At The Game Awards 2024, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio announced a new game currently referred to Project Century that looks like it could be another Yakuza spin-off. We got to see a new protagonist walk around a 1915 Japan, visiting some establishments and fighting some enemies.

The video begins first by showing off the city. We get to see period-specific music, clothing, buildings, and vehicles around the area. Our hero wanders among them. At times, the exploration seems peaceful. However, we also see him get into some bloody fights.

Here is the first Project Century trailer. The protagonist’s face appears at the end. No platforms are revealed, and there’s also no release window.

Period piece Yakuza games aren’t uncommon, so it is possible that Project Century could be a new one of those games. For example, Like a Dragon: Ishin involved 1860s Japan, with Kazuma Kiryu and other familiar faces playing new roles as of the Shinsengumi. There was also Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan. That took place in 1605 and, once again, had the characters we know and love in new roles.

However, it could also be an entirely new game that is a spin-off of the Yakuza series. This was the case with Kurohyo: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho. That PSP installment starred original protagonist Tatsuya Ukyo who gets involved with the Dragon Heat fight club, of sorts, after a run in with the Tojo Clan from the Like a Dragon series. It never appeared worldwide.

Project Century is in development.

Yakuza kiwami like a dragon switch

Yakuza is an iconic series. It’s gone from being lauded as one of Sega’s finest niche releases to one that inspires spin-offs, an Amazon show, and more mainstream acclaim. But it’s never found a place for itself on a Nintendo system. Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first Like a Dragon game, changes that, as Sega and Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio finally brought the game to the Nintendo Switch. It was worth waiting for, to be sure, as it is an irably done port of a wonderful game.

Given the nature of the Like a Dragon series, Yakuza Kiwami is very narrative-heavy in its first few chapters. This means that, due to all the cinematics and isolated area, it makes a good first impression. Kazuma Kiryu and his sworn brother Akira Nishikiyama are meeting at their favorite bar, Serena, to celebrate a friend named Yumi’s birthday. Kiryu is the Dojima Family’s feared Dragon of Dojima and on the verge of getting his  family. However, after Sohei Dojima assaults Yumi and Nishiki kills him for it, Kiryu takes the fall, is sent to prison, is expelled from the clan, and returns to Kamurocho 10 years later. Yumi is missing, as is 10 billion yen from the Tojo Clan, the third chairman Masaru Sera is dead, Nishiki is nothing like Kiryu re, and everyone seems to be after a little girl named Haruka. And so, Kiryu is immediately thrust into the politics of the underworld and protecting the child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa4LtKgIVtA&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

However, as this is a Like a Dragon game, Yakuza Kiwami isn’t limited to that. Over the 13 chapters, you discover the exact truth behind what’s happening in the Tojo clan, as well as what went on with Yumi and Nishiki. There is more to the story, thanks to elements that focus on what Nishiki went through. Goro Majima pops up more often for challenges and comic relief, thanks to the Majima Everywhere system that is also tied to the new Dragon Style that s the existing Beast, Brawler, and Rush ones. Not to mention, there are more Substories than before and you can take part in the MesuKing minigame. So you’re getting a full, thrilling adventure in a pretty large city with a lot of optional extra activities and sidequests.

My biggest concern heading into Yakuza Kiwami on the Switch involved combat. The system has always been so fluid, fast, and furious on other platforms. I was fairly certain smaller, more intimate fights would be fine. A one-on-one or maybe even three-on-one situation? Sure. fortunately, in the first few chapters of this installment Kiryu does find himself against hordes of enemies or bigger fights. These worked and felt fine on the Switch. The framerate seemed fairly consistent. To be frank, many fights that don’t involve a “boss” character go rather swiftly, so things would often wrap up before I had a chance to mentally note if the framerate seemed to dip.

The only real sacrifices I noticed to get the game running on the system involved visuals. Naturally, it doesn’t look as striking as it did when I played it on the PS4. Some textures while exploring Kamurocho didn’t look as sharp. I noticed occasional pop-ins at some spots for environmental objects around town. (For example, one of the first instances involved the trash at the end of the street when looking for the Suspicious Man hiding behind a sign.) I think I’d be tempted to say the Switch release of Yakuza Kiwami probably resembles the PS3 version of the Like a Dragon game more than the PS4 one, but at the end of the day it is fine.

Especially since in other areas, everything about Yakuza Kiwami is pretty great. The loading times are minimal, given the size and nature of the game. I expected it to take longer when going between areas and altercations, but nope! You’re all set in seconds. It’s easy to play and enjoy. The story is still fantastic. The Substories are still fun. I still love Pocket Circuit.

The Switch version of Yakuza Kiwami might not be the absolutely ideal way to play the first game in the Like a Dragon series, but it runs quite well on the system and remains an absolute delight. The port is quite capable and runs better than I expected to. It would probably look better on another console or PC, but the joy that comes from actually playing an entry on a Nintendo system and see it go so well more than makes up for that.

Yakuza Kiwami is available on the PS3 in Japan and on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC worldwide.

Yakuza Kiwami Switch

A Nintendo Switch version of Yakuza Kiwami, the first Like a Dragon game, is on the way, as announced at the Nintendo Indie World and Partner Showcase on August 27, 2024. The new version will launch for the Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024, ing versions already available on the PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Kiwami is a remake of the first Yakuza game, also known as the Ryu Ga Gotoku or Like a Dragon series, and it originally released in Japan back in 2016. The new Switch version looks to preserve all the features new and old, like the four different fighting styles, improvised weaponry, and Majima Everywhere system. The trailer also emphasized the game's well-known side stories and minigames, including baseball and Mahjong, or bonding with Kiryu's adoptive daughter Haruka.

You can watch the trailer from the Nintendo Direct via YouTube below:

Back in June, 2024, the entire Yakuza series for PC arrived on GOG's store, without any DRM packaged with it. Meanwhile, earlier this month the iconic song Baka Mitai received a vinyl release, sung by Kiryu's voice actor Takaya Kuroda.

Yakuza Kiwami will be the first Like a Dragon game on the Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024. The game is already available on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

How to Complete The Sexy Madam Substory in Like a Dragon: Ishin

After you get access to Gion in chapter 4 of Like a Dragon: Ishin, you can kick off a The Sexy Madam substory by talking with a woman in an elaborate kimono. She’s standing right after you walk into the district after crossing the Shijo Bridge in front of Kitchen Aoba. However, if you did some basic shopping early on in Fushimi, you probably already own what she needs.

The Sexy Madam in Like a Dragon: Ishin says that she wants a cucumber. While she specifies that she wants Ryoma Sakamoto’s cucumber, any one you can find will do. The Fushimi Green Grocer sells cucumbers among the other produce for 100 mon. If you pick one up, that will work to complete the substory. (If it is your first Green Grocer purchase, you'll also get a number of other items for free, like tomatoes.)

You will then get a Vitality Pill for bringing her a cucumber, as well as 150 Virtue. This also starts a bond relationship with her. You can also stop by later to increase the bond with her in the Diligence Records.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

How to Get to Mukurogai in Like a Dragon: Ishin

The first time you get to go to Mukurogai in Like a Dragon: Ishin, it will happen as part of the story. The game will guide you through the process of getting to this seedy sector. However, after that, it isn’t so simple. Once you’re in chapter 4, you need to go to specific places to gain access to this part of Kyo. Each time, you’ll have to pay a price.

If you’re in Fushimi, the quickest way is to stop by the ferryman in front of Komaki Dojo in Shinmachi. The ride will cost you 500 mon. This will also be the cheapest way into the area.

If you’re in Rakugai, the faster way is to use the bridge to get to Mukurogai in Like a Dragon: Ishin. However a “resident” NPC will be there and not let you in unless you get some alcohol from the Brewery on West Shijo Street in Rakugai. The cheapest drink there is the Itami Sake for 1,500 mon. Any kind of liquor will do.

So unless you’re really desperate to get to that sequestered section, it’s best if you wait until you’re in the Fushimi area to ensure a cheaper entrance fee.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

How to Earn Virtue in Like a Dragon: Ishin

Virtue is a valuable commodity in Like a Dragon: Ishin, and it’s something you need to earn in order to really make the most of some additional endeavors. Fortunately, it also is incredibly easy to accrue in-game. Once Ryoma Sakamoto finds himself in Kyo, basically everything he does starts earning him these “brownie points.” You can then spend those points to help with endeavors like farming, decorating your second home, and engaging in activities around Kyo. So if you’re just getting started, here’s what you need to know.

How to Earn Virtue in Like a Dragon: Ishin

How to Earn Virtue in Like a Dragon: Ishin i4p4w

Once you get to Kyo and start walking around town for the first time, you’ll automatically run into a Shinto Priest as part of a scripted encounter and tutorial. He’ll introduce you to the Virtue system, which you can access from both shrines and temples in Like a Dragon: Ishin. After this initial conversation, you’ll get 50 Virtue for your time and learn more about how to take advantage of it in the future. You’ll also see how the temple icons look on the map (they are in blue and look like temples). Also, once you unlock your second home in Chapter 4, you’ll be able to access a shrine on the property.

As for finding a way to earn Virtue in Like a Dragon: Ishin, basically every supplemental action you perform gets you small amounts of it. Did you take part in a fight in town and beat up bad guys? Virtue! Did you stop to eat a meal at a restaurant? How virtuous! Did you participate in Substories? There’s some virtue for you! What about some shopping? Well, aren’t you a virtuoso? Did you visit your second home to farm, cook, or trade? You’ll get Virtue for that as well. It’s constantly accruing. Which is good, because some of the most valuable and helpful unlocks cost thousands of Virtue.

Which Like a Dragon: Ishin Virtue Unlocks Should You Prioritize? 345t

I’d say a big part of this comes down to what you want to do in Like a Dragon: Ishin. The unlock categories are Second Home, Farm, Fishing, Functions, Virtue, and Other. Each one tends to be tied to certain activities.

I think Virtue Cultivation is one of the most valuable options. At the very least, I’d suggest getting the level one unlock. It’s 1,500 Virtue, which is a lot. However, it increases the amount of Virtue you get for additional tasks, which can help a lot.

If you’re having trouble with fighting and getting by, I’d also recommend picking up some of the Inventory Capacity increases These start at 700 Virtue for the first one. It’s self explanatory, really. You can hold more. Spots where you can adjust your inventory, like shrines and rooms, are pretty plentiful though, so I’d understand wanting to save up.

Also, if you want to farm, save up a lot of Virtue for it! You’ll need it to increase the size of your farm, its level, and the range of crops you can grow. It’s probably the area that could take away most of your Virtue, so be ready to take part in a lot of optional timesinks if you want to focus on agrarian activities. Getting the ability to grow taro alone will cost you 3,000 Virtue!

How to Earn Virtue in Like a Dragon: Ishin

Like a Dragon: Ishin is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

People can now test out the latest Yakuza game, Like a Dragon: Ishin, with a Combat Demo. Sega announced it will appear on various storefronts on February 16, 2023. There are also chances to get free DLC weapons by subscribing to the Sega newsletter.

The goal of this Like a Dragon: Ishin Combat Demo is to show off the different fighting styles Ryoma Sakamoto can use in the full game. As for the two weapons, it showed off what they are and look like. Both the Bonechewer Katana and the Waterdrop Katana are optional swords for Ryoma. As long as someone signs up for the newsletter before March 20, 2023, they can get those add-ons.

It took to Twitter to offer a note letting people know what’s going on. In it, it confirmed the free Yakuza: Like a Dragon PS5 upgrade for PS4 s and DLC issues are in the midst of being addressed. It didn’t offer a timeline for a patch, though.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the seventh entry in the series. It is the first to not have Kazuma Kiryu as a protagonist. It is also the first entry to involve a turn-based battle system.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Sega’s been sharing behind the scenes videos with Yakuza: Like a Dragon voice actors talking about their characters and roles. The latest involves a ing cast member with a bit of power behind him. The Yakuza: Like a Dragon Will Yun Lee trailer is all about Masato Arakawa, son of George Takei’s Masumi Arakawa.

Both Ichiban Kasuga and Masato know each other well, thanks to both being under Masumi’s wing. He’s described as leading a “dual life.” He points out the huge consequences of Masato’s actions, while the gameplay footage shows some of the changes he goes through.

While Lee has voiced characters in games before, like Sleeping Dogs’ Wei Shen and Mortal Kombat X’s Kung Lao, he’s best known for his work in TV shows and movies. Some of his most prominent, recent roles include Dr. Alex Park in The Good Doctor, Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon, Danny Woo in Witchblade, and Iori Yagami in The King of Fighters’ 2010 live action movie.
