While there are exciting, thrilling moments in the lives of spy Loid Forger, assassin Yor Forger, and telepath Anya Forger, a lot of the series is a day-by-day, slice of life experience. Spy x Anya: Operation Memories, the first major Spy x Family game, really gets that by putting the focus on Anya attempting to complete a school assignment. While the nature of getting every photo does mean a bit of repetition and there is an awkward launch into it, it ended up being a fun little sim about family and photographing Anya at key moments like she’s an ever-present Pikachu in Pokemon Snap.

I was actually a bit thrown when Spy x Anya: Operation Memories began, since there was no introductory story setting the stage for the Spy x Family game. Rather, Anya Forger was in her class at Eden Academy and a tutorial went over controls right away. It didn’t even explain the whole purpose of the game until I went through learning how to move Anya, the camera, talk to people, and head home. It’s only once she was back home with her parents Loid and Yor that the whole purpose of the game was revealed in a flashback. One of her latest assignments is to create a diary. Because she wants to make it awesome and impress “Second Son” Damian Desmond to help her actually-a-spy father with his mission involving Donovan Desmond, her family agrees to help her with outings to create memories.

It’s an awkward choice, to be certain. I’m very familiar with Spy x Family, thanks to reading the manga and watching the anime, so I had no problem immediately catching up with what’s going on in the game. However, people who don’t have that familiarity are going to be completely left in the dark. Something as simple as a brief introduction with Anya explaining who she is, her telepathic powers, why her “father” Loid created the fake family, and that her “mother” Yor is actually an assassin, would be a big help and would help make the transition into the experience easier and smoother. 

Once you get past the many tutorials, it becomes fairly clear that Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is a Pokemon Snap sort of game that mixes minigames and opportunities to socialize with the cast of Spy x Family with dress-ups and photo ops. Anya will take part in a family meeting, during which the destination of the next outing will be selected. While waiting for that day to come up, she’ll go to school and spend time at home. At both locations, there are opportunities to talk with of the series’ casts to form relationships with them and chances to make memories. There will also be chances to interact with items Anya finds especially interesting for a photo for her diary.

Said photos are their own minigame. You need to get the shot in focus, ensure the angle is correct to be able to catch all people or points of interest, then nail the timing to get the perfect shot. A visual indicator of three light-up frames let you know when that moment arrives. That’s also paired with multiple opportunities to repeat the moment, so you can be assured you’ll get a perfect three-star picture photo for the diary showing the focus, angle, and timing is just right. You get to do one of these at school each day, and another one at home every evening.

In the case of the outings in Spy x Anya: Operation Memories, those are a bit more involved. You get a chance to buy items from the in-game store with points earned from photos and minigames. These can be used at certain points in outing locations for special memories and photo ops. It also makes the prospect of purchasing or earning extra raffle outfits and accessories more appealing, since everyone’s appearance changes when you do. There are missions with rewards like raffle tickets for completing certain tasks. Plus taking photos with all three special items assigned to an area unlocks an additional shot. 

Unlocking actually comes up quite a bit, but it’s handled in such a way in Spy x Anya: Operation Memories that it doesn’t feel too burdensome. New outing prospects open up as you get through the tutorial and view existing ones. More clothing, accessories, and items do as well. Though honestly, in the case of the cosmetics, they’re more of a nice bonus than a requirement. Given how cute Anya is and how faithful Loid and Yor’s appearances are, it’s totally fine and doesn’t feel terribly limiting if you don’t completely splurge. 

The additional outings and such also unlock new minigames, which Anya can play in the evening to earn Play Points to put toward items in the store if she uses earned Eurekas. The qualities of these vary, to be honest. I wasn’t a fan of the Cooking with Yor experience, as the timing seemed awkward for cutting vegetables. I did enjoy the rudimentary beat’em up involving Thorn Princess taking down waves of enemies as she headed toward a boss. Dodgeball Day at Eden College and the Loid’s Escape stealth minigame also weren’t too bad. I appreciated there was an attempt to offer more variety and experiences tailored to the series than in most minigame collections. 

I suppose where Spy x Anya: Operation Memories succeeds is that the game really does feel like a true Spy x Family experience. It’s cozy in its way, mimicking what daily life is probably like for the Forger family. Anya is allowed to ham it up as a character, and her personality helps carry it. It also looks spot-on, with some fantastic recreations, and the voice acting helps sell it as well. The only downside is the repetitive nature, since you will need to repeat outings and go through a lot of the same minigames and motions to unlock everything for Anya’s awesome diary.

Still, I enjoyed Spy x Anya: Operation Memories more than I expected, even though this Spy x Family game occasionally feels a bit awkward and repetitive. I would have appreciated an easier introduction to the experience and less hand-holding, but it’s thoroughly pleasant and true to the series its based on. As long as you’re not trying to speedrun it or marathon it in a single weekend, I think it’d be a lovely game to play at a relaxed pace.

It can be a really big deal when an anime series ends up inspiring its first game. Especially when it is a Shonen Jump series and the ensuing title doesn’t end up being something like a fighter. But that’s exactly happened with SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories, the first SPY x FAMILY game. It’s more of a relaxed, slice of life affair with Anya Forger as the focus. To learn more about its development, Siliconera spoke with Producer Yuri Kishi about the title.

Jenni Lada: When did you start working on the SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories SPY x FAMILY game? 

Yuri Kishi: The project started several years ago. When we started, the anime series had not yet been broadcast even in Japan, but the manga series had begun, and we were confident that the game would become even more spread in the future. Many of us in our office are also fans of the manga, and the project began with the desire of a fan to enjoy the world of the Spy Family in the form of a video game as well.

How influential is the SPY x FAMILY manga and anime on SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories, and which arcs can we expect to see events from in the game?

Kishi: In the game, the player assumes the role of Anya and collects photo memories of her daily life to complete a photo diary assignment from Eden College. During the day, players can go to school, and by night, they can spend time with the Forger family. On days off, players can go on family outings to the ocean, the aquarium, and other places to collect photo memories to put in Anya's diary.  

The game also features more than 15 unique mini games that are specific to SPY x FAMILY. For example, you can avoid a ball when playing Dodgeball by using Anya's Telepathy during mini game. In addition, the four Forger characters can enjoy more than 80 different dress-up options, including costumes from the anime as well as game-original clothing, accessories, and hairstyles that can only be found in the game.

There are 10 types of outings the Forger family can go on in game. How many different kinds of outcomes and experiences can we expect to experience at each location and place? How valuable will it be to return to the same spot multiple times?

Kishi: Depending on the progress of the game, the number of places you can go out will be unlocked. There are 10 locations in total, including the aquarium, museum, castle, and beach. Once you have visited a destination, you can go there as many times as you like and can decide where to go. At each destination, there are many things that Anya likes, such as butterflies and swings. When you find them, take a picture of them. If you take nice pictures, you will be able to collect memories to fill the diary. The "Super Cool! items" will change each time you visit a destination, so try going again and again and taking various photos. Once you have taken all the pictures, you will be able to see the wonderful event of the Forger family.

Which SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories outing was the most fun to implement?

Kishi: There are a total of 10 outings in the game, and the places featured in the anime, such as the museum and castle, are particularly impressive. Players can actually run around in the world of the anime. In addition to the destinations, the game offers the unique experience of running around as Anya in the Forger's house, Eden College, and other familiar places and interacting with characters like Loid, Yor, Damian, Yuri, and Fiona.

Appearances from SPY X FAMILY characters Damian, Becky, Yuri, and Fiona are already confirmed, but are there any other major characters we can expect to see in SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories?

Kishi: At Eden College, you can interact with Anya and her friends' homeroom teacher, Henderson, as well as Damian's friends, Emile and Ewen. You can participate in various mini-games with them, such as playing cards, attending Henderson's class, competing in evaluations, and even playing Dodgeball with Bill, who also appeared in the anime.

When picking out minigames for SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories, what kinds of activities and experiences did you try to prioritize?

Kishi: SPY x FAMILY incorporates unique characters, an outlandish yet heartwarming story, cool action, and comical story, making it popular among a wide range of customers, across all ages. We aimed to captures the essence of Spy x Family and can be enjoyed by anyone who loves the series by game which can be interactive entertainment. After thorough discussions within and outside the company, we developed the gameplay and style for SPY x ANYA: Operation Memories. In this game, players can enjoy unique mini-games based on anime, such as using Anya's telepathy to avoid a ball in Dodgeball, or reading your opponent's thoughts when playing cards. Additionally, there are mini games where players control Loid as “Twilight” to complete missions, Yor as "Thorn Princess" to defeat bad guys, and to run on a Bond.

Now that you’ve made a sort of life sim based on SPY x FAMILY, is there any other type of game based on the series you’d like to create?

Kishi: Currently, there are no plans for another game. However, as mentioned above, the world of SPY x FAMILY is so rich, I am sure there are other ways to adapt it into another game. We incorporated a lot of the charm of the work into SPY x ANYA, so I hope you will play this game!

Bandai Namco revealed the Spy x Anya: Operation Memories Deluxe Edition contents for the Spy x Family game worldwide. Both the Asian and European social media s showed the DLC packs included, as well as the bonus items everyone gets for buying that version of the title.

Two of the pieces of DLC are the Spy x Anya add-ons anyone can purchase separately. The Thrilling Outfit Pack includes two sets of clothing for Loid, Yor, Anya, and Bond. One is the Fancy Set of formal clothes, while the other is the Undercover Work Set that shows the clothing the characters wear at their jobs. It also gives people 10,000PP to spend and a Mr. Chimera Statue that doubles the amount of Eurekas earned. The Excited Outfit Pack involves more everyday clothing. The Denim Set gives Yor and Anya overalls, Loid jeans, and a t-shirt, and Bond a denim bow. The Punk Set involves black leather jackets, red plaid bottoms, and black boots for everyone. That pack also gives people another 10,000PP and a Penguin Statue that doubles earned PP. 

There are two bonus items that are only included in the Spy x Anya Digital Deluxe Edition. Both are costumes for Anya. One is a hat that looks like Director Chimera, the plush toy she frequently carries around. The other is a Bond Set costume, that lets Anya dress up as Bond the dog.

There’s a new Spy x Family game video clip, and it shows some of the costumes Anya can wear in Spy x Anya: Operation Memories. People can mix and match different elements to customize her look each day.

Once someone goes into the Outfit section in the Spy x Anya: Operation Memories menu, they will find items divided into the Outfits, Accessory, Hairstyle, and Hat sections. Someone can then mix and match to tailer her outfit. In many cases, it seems like the possible outfits are color swaps of certain designs. For example, in the portion looking at the dress Anya can wear under Outfits, there’s the Eden College Uniform, blue, green, and pink versions of the Training Outfit, a Gym Uniform, and blue, peach, and white versions of her Cardigan & Dress.

As a reminder, there will be other customization options for Spy x Family character costumes for Anya, Yor, and Loid in the game. DLC packs appeared that offered new clothing for the family. These already released in Japan, so we know how they’ll look.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is available on the Nintendo Switch in Japan, and the PS4 and PS5 versions launch there on June 27, 2024. It will appear worldwide on the Switch, PS5, and PS4 on June 28, 2024. A PC version is also planned and headed to Steam.

Bandai Namco has announced the Global console release date for the English version of Spy x Anya: Operation Memories. It will release the game for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in Southeast Asia on June 27, 2024, and in the West on June 28, 2024.

Spy x Anya has been available in Japan on Nintendo Switch, which had a much earlier release date of December 21, 2023. Bandai Namco also announced that it will release the PlayStation versions in Japan on the same day as the Southeast Asian releases on June 27, 2024. It will only release physical PS5 copies in the country, as the PS4 version will only be available digitally.

Bandai Namco has also ed a new trailer to mark the global release date announcement:

People who want to purchase the game digitally can also go for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Even though it has a higher cost, it will include two DLC outfit packs by default so they do not have to make additional separate purchases.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is immediately available on Nintendo Switch in Japan. The PlayStation 5 and 4 versions will follow in the country and the rest of Asia on June 27, 2024. Bandai Namco will release the game in the West on Switch, PS5, and PS4 on June 28, 2024. It will also bring the game to PCs via Steam at a later date.

Bandai Namco Entertainment has started selling two costume DLC packs for Spy x Anya: Operation Memories. Each pack is 1320 JPY ($8.95) and you can get a bundle for 2200 JPY ($14.90). [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The first set is the “Heart-Pounding Costume Pack” and the second is the “Exciting Costume Pack.” The deluxe edition of the game will also include the Deluxe Ooting Pack. The Heart-Pounding Costume Pack will include fancy formalwear for the Forger family, as well as work outfits. Yor and Loid look like they do when they go to their civilian jobs, and Anya’s wearing something that looks like a classic spy outfit.

The Exciting Costume Pack will come with punk rock style outfits, as well as denim outfits. Incidentally, all four costume packs feature something for Bond. For example, he has a denim bowtie in the Exciting Costume Pack and a pair of sunglasses on his head in the Heart-Pounding Costume Pack. The Deluxe Ooting Pack features all of these clothes, as well as a special outfits for Anya. One makes her look like Bond and the other makes her look like her chimera doll.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is a game that revolves around Anya trying to make the best picture diary ever. You can go out with your family, play games with your friends, and hang out with your dog. It will most revolve around mini-games, which you will use to complete your diary.

We now have an idea as to how some of the minigames you'll be able to play in Spy x Anya: Operation Memories work. Bandai Namco has also announced the contents of the digital deluxe edition that, along with the base game, is now available to pre-order in Japan. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

While the base game costs 7,480 JPY ($49.70), the digital deluxe edition will cost 9,350 JPY ($62.15). The digital deluxe edition of the game will come with an expansion for two DLCs. You’ll also be able to get a Bond-themed outfit for Anya, as well as a version of her wearing a hat of Commander Chimera. More information on the DLC will come out in the future.

We also have more information about what kinds of mini-games you’ll be able to play. In total, there will be 15 mini-games in Spy x Anya: Operation Memories. However, we only know about four of them.

• Go With Bond: Play as a dream version of Bond and collect as many stars as you can while avoiding obstacles.
• P2’s Chase: Collect as many peanuts as you can within the time limit while avoiding your pursuers. You can also eat macarons to power up and retaliate.
• Tycoon of Eden Academy: You can play as the various kids in Eden Academy in Tycoon, the card game.
• Yuri’s Yummy Meal: Play as Yuri to eat as much of Yor’s cooking as you can within a time limit. If a dish Loid made appears, it over to Anya.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories will come out on the Nintendo Switch on December 21, 2023 in Japan. Pre-orders for the digital version are open as of November 2, 2023. The PS4 and PS5 versions will come out some time in 2024.

Bandai Namco has ed a new trailer for Spy x Anya: Operation Memories. The video is just over two minutes long and shows off various aspects of the gameplay, as well as which characters from the series will appear in the game. The trailer has English subtitles for international viewers.

The game's plot revolves around Anya making a photo diary for school. She wants the project to be a success so that she can show it off to Damian with the hopes of befriending him to help Loid with Operation Strix. To complete her task, Anya has to complete various activities to make interesting diary entries. Most of the game centers around Anya spending time with the Forger family and friends at home and around town. You can also take pictures and save them in her photo diary.

In of its gameplay, Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is rather similar to games like Natsuyasumi. While there is an overarching story, it’s a playable slice of life adventure. There will also be mini-games, with local 2-player , and customization items that you can get for the of the Forger family.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories will come out on the PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2024. The Japanese version of the game will come out first on December 21, 2023.

Bandai Namco has updated the Japanese website for Spy x Anya: Operation Memories, which is alternatively known in Japan as Spy x Family: Operation Diary. It revealed that the Spy x Family video game starring Anya Forger will appear first on Nintendo Switch in Japan in late December 2023.

As the English title implies, the game will focus on Anya Forger as she tries to complete her picture diary. She will attend school on weekdays and go on family outings on weekends. For the latter, there will be 10 locations available to visit, ranging from parks and beaches to museums and hotels.

Spy x Anya will feature 17 mini-games, 10 of which will local 2-player mode. The mini-games will range from Anya's schoolday activities and family weekend outings to the more serious scenes like Loid's espionage jobs and Yor's assassin actions. The game will also have over 80 customization items consisting of clothing, hairstyles, and accessories for Anya, Loid, Yor, and Bond.

Spy x Anya: Operation Memories will be available first for Nintendo Switch in Japan on December 21, 2023. The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 releases will follow later in 2024. Shortly after the game's reveal at the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, Bandai Namco Entertainment America also confirmed a PC version. However, the Japanese website has yet to mention the latter as of September 2023.

During the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, a Spy x Family Switch game called Spy x Anya: Operation Memories appeared. This will be a slice of life sort of game. Players will follow Anya and help her fill up a diary with experiences for school. After the Direct, Bandai Namco announced it would head to the PS4, PS5, and PC as well.

Here's the first trailer for the game. It begins with Anya talking to her friend Becky about how she's going to make a "super-duper awesome" diary. We then see her both in school and at home with her “parents” Loid and Yor. She goes to different places with her family to get photographs of events. A card game with Damian also appears at one point in this first trailer. The voice over notes this will have life sim elements as you go through the days and weeks, with players influencing the diary Anya "creates" by the time it is all done.

The Spy x Anya: Operation Memories Spy x Family Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC game will come out worldwide sometime in 2024. Viz Media handles the release of the manga outside Japan. The first season of the anime is available on Crunchyroll. The Spy x Family: Code White movie and season 2 are in development and on the way, with the film coming to Japan on December 22, 2023.
