Atlus posted a new video for Metaphor: ReFantazio introducing the Prince’s Curse. The Prince’s Curse is a part of the story that will affect the player’s journey as they explore Euchronia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLxHO2KRX10

According to the video, someone attacked and placed the spell on the prince, causing what looks like dark vines to protrude from his chest. It’s such powerful magic that even people who normally can’t see it are able to perceive those vines. At the time of the attack, sages within the palace tried to dispel the curse on the prince. But the curse was very complicated and they were unable to do so. This prince is the childhood friend of the main protagonist and this curse is the inciting incident that causes the protagonist to go on a journey.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is an fantasy game from the creators of Persona 3, 4, and 5. It’ll feature some familiar elements to people who played those games, such as a schedule system and a relationship system. Granted, other RPGs also have these sorts of mechanics in place. You can read our preview of it here.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will come out on October 11, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. More information on the story and the lore will appear every day on the Atlus YouTube channel.

Atlus’ key developers including Studio Zero’s creative producer & game director Katsura Hashino, Shin Megami Tensei series producer Kazuyuki Yamai, and Persona team producer Kazuhisa Wada shared some quotes on their current projects in Famitsu magazine’s ambitions for 2019 feature.

Katsura Hashino

Keyword for 2019: The pandemonium reaches its climax on Valentine’s Day!

Katsura Hashino: “With the goal of an official announcement, I’m currently working hard with a new studio on a brand-new RPG that isn’t Megaten or Persona. In any case, I believe it’ll be a work that we’ve yet to see. You might think about what makes a traditional fantasy game from that point on. Our confidence grows each day, together as a team moving forward. With a open minds. We’ll move forward without getting lost, and have fun as we work to advance forward. Please look forward to it.”

Kazuyuki Yamai

Keyword for 2019: Doki-doki

Kazuyuki Yamai: “I believe 2019 will be a year of ‘various’ questions from everyone. I’m both nervous and excited. I pray that all our efforts pay off.”

Recent report: “We’re working diligently on Shin Megami Tensei V. I apologize for not being able to release much news on it. With all the details that goes into making it with Unreal Engine 4, it just takes some time. It would mean a lot if you can wait a little longer for news.”

Kazuhisa Wada

Keyword for 2019: To lift off

Kazuhisa Wada: “To me personally, 2019 is going to be a crucially important year. Up to now we’ve advanced on various projects. We put some work into general improvements and preparations, and it is finally time to come to fruition. The next five years could see a change depending on how things go in 2019. It’ll be a year of challenge.”

Katsuhra Hashino of Atlus is working on Project Re Fantasy with studio, Studio Zero, which was founded last year. While it didn’t get much of an appearance at TGS 2018, Hashino shared an update during an IGN Japan broadcast. [Thanks, Gamestalk.]

The interview took place during a showing of Catherine: Full Body at the start of the live stream. Hashino says that unlike the Persona series, this requires the world setting needs to be made from scratch, so it’ll take longer.

However, he also added that the story setting is mostly complete. While he didn’t share any new details about the game, he said that Atlus will start sharing more information bits at a time after Catherine: Full Body releases, on February 14, 2019.

Here’s what Hashino-san said during the broadcast:

“It’s taking quite a bit of time, but if we were to say Shibuya is the setting, then you wouldn’t really have think of much for a Shibuya setting, right? However, this time since it’s a fictitious world, we have to make it interesting from scratch. So let’s say if Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings writer, J. R. R. Tolkien) were still around today, what kind of fantasy world would he make after having seen the modern world, and what would it have? And that’s what we’re doing, so instead of looking back at other fantasy games we’ve had until now and going from there, we’re starting from zero.

The story’s setting is also shaping up nicely, but even though we did create Studio Zero in order to make Project Re Fantasy, we’re also doing Catherine: Full Body, which releases February 14 next year, so once things settle down there, then I hope we get to start sharing things about Project Re Fantasy with you guys.”

Project Re Fantasy’s platform(s) has yet to be announced.

Atlus hosted a special live stream where we got to check out a new concept trailer for Project Re Fantasy, and it’s as fantasy as it gets with a knight, cleric, dragon riders, magic, and more.

We saw the first concept video almost exactly a year ago and Atlus wanted to take the occasion to show us the next one that comes with plenty of traditional fantasy elements. Atlus started out as the “antithesis of the orthodox” by making Shin Megami Tensei but the company will face a new challenge by making a fantasy game that is as orthodox as it gets.

Studio Zero recently mentioned that things are going well for the project, but they are currently in need of some more programmers and designers to continue moving forward.

Katsura Hashino shared in a message that they haven’t started working on anything concrete as far as its setting goes, but he wanted to share the concept trailer to give us an idea what they have in mind. He also added that they haven’t changed their idea on making a “high-fantasy” title, but also hopes fans watch it and think “huh, well that’s different” about some of the parts that are shown.

Here’s a look at some more concept art from the trailer:

Lastly, here's a bonus video from Atlus:

Project Re Fantasy’s platform(s) has yet to be announced.

Atlus shared an update on their new orthodox fantasy RPG, Project Re Fantasy, in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

In the update, Atlus shared that the team has already solidified the idea and direction for its traditional fantasy RPG.

Studio Zero is at a point where the staff has a good feeling they can make something good now; however, although they recruited some new they are still low on programmers and designers for the project.

Atlus and Studio Zero are working together as new allies, and they feel building chemistry to make Catherine: Full Body will be an important part of fusing their creativity. This is also something they feel will be an important influence in the making of Project Re Fantasy.

While Catherine: Full Body and Project Re Fantasy may be of different genres, the developers behind their making are together as one.

Project Re Fantasy’s platform(s) has yet to be announced. You can read more about Catherine: Full Body in our earlier report.

Katsura Hashino, the producer of Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 launched Studio Zero to work on a new orthodox fantasy RPG tentatively titled Project Re Fantasy, but he revealed that it’s not all they’re working on.

At the end of an interview with 4Gamer, the former-Persona director and producer was asked to share anything on the future, to which he responded by saying “Firstly, Studio Zero was by no means started just to make fantasy titles, and we’re currently working on a title that isn’t fantasy.”

He continued, “I can’t share too many details, but we’re preparing something that will make you say ‘there’s also that!?’ and I believe we’ll be able to show everyone that first. But of course I hope you’re all looking forward to new info on Project Re Fantasy, too, and thank you for your !”
