Square Enix and Red Art Games have announced that Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered International will appear in English, as well as in physical editions early in 2025. There will be two versions of the game available.

You can now pre-order the physical standard edition or the two special physical editions via the official website. As a note, you’ll be able to play Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered in more languages than simply English or Japanese. Red Art Games helped to localize the game into French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Akitoshi Kawazu, the general director of the series, thanks Red Art Games for its and adds that it’s been a dream of his to let more Western fans play a new localized version.

The three versions of the game available are:

• Standard ($43.85): You literally just get the game
• Special ($43.85): The game package has a reversible cover and you get a PVC keychain.
• Collector’s Edition ($73.10): The game has a reversible cover, and you also get a special box. The art on the box differs between the Switch and the PlayStation versions. You’ll also get a Steelcase, an artbook, a manual, and three postcards.

Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered International will come out on the PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on March 30, 2025. This is a placeholder release date so there may be some changes in the future.

Six games will be a part of a special campaign as part of Square Enix’s Spring PC Festival. It will target Star Ocean: The Divine Force, Valkyrie Elysium, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered, and Forspoken. There will also be a stream to show off the PC games that are part of the campaign. Chiaki Matsuzawa and Taiga Kishi will be the presenters. Both of them are known announcers and casters in the game industry. The two of them will play Forspoken on stream as well.

If you follow the official of one of the six above games and are in Japan, you will be eligible for a giveaway. You simply have to retweet the Spring PC Festival Tweet that the will make and then tune in to the stream. Prizes include items like Pringles chips and a Steam gift card. As of the time of writing, only the FFVII Remake Twitter has ed a Tweet.

Obviously, all of the games that are part of the PC Festival campaign are available on Windows PC. But they are also available on other platforms for those whose PC cannot handle heavy gaming. For example, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is also available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

The producer and director for Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered shared their thoughts on how they modernized the game on the Square Enix website. Hiroyuki Miura is the producer, and Naofumi Ueno is the director. The two revealed fan-demand is why this entry returned.

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered is just one of many projects that the SaGa team worked on in order to bring the SaGa games onto modern consoles. The team chose to work on Minstrel Song after SaGa Frontier Remastered due to high player demand. While the game is mostly a port, there are some quality-of-life improvements such as mini-maps and New Game +. This is all part of modernizing an old game for a new audience.

As for new content (which includes new playable characters and scenarios), the team included them for players who beat the original game. This way, players who may have beat the original Minstrel Song several times since its 2005 debut can experience something new. Because Ueno played Minstrel Song as a regular player in the past, he had confidence that the game is great on its own. Due to that faith, there were not many changes, thus preserving the “charm of the original.”

For reference, Romancing SaGa initially came out in 1992 in Japan. The PS2 remake, Minstrel Song, then came out in both Japan and North America in 2005. Miura states that there will be more SaGa games in the future. However, he did not provide more details beyond that.

According to leaks of an issue of Famitsu, SaGa Series Director Akitoshi Kawazu teased more developments for the franchise ahead of its 35th anniversary in 2024. These developments include remasters of remaining older SaGa games, entirely new projects, and other hype-building announcements for the anniversary year. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

The leak comes from comments printed in a coming issue of Famitsu magazine. The comments come from Akitoshi Kawazu discussing the SaGa series' future. In them, he mentions that the number of SaGa titles left potentially needing a remaster is growing smaller. The shortlist for remasters would include Romancing SaGa 2, 2002's Unlimited SaGa, or the "First-Generation" SaGa games.

The first-generation SaGa series games are the Game Boy-based Makai Toushi SaGa, SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu, and SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha. They were released in English as the three Final Fantasy Legend games. Meanwhile, Romancing SaGa 2 technically got a remaster on modern platforms in 2017. Unlimited SaGa has not received any remasters as of yet, and was last available on the PS2.

Besides remasters, Kawazu hinted that other unannounced SaGa series projects are in the pipeline. The series will celebrate its 35th anniversary in late 2024, so Kawazu wants to "make things exciting" for fans. He said he "wants to have something new to talk about every month". With nearly two years between now and the actual 35th anniversary, there could be time for more announcements or solid plans.

While both Aisha and Jamil aren’t new to Romancing SaGa, some characters will be. Aldora, Flammar, Marina, Monica, and Shirach will all be able to become your allies this time. Of those five, Aldora will get the most attention. She’ll have her own story in the game.

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered is coming soon and includes new features. With its December 1, 2022 release date approaching, Square Enix detailed more about what this new edition will bring to the table. The game itself is a remastered edition of 2005's Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. Minstrel Song was in turn was a remake of the 1992 original on the SNES [Thanks, Inside Games!].

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered will include quite a few new additions. Chiefly, they'll arrive in the form of additional playable characters. In Remastered, players will be able to recruit the characters Shirach (aka Schiele), Monica, Marina (aka Marine), Flammar, and Aldora to the playable party. Aldora will also have new story content, told from her viewpoint. The new events were written by Akitoshi Kawazu, general Director for the SaGa series.

For completionists, Minstrel Song Remastered will add ultra high-difficulty boss battles, eclipsing the original game's toughest challenges. The original version of Minstrel Song was originally thought to have the toughest boss battles in JRPG history. Remastered will add dozens of bosses that are even harder. Kyoji Koizumi, battle designer on the original, helped supervise the work. Additionally, the new challenges will feature rearranged versions of the boss themes.

Finally, Minstrel Song Remastered will have additional weapons, playable classes, and other refinements. The level cap will be raised, and certain skills that were once inaccessible will be unlocked. Outside the game proper, a library function will let players enjoy the music and art from the game at their leisure.

Square Enix announced the remaster and opened an official website back in March 2022. It will be a remastered version of Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song, which released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2005. Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song itself was a remake of Romancing SaGa for the SNES. The PS2 version replaced the 16-bit art style with 3D graphics.

Furthermore, in addition to higher resolution graphics, the remaster will feature an updated UI and a fast-forwarding mechanic that will make the game easier to play. The remaster will also add several dozen new high-level bosses for players to enjoy in the end-game. Some of these bosses appeared in the Nintendo Direct trailer above.

Square Enix announced a remastered version of Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song will appear in Winter 2022. It will release for the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and both Android and iOS devices. Character models for Albert, Aisha, Gray, Claudia, Jamil, Sif, Hawk, and Barbara have been updated in the remaster along with the various locals that appear in the game.

The original Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song is a PlayStation 2 remake of the original title, which released on the Super Nintendo in 1992. The updated version released some years later, arriving in both Japan and North America in 2005. This remake included updated character designs for each of the eight protagonists.

The remaster will feature new high resolution graphics and new elements. It will also include features to make the game more playable for modern audiences. More information about this will appear sometime in the future.
