fire emblem three houses sale

It isn’t often that first-party Nintendo games go on sale. At the moment, four relatively major titles are temporarily reduced at multiple retailers. People can now get Fire Emblem: Three Houses, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition for $20 off. This brings the price of each game down to $39.99. [Thanks, Wario64!]

Three retailers are participating in this sale. Here are the direct links to each title at each store. Note that places like Best Buy and Walmart aren’t participating. They are also all still full price at the eShop.

Of the three games, Super Mario Odyssey is the oldest. The platformer debuted in 2017 and gave people a chance to explore more open areas with Mario. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is technically the oldest, since the original game debuted on the Wii in 2010, but this version ended up showing up on the Switch worldwide in 2020.

Nintendo and the retailers didn’t note how long the sale will last on games like Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. The timing lines up with multiple Golden Week sales.

Super Mario Odyssey Pro Controller Bundle Walmart

A rather unexpected bundle has appeared at Walmart, and it seems to tie in with the whole Super Mario 35th anniversary celebration Nintendo has going on. A Super Mario Odyssey Pro Controller bundle has shown up on the store’s website. It is a pre-order for a $99.99 box that gives you a standard black Pro Controller and a digital copy of Super Mario Odyssey. [Thanks, Wario64!]

This ends up being quite the savings. Normally, a copy of Super Mario Odyssey ranges between $49.99 and $59.99, depending on where you’re buying it. (It’s almost always $59.99 for a digital copy from the eShop, though.) A Switch Pro Controller’s normal price is $69.99. That means you’re saving $29.99 if you end up getting this bundle with everything together.

Super Mario Odyssey was the first main, original Super Mario game released on the Nintendo Switch. Like Super Mario 64, it’s a 3D platformer with a more open-ended approach. It also introduced Cappy, an ally that allows Mario to take over different enemies’ bodies.

Super Mario Odyssey is immediately available for the Nintendo Switch, as is the standard Pro Controller. The Walmart product listing says that people should be shipping out to people by September 10, 2020 in North America.

mario odyssey 64 mod

The statute of spoiler limitations should be over by now, but I'll tread carefully: there is a connection between Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 64. I won't say what that connection is, but it's more literal than you'd expect from a usual Super Mario adventure. That connection seemed to spark some serious creativity in the rom modding community, in particular with a modder known as Kaze Emanuar. Kaze took a Super Mario 64 rom and somehow turned the game into Super Mario Odyssey. Since it's a rom hack instead of a fan game, Nintendo's lawyer ninjas might not assassinate it right away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAFxi6nuD80

The name of the mod is as straightforward as it gets: Super Mario Odyssey 64. Kaze released a trailer along with the official release build, and it looks pretty impressive. Not only are the levels from Super Mario Odyssey "demade" in the Super Mario 64 style, Kaze and his collaborator Biobak64 arranged the soundtrack with the Super Mario 64 instruments and even got Cappy to work.

This mod obviously can't be a full adaptation, but it does boast 80 moons. Kaze posted a trailer on their YouTube channel, which also includes links to a playthrough video, along with a link for the patch and a tool to apply it.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey recently got their 1.6.0 and 1.3.0 updates, respectively, and it’s been found that the updates snuck in some drastic load time improvements.

Several players noticed big improvements in various loading parts for both Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. GameXplain recently put together a demonstration to show some of the notable differences:

Teleporting from the Great Plateau to Kakariko Village previously took about 26.9 seconds in Ver. 1.5.0 while it’s been brought down to about 14.6 seconds in the Ver. 1.6.0. When testing a closer location with the Dako Tah shrine, Ver. 1.6.0 had a loading time of a little over 10 seconds while 1.5.0 took over 16 seconds. Entering the shrine itself took a little over 6 seconds in the new update, almost two seconds less than the 8 seconds it took in Ver. 1.5.0.

The following video shows a comparison of Super Mario Odyssey’s new 1.3.0 update and the previous one in Ver. 1.2.0. Starting up the game previously took about 33.5 seconds in Vers. 1.2.0 while it managed to cut down over ten seconds of loading in Vers. 1.3.0 at about 22.5 seconds. Flying from the Cascade Kingdom to New Donk City takes now takes less than 14 seconds in Vers. 1.3.0 while it previously took 18.2 seconds.

Entering the Crazy Cap Shop takes 1.5 seconds in Ver. 1.3.0 which is a little shorter than the previous 2.2 seconds in Ver. 1.2.0. Lastly, flying to the Sand Kingdom takes close to 11.4 seconds in Ver. 1.3.0 which is about three seconds less than the 14.3 seconds it took in Ver. 1.2.0.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are both available for the Nintendo Switch.

On April 25, 2019, the Super Mario Odyssey VR update is arriving that will allow people to use the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con04: VR Kit with the game. However, it turns out you don't need the VR goggles to enjoy the new experience being added to it. VR will be optional, just like it is with the VR-compatible Theater Mode being included in this update.

The news was announced via the Japanese Super Mario Odyssey Twitter . It shows the screen leading into the VR mode. It notes that it can be played without the Nintendo Labo VR goggles, but also says people who do have it and enable VR can enjoy 360°views.

In the Super Mario Odyssey VR experiences, players help Mario collect musical notes in the Cap, Luncheon, and Seaside Kingdoms. As they do, they get the ability to recruit various performers in each area for a band. When the whole band is brought together, players get to see a Metro Kingdom concert.

Super Mario Odyssey and Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit are available for the Nintendo Switch. The free Super Mario Odyssey VR update arrives on April 25, 2019.

One Piece World Seeker

Last week in Japan, we saw the debuts of several key titles including a couple open-world games in The Division 2 and One Piece: World Seeker, LoveR, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Music and Arts Clips, and Samurai Warriors 4 DX. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of March 11 to March 17, 2019.

The #1 spot of the week went to The Division 2 with 63,817 units sold on the PS4. The first game, The Division, opened with 80,703 units back in March 2016. Following at #2 is One Piece: World Seeker with 51,039 units sold on PS4. There hasn’t been too many new One Piece action games for comparison, but One Piece: Burning Blood sold 68,178 units (35,496 on PS4 and 32,682 on PS Vita) back in April 2016.

Last week’s best-seller Devil May Cry 5 charted at #3 in its second week with 33,149 units sold on PS4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was at #4 with 20,706 units sold on Switch and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe at #5 with 16,997 units sold on Switch.

Samurai Warriors 4 DX charted at #15 with 5,330 units sold on PS4 and at #17 with 4,704 units sold for Switch to combine for 10,034 units between the two. Lastly, Kenka Bancho Otome 2nd Rumble!! debuted at #18 with 4,014 units sold on PS Vita.

We also need to give a shout out to Judgment which wasn’t even in the top-50 the week prior but managed to get up to #9 as a result of Sega stopping its physical and digital sales following the arrest of Pierre Taki. The game has been topping the charts in Japan but we’ll get more into detail on that in a later report.

In hardware sales, the PlayStation 4 sold 25,015 units plus an additional 7,206 units from PS4 Pros to total 32,221 units sold in the week. The Nintendo Switch dropped by about 13k from the week before, but it sold 56,954 units to be the best-selling console of the week with about 59.4% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,693,756 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

Devil May Cry 5

Last week in Japan, it was Devil May Cry 5 week with the release of the anticipated action game by Capcom. Otherwise it was a pretty quiet week with the only other new entry being Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of March 4 to March 10, 2019.

The top-selling title of the week went to Devil May Cry 5 at #1 with 116,202 units sold for PS4. We don’t have the number of the entire series’ debuts for comparison, but the previous main-numbered entry in  Devil May Cry 4 sold 205,390 units on PS3 at launch in 2008. The 2013 title DmC Devil May Cry sold 110,429 units on PS3 in its debut.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate got the #2 spot for a second week in a row with 23,407 units sold for Switch. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe followed at #3 with 20,101 units, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 with 12,301 units, and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Let’s Go, Eevee! at #5 with 11,394 units sold for Switch. The next and only other new entry of the week followed at #6 with Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn selling 10,607 units on the Nintendo 3DS.

In hardware sales, the PlayStation 4 saw a nice Devil May Cry 5 bump with 25,154 units sold plus an additional 7,208 units from PS4 Pros for a total of 32,362 (19,857 units last week). The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the week with 69,766 units sold, making up for about 62.9% of all hardware sold. The Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,636,802 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

The Nintendo Switch sold 61,280 units to make up 70.4% of all hardware sales. Last week in Japan, things are starting to cool down in hardware and software sales but that didn’t stop the release of two big-hitters in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of January 7 to January 13, 2019.

After taking up the top spot for four weeks straight since launch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally been dethroned from the #1 which went to none other than New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 166,303 units sold for Switch in its debut. As for Smash, it charted at #2 with 62,580 units sold.

The next new title of the week, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition charted at #3 and #4 with the PS4 version selling much more with 41,510 units followed by the Switch version with 26,588 units sold in its debut. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition combined for a total of 68,098 units in its debut. A main Tales of game can easily clear the 200k~300k debut, but that’s about expected for the Tales of Vesperia remaster.

At #5 we have Dragon Quest Builders 2 for Switch with 19,565 units sold. The PS4 version sold 17,931 units in the week to chart at #7. And between them is Super Mario Party that appears to be dropping a bit after partying in the #2 spot for a couple weeks.

In hardware sales, there’s been a noticeable drop after the holiday spending from earlier this month, with the PS4 selling 12,012 units plus an additional 6,289 units of PS4 Pro consoles to combine for 18,301 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the week with 78,056 units sold to make up about  75.2% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,124,822 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.
