Hobby Japan announced on social media that it will once again sell its six Suikoden 1 and 2 character plush toys. Pre-orders opened in Japan ahead of a September 2025 return. AmiAmi also confirmed that, while limited, it will take pre-orders for each of them. They cost ￥3,300 (~$23) each. 

Each of these Suikoden dolls are about the standard size for these types of stuffed animals. They are 7 inches tall (18cm). Each one is a rendered in a chibi style designed to call to mind one of the leads from the series. They also arrived dressed in the outfits worn in the games, though these can’t be removed.

At the moment, AmiAmi does still ship worldwide, including to those of us in the US. A notice on its main page noted that it stopped offering surface mail () as a shipping option on April 9, 2025, as a result of tariffs inflicted by President Donald Trump. It’s important to keep an eye on storefronts now, due to the current trade war started by the president. As a result, stores such as Funstock and Good Smile Company announced measures like a pause in pre-orders or delayed shipments.

Unfortunately, not all of them are seeing the limelight as they deserve at this time. Honestly, I'm just happy to see Suikoden 1 and 2 getting remakes. Otherwise you'd have either emulate or drop a few hundred on a dodgy ebay listing. Though, if they do well I'd love to see remasters of Suikoden 3 or maybe Tactics, or even just something new for the series. -- Elliot

I hope Suikoden I & II remakes will pave the way for a Suikoden V remake, as it’s a criminally underrated JRPG that deserves way more attention. I would even go as far as to say that Suikoden V is my favourite entry from the franchise. If I can be greedy and request another, I want to see Yu-Gi-Oh! True Duel Monsters: Sealed Memories get the remaster treatment. The title was created when the original card game had no established rules. As you can imagine, the game went in a very bonkers direction with some bizarre story plots. The game will probably never receive a remaster, especially as it’s been left out of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection, but it feels like an important (although unspoken) part of the franchise’s history, like the dramatic crossroads meme. Now, thinking about it, Yu-Gi-Oh has a weird lore, right? -- Yasmine

It is time for Dance Dance Revolution to come back in the West. It would work so well with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons (similar to Just Dance), but with music that is more appealing to me. Plus, it’d be a great way for me to lose a little bit of weight. Besides DDR, I’d love to see a Yu-Gi-Oh Early Days Collection 2 with a heavy focus on the DS titles. My favorite Yu-Gi-Oh games, still to this day, are the trio of World Championship games from 2009-2011 since they largely focused on my favorite series — 5D’s — and had excellent singleplayer story modes. -- Cody

Good Smile Company has opened global pre-orders for its Nendoroid featuring Tir McDohl, the protagonist of the first Suikoden entry. After first teasing the project in August 2024, the company primed it for pre-orders on the same day Konami released the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster compilation game worldwide. People can place orders for the chibi figure on the company's Japanese international and North America-exclusive web stores at ¥6,800 / $54.99.

This Nendoroid will depict the son of Theo McDohl, whose first name is inputtable by the player, but he has also been known by the canonical name Tir McDohl. The set will come with a staff as the protagonist's weapon and three choices of facial expression parts. The expressions available will be mostly serious, with closed and open mouth variants, and the third one will show Tir smiling.

Good Smile Company will also offer a bonus round base with the logo for the remaster of Suikoden I: The Gate Rune War for orders made on its own web stores. The same Nendoroid is also alternatively available to order on other websites like AmiAmi, but those sites do not offer the aforementioned exclusive part.

The Suikoden series went from a collection of games that fans of JRPGs revered to ones that ended up being acknowledged for their unique nature and often excellence by everyone. Unfortunately, it’s also been far too long since Konami acknowledge the IP with a new entry or revival or an old one. 2025 marks the return of the first two installments with Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. While they might not be the biggest or most impressive remasters out there, they do a great job of restoring two deserving titles. 

In a way, it’s quite fitting that both of these JRPGs are in this Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster, as these two games are so closely linked. So much so that the hero of the first and many of the ing cast returns for the sequel. All of the mainline games fit into the same timeline, and the second game takes place three years after the first. So we can see the effect of political events and decisions.

Suikoden follows Tir McDohl, a young man who is the son of Scarlet Moon Empire general Teo McDohl. The game begins with him being introduced to Emperor Barbarossa Rugner and ing his service as his father departs on a mission. However, on his very first mission, Tir gets a glimpse at the despicable behavior of the empire and finds himself inheriting the one of the 27 True Runes. This makes him a target for the army and a fugitive. As he escapes, he falls in with the Liberation Army. This leads to him ing and building it up by recruiting the 108 Stars of Destiny.

Similarly, Suikoden 2 follows Riou. He and his friend Jowy are a part of the Highland Kingdom’s Unicorn Youth Brigade. A possible peace is broken when Highland’s Prince Luca Blight works with the group’s commander to slaughter all to push a war with the City-States of Jowston. Riou and Jowy are able to escape. Both also find themselves caught up in a growing war, with Riou going on to lead and recruit for a rebel force hoping to bring peace to the region while stopping Blight. 

Each of these games tends to follow a sort of pattern. At their hearts, both games in the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster collection are traditional, turn-based RPGs. Once you get to the point at which you become leader of an army and acquire a castle, you’ll be able to head out into the world to recruit people. These folks may have certain conditions you have to meet to get them to . In some cases, they might automatically as the story continues or not be ready to be part until either you hit a certain plot point or your castle expands after hitting a certain milestone. At other times, you may need to follow certain steps or achieve certain goals. I feel there will always come a point at which you sort of recognize that you’ve done everything you can do for the moment and need to return to the story, at which point you can get more people on your side.

Battles are fairly typical, turn-based affairs. You have a party of up to six, with three folks in front and three in back. (There are some anomaly characters that will take up two spots.) Weapons dictate proper placement, as they have certain ranges like short, medium, or long, and short-range ones must be in the front row. Magic is tied to Runes, with Rune shards being able to be tied to weapons and Orbs being set to people. As you use characters and perform magic different tiers of Rune abilities open up. There are also occasionally more strategic affairs, though those are infrequent and pop up at specific spots in the story. 

I will say that while there are some elements you’d expect in a HD remaster, there are some features oddly absent or that aren’t exactly as helpful as you’d expect in these Suikoden games. There are three difficulty options to select at the start, which is handy! You can also dash right away, and that is incredibly helpful. When you enter battles, you can tap a button to increase the speed of the fight or turn autobattle on and off without going through the menu. It also naturally looks quite crisp and nice, what with being in HD, and the new character portraits are beautiful without feeling out of place. The conversation log is one of my favorite new additions, as I absolutely get caught up in the recruiting efforts. This means if you did a lot of backtracking, you might forget where you were supposed to meet up next. What do I do? I check the log and see where someone told me to go. I’m set. 

However, there are areas in which I feel like Konami could have done more. There’s an autosave now, but it is incredibly infrequent. For example, it doesn’t kick in when you enter a town/dungeon, which would have been smart! Instead, it will happen at odd or notable times. For those aware of the series, it isn’t helpful for the Castle of Toran autosave to happen on the screen right when you enter the room where the save point before the boss is! An adjustment to modernize the save system and not tie it to inns would have been welcome as well. So would some controller rebinding options. It’s great we can dash right away! I do wish there’d been a toggle option for that in the options, so you don’t have to constantly hold the button down. 

But the main goals here are that Suikoden 1 and 2 are back again, and this HD Remaster release revives both games in a comfortable way. It makes sure they look pretty and run well. I was especially shocked at how good both games looked, as the spritework really stands out without it feeling like some SNES games where you can see how the CRT effect benefited its appearance. I especially loved moments when there would be layered elements, like fog in a dungeon or clouds in a sky, because it’s executed so well. The new character portraits, which I mentioned earlier, are also quite a boon. It helps add more personality to these ing cast who could sometimes be quite personable even if they aren’t major players.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster might not have earth-shattering additions, but the graphical updates and quality of life adjustments that are here make it a joy to return to these fantastic JRPGs. Both games are a delight to play on the Switch. There’s a charm here that I longed for when I played Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and I’m delighted to think how much joy they’ll bring others. These are fantastic games, and I hope for further preservation efforts for other entries from Konami.

In an interview with Dengeki Online, Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito, IP & game director Takahiro Sakiyama, and Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster Director Tatsuya Ogushi talked about the future of the series, and the announcements made on the recent Suikoden Special Program. At one point, the Dengeki interviewer asked about the possibility of playing remastered versions of the sequels to Suikoden 1 and 2. In response to that, Producer Naito echoed his intention to reinvigorate the Suikoden series and build upon it in the future, and how the announcement of the mobile game Suikoden Star Leap and the Suikoden: The Anime series will be the second step of that process.

The developer continued by saying that they don't know how many steps there will be, and joked that there could be as many as 108, in reference to the number of Stars of Destiny in each game. As Konami's only RPG series, Naito said they want to make sure they're taking it one step at a time, so they aren’t considering remastering the sequels yet, and will consider what comes next after their current projects are completed.

Critical Role and Konami announced on social media that, in honor of the debut of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster collection, there will be a special one-shot episode based on the games. That will be held at 7pm PT/10pm ET on March 11, 2025. There’s no placeholder for it on YouTube yet.

We do know a few things about the Suikoden Critical Role adventure. It will be set in Muse City in the Dunan Republic, a region that was founded after the Dunan Unification War depicted in Suikoden 2. It is unknown if this means we’ll see characters from that entry who remain in the city after the events of that title, such as Fitcher. Matthew Mercer will be the game master (DM) for the session, with Arin Hanson, Ashley Johnson, Zachary Renauldo, and Zeno Robinson participating in the game.

This is one of many ways Konami is honoring the Suikoden series, as more came up during a showcase about the games on March 3, 2025. An anime adaptation of the second installment is in development. There’s lots of new merchandise on the way. An entirely new mobile entry called Suikoden Star Leap is also in development.

Suikoden Star Leap has been formally revealed by Konami. This title is the latest entry in the beloved JRPG series, returning to the 2D spirit of the first couple of PS1 titles. This is a brand new, original game that is set in the same universe as the mainline Suikoden games.

Suikoden Star Leap was revealed for Android and iOS during the Suikoden Live 2025 event. The mobile game appears to be a traditional turn-based experience that features 2D graphics reminiscent of the HD-2D style. It will act as a canonical, in-universe prequel to the original Suikoden I as well as a sequel to Suikoden V, set in between both games.

The new mobile game will feature its own set of 108 Stars for players to recruit throughout the world. These 108 recruitable characters will be completely original, brand new characters that will the player’s home base. That home base will be a repurposing of the protagonist’s destroyed village that can be customized and expanded upon.

For those fans looking to see returning characters, some series favorites will make an appearance here. In addition to the core 108 new characters, players will be able to fight alongside familiar faces. The story will center around a specific Rune of Change and how it affects the main characters on their journey.

Suikoden Star Leap doesn’t end with the mobile game, though. There is also a manga adaptation of its plot coming down the line. Unfortunately, there is no confirmation at this time of a worldwide release of the game or manga. There is also no release date or window for their releases in Japan for now. More details are to come soon, as Suikoden Live will now become a regular Konami event. Before Star Leap’s release, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster will drop on March 6, 2025.

Konami announced that Suikoden 2 will receive an anime adaptation under the title of Suikoden: The Anime. The company has yet to reveal a release window and production on the series just started, so this anime adaptation might be a ways off.

Yuzo Sato will be the director while Ryo Hino, from NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, will act as producer. Konami Animation will work on the adaptation and it will be the first time the studio works on a TV anime series. Sato has previously worked as director on Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge and Exception. Additionally, the Rune of Beginning is being used as the logo for the anime adaptation, similar to how it is the logo for Suikoden 2 in the HD remaster collection.

The Suikoden 2 anime adaptation was revealed with a brief teaser trailer that simply shows Japanese text over a night starry sky with a full moon followed by images of a waterfall and a mysterious stone marked with an X hidden within a forest. The text itself translates to “With that strength, I thought I could protect everyone.”

The announcement appeared during the Suikoden Special Program livestreamed by Konami, and was described as the “second step” in a comeback for the game series. Director Yuzo Sato and Producer Ryo Hino appeared during the livestream to give some details about their work on the anime. The livestream features English subtitles via YouTube’s closed captions.

Suikoden: The Anime is currently in production by Konami Animation. There is no release window set and more information will appear in the future.

Konami announced a new line of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster acrylic stands featuring various characters in memorable “scenes” from the games. The first volume will include characters that are prominently featured on the first game, and they will appear as prizes in Japan from March 6, 2025.

The characters included in Volume 1 of the Suikoden acrylic stand collection are protagonist Tir McDohl, Gremio, Odessa, and Ted. The acrylic stands themselves feature the classic 1995 art by Junko Kawano, accompanied by a text box with iconic lines (the aforementioned scenes) from the characters. Meanwhile, the portraits appearing in the text boxes display the new updated art, also made by Kawano for the remaster.

While Konami has yet to announce Volume 2 and given the focus on the first game in the remaster, we might see Suikoden 2 characters featured in the next volume.

Konami announced we’ll learn more about the Suikoden series and games in a Special Program on YouTube at 3pm PT/6pm ET on March 3, 2025. It debuts ahead of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars collection, which debuts worldwide on March 6, 2025. 

The details about the showcase are incredibly vague. We basically only know when it will be. Konami didn’t even note if it will be focused on the remaster collection of the first two games or discuss other titles. It did mention “latest news,” so it is possible we could learn more about other mainline entries like Suikoden 3, 4, and 5 or perhaps even original and new ones.

While there hasn’t been such a possibly wide-reaching Suikoden series Special Program in quite some time, we did see some presentations about games recently. For example, a 2024 Tokyo Game Show one appeared on September 27, 2025, and that focused on Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster. 

Leading up to that release, Konami’s shared brief tidbits about the two titles in it. It shared lore updates to prepare people for the political tensions in the region. Brief gameplay teasers appeared too, which shows how they look on the new platforms and the new character portraits.

The newest Suikoden 1 HD Remaster teaser trailer calls attention to the recruitment process for Lotte, a young mage missing her cat named Mina. Konami shared a clip and ensuing screenshot in the name of Japan’s National Cat Day on February 22, 2025. 

The video features Tir, the hero of Suikoden 1 HD Remaster, happening upon Lotte in Rikon. She’s upset as her beloved cat Mina is missing. She notes that if you can find the cat, she’ll become a part of the Liberation Army. 

A few hours after the Suikoden 1 HD Remaster video clip post showing Lotte mentioning her missing cat to Tir, the company shared the following tweet with a screenshot of the hero finding the animal in the town of Kaku. Interacting with Mina then will allow you to catch the feline, then return to Lotte to recruit her.

Lore about the first two games also appeared on the official Konami social media .

Konami isn’t the only Japanese company that honored the occasion. Atlus did too. It shared a poll on social media asking people to vote for the best cats from its games.

Konami shared a new clip of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster showing footage of the villain Neclord in the second game in the collection. In the first two Suikoden games, Neclord is a vampire lord waging war against the city of Tinto.

The clip shared shows Neclord arriving to Tinto City followed by his horde of zombies, with the intention of creating his own kingdom in the mountain range where the city is built on. The post was shared on the Suikoden X (formerly Twitter) official , accompanied by a caption quoting Neclord’s greeting to the city of Tinto and mayor Gustav. The English version of the clip also shows the new translation of the game.

Konami offered another look at the Suikoden 1 HD Remaster that is part of the compilation in a new gameplay trailer on social media, and it features that moment when hero Tir McDohl talks with Ted, and then later his father and other allies. The footage allows us to see the new character portraits, as well as how the environments and character sprites look in this version of the game.

This Suikoden 1 HD Remaster gameplay video begins almost at the outset of the adventure. Tir arrived home and is quickly met by his best friend Ted. He asks that the hero tells him all about meeting the Scarlet Moon Empire Emperor Barbarossa Rugner, the empire's mage Windy, and s the party. The two then head to Tir’s room, where Ted begs to become part of Tir’s party to help repay his father Teo and the family. The player agrees in the footage. While this is going on, everyone else heads into the dining room in the background. Ted also insinuates that he has a secret to share, but Gremio interrupts, so it gets put aside for the moment.

Tir and Ted then Teo, Gremio, Pahn, and Cleo in the dining room. Teo announces that he’s been called away, and Tir will be in charge while he’s gone. He asks that Gremio, Cleo, Pahn, and Ted all Tir while he’s away. We then see his toast to Tir and to the empire.

This video isn’t available in English yet. However, the “character of the day” on the English Suikoden social media is Ted. It features a brief introduction to the ally, as well as a look at his new profile picture from the remaster.

Konami shared hints of things to come when it comes to Suikoden, as the opening movies for Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster are now live online. In each case, we get to see an animated movie highlighting major characters from the Suikoden installments, as well as locations and events. 

First, here’s the Suikoden 1 HD Remaster opening movie. It debuted on YouTube first. It begins with a look at the Soul Eater True Rune, which is the one held by Tir McDohl, the hero of the game. After that, we see Tir himself, followed by prominent Suikoden characters like Ted, Flik, Mathiu Silverberg, Pahn, Cleo, Viktor, and Gremio. We also see the castle town, antagonists, and a quick montage of portraits of the Stars of Destiny.

The Suikoden 2 HD Remaster opening movie appeared on YouTube a day later and follows the same format. Since Riou and Jowy’s stories feature so prominently, the two of them appear first in the video. This is followed by images of their True Runes, the Bright Shield Rune and Black Sword Rune. After that, we see a village aflame, a prominent point in the story, and some major characters who aren’t Stars of Destiny in Suikoden 2. Jillia Blight appears, as does her stepfather Agares Blight. At about the 1:30 mark, we start to see the Stars of Destiny show up, with Riou, Jowy, Nanami, and scenes featuring others interacting with each other.

Leading up to the rerelease of the games, we’ll see more of these familiar faces. Konami is constantly sharing details about characters on social media. 108 will be revealed leading up to launch.

Aeon Fantasy will work with Konami to release new Suikoden I and II merchandise via a scratch lottery. The company will hold the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Molly Online Scratch lottery in Japan between October and November 2024.

This lottery will feature six characters from each entry. While most of the prizes will feature new chibi illustrations of the characters, one of them will show the in-game portraits from the remasters that Konami will release for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC on March 6, 2025. The first Suikoden characters will particularly have the new portrait versions drawn by the original illustrator Junko Kawano.

In addition, Aeon Fantasy will hand over a random bonus chibi character bromide to people who purchase a set of ten tickets. However, they must make the purchases in one go to be eligible for the bonus.
