Siliconera Speaks UP: Tales of JRPG Remaster We Want Next 6h4p6r

Tales of the Abyss is my usual answer for this question just because it's one of the best Tales games story-wise and it's a shame that it's not available on any modern platforms. However, I actually want to see some of the older 2D games remastered, like Rebirth or Destiny/Destiny 2. Those games never officially made it out of Japan, but I'm assuming if Bamco today remasters them, they'll make it available for the Western audience as well. While translation mods for them do exist, it would still be nice if people would be able to get the official versions of them if they so wished. -- Stephanie

Like Stephanie, I want to see Tales of Destiny again! I loved that game, and it was my entry into the series. Imagine if, somehow, It's near impossible for more modern audiences to play it, and the art direction means it should still hold up well! And since there is that PS2 Director's Cut with content never seen outside Japan, it'd feel fresh for anyone who picked it up! -- Jenni

I will never stop asking for a Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 remaster. I got a PS3 quite late into its life cycle used and it tragically broke soon after I purchased the original Tales of Xillia. As such, I never got to play these two games I looked so forward to. The dual protagonist system and storylines seem to indicate these two titles could be some of my favorites in the Tales of series right up there with Tales of Berseria, but I still don’t know to this day. I’m hoping we get a Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 dual remaster package after Graces f so I can finally see what they’re all about. -- Cody

Tales of Graces f Remastered is available right now for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

During the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase in August 2024, Bandai Namco announced that a remaster of Tales of Graces f Remastered will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on January 17, 2025. The game features enhanced visuals from the original Wii game and the updated PS3 release, alongside some newly added quality of life features.

"I also wanted to portray through Asbel’s storyline is when you were little you don’t care about a path or what people think about you. After you grow up you have to always think about social guidelines and expectations."

"Every title has a piece of me inside of it, of course. Asbel from Tales of Graces f reflects my feelings the most because he went through so many trials," Hideo Baba, producer of the Tales of series, said to Siliconera.

"Baba-san, you’ve talked about making protagonists people can emphasize with. Which Tales protagonist do you identify with the most," I asked. Baba replied with a detailed answer.

"In Graces f players can experience the protagonist’s childhood and when see him when he grows up. Every boy has an energetic spirit, an ‘I can do it’ attitude, but after maturing into an adult people have a chance to reconsider their views on life. Asbel, after growing up, considered what was important to him like family and the people he cares for.

After growing up Asbel needs to work within the environment because he needs to take over the Lord title from his father, but at the same time he dreams of becoming a knight. He feels frustrated about the choice. Everyone has this kind of situation and I want to portray that people need to decide what to hold dear to them and protect. I want to express how important it is to choose your own path and chase your dreams.

I also wanted to portray through Asbel’s storyline is when you were little you don’t care about a path or what people think about you. After you grow up you have to always think about social guidelines and expectations, which is something people may feel frustrated with. That’s what I wanted to show through Asbel’s point of view in Graces f."

Do you feel the same way about Asbel? Which Tales protagonist do you identify with the most?

When we spoke with Tales producer Hideo Baba he stressed the importance of having memorable characters in his games. "When we are developing titles, I first prepare a rough world setting and the basic storyline. Then the team works together to add details to the plot and atmosphere. The most important thing is the Tales series is part of the JRPG genre so I want to create characters players can emphasize with and they will want to follow as the story continues," Baba said to Siliconera.

I told Baba-san that I think fans in the West like Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia since he's more developed as a character. He knows who he is rather than searching for himself like the young "gung ho" JRPG hero archetype.

"There is a possibility to have another Yuri-style character again, but I think it’s important to listen to the fan’s voices," Baba responded. "The development team is always creating new worlds and characters, so it’s possible to see different kinds of leading characters."

Ludger, the protagonist in Tales of Xillia 2, is totally different kind of Tales protagonist. Baba and the Tales of team wanted to make a lead character that makes players feel like a hero. Instead of emphasizing with Ludger, players make decisions that change how the story unfolds. In comparison, Baba said, "Jude [from Tales of Xillia] is the same kind of leading character as seen in the previous Tales games." I asked Baba-san to tell us more about how returning characters like Alvin and Leia grew in Tales of Xillia 2.

"If we talk a lot about what happened between Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2 it might be a big spoiler for everyone," Baba laughed. "Xillia’s theme is 'unwavering convictions' and at the end of the game they found their own way. I changed their facial expressions and costumes for characters like Alvin and Leia to explain how they’ve grown after one year."

GSC say that Yuri (Tales of Vesperia) and Asbel (Tales of Graces) were the two most popular characters as indicated by a recent poll.

Meanwhile, Jude and Milla from Tales of Xillia will be the most difficult to create from a manufacturing standpoint, with the colouring work on Milla in particular posing a challenge.

The Nendoroid Petite: Tales figures will be up for pre-order on July 18th.

Hideo Baba is back for another round of ask the Tales producer and one fan asked Baba what his favorite battle system is. Baba answered, "It's actually the 'style shift linear motion' battle system from Tales of Graces f that's being released overseas this year." Baba describes it as "exhilarating" and "enjoyable no matter how many times you play."

His favorite soundtrack? Tales of Xillia takes that honor. What's your favorite Tales battle system (it's OK to say Symphonia!) and Tales score?

Tales series producer, Hideo Baba, is back with another community interview where he fields questions from western Tales fans. He also takes the opportunity to show off some Tales merchandise, like a Tales of Xillia pillow. You can watch the clip above, but we’ve transcribed some of Baba’s more interesting quotes below:

On how Namco could handle Tales differently in the west:

“This is a very difficult problem. We are proud of making the Tales of series a distinctly Japanese RPG. But, for it to be accepted overseas requires all kinds of promotions and things from all angles. We consider this an important issue which we continue to think deeply about.”

On localization and the gap between Japanese and overseas releases:

“Although this isn’t what makes it difficult, Japan is the biggest market for the Tales of series. You all know this already. We do want to have people all over the world play. As an RPG, there’s a lot of text. To localize everything at the same time takes a lot of time, cost, and even work on development. So we can’t help but launch in Japan first, but we’re always looking for ways to make the process more efficient and bring the launch dates closer together.”

Tales of series producer Hideo Baba answered for fan questions from Europe. This time he discussed the process of making a new Tales title and shows off a pack of Mabo Curry on his desk.

"Our team is always doing our best to improve the Tales of series," Baba responded to a fan asking if we would see more Tales titles for current hardware. "In that sense, what hardware we use is a very important issue to us. For now, we are looking at making better Tales of games with existing hardware. Of course, when the new generation of consoles appears, we will develop for those as well." The Tales series is multiplatform with titles on PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, 3DS, PSP, and most recently PlayStation Vita.

Baba also said not to expect created Tales heroes or heroines. "Changing the characters' physical appearances would affect our design of the heroes and heroines. Given the nature of the Tales of series we don't think we will see that sort of 'character creation' feature in the future." Decorating characters with "cute accessories" and dressing characters in crossover costumes is OK, though!

Speaking with Insert Credit, Tales series producer, Hideo Baba, discusses the series’ Japanese and overseas fans. Baba says that the primary audience for Tales in Japan is teenagers and people in their early 20s. This, he emphasizes, is the audience that the developers tend to focus on, as opposed to taking up a more global mindset.

“The Tales series has been developed with Japanese players in mind, so achieving success in Japan is a major goal for us,” says Baba. “But when the development schedule makes it possible, we do like to create localized versions for some titles in the hopes that players outside of Japan will hear about the series and get to like it.”

Baba then goes on to touch upon the subject of young protagonists in Japanese RPGs. “It is true that the number of teenage JRPG players is higher in Japan than elsewhere, but I wouldn’t say that teenagers are the main audience overall,” he shares. “We think of people in their late teens and early twenties as being the main audience for JRPGs.”

He elaborates: “As for the issue of young protagonists in JRPGs, this is just my personal opinion, but characters in Japanese anime have traditionally been relatively young, so having grown up watching this kind of anime, I think we Japanese don’t feel that having young protagonists in JRPGs is particularly unusual.”

Does this make it difficult for the Tales studio to create games with a global appeal? Perhaps, but Baba says that he isn’t too worried about what foreign fans think of the games.

“If we worried too much about what foreign players might think when we were developing them, we wouldn’t be able to take full advantage of our strengths as game creators,” Baba believes. “That’s our first priority—to preserve what makes the Tales series so great. It’s up to the foreign players whether they like them or not.”
