit is that it increases Heavy Attack DMG Bonus every time the character uses their Intro Skill or Resonance Liberation. However, the Japanese version accidentally translated it as Intro Skill or Resonance Skill. To put it into simpler , a Resonance Liberation is an ultimate and a Resonance Skill is a skill. This is quite serious, as it completely changes the viability of this weapon for other characters, and players may have spent real money trying to get it for their Jiyan or Calcharo.

As a result of this, Kuro Games offered compensation and individual refunds for Japanese players who pulled for the signature weapon before May 29, 2024. You had to email Kuro Games to get the refund though, and this is when the current incident occurred. Instead of hitting BCC, Kuro Games hit Reply All, meaning that the emails of over 200 disgruntled Wuthering Waves players were leaked. In reading the email closely, the game will actually take away Lunites (the equivalent of an Intertwined Fate from Genshin Impact) if they refund money, which may leave some players with negative Lunites.

Tencent NetEase hit by China gaming regulations

Tencent and NetEase’s stocks are dropping at a massive rate due to China introducing new gaming regulations. Tencent’s stocks dropped around 16%, while NetEase’s fell 25%. [Thanks, Josh Ye!]

The new policies in question focus on online game management. These regulations mainly center on curbing spending in video games, specifically ones with a gacha element or a daily . Here are some of the new policies that China is setting for its video game companies:

  • Online games will no longer be able to offer rewards for daily s. They can no longer give rewards for when players first spend money or when they spend money several times in a row.
  • Games need to have a limit on how much players can spend to top up their digital wallets.
  • Developers cannot offer “probability-based lucky draw features” to minors.

Aside from these limitations, game publishers will need to store their servers within China. This likely has more to do with concerns over cybersecurity. A final new regulation will require online game approvals “to be processed by regulators within 60 days.”

This is not the first time that China has drafted up regulations in order to curb gaming addiction among younger players. In August 2021, it announced that minors in China will only be allowed to play online games for an hour on weekends and holidays.

In 2020, China also implemented a policy that required real name verification when ing for games. At the time, NetEase and Tencent had their own verification systems, and some games even needed players to undergo facial recognition.

People will have until January 22, 2024, to comment on these rules to the government.

NIKKE NieR: Automata Event Begins in September

Back in April 2023, Level Infinite and SHIFT UP teased a NIKKE NieR: Automata crossover. At the time, there was only a brief video that altered the logo to replace the “NI” in the game’s name with the ones used in the NieR: Automata logo. Now, the full event is confirmed. It will begin on September 1, 2023 and bring 2B, A2, and Pascal to the game.

A few details about the appearance of 2B, A2, and Pascal came up. All three will show up in some capacity. Yui Ishikawa, who is already in the game voicing major heroine Rapi, is also known for being 2B. (She also plays Mikasa in Attack on Titan and Philia in Sword Art Online.) Ishikawa also reprised her role in other crossovers, such as for SINoALICE and Soulcalibur VI. 2B will also feature a “new weapon design” for this crossover.

Teaser art already appeared showing the YoRHa androids and Machine Lifeform alongside the Nikkes. Pascal is in the back holding a Lunar Tear. In the middle are A2 and Rapi. In the front row, there’s Neon, 2B, and Anis.

This will mark the second major crossover for NIKKE in 2023. Earlier in the year, Chainsaw Man characters appeared in the game. We were able to recruit Himeno, Makima, and Power.
