Back when Kotobukiya teased a new Star Trek Bishoujo figure back in February 2024, it seemed to be hinting at one based in part on Captain Kirk from the original series. Now at Anime Expo 2024, the company fully revealed the character and her design. Pre-orders for it will open sometime in Summer 2024.

It very much seems like the Shunya Yamashita design for this new Star Trek Bishoujo figure references Captain Kirk in the same way the Vulcan one was inspired by Spock. The character is a Command Offer, just like he was. She also has the same blonde hair and blue eyes. The figure’s pose will feature her holding a phaser and speaking into a communicator.

Here’s the official announcement, which included the Yamashita concept art alongside the finished painted prototype.

https://twitter.com/Kotobukiya_EN/status/1808879439427874949

You can’t buy the “Captain Kirk” like version of the next Star Trek Bishoujo Command Officer figure yet. However, another one based on the characters from the series will be available at Kotobukiya’s booth. The company will be selling the a Medical Officer figure at the event. A limited number will be available to buy each day. Given that she has blonde hair, she could be based on Nurse Christine Chapel from the original series.

There’s no release window for the Star Trek Command OfficerBishoujo figure yet, but pre-orders will open in Summer 2024. Anime Expo runs July 4-7, 2024 at the LA Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.

Bishoujo Darkstalkers, Transformers, and Star Trek Exclusive Figures at Anime Expo

Kotobukiya announced its three exclusive Anime Expo 2024 figures, and they are Bishoujo Darkstalkers, Transformers, and Star Trek variants. They involve a new color for Lilith, a Cliff Jumper version of Bumblebee, and a Medical Officer alt.

The cheapest of the three figures is the Star Trek Bishoujo Medical Officer. She costs $129.99. She has blonde hair pulled into a ponytail and held by a bow, is using a tricorder, and wears a blue Medical Officer dress uniform. She s the existing Science Officer and Operation Officer Uhura.

Slightly more expensive is the Darkstalkers Lilith Bishoujo figure variant. The original one launched in November 2022. This one shares Morrigan’s color scheme and costs $139.99.

Finally, the Bishoujo Transformers Cliff Jumper figure is the most expensive of the three. She’s based on the Bumblebee one that’s already available. It’s basically red and grey instead of yellow and black. That costs $149.99.

Here's how all three will look:

All three will be sold at Kotobukiya’s booth, which is 1706, between July 4-7, 2024. Each day, a set number of each of the three figures is being sold. Visiting the booth will also give you a chance to get a $14.99 Kaiju No 8 pin set or pick up free Bishoujo trading cards.

Anime Expo is July 4-7, 2024, and it is held at the  Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.

Star Trek Bishoujo Figure Teased, May Be Based on Captain Kirk

Kotobukiya announced a new Star Trek Bishoujo figure, and this time the hint suggests it is inspired by Captain Kirk. However, only a silhouette of the character appeared.

In this line of Kotobukiya figures, as is common with the Bishoujo collection, it focuses on depictions of female characters. This is the case even if they aren’t originally that gender in the source material.

For this figure, the Star Trek Bishoujo heroine’s figure has a dynamic pose. She is holding a phaser in her right hand and is speaking into a communicator in her left. She also appears to be perched on a rock of some sort. The art makes it look as though she is being beamed up.

As for the hints about it being a figure of a captain, two seem to suggest that. The first is that the silhouette is yellow, which is the color of Command uniforms in the original Star Trek. The second is that the English announcement on social media begins with “Space: the final frontier,” which is how Kirk would begin the show.

https://twitter.com/Kotobukiya_EN/status/1753255921503903979

There are two other figures in this line. The first is a Science officer from Star Trek based on Spock. The second one was a Communications officer based on Uhura.

There’s no release date for Kotobukiya’s next Star Trek figure.

Bishoujo Star Trek Uhura Figure Revealed

Kotobukiya revealed Uhura as the latest entry into the Bishoujo Star Trek statue series. The figure was first teased back in July during San Diego Comic Con 2023, but has now been officially revealed with a release planned for late summer 2024.

Guaranteed pre-orders in Japan will run through to January 30, 2024. After January 2024, there will be a limited amount of pre-orders available. Once the figure sells out, no more pre-orders will be accepted. Bishoujo Uhura will cost ¥17,600 (~$120 USD) in Japan when purchased from Kotobukiya's online store and $130 in North America when purchased from Sideshow.

Nyota Uhura's statue has a stylish hairstyle with her iconic earpiece for conducting her work as an operation officer. Uhura is also seen in her retro red Starfleet uniform dress and a hand phaser can be placed into her hand. The stand of Uhura's statue is based on the transporter room of the USS Enterprise. Two tribbles, an alien species known for multiplying as they consume food, are shown on the transporter pad. Fans of Star Trek will recognize the tribbles as a throwback to an iconic episode of the television series, "The Trouble With Tribbles". Images of the statue can be viewed below:

Kotobukiya's first entry into the Bishoujo Star Trek statue series was of the Vulcan Science Officer, based off of the design of Spock from Star Trek: The Original Series. Both Uhura and the Vulcan Science Officer were designed by illustrator Shunya Yamashita. The Bishoujo Star Trek Uhura statue was sculpted by Takaboku Busujima, who has worked on other sculpts in the Bishoujo statue line like Rogue from X-Men and Kate Bishop from Hawkeye.

A third statue is in development for the first season of the Bishoujo Star Trek figure series.

Bishoujo Star Trek Uhura will ship June 2024 in Japan and July 2024 and September 2024 in North America.

Next Star Trek Bishoujo Figure Teaser Looks Like Nyota Uhura

Just ahead of the 2023 San Diego Comic Con, Kotobukiya made some figure announcements. Among them was a teaser for the next Star Trek Bishoujo figure, and it appears to be one inspired by Nyota Uhura from the original series. Only a silhouette appeared, so there’s no full reveal just yet.

Here is the official announcement for the next Star TrekBishoujo figure. She has a similar hairstyle as Uhura. She also wears the same hoop earrings. In addition, the hand gesture for her left hand is one she would make in the series, as she’d hold equipment to her ear as a communications officer.

However, in a past interview Kotobukiya noted that the characters in the Star Trek Bishoujo figure line are inspired by particular roles in the series. So the Vulcan one who is a science officer is just inspired by Spock from the original show. As such, this could be an original Star Trek figure inspired by Nyota Uhura.

There’s no official reveal or release window yet for this next Bishoujo figure. The first Star Trek Vulcan one will appear in September 2023 in Japan and show up worldwide later this year. The San Diego Comic Con runs July 20-23, 2023.

Kotobukiya Bishoujo Star Trek Vulcan Figure Inspired by Spock

Kotobukiya’s Kurosu took to MyFigureCollection to explain the inspiration behind the first Star Trek Bishoujo figure and noted that Spock did inspire the character. While the finished product is based on a general science officer from the original series, the different renditions of one of the most famous Vulcan’s in the show influenced her.

Specifically, a handful of the Kotobukiya Star Trek Vulcan Bishoujo figure are designed to be callbacks to Spock. In the article, Kurosu cited the makeup referencing that of Leonard Nimoy’s in the original TV show. Her hair color is also black, referencing the various portrayals of the character over the years. At one point during the design process, it almost ended up being “light gray.”

Kurosu also noted the haircut in another point in the piece. Shunya Yamashita, the designer for the Bishoujo series, maintained the “signature five-point cut” that Star Trek Vulcans tend to have. However, the sculptor did need to redo the prototype’s hair and ears.

The article from Kurosu also hinted at some additional Star Trek Bishoujo figures that could appear. Kotobukiya picked generic crew to go with different officers. Kurosu noted, “We’re hoping to make other officers, such as an operations officer, command officer, and explore a variety of options in this series.”

The Star Trek Bishoujo figure is expected to arrive in Japan in September 2023, with a worldwide release appearing sometime after.

Figure maker Kotobukiya unveiled the appearance of its Star Trek Bishoujo Vulcan figure. The official Kotobukiya online store updated the product page for the figure, officially named the Star Trek Bishoujo Vulcan Science Officer. It also appeared on the Sideshow Collectibles site for international pre-orders.

The figure stands about 8.5" inches (about 22.6 cm) tall and is made of PVC. It will ship in September 2023, and costs 16,500 Yen (about $120 USD) in Japan. The Sideshow collectibles product page sets the pre-order price at $130 USD, with an October-December 2023 shipping window.

As with other figures in the line, the Bishoujo Vulcan Science Officer is based on a character design by illustrator Shunya Yamashita. First revealed in early February 2023, the design shows a black-haired female Vulcan officer wearing a Starfleet uniform in the style of the original 1966 Star Trek TV series.

[gallery size="medium" ids="954551,954552,954553,954554,954555,954556" link="file"]

Though technically not a female version of Star Trek character Spock, she shares the same specialization, species, and rank as the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise crew member. She also carries an original series-style tricorder in a black shoulder bag, and is posed striking the distinctive Vulcan salute. The base of the figure also replicates rock and sand, implying she's on an away team mission.

The Bishoujo Vulcan Science Officer is the first of three planned Star Trek Bishoujo figures. The other two designs haven't been revealed yet, so it's possible that they could be based on other original series characters. They could also be based on designs from different  Star Trek eras, like that of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or even Enterprise or Star Trek Discovery.

The Star Trek Bishoujo Vulcan Science Officer is available for pre-order.

First Star Trek Bishoujo Figure is a Vulcan

Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo line of figures involves Shunya Yamashita creating new visions of characters, then merchandise being produced. A number of folks from shows, movies, and games are a part of the line. Now at Kotobukiya Collection 2023 [Winter], it confirmed a Star Trek Vulcan Science Officer is in development.

Here’s the official announcement for the Star Trek Bishoujo figure reveal. Keep in mind this is just a teaser. Only a silhouette for the woman is shown. The finished figure will be a 1/7th one.

It is important to note that the Bishoujo line often involves female versions of existing male characters. For example, there’s one of the female version of Terry Bogard from SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Also, there are three Transformers figures of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Bumblebee as attractive women. As this description notes it is a Vulcan Science Officer and she is giving the Vulcan salute, there is a chance this could end up being a figure of Spock as a woman. However, it could also be a generic female Vulcan Science Officer as well.

Kotobukiya didn’t announce when it plans to officially reveal the identity of the Star Trek Bishoujo Vulcan Science Officer figure. There’s also no release window for it yet.

While the new Star Trek game from Digital Reality aims at bringing in new fans, it also aims to please older fans that have been with the franchise for a while. At GDC, executive producer Brian Miller gave us a couple of examples of references older fans might smile at.

There are some references to the 1960s series in Star Trek. Isn't the plot centered around the episode "Arena" which the Gorn are in?

Brian Miller, executive producer: There are some [references]. We talked about what enemy you want and there is certainly a big list. Frankly, we all smiled a little bit because we knew some of the enemies that would be in some of the other films, particularly the sequel. The Gorn was on the top of everybody's list.

I think that was a credit to the old show. The fact that it was one episode with William Shatner fight a rubber suited guy. If you go to Yahoo! and look it up it's listed as the worse fight scene of all time, which i think is wrong—it's the greatest fight scene of all time.

-

Our game isn't just a mirror of the "Arena" episode, but we pulled a lot of that out there. We wanted to be faithful to that. We wanted to give this big broad appeal to Star Trek, but also take care of fans have been with us. When you watch the "Arena" episode there is this outpost that gets attacked by the Gorn and Kirk and Spock and the team rush after the Gorn and sort of shoot them out and they get into an arena. We pick up that storyline, we pick up the arena fight that was in that old episode. We have the Gorn, we get to create a world for that and that allows us to bring us into the canon for the new universe.

Going back to the 1960s series, what other elements or references did you take from that and add into the Star Trek video game?

I will give you one. We have a co-op game and the whole nature of a co-op game is to work together to solve a problem. Well, we all looked at each one day and said wouldn't it be great if you're about eight hours in or halfway in and you get into a moment in the game where you don't want to help your partner. What if you want to get to a point where you want to get into a fight with your partner?

There is an old episode called "Amok Time" where Kirk and Spock had to fight each other. Perfect thing for us to reference in our game. Again, it was how do we work make it work for the game? How do we make the gameplay work? And how do we throw these little bits and pieces that a hardcore Star Trek fan will pick up on and also will not alienate a bigger audience who will say "I didn't see that episode so this doesn't work for me."

We have a lot of those little bits, like hidden Tribbles throughout the game. There are those extra little things you can go around and try to collect to get extra [experience] points because Star Trek is about discovery and exploration. It's not about shooting a bunch of lizards for 15 hours.

Star Trek The Video Game will be released on April 23.

The Darkness II developer, Digital Extremes, are developing a new Star Trek game in collaboration with Paramount Digital Entertainment. The game, which takes place after the 2009 movie, is being written by God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, and will be co-published by Namco Bandai. It was present at their recent Gamer Day event in Las Vegas, where we had a chance to watch a demo of it being played.

The co-op demo for Star Trek was played by two staff . It began with Kirk and Spock returning from an away mission to find the Enterprise caught up in energy tendrils and not responding to hails. The two disembarked from the shuttle and dove onto an open bay on the Enterprise, with Spock landing gracefully and Kirk crash-landing. This brief portion was designed to show how different play will be for both characters. While this was a co-op demo, in single player, Kirk and Spock will each go about missions differently.

Kirk and Spock weren't able to find any life signs upon landing, and a nearby red-shirted crew member suggested the worst. Upon scanning the redshirt with the series’ famous tricorder device, it revealed that he’d been done in by some sort an infection. In Star Trek, you can use the tricorder to analyze and record information like the Scan Visor from Metroid Prime, and doing this will have various helpful effects such as giving you access to alien technology for your weapons, for instance. In this particular mission, scanning redshirts, the developers said, would prove helpful later on.

Kirk and Spock were then able to hear from Uhura, who was still alive and in the shuttle bay. Some unknown enemy had invaded the ship and the two would have to make it through to rescue the survivors. This was proving difficult, as enemies were lurking everywhere, and would need to be taken out.

Kirk and Spock both play differently during combat as well. Kirk is flashy. His weapons do more damage, his melee attacks are brawny, and a good tactic is to set a phaser to stun and follow up with a melee kill. Weapon upgrades make Kirk’s weapons stronger and flashier. Meanwhile, Spock is described as a “Space Ninja”. His weapons become more accurate as they level up and he’s sneakier. For instance, after a Stasis melee attack enemies wake up not knowing what happened to them.

Cutscenes in Star Trek are interactive. Soon enough, Kirk and Spock found themselves surrounded by enemies and you can move and shoot enemies while cutscenes play out. The player controlling Spock demonstrated this by pre-emptively attacking one of the enemies. Meanwhile, Kirk overloaded part of the ship to damage enemies around a control . Unfortunately, he was soon overpowered and poisoned by one of them, at which point Spock had to rescue him. The player controlling him used a Mind Meld technique to have an enemy fight for Spock while he reached Kirk, grabbing him.

This part of the demo gave a glimpse of what is being called "asymmetrical co-op". Spock—with Kirk in tow—was the one moving and had to get Kirk to the Medbay to save his life. Meanwhile, the player controlling Kirk had to shoot enemies while they made their retreat. For co-op, if you don’t have a friend you can play with, you’ll be assisted by an AI partner. You can play Star Trek either in single player or online co-op mode, and friends can drop in and out of your game.

Once Kirk and Spock got to the Medbay, the redshirt information recorded with the tricorder came into play. Because the people controlling the demo scanned enough downed allies, it was easier for Spock to play a mini-game that eliminated toxic parasites from Kirk, and prevented him from ending up like their late crew . Meanwhile, the player controlling Kirk continued to hold off enemy forces as Spock did his thing.

Eventually, the enemy aliens overwhelmed both of them, and the two woke up surrounded. The aliens wanted control of the ship. Spock told Kirk not to do it, but Kirk responded that if they wanted a ship, they'd get one. Kirk then sent the shuttle Spock and he flew in on into the Enterprise as the demo ended.

During a Q&A session after the demo, Brian Miller, Paramount Pictures’ Senior Vice President and Star Trek Producer, and Steve Sinclair, Creative Director from Digital Extremes, said that the developers are going to great lengths to make the game feel authentic. For instance, actors from the movie are being scanned into the game and character animations are based on body language from 2009 movie. However, when we asked if actors from the recent Star Trek would provide voices for their characters, we were told that we’d have to wait until a later date to find out.

Star Trek is slated for release in Q1 2013 and Namco Bandai is tied to the video game as a co-publisher. “Working with Paramount Pictures and Digital Extremes reinforces Namco Bandai Games’ commitment of expanding its portfolio to include Triple ‘A’ Western developed games in addition to its popular and well-respected Japanese Franchises,” said Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing. “Digital Extremes’ attention to detail, and the collaboration with Paramount Pictures and the team at Bad Robot Interactive will create an authenticity that is sure to thrill Star Trek fans and gamers alike.”
