Earlier in May 2025, Tookyo Games, DMM Games, Exnoa, and Spike Chunsoft teased a new game called Shuten Order, and now we know it will launch on September 5, 2025. The Steam page is live, and the full game will debut on the Switch and PC. A Digital Deluxe Edition will also appear with art book and soundtrack.

The world is ending, and a Shuten Order cult appeared once people realized their fate. With 168 days left, the nation state Shuten founded by the group is plunged into chaos after the leader’s death. That’s where we come in, as we play as the revived head of the group now tasked with finding out who killed him in four days. This means going through five routes, each investigating a different minister in the group and playing differently to find the murderer. So the Ministry of Education is a dating sim, Ministry of Health is an escape room game like 999, Ministry of Justice is an adventure game like Ace Attorney, Ministry of Science is a visual novel, and Ministry of Security is described as “stealth action horror.” Beating all five is necessary to see the end.

This means we’ll see two Tookyo Games in 2025. The other is The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, which featured input from Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi. That appeared on the Switch and PC.

Shuten Order will come to the Switch and PC on September 5, 2025.

New No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: The Somnium Files Trailer Appears

Spike Chunsoft shared a new No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: The Somnium Files trailer in Japan, and it seems to show some opening footage with main characters Kaname Date, Iris “A-Set” Sagan, and Aiba. It offers a longer look at some scenes from the game, as well as seems to set up the new investigation and adventure. While it’s the third game in the series, chronologically it takes place after the first and before parts of the second

In No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: The Somnium Files, we’re dealing with multiple, potentially connected, scenarios. Iris, a young woman who appeared in multiple installments and rose to fame as a streamer and influencer, is kidnapped. In the first half of the new video, we see her captive in a room and crying out for help. In the second, we see Date on the road and discussing what’s next with Aiba.

Here’s the full video. It’s only available in Japanese at the moment, and there are no English captions available.

ever 17 never 7

Hailed as one of the best Japanese video games of all time, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is set to exhilarate readers once again on modern consoles, along with, for the first time in English, its prequel Never 7: The End of Infinity. Despite the dated visuals and humor, the story for both games hold up well. However, it might take someone with no emotional connection to the series a while to warm up to them thanks to the slow pacing.

As a disclaimer, I’d like to put out that I did not play the original versions of either game. So I have no proper reference point for how the remaster compares. The 2025 remaster of Ever 17 uses the 2011 Xbox 360 remake’s script, though it preserves the 2D visuals of the initial PS2 and Dreamcast releases. This script also introduced some changes to the characters and story. But since, again, I never experienced the actual original version, I have little of an opinion on how this affects the enjoyment of someone who’d been a fan of the Infinity series since the turn of the century.

Both Never 7 and Ever 17 are visual novels that advance via text and voice-acting, with accompanying character sprites and occasional stills. Player input is limited to the occasional dialogue option. Choices range from the mundane (a slight change to a character’s reply) to the drastic (which character you play as). If you prefer visual novels where your choices have more direct consequences, or ones that feature more active gameplay, these aren’t for you. Thanks to the all-star cast and their phenomenal performances, though, the games can pull you into the story quite well, which can stave off the monotony of reading for hours on end.

While both stories have different plots and focal themes, they center around the protagonist trapped in a situation (a time loop in Never 7 and an underwater facility in Ever 17) and trying to escape while deepening their bonds with the people around them. In Ever 17, you play as either Takeshi Kuranari or “Kid,” a boy with amnesia. They’re both visiting the water park of LeMU when a leak traps them in the underwater portions of the facility. With only 119 hours until the facility implodes, they, along with other stragglers, need to find a way to either escape or the surface for assistance.

Meanwhile, in Never 7, you take on the role of Makoto Ishihara. He’s a university student who’s at a seminar resort with three other classmates. It doesn’t take them long to befriend some locals of the island town they’re staying in. Throughout the week, Makoto experiences precognitive flashes. At times, he just "knows" things he logically shouldn't. Other times, he sees a vision of disaster, with said disaster taking place moments later. Throughout the week, Makoto grows close with with one the girls in his new friend group. However, the girl usually dies, and he finds himself back at the start of the loop. Using his knowledge of the future, he seeks to prevent said death from occurring.

Both games feature a deep and gripping sci-fi story, though Ever 17 leans into it far more than Never 7 does. Never 7 can take a few detours into exploring Makoto's romantic escapades with the heroine of the given route, which can get frustrating if you’re not really interested in that particular aspect of the story. Though both games have you retreading familiar ground multiple times, they make it easy to return to forks in the story, so you can explore other routes and options. I really appreciated this, considering how long each game is.

There’s a nostalgic charm in how dated everything feels, especially in character sprites. The proportions and poses can be unapologetically wonky in a way I seldom see in modern games. Playing on the Switch in handheld mode, the presentation didn't look too bad, though a much larger screen may reveal flaws. At times, the artwork can straddle the line between "bad but charmingly earnest" to straight up "bad," but that's not something Mages can fix, I suppose. The age of the game doesn't affect the quality of the story, at least. I’m impressed at how the twists took me by surprise, considering these games are two decades old. So many sci-fi visual novels came out since then, and yet, certain revelations about the story or characters felt refreshing and creative. I can understand why these games still hold a special place in people’s hearts.

That being said, the dated nature of the games isn’t always positive. The writing, both the localization and the original text, feel like looking at time capsules from the past. It took me a long time to warm up to Ever 17, as You’s interactions with Takeshi were so off-putting to me. I’m personally not a fan of this type of Rumiko Takahashi-esque slapstick humor. In the early hours of the group’s time in underwater LeMU, they’re so unnecessarily mean to Takeshi for comic relief that I kept having to pause and do something else because I just didn’t want to read it anymore. Granted, we still see this kind of humor today.

Another reason for my initial aversion to You had to do with her being the group’s walking encyclopedia. Uchikoshi likes to use her to slip in asides on history, mythology, and anthropology. Interesting, for sure. But You’s explanations are so long and detailed in the dialogue that I dreaded seeing her anywhere on my screen, especially when not everything she brought up had to do with the story. This might be why I took less issue with Never 7’s pacing, as Ever 17 already gave me an idea on what to expect.

ever 17 never 7 localization
Screenshot by Siliconera

Speaking of Never 7, I didn't realize until later that this remaster is the first time it got localized. It bucks modern conventions in localization, which made me believe it, too, used a script from long ago. Like with Ever 17, it doesn’t bother to censor out any old-fashioned assumptions about gender that another studio might have to line up with Western sensibilities. It's a faithful adaptation of the Japanese script, but to the point that it had a negative impact on how comprehensible it is. Within my first two hours of Never 7, I had to replay the Japanese voice-over in a conversation since the translation for the line, while 100% accurate to the Japanese, felt like a non sequitur. Just because something is the literal translation doesn't mean it's the optimal one.

The “Kid” in Ever 17 is also an interesting oddity in the localization. “Kid” is the temporary name the characters christen the amnesiac boy with. When you play from his perspective, though, the text box for his name reads “Boy.” After doing some research, it turns out that this is what the original version of the English script referred to him as. I’m not quite sure why they decided to change it. When they did, though, they must have used Find and Replace to change all instances of “Boy” to “Kid.” Now, I can totally empathize with this. But when it’s a word as common as “kid,” you end up with some funny mistakes, like “kidding” becoming “Kidding” in the middle of a sentence.

As a fellow translator, I can appreciate how much text they must've had to go through, and can only hope the localization team had a healthy turnaround time. That being said, in the case of Ever 17, there are so many little issues that I thought a remaster would fix. Never 7, too, didn't quite read like a visual novel I expected in 2025 (I know the game is old, but the localization is new, ?). The above issue with "Kid," for example, seems like an odd thing to leave in. When a story relies heavily on text to lay the groundwork for later twists, mistakes like putting Sara at a scene when she physically wasn't even there can lead to unnecessary confusion down the line.

As for the performances of the remasters, the port on the Switch ran fine for both games. I didn’t encounter any bugs or issues. Being able to advance the text with either the analog stick or the A button was very convenient, as it gave my right thumb a break during long sessions. Since these games are long, the portability is great since this means you can play them on the go. If you can play it with a proper sound system, I would recommend that. The games’ main selling points are the music and the voice-acting. The speakers on the Switch in handheld mode didn’t do them justice.

To be frank, while I appreciated the complex yarn Uchikoshi wove, I wouldn’t say Ever 17 or Never 7 are visual novels for everyone. It takes such a long time to get to the meat of the story that “It gets good, I promise” might not be enough for people with busy schedules. Going into these games knowing that critics and fans in the past considered them (especially Ever 17) absolute masterpieces of their time ended up highlighting the negative qualities for me. That being said, despite not particularly liking any character, I still felt genuine worry, joy, and relief for them throughout their adventures. It surprised me just how much I'd grown to care about everyone without ever noticing. To inspire such emotions, as well as the bittersweet sense of accomplishment upon reaching the various endings, is a testament to Uchikoshi’s mastery of his craft.

Ever 17 and Never 7 are out on the PS4, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Visual novels are getting a real treat with the remasters of Ever 17 and Never 7. These beloved games from developer KID and legendary writer Kotaro Uchikoshi are both must-plays, especially in the case of the former. With these now almost here, and possibly so by the time you read this, it is time to look ahead. What visual novel deserves a remaster or remake next?

Well, the Siliconera staff has come together to give our thoughts on the visual novels we would like to see get a remaster or remake next.

Well. We already got Fate/stay Night and Tsukihime. I'm going to go with a deep otome cut. Let's see Idea Factory and Otomate bring back Sweet Fuse! It's too good to be trapped on the PSP! -- Jenni

Give me 12Riven! I have wanted to play this game for so long but never have been able to. It’s time for an official English translation of it. Besides that, 11 feels like a lock in the future. It is one of my favorite visual novels of all time and it is quite spooky, too, at times. There are some surprisingly scary moments at that game and it certainly deserves more attention than it got at the time. While Ever 17 is certainly the more flawlessly written experience, I actually prefer 11 for its atmosphere and characters. The directions this one goes in are incredible and deserve a wider audience’s attention.

Finally, I’d like to give a special shoutout to Time Travelers. This Level-5 cinematic visual novel is remarkable, but it only ever released in Japan on Nintendo 3DS for some odd reason. This feels like an easy win to remaster for modern platforms with an official localization, so hopefully it happens at some point. Thankfully, there is an unofficial English translation for now. -- Cody

The newest Danganronpa bunny girl scale figure is of Celestia Ludenberg, who debuted in the original game.

The next Danganronpa bunny girl figure arrives in 2025, and it will be a new take on Celestia Ludenberg. Good Smile Company announced it will debut in Japan in September 2025, and it will cost ¥39,600 when it does. It’ll be $310.99 in the US, and it is expected to appear everywhere by Q1 2026.

The reason for the high cost is that this is a 1/4 scale figure, compared to the 1/7 and 1/8 ones we typically see. This means she’ll be over 10 inches tall. (That’s about 260mm.) It is a static figure with no additional face plates or accessories for posing purposes. Her bunny girl outfit does look slightly different than others in the line, to accentuate the fact that she always tended to wear Gothic Lolita clothing in the game. She also holds a Joker playing card, as a nod to her role as the Ultimate Gambler. The fishnet stockings she wears are made of real fabric as well.

Here’s a closer look at how this version of Celestia should look when the figure launches.

There are already multiple Danganronpa figures in this bunny girl line. In 2023, Chiaki Nanami, Junko Enoshima, Kaede Akamatsu, and Kyoko Kirigiri came up. The Chiako one appeared in both black and white outfits. The latest promotional image from Good Smile Company on the product page alongside the Celestia reveal showed there will be a Mikan Tsumiki figure in the collection too.

The Danganronpa Celestia Ludenberg bunny girl figure will launch in September 2025. Pre-orders are open until March 26, 2025. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is available on the PS4, PSP, Vita, Switch, Xbox One, PC, and mobile devices.

Danganronpa character collaboration at Karaoke Manekineko

A Danganronpa collaboration campaign will appear at Karaoke Manekineko outlets across Japan throughout Q1 2025. The karaoke outlet chain will hold the event from late January 2025 until early March 2025.

The primary highlight of the campaign will be special karaoke rooms decorated with Danganronpa series characters. These rooms will exclusively appear at two of Manekineko's outlets at Ikebukuro Sunshine in Tokyo and Nankai in Osaka.

Most of Manekineko's other outlets across Japan will also sell Danganronpa-themed merchandise and drinks for the duration of the event. However, it will only allow people who are also using the karaoke services to make the purchases.

The non-alcoholic drinks themed after mainline Danganronpa entries will be available at 660 yen per cup. However, Manekineko will not allow takeaways so customers must drink them inside the karaoke rooms. The ingredients used for each drink are as follows:

  • Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc drink - Crushed jelly and Guava syrup with carbonated or regular water
  • Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair drink - Mango syrup with Calpis
  • Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony drink - Blue Hawaii syrup with Ginger ale

There has been an increase in Danganronpa series merchandise and collaboration as we enter 2025. The first title Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc originally appeared for the PSP in Japan on November 25, 2010, so 2025 will have the series' 15th anniversary. Earlier in January 2025, Dragonhorse revealed that it will release Fanthful-branded merchandise based on Danganronpa series characters in April 2025.

The Danganronpa collaboration campaign will run at Karaoke Manekineko outlets across Japan from January 29, 2025, until March 9, 2025.

A long time has ed since a new mainline Danganronpa game has been released. Sadly, it doesn’t look like one is happening anytime soon, either. With , similar titles from creator Kazutaka Kodaka like The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy on the horizon, it appears this series is indefinitely on hold. This is likely due to a number of factors, such as the infamous Danganronpa V3 ending, which shouldn’t stop new Danganronpa games.

I will try my best to avoid spoilers, but it is pretty much inevitable. As such, if you have yet to finish Danganronpa V3, this is your chance to walk away and come back later. Still here? Well, the ending is controversial for a reason. It upends this entire series in more ways than one, but namely because of the many lies.

Image via Spike Chunsoft

As we find out, pretty much everything we knew about the series was a blatant lie or at least somewhat fake. The characters existed and participated in these games, but with fake personas. It is an intriguing commentary on the fans and the series, and one I’ve grown to appreciate in the years since. But the ending seemed to put a cap on the series.

After all, what is the point now that we know the truth? But I beg to differ. I feel like this series ended just as it was getting started. V3, and even the second game before it, did a lot to deconstruct and surprise players. Characters you might expect to be evil died while the more innocent “main characters” turned out to be killers. Despite these wonderful twists, such as the Kaede and Chiaki ones, there was still so much room for new turns.

For instance, what if a new game didn’t go the whole multiple survivors route? It would be a shock to have only the protagonist survive or, dare I say it, finish the final case by trying to get away with murder. This would be a fascinating twist on the courtroom sessions.

Alternatively, what about a game with multiple endings? Here, you could make choices that determine what conclusion you get. Maybe befriending a possible killer in one route results in multiple survivors, while alienating that Nagito or Ouma-like person results in them pinning a murder on you and walking away as the winner. Or they could even finish you off as their victim.

These are just a few options for a new Danganronpa. I’m not even bringing up the amazing character options. Think of all the Ultimates we haven’t seen yet. There is almost limitless potential for where the series goes next. In fact, I think it is better to look at the V3 ending this way.

For one, Spike Chunsoft and Kodaka (or a new team) could opt for a fresh reboot. Scratch the entire ending and start over with a new class and no expectations. Or, heck, set it in a new universe and move on to Ultimate university students. Another option would be to fill in the gaps between games.

Spoiler warning once more, but we now know the most recent game is actually the 53rd game in the universe. That means there are about 50 different games we haven’t played yet. That is an unbelievable amount of content to go back and look at. Could we see Rantaro’s game, for example? Or just a fresh case without any strings attached. This would even be the chance for them to go ahead and call a game Danganronpa 4 and show the fourth game.

Finally, there is the big one. What if we just got a direct sequel to Danganronpa V3? I know that sounds ridiculous with the ending, but there is nothing to hide now. The games can continue onward as they were. This time, though, we know the truth about the matter.

This route gives a lot of possibilities for how Spike can play with the characters and story. We can have more deranged students, such as someone who keeps switching between their old personality and their new, fake one. We could get to know the people behind the actual broadcasted game, not the weird Junko despair mess.

If anything, this gives the team a chance to avoid the pitfalls of the original trilogy. Instead of connecting all three games like before, just give us standalone experiences that are one and done death games. This leaves the room open for anything to happen. Whatever the case is, I sincerely Danganronpa V3 isn’t the ending for this series and we do get new Danganronpa games at some point.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was a solid distraction in 2023, but it fell just a tad short of what I want to see. And then there is The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. After how much I hated the unnecessary battles in a story-driven game like 13 Sentinels, I expect this to be a similar situation. These fun diversions are exciting to try out, but I hope Kodaka gives us a new Danganronpa game sooner rather than later.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is available for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Vita, Xbox One, and PC.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Patch Nerfs Yajirobe, May Corrupt Save Data

Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft nerfed Yajirobe and made his power levels fall more in line with what was intended with an October 24, 2024 Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero patch, but in so doing added other errors like a corrupted save data issue. The official social media noted the companies are aware of problems and working on them.

As a reminder, the issues fixed in this Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero patch did more than rebalance Yajirobe, but also addressed Episode Battle difficulty, fixed classic controls, and made the game more stable. In particular, it adjusted the easier difficulty options when going through the story solo. Yajirobe isn’t a phenom anymore. The classic control scheme should work online now.

The Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero patch problems, similarly, run deeper than just corrupted save data. People are experiencing a number of problems tied to gameplay and online multiplayer. Some are reporting problems with using their saves. Others say their character rank is now 0. It seems online multiplayer is also affected and not working as intended. There’s no note as to when those problems could be fixed, and Bandai Namco didn’t share any tips for dealing with that issue now. Also, as usual, people lost battle replays when the patch went through.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is available for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.

Horror games are so iconic. Few games immerse the player in an evocative and memorable world as well as horror titles. Famous, classic Japanese horror series like Resident Evil and Silent Hill keep putting out games. In fact, the recent release of Silent Hill 2 shows there is plenty of room for more horror remakes. This are our picks for the classic horror games that need a sequel or remake next.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Horror Games That Need a Remake or Sequel 602v4s

I'm kind of loathe to think of Siren: Blood Curse as a remake of the original game since it's SO different in of…well, everything. It's more a reimagination, really. While a much more faithful remake of Siren would be nice, I'm one of those people who believe that if you're going to play it, you should play the original, horrible, janky version and get that true frustrating experience. It's part of the charm. -- Stephanie (1/2)

Siren 2, on the other hand, seemed to have genuinely wanted to provide some quality-of-life upgrades. As such, it would be nice to see a proper remake of that one. Heck, a Siren 3 that's similar to the first two in of gameplay and writing would be great too. It might be difficult though, since the main creative team for Siren seem to be at Bokeh Game Studio now and I don't know who even has the rights to the IP anymore. -- Stephanie (2/2)

I have to agree with Stephanie. Siren should come back. It's such a memorable story, and the gameplay was so unusual and different. It genuinely felt desperate and horrifying when you knew the Shibito were everywhere, you were outnumbered, and it would be so easy to panic and slip up. -- Jenni

I’m a wimp when it comes to horror games so I mostly stick to visual novels. Though not outright horror games, I keep hoping and praying for new games in the Zero Escape and Danganronpa series. They both have light spooky elements, especially 999 with the “knocking” part that actually made me jump when I first played it. Both series made me fall in love with the visual novel genre and I just need more of both. This is particularly painful for Zero Escape since I will stand by that Zero Time Dilemma’s most horrifying part was its terribly unfinished ending that needs a sequel someday. -- Cody

Danganronpa Kyoko Kirigiri Nendoroid - global pre-orders opened

Good Smile Company has opened worldwide pre-orders for its Nendoroid of Kyoko Kirigiri from Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa series. People can place orders for the new chibi action figure on its Japanese international website at ¥6,800. Those who reside in the U.S. and Canada can instead head to Good Smile Online Shop U.S., where the same product is available at $43.99.

Earlier in October 2024, the company shared a sample image of the Nendoroid prototype that has been fully painted. However, it did not reveal the chibi figure's pre-order and release windows prior to today's announcement. The figure will now appear worldwide in 2025, although North America will get it later in the final quarter of the year.

With pre-orders for the Nendoroid now available, Good Smile Company has also published more sample images that show the items that it will include in the set. It will have three facial expression parts for Kyoko: a normal face, a blushing face, and a serious face that depicts her talking during an interrogation session.

The set will also come with Cup Gokubuto noodles that the owner can actually splash on her head. People who order the Kyoko Kirigiri Nendoroid set on Good Smile Company's web stores can also receive a bonus exclusive base that features the Japanese Danganronpa logo and the name "Kirigiri Kyouko" written in katakana.

Here's a closer look at the new Nendoroid:

Good Smile Company will close the pre-order window for the Danganronpa Nendoroid of Kyoko Kirigiri on November 20, 2024. It will start shipping the finished figures from Japan in May 2025 and North America in Q4 2025.
