g gen 2

The latest issue of Famitsu has an interview with Super Robot Wars series producer Takanobu Terada, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays chief director Yoshiki Miyagi, and Bandai Namco’s Shouhei Mogami and Kensuke Tsukanaka, where they talked about how each series has its similarities and differences, whether there might be a chance of a crossover, and more. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089!]

Here are the highlights:

  • Takanobu Terada, Super Robot Wars series producer: “It was a great decision to limit weapons to four only in the early G Gen games. We had it tough with Super Robot Wars, so even now I wish we’d done it back then.” (laughs)

  • Terada: “By my rules, the latest Gundam series have to have ed G Generation before I’ll add them to Super Robot Wars. I believe that new Gundam series should be prioritized there first.”

  • Terada: “The big difference between Super Robot Wars and G Generation is that we use sprites, while G Generation uses 3D models. Both types can create great animations, but it’s a matter of whether you need to mass-produce them.”

  • “Regarding the sheer amount of units, I’d say G Generation has it tougher.”

  • Yoshiki Miyagi, G Generation Cross Rays chief director: “The big difference between the two series is between whether your units fight as a group or not.”

  • Terada: “I have thought about making a Super Robot Wars game with only Gundam series, but if we add in the Development System, then it’d just be G Generation. (laughs)”

  • Kensuke Tsukanaka, Bandai Namco producer: “On the other hand, it would be hard to set up a Development System for Super Robots.

  • Terada: “There may be some people who would want to cross Mazinger and Gundam to make ‘Mazingundam’. But if you’re going to cross the two series, there’s no point unless you take it that far.”

  • Shouhei Mogami, Super Robot Wars producer: “If we were to do that, we’d probably be told to increase the amount of units from each series. Although we’ve heard from people that they want G Generation original units to the Super Robot Wars series.”

srwt cover

  • Terada: “We’ll be working hard towards the Super Robot Wars series’ 30th anniversary in 2021.”

  • Mogami: “Around the time of Super Robot Wars T’s release, Super Robot Wars V and X were decided for the Switch, as there were many requests, and the platform is attractive to put the series on. Additionally, it was also because those two games did well overseas.”

  • Mogami: “Console SRW games take 1-2 years to develop no matter what.”

  • Miyagi: “When developing the PlayStation version of G Generation, we thought about making the game an action game, but because of memory issues, we went with battle animations after referencing the Super Robot Wars series.”

SD Gundam G Generation Genesis Cross Rays releases for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Japan on November 28, 2019. Super Robot Wars T is available on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

expansion pack 1

Today, Bandai Namco announced that Super Robot Wars T is getting an ‘Expansion Pack’ DLC on June 27, 2019 that adds 20 new stages that take place post-main plot. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Check out the details below:

Prologue

It has been a few months since the war that shook the solar system. While the prospect of another golden age fills the world with hope, in the shadows another great evil begins to stir…

The Expansion Pack is a new story that adds 20 new stages including route splits (14 playable total in each playthrough). The Expansion Scenario is a challenging story playable by carrying over clear data from the main game. You carry over just about everything from the carried over save, except for SR points and total turn count.

In the Expansion Scenario, the Original Generation characters and mecha from Super Robot Wars V and Super Robot Wars X will appear and be playable.

expansion pack 2

After choosing ‘Expansion Pack’ on the title screen, and your carried over save data, you can choose the Custom Rank between Basic, Super, and Hyper, which are essentially difficulty options. This is changeable in the Options menu during Intermissions.

  • Basic Custom: The basic difficulty of the Expansion Scenario, with enemy difficulty changing between Hard and Normal like in the main game. This difficulty is appropriate for those people who are carrying over a save with only one playthrough.

  • Super Custom: While enemy difficulty changes between Hard and Normal, enemies are overall upgraded further, and enemy pilots upgraded as well. It’s a Custom Rank difficulty for those carrying over saves with more than one playthrough on them.

  • Hyper Custom: Same as Super Custom, but with even more upgraded enemies. By playing Hyper Custom alongside the Super Expert difficulty, you can experience the highest difficulty Super Robot Wars T has to offer.

expansion pack 3

After choosing your Custom Rank, you are brought to the Intermission screen, with your mecha, characters, funds, and Ta intact as of clearing the game. As usual, you can change equipped parts, upgrade the mecha, and more, and clicking ‘Next Chapter’ will bring you into the Expansion Scenario.

Here are some screenshots of the Expansion Scenario:

Bandai Namco has revealed details on a recent update for Super Robot Wars T which adds a new difficulty aimed at players who have beaten Expert Mode, as well as update some skills and customization options to match the new difficulty. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Here are the details below:

Super Expert Mode

A new high-level difficulty option aimed at players who have already beaten Expert Mode. The difficulty of stages is always set to Hard, enemies will be even further upgraded than in Expert Mode, and you can only get the SR points in stages if you fulfill the conditions without failing and retrying the stage. Enemies with Ace Bonuses and Custom Bonuses will appear even starting from the early stages.

Upgraded Customization Parameters

Fortunately, to match with the new difficulty, the update adds a few new things for players to try out as well. Ally units who earn 300 kills will be elevated from Great Ace to the new Super Ace tier. Super Aces start maps with +10 Morale and earn 1.3x funds when shooting down enemies.

Additionally, certain skills are getting EX versions that are only gained by giving pilots that same skill when they have already learned the max level version previously. Special skills that were only learnable once previously are now treated as Lv 1.

Here’s the list below:

  • Attacker EX: Damage boosted by 1.3x when at 130 Morale or above.
  • Dash EX: Unit movement increased +2.
  • SP Recovery EX: 20 SP recovered at start of Player Phase.
  • ExC Bonus EX: Extra Count +3 at start of map/deployment.
  • Fighter’s Spirit EX: Increases Morale when deployed +20.
  • Break Morale Limit EX: Morale upper limit +30.
  • Save E EX: EN weapons cost 70% of regular EN to use.
  • Save B EX: 2x regular amount of ammo for ammo-based weapons.
  • Instinct EX: Final accuracy and evasion increased by +25% when at 130 Morale or above.
  • Guard EX: Reduces damage taken by 30% when at 130 Morale or above.
  • Lucky Star EX: Casts ‘Fortune’ Spirit upon first deployment, recasts ‘Fortune’ Spirit on the pilot at the start of every Player Phase, and adds 3000 Funds to every enemy kill.

Apart from the skills, the Pilot Level cap has been increased from Lv99 –> Lv200, Pilot Stats cap has been increased from 400 –> 999, and Unit Upgrade rank caps have been increased from 10 (15 on 3rd playthrough and after) to 20.

Super Robot Wars T is available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

Last week in Japan was a bit of a bittersweet, week as it saw the release of big titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Super Robot Wars T, and Atelier Lulua, but it was also the final week of the sales column provided by Media Create. The Japanese sales tracker Media shared the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of March 18 to March 24, 2019.

The top-selling #1 title of the week goes to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with 157,548 units sold on PS4 for an excellent debut. While it may not rank as high as FromSoftware’s Dark Souls games in opening sales, it pulled similar numbers to Bloodborne when it debuted as a new IP in Japan back in 2015. Check out how they compare below:

  • (2011) Dark Souls  - 279,567 [PS3]
  • (2014) Dark Souls II261,147 [PS3-255,197|X360-5,950]
  • (2015) Bloodborne – 152,567 [PS4]
  • (2016) Dark Souls III210,141 [PS4]
  • (2018) Dark Souls: Remastered71,730 [PS4]
  • (2019) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – 157,548 [PS4]

Next up, we have Super Robot Wars T at #2 with 88,093 units sold on PS4 and at #3 with 44,051 units sold on Switch to combine for a total of 132,144 units. Here’s how it compares to the previous couple entries:

  • (2017) Super Robot Wars V – 183,887 [PS4-100,154|PSV-83,733]
  • (2018) Super Robot Wars X 143,301 [PS4-89,259|PSV-54,042]
  • (2019) Super Robot Wars T - 132,144 [PS4-88,093|Switch-44,051]

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! debuted with the Switch version at #4 with 28,509 units sold and the PS4 version at #6 with 21,041 units sold, combining for 49,550 units between the two.

The latest Atelier game released with Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland for PlayStation 4 at #5 with 27,734 units sold and for Switch at #13 with 12,473 units sold in its debut for a total of 40,207 units sold between the two. It’s the first rise in opening sales for the main entry since Atelier Sophie in 2015, so it’ll be crucial for Gust and Koei Tecmo to ride the momentum going into the next Atelier game. You can check out some of the previous Atelier game debuts below:

  • (2013) Atelier Escha & Logy – 57,550 [PS3]
  • (2014) Atelier Shallie – 43,744 [PS3]

  • (2019) Atelier Lulua – 40,207 [PS4-27,734|Switch-12,473]

Lastly, we have Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet at #11 with 12,958 units sold on PS4 and at #20 with 7,075 units sold on Switch to combine for 20,033 units. The original Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 sold 44,723 units with Fortune on PS4 and 21,959 units with Venus on PS Vita to combine for 66,682 units.

In hardware sales, the PlayStation 4 system sold 27,061 units and an additional 7,834 units of PS4 Pros for a total of 34,895 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch sold 56,099 units as the best-selling console of the week, making up about 56.4% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s final figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,749,855 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

  • (2015) Atelier Sophie – 68,106 [PS4-39,759|PSV-25,805]

  • (2017) Atelier Lydie & Suelle – 21,129 [PS4]
  • (2019) Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists – 31,314 [PS4/PSV/Switch]
The top-20 chart of the week is as follows:

The week’s biggest release is undoubtly Dark Souls and Bloodborne maker From Software’s latest game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Actually, Sekiro will likely die more than twice in his quest, but he does have many tools to help cut down enemies, such as a prosthetic arm with different weapons that can be swapped (sadly, no Mega Buster).

Koei Tecmo is also bringing out a fourth game in the Arland sub-series of Atelier games with Atelier Lulua, which sees Rorona’s daughter travel the world in order to protect her mother’s atelier as well as unravel the mysteries of the Codex. Finally, the third new release is Super Robot Wars T, bringing good old fashioned hot blood to the table with newcoming series like Cowboy Bebop, and newly returning series like Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

As for rereleases, the most prominent title this week is Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy, a Switch/PS4 enhanced port with new jobs, voice acting, and more. Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Scarlet also releases on the Switch with a new girl to volleyball with. Steins;Gate: Divergencies Assort also ports every side game to the Switch, just a while after Steins;Gate Elite released for the system a few weeks ago.

As a reminder, Siliconera gets a small portion pocket change from your purchases from our Play-Asia links below. You can also save $3 by using the code “SILICON” by using the coupon button at the payment method selection screen.

For example, Ed’s ‘Hacking’ makes all allies gain +20 Accuracy for one turn, while Rain’s ‘Deeper than the Ocean’ command makes one chosen ally regain 40 SP.

er Commands require S-SP (er SP), which is shared between the whole army. It starts at 50% of the maximum amount, and your army regains 5 S-SP per Player Phase. You can only use each command once per turn.

For example, Double Advance shown above increases Simulator and Patrol Sub-Order slots. You can only choose one out of three choices for each Grade.

Here are the Grade effects for the first two tiers:

Grade: 1

  • Ta Advance: One slot added to Training Sub-Order.
  • Double Advance: One slot added to Simulator and Patrol Sub-Orders respectively.
  • Cost Advance: Funds Raising Sub-Order gets one extra slot.

Grade: 2

  • SP Boost: The amount of SP regained by pilots each turn increases from 5 to 8.
  • Repair Boost: Each turn, ally units regain 10% of HP and EN. This stacks with abilities of the same effect.
  • Force Boost: At the start of each turn, every ally pilot gains +2 Will.

Sub-Orders

srwt systems 9

srwt systems 10 srwt systems 11

A new Special Order Sub-Order has been added, and only one pilot can undergo the Special Order. Special Orders are unlocked by fulfilling certain conditions.

Here are some of the Special Orders:

  • Focused Training: Pilot earns 2,500 EXP.
  • Ace Raising: Pilot earns 10 to their score.
  • Melee Training: Pilot Melee stat increases by 10.
  • Ranged Training: Pilot Ranged stat increases by 10.

srwt systems 13 srwt systems 14

Every skill is now available to create with Ta from the beginning. By creating and expending Skill Programs, pilots can learn new skills.

Super Robot Wars T’s English-subbed 2nd trailer was ed to Bandai Namco Asia’s Facebook today. Furthermore, series producer Terada also recently answered questions at Taipei Game Show on what we can expect from the latest entry in this longstanding mecha franchise.

Check out the new trailer subbed below:

From the trailer, it seems that God Gundam will be using its Western name Burning Gundam in SRW T. The theme song for the game is also in English, and in a video message for Taipei Game Show, JAM Project revealed that they sang multiple versions of the song, in Japanese, Korean, English, and Chinese.

5 mins of GaiGaoGar gameplay footage:

Voice actor Nobuyuki Hiyama was present at Taipei Game Show’s Super Robot Wars T stage event, and he showed off GaoGaiGar’s moveset in around five minutes of gameplay total.

Developer interview:

srw t

After the stage event, series producer Takanobu Terada and Super Robot Wars T producer Shouhei Mogami sat down for an interview, where they talked about some of the finer details of the game. [Thanks, Bahamut!]:

  • As shown in the trailer, the skill tree aspect of teaching pilots new skills has been removed in SRW T.

  • There will be no combo attack for God/Burning Gundam’s ‘Sekiha Tenkyouken’ attack, but ‘Shuffle Doumei Ken’ has been included.

  • While the Arcadia is not as strong as Yamato, the ships in general have been balanced to be quite strong.

  • The reason why SRW V, X, and T have stories that conclude in one game is because of the series expansion into overseas markets. They didn’t want new players to not understand what was going on in the story.

  • With the unfortunate ing of Kincaid’s voice actor Kouji Tsujitani, Kincaid will be using lines from their voice library from previous games.

swordfish 3

  • Terada went into detail on how each series got included: Originally, Arcadia SSX was decided upon. Cowboy Bebop and Nadesico were decided upon after because it would work well with Arcadia SSX, and Terada says to look forward to the dynamic between Captain Harlock and Spike, considering their respective professions (bounty hunter vs pirate). Gun x Sword was brought in because overseas popularity.

  • Magic Knight Rayearth will follow the setting in the anime, where they are more willing to fight, rather than the manga setting.

  • Terada states that console Super Robot Wars games will continue to follow the traditional approach, while they will try out new ideas with mobile SRW games.

  • There are fewer hidden units and pilots in T, but that's because they wanted more players to use units like Bellvine and Shin Getter Dragon, who would have been designated as secrets usually. As another example, Nightingale was supposed to be a secret unit, but was made part of normal unit acquisition in SRW T considering its popularity in X. That said, there is one major hidden element that hasn't been revealed, which is completely new.

srw t 5

During the Super Robot Wars livestream earlier today where the second trailer was revealed, we got an extended introduction to the main ‘Original Generation’ characters for Super Robot Wars T.

Tokitou Saizou (CV: Takeshi Kusao)

srw t 1

The male Original Generation main character for SRW T. He’s designed by NishiEda and voiced by Takeshi Kusao. He’s a regular worker (salaryman) employed at the VTX Union’s Special Operations Third Division, and his design reflects this fact.

According to Kusao, Tokitou is a bit more tired-sounding compared to the usual hot-blooded young protagonist, as he’s a bit older than the usual SRW protagonist as well. At the same time, he’s got the laid-back attitude of an adult.

Sakurai Sagiri (CV: Umeka Shouji)

srw t 2

The head of the Special Operations Third Division, and Tokitou’s direct superior. She likes go at her own pace, and is a formidable pilot. Sakurai was designed by NishiEda as well, and is voiced by Umeka Shouji.

Ramie Amasaki (CV: Ai Kakuma)

srw t 3

The co-pilot of the Tiranado, and a new employee at VTX Union. She’s the heroine of the story.

Tiranado

srw t 4

Tiranado is a prototype unit created by megacorporation VTX Union. SRW series general producer Terada explained that when deg the unit, care was put into making it look like it was wearing a tie, signifying how the two protagonists are regular workers. Tiranado is followed by a large craft lead by Meryl (who shows up for a brief moment in the trailer), which provides the Tiranado with its armaments.

Finally, Terada explained that while the main character you choose will pilot the Tiranado, the other unpicked character will also appear in the story, but pilots the Gespenst instead.

srw t 5 During the Super Robot Wars livestream earlier today where the second trailer was revealed, we got an extended introduction to the main ‘Original Generation’ characters for Super Robot Wars T.   Tokitou Saizou (CV: Takeshi Kusao) srw t 1   The male Original Generation main character for SRW T. Sakurai Sagiri (CV: Umeka Shouji) srw t 2   The head of the Special Operations Third Division, and Tokitou’s direct superior. She likes go at her own pace, and is a formidable pilot. Sakurai was designed by NishiEda as well, and is voiced by Umeka Shouji.   Ramie Amasaki (CV: Ai Kakuma) srw t 3   The co-pilot of the Tiranado, and a new employee at VTX Union. She’s the heroine of the story.   Tiranado srw t 4   Tiranado is a prototype unit created by megacorporation VTX Union.
