More layoffs have been confirmed at Sony, as reports came in that the company fired multiple staff from PlayStation studio Visual Arts. It’s currently unknown how many people have been affected and let go from their positions. [Thanks, Kotaku!]

Confirmation on the Visual Arts layoffs came from posts from the affected staff on LinkedIn. Abby LeMaster, a former project manager at the studio who now works for Riot, expressed her condolences while sharing several of these posts on her feed. Many of the affected staff appear to have been working with Bend Studio on its recently canceled live service game, widely believed to be a God of War spin-off. However, the layoffs appear to be broader than these projects.

These layoffs come during a major restructure at PlayStation, even outside Visual Arts. As well as recent reorganization in management following the departure of Jim Ryan, efforts are being made to cut back increasing budgets. A big part of these changes have seen the company’s twelve in-development live service games severely cut back following the failure of Concord. The developer of that game was also closed down in October 2024.

Layoffs continue to be an ongoing problem within the games industry. Even the success of Marvel Rivals failed to stop staff at NetEase Games facing layoffs. The entire US team, who helped complete development of the base game, appears to have been axed.

It is unknown if these layoffs will affect development of other Sony games. Current known first-party games in development include Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, and the new Naughty Dog game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

PS3 New Update

Sony released a new firmware update for the PS3. This is despite the console being discontinued in 2016.

While Sony’s site has limited information on what the new PS3 update contains, there are some brief notes about what to expect from the firmware. However, it is likely to be a simply update to the system’s Blu-Ray encryption key. This is due to a note saying that s are required to install Version 4.92 in order to continue playing Blu-Ray discs. Other than this, the update exists to “improve system performance” although Sony has not elaborated on this further.

It may seem strange for the PS3 to receive a new update nearly 20 years after its release, and almost 10 years after its discontinuation in 2016. However, the encryption key needs to be renewed on an annual basis in order to continue playing Blu-Ray discs. This only affects standard Blu-Ray releases and does not affect PS3 games. This is only an issue on the PS3 as the PS4 and PS5 both automatically update their encryption keys.

While Sony are still updating a past system, they’ve also opened a new program that looks to the future. The PlayStation beta program recently opened, allowing those who sign up to playtest PS5 games. New system features will also be included in these playtests.

The new PS3 update can be ed now, despite the system being discontinued in 2016.

Lego Horizon Playset

Sony and Lego are teaming up to release the first playset based on Lego Horizon Adventures. The playset, which is called Aloy & Varl vs Shell-Walker & Sawtooth, is set to release on March 1, 2025. The playset is currently available to pre-order from the official Lego site. It will cost $44.99.

The new Lego Horizon Adventures playset features two machines, which are the Shell-Walker and Sawtooth. The Shell-Walker is a crab-like machine that is used to transport materials around. It’s recognizable for its prominent shell container and shield. The Sawtooth is a machine similar to a big cat that is one of Horizon’s more aggressive machines. It was first seen in Horizon Zero Dawn when the player is taught how to use a Tripcaster. The playset also comes with minifigs of Horizon protagonist Aloy and Varl, a fellow Nora tribesman who assists Aloy on her adventures.

Here are some images of the playset:

The PlayStation Blog features a video discussing the process of deg the Lego Horizon Adventures playset, as designers from both Lego and Guerrilla collaborated to make the machines work in Lego form. They explain that the machines were chosen as they were favorites of the designers.

The set is primarily based on the Lego Horizon Adventures game, which released in 2024 and featured a more family-friendly take on Horizon Zero Dawn. However, this was not the first time Sony and Lego collaborated on a project. A Tallneck was previously released as an adult set. That is still available now.

The Lego Horizon Adventures Aloy & Varl vs Shell-Walker & Sawtooth playset is set to release on March 1, 2025. Lego Horizon Adventures is out now for PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Until Dawn Movie

Sony revealed a new trailer for the Until Dawn movie adaptation. The movie is set to release in theaters on April 25, 2025.

Despite the game’s premise being based heavily on slasher movies, the Until Dawn movie will not be a straight adaptation of the story. Instead, it will take the concept of player choice as its central theme, as a group of friends find themselves repeating the same night over. Each night they are stalked by a different killer who they must escape from.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZfwvLe961k

Due to this premise, there’s not a lot in the trailer that will be familiar to Until Dawn fans. The most prominent elements are the psychiatrist character played by Peter Stormare and one of the killers wearing the same mask as the game’s Psycho. Otherwise, this is an entirely original story set in the same universe.

Along with Peter Stormare reprising his role, the Until Dawn movie stars Ella Rubin, Maia Mitchell and Michael Cimino. It was written by Blair Butler (The Invitation) and Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home, It), and directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam). The movie follows the release of the Until Dawn remake in October 2024.

The Until Dawn movie will release in theaters on April 25, 2025.

PlayStation 30th Anniversary themes on PS5

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will remove the legacy PlayStation console themes on the PS5, which made for the platform's 30th anniversary, on February 1, 2025. However, the company also teased that it may bring back the themes in a few more months after receiving a lot of positive from s.

For the record, SIE originally added the temporary themes for the PS5 in late 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of the first PlayStation console, which first launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. The four themes are respectively themed after the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. The PS1 theme, for example, shows a boot scene reminiscent of the original console with the old Sony Computer Entertainment logo shown at the beginning.

Here is the official tweet posted on the Japanese PlayStation on X:

https://twitter.com/PlayStation_jp/status/1885120895137833384

And here is our translation of the tweet:

We have received a lot of responses to the time-limited themes modeled after the first PlayStation, the PS2, the PS3, and the PS4. Thank you!

We will cease providing these 4 themes tomorrow on Saturday, February 1. But after receiving positive receptions from everyone, we will work on the development to make it possible to once again provide these specially-designed themes within a few more months.

SIE also released a limited number of PS5 consoles, DualSense controllers, and PS Portals themed after the PS1 to celebrate its 30th anniversary. In addition, the same company worked with Grapht to produce and release PS1-themed merchandise for its major anniversary milestone, which ranged from a tote bag to keychains.

The legacy PlayStation console themes on the PlayStation 5 will disappear on February 1, 2025, but Sony Interactive Entertainment has promised to bring the themes back in the near future.

Review: Freedom Wars Remastered Deserves A Second Chance

If anyone had asked me about the possibility of a Freedom Wars Remastered release during the last decade, I wouldn’t have put my money on it. Yet this fascinating oddity of a game is now getting a new lease on life. For those unfamiliar, Freedom Wars is a mission-based action RPG with a particular and bold aesthetic, as well as a Sony first-party title developed by Dimps and released all the way back in 2014 exclusively on the PlayStation Vita Vita. But now, it's showing up on modern consoles and PCs.

Freedom Wars Remastered is set in a distant future where humanity lives imprisoned penal city-states called Panopticons. In these Panopticons, humanity is divided between regular citizens and sinners, people that have been condemned with 1,000,000 years of imprisonment for the crime of being alive. The player character is one such sinners that happens to lose their memories at the start of the game, forcing the Panopticon to reset their sentence to a million. Sinners are forced to “volunteer” in warfare with other rival Panopticons to gain resources or kidnap valuable citizens to perform labor.

The core conceit of the game sounds more melodramatic than it ends up being. While the game evokes images of prison and penitentiary life, it doesn’t take long after the introduction for Freedom Wars to give a different image from its seemingly dour premise. Sinners lead relatively normal lives and increasing your sentence doesn’t change much, other than serving as flavor text. Furthermore, the amnesia plot serves as a device to provide an explanation to the player and introduce them to the world of the game.

First and foremost, Freedom Wars Remastered is a portable game, and this is felt all throughout its pacing. The game starts with some basic tutorials, lengthy dialogue, and light “exploration” stages. I put exploration in quotations because it is apparent very quickly that areas in the main hub of your player-chosen Panopticon are recycled and identical, with very little variation until later into the game. Similarly, worldbuilding and story rely heavily on short, but constant, character exposition in between main story missions. While I didn’t mind this back in 2014 on the Vita, I found it to be a bit obtrusive playing for longer sessions on my PC. Particularly the Cell Garden infiltration sections felt too repetitive, despite there only being a handful.

Luckily, the pacing issues only exist during the first few hours. Once you learn the ropes, the game consistently gives you missions where you deploy with up to three party and are tasked with different objectives. These vary between defeating all enemies, whether it is rival Sinners or Abductors, giant machines that Panopticons employ to wage war; rescue citizens from your rivals, or domination missions in the style of “capture the flag.” Again, because of its origins as a portable 2014 game, there isn’t a lot of mission variety. However, I didn’t mind this, as the main attraction is the Abductor fights. The variety of Abductor types isn’t massive either. Freedom Wars Remastered makes up for it by starting with fights against one, and increasing the number of Abductors and combinations of them you need to fight at the same time, or even having several of them in waves, or interspersed with waves of Sinners. This distinguishes the game from series like Monster Hunter or God Eater, where the focus lies on a single big spectacle fight.

And, in spite of all of its limitations as a portable title, Freedom Wars Remastered has really engaging combat. The player character can carry two weapons at a type, being able to choose between melee equipment such as one-handed, two-handed weapons, and polearms; as well as firearms in the form of assault weapons, portable artillery, and autocannons. Each melee weapon type has its own moveset, with some of them excelling at severing abductor parts, dealing critical hits, or other specialty. I gravitated towards light melee weapon and polearms for my melee choice favoring the Hawkshadow, and Barbara's Easy Blaster as my firearm of choice. While practice battles are available to try your moveset in a safe environment, for this remaster I would have liked having the option to change weapons on the fly during these practice missions so you could easily find your favorite combination of weapons.

And yet, my favorite inclusion to the gameplay is the thorn system. Sinners are capable of using a grappling hook-like tool called the Thorn. It is a useful system to traverse the arenas and maps, to drag down enemy Abductors, or even to connect with enemy Sinners for a powerful dash combo. This mechanic is simple but deceptively deep, granting the game a powerful layer of aerial combat and combo opportunities. Thorns come in Binding, Healing, and Shielding varieties, each with unique properties such as the ability to enhance defense, heal allies, or stun enemies. Sinners are also accompanied by an Accessory, a robotic ally that fights and offers in the battlefield.

As a remaster of a decade-old game, Freedom Wars Remastered adds some subtle but meaningful changes, with the inclusion of some fascinating elements that never made it to the original American or European releases. First of all, the movement speed feels much faster and responsive now. Maps are not particularly big, and traversing them with the Thorn is pretty easy, but this increase in maneuverability is great to dodge and avoid damage in fights with lots of moving parts. Additionally, the unique voice synthesizer editor system used for Accessories in the original Japanese release finally made it overseas. This allows players to create their own unique responses to orders or gameplay actions, such as asking your Accessory to take care of rescuing citizens.

My only real problem with this version of the game is the inclusion of Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) for the PC release of the game. Depending on each player's PC, this might or might not be a problem for some. For me, EAC resulted in an unstable performance and drastic framerate drops, despite having a pretty powerful rig. I was able to fix this issue quickly due to having had this problem before with EAC and knowing how to deal with it, but this resulted in the game crashing approximately every hour and a half.

The generous use of auto-save ensured that I never lost progress, but this was a considerable inconvenience for the first 4-5 hours of playtime. And at around 10 hours of playtime in my approximately 22-hour playthrough of the main campaign, the framerate issues stopped completely and I was able to play normally. I would advise to keep an eye out in case you've ever experienced similar issues with other games that use EAC. The game is still absolutely worth it, but you might want to give it a try on console. On the other side, performance on the Steam Deck was silky smooth and it game me no problem.

Over a decade after its release, Freedom Wars Remastered remains a competent action RPG with a surprisingly engaging gameplay loop and complex combat system. Noticing the seams of a PS Vita portable game will be unavoidable even in this remaster, but it has a certain charm to it. Perhaps the story is not the most highbrow out there, but the aesthetic and purposeful odd vibe of the Panopticons are pretty unique and attractive. While I was unable to try the multiplayer, I plan on putting more hours into the game and jump into the post-game missions with friends, trying to reduce my sentence to 0, and maybe give the PvP modes a chance. If you enjoy mission-based action RPGs, this is an absolute classic.

Freedom Wars Remastered will come out on January 10, 2025 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

January PlayStation Plus Games

Sony revealed the first PlayStation Plus monthly games for 2025 with the January selection, and the lineup includes the live-service Suicide Squad title. The new trio of games will be available for all subscribers from January 7, 2025.

The three games available for PlayStation Plus in January 2025 will be led by Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This is Rocksteady’s experiment with creating a live service game, as Harley Quinn and associates set out to take down various of the Justice League. Just be aware when you jump into this one that development on the game will officially end on January 14, 2025 and no further updates will be added. This game is exclusively available for subscribers on PS5.

Meanwhile, the other two January 2025 PlayStation Plus games include Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is the 2010 edition of EA’s long-running street racing series. The version for PS Plus will be the PS4 remaster released for the game’s tenth anniversary.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is famously bizarre metanarrative indie game where you play as an office worker named Stanley trying to defy an omnipresent narrator. Ultra Deluxe features a ton of additional content not seen in the original game. It’s available for both PS4 and PS5.

December’s selection of PlayStation Plus games are currently still available. These included It Takes Two, Aliens: Dark Descent and Temtem. They will be available until the release of the January selection of games.

Astro Bot Christmas Level

Team Asobi has announced that a Christmas level called Winter Wonder will be added to Astro Bot in a free update to celebrate the holiday. It will be added to the game on December 12, 2024, during The Game Awards 2024.

The new Astro Bot level will be called Winter Wonder. While Team Asobi are staying quiet about what players can find in the level, they have provided a screenshot of the level’s opening fly-in. The level appears to be based on a small snowy town with a Christmas tree at the center. The team has promised that more new bots can be found in the level, although they’re keeping their identities a secret for now.

While the new bots featured in Winter Wonder are unknown, fans have some theories based on copyright information found in the game’s credits, representing games that do not currently appear in the game. These include Worms, Croc and three Ubisoft properties: Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil and Assassin’s Creed. Copyright information for Tomba! was also recently added, further increasing speculation that a new bot based on the game is set to appear. Whether any of these will appear in the new level remains to be seen.

This Christmas level is the latest free content that’s been added to Astro Bot since the game released. During October and November, five speedrun levels were added, each bringing two new VIP bots based on other PlayStation games. These included four Helldivers, Cayde-6 from Destiny and Eve from Stellar Blade, among others.

Astro Bot is out now for PS5, and the Christmas level called Winter Wonder will release in a free update on December 12, 2024.
