We’re a year away from the May 2026 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. It’ll be a lot, even though we should be able to expect more insights and announcements over the coming months to help us learn more about what to expect. That does mean that we might need one or two open-world games to welcome into our lives while we wait, but fortunately there are plenty of options to scratch the GTA VI itch.

Best Grand Theft Auto game to play while waiting for GTA VI: GTA: Vice City  6sp3u

I know a lot of people are going to perhaps take issue with my suggesting Grand Theft Auto: Vice City instead of GTA V as the best entry in the series to play ahead of GTA VI. Hear me out. First, this is also an absolutely exceptional open-world game. It’s among the best installments Rockstar made, right up there with GTA V and GTA: San Andreas. We also get to hear the fantastic Ray Liotta as our antihero Tommy Vercetti as deals with the mob. But even more critical is that this is an opportunity to visit Vice City again before returning to it as the new location with Lucia and Jason.

GTA: Vice City is available on the PS2, Xbox, PC, and also showed up on mobile devices.

Best open-world game with a medieval setting to play while waiting for GTA VI: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 6s5q4q

This is another suggestion that could be controversial, but I have my reasons for it. Yes, I believe Skyrim is the superior game. However, it’s one of the most popular open-world games in the world and available on every possible platform. Odds are, you’ve played it. The original Oblivion came out in 2006, which means folks maybe missed it, and the new remaster is a fantastic update with tons of quality of life adjustments and visual enhancements based on Skyrim. It’s well worth a look if you need a game to play while waiting for GTA VI. 

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. 

Best open-world game with a more modern setting to play while waiting for GTA VI: Yakuza 0 243q2r

I can’t recommend Yakuza 0 highly enough. It’s a wonderful entry point for the series, due to introducing Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima. We’re seeing them as young, up-and-coming yakuza, which sometimes fits in with the characters climbing the ranks in Grand Theft Auto games. There are tons of side activities to engage in around the city, again just like in GTA. Plus, the execution makes the city and its residents feel like a priority, which is great.

Yakuza 0 is available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the Director’s Cut will come to the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. 

Best open-world game with a futuristic setting to play while waiting for GTA VI: Cyberpunk 2077 h215b

CD Projekt Red open-world games are known for the same sorts of details and optional side activities and quests as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto games, and Cyberpunk 2077 is a good pick to play while waiting for GTA VI. It features an incredibly futuristic story with unusual modifications you can pursue. It’s far enough from its original release that it’s in fantastic shape at the moment, complete with a Phantom Liberty add-on you might have missed if you only played at launch. 

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Switch 2 version launches on June 5, 2025. 

Best open-world sci-fi game to play while waiting for GTA VI: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition 6o711g

Listen, I will take any opportunity to hype up Xenoblade Chronicles, and Xenoblade Chronicles X is a fantastic installment. There’s character customization. There’s a city to explore. A world to survey. Skells to pilot. Tons of mission to undertake. Allies to find. It’s a huge game with an intricate story, and the new Definitive Edition helps wrap up some loose ends.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is available on the Wii U, and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is on the Switch.

The new Grand Theft Auto game takes us back to Leonida, and Rockstar Games released a fresh GTA VI trailer that confirms protagonists Lucia and Jason hail from Vice City. While the first video that revealed the game focused on her, this time Rockstar used the second one to focus on Jason and how a day in his life goes before showing the duo together.

Things begin with Jason working on the roof of a somewhat run-down house’s roof to fix the leaks. His boss Brian comes by and tells him to go pick up checks from his properties. We see him stop by one and beat someone up to get that money. He then works out on the beach and picks up some beer from a shop. Things 

Vice City first debuted in GTA: Vice City, which we could initially play on the PS2, Xbox, and PC ahead of mobile releases. It later appeared in the spin-off GTA: Vice City Stories, but we haven’t seen it as a location in-game since. At about the one minute mark, we see him visiting a jail to pick up Lucia, who is getting out. The guard notes that Jason’s come by before. The two then reunite.

After that, we see that Lucia and Jason get back to what might be their old routine. The two go on a heist, they drink on a pier, they do some work for Brian, and talk about this being a fresh start for the two of them. This latter half of the video also highlights Vice City itself, showing how it’s changed for GTA VI, and confirms Phil’s Ammu-Nation returns.

Rockstar Games shared an update on Grand Theft Auto VI after months of silence, and it involved a 2026 release date. While the team originally expected to release it in 2025, it turns out it is about a year away still. However, we now have an exact date for it. GTA VI debuts on May 26, 2026. 

The official announcement on Rockstar Newswire got into the exact reason behind the delay out of 2025. The team’s goal is to provide the highest quality product possible, essentially, and so the company will take the extra time to continue to focus on its development. 

Here’s the full statement regarding the Grand Theft Auto VI release date:

“Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your and your patience as we work to finish the game. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”

We’ve heard nothing about the new entry since December 2024. That was when the first GTA VI trailer appeared. However, that didn’t roll out exactly as planned. Following a leak of the video, Rockstar Games ended up sharing it earlier than expected. It introduced a heroine named Lucia, who lives in Leonida.

Red Dead Redemption is finally getting a PC release, as announced by Rockstar. Both the base game and the Undead Nightmare expansion will be coming to Steam, Epic and Rockstar’s own storefront on October 29, 2024.

Rockstar confirmed the official PC version of Red Dead Redemption is on the way via the company's website. The port will be handled by Double Eleven, who previously handled the PS4 and Switch ports of the game. New features added for the PC version include native 4K resolution, for ultrawide monitors and keyboard and mouse controls.

As well as the base game, the PC port will come bundled with Undead Nightmare. This was the non-canon standalone expansion to the game that saw John Marston face off against zombie hordes.

A possible PC release for the game was leaked earlier this year, when we saw the description of the PS4 version briefly changed to mention PC-specific features. While the description was quickly changed back to its original wording, screenshots were widely circulated. Up until now, the game has been exclusively available on consoles, from its original PS3 and Xbox 360 release up to more modern ports.

Red Dead Redemption is set to release on PC on October 29, 2024. It is also currently available on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

A PC release of Red Dead Redemption may have been teased, thanks to an unexpected source. This game’s PlayStation Store listing briefly displayed some extra text mentioning a PC version of the title. [Thanks, @Wario64!]

The change to the Red Dead Redemption listing stated that the game was “now on PC for the first time ever” despite there being no official announcement of this release. This is also notable for being on PSN, despite this not being a PC storefront, and because the PS4 version of the game has been out for almost a year.

While the description was similar to the standard PSN listing for Red Dead Redemption, there were mentions of PC-specific features. These included increased options for greater resolutions and framerates, alternate display options and spatial surround sound. Screenshots have been circulating on social media after the description was first noticed, although this new description has since been reverted back to the original from 2023.

A PC release is highly anticipated for Red Dead Redemption. Despite the game’s critical and commercial success since its initial release in 2010, the game has remained a console exclusive. The game originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, with a re-release in 2023 for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, did release for Steam and the now-defunct Stadia streaming service.

Red Dead Redemption is out now for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. A PC version may be in the works.

Rockstar Games has released the GTA 6 trailer early after it was leaked online a day before its scheduled premiere event. The video confirms that the long-awaited sequel takes place in Vice City and will be released in 2025.

Following a leak on X (formerly known as Twitter), Rockstar responded to clips of their game being posted early by publishing the full Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer on YouTube. In a separate tweet, the developer explained, "Our trailer has leaked, so please watch the real thing on YouTube."

The GTA 6 trailer confirms that the game will take place in Leonida, Vice City, which is inspired by Miami, Florida. The story will center around protagonist Lucia, who has just gotten out of jail. Following her release from prison, it appears she goes on a crime spree across Vice City with her boyfriend.

The nearly two-minute video shows off a handful of gameplay, plot elements, and side characters that we can expect to run into while exploring Leonida. Interestingly, the trailer also appears to confirm the major leaks from 2021 were real. In the leaks from a couple of years ago, a hacker posted images of the dual protagonists that are in the final trailer. It remains to be seen if Rockstar Games will have more information to release about the game.

Rockstar Games announced that the first trailer for the new Grand Theft Auto game, which could be GTA 6, is coming December 5, 2023 at 9:00 AM ET. This will be the first-ever official look at the title.

Earlier in November 2023, Rockstar Games shared a message to all of the company's fans that December 2023 marked the 25th anniversary of the publisher and gave thanks to all of the fans who have played Rockstar Games over the years. Founded in 1998, the company's guiding idea was that video games could be an essential part of culture like any other form of media. Within that same announcement, Rockstar Games revealed plans to show the first trailer for their next Grand Theft Auto game. Many anticipate that this will be the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6.

Grand Theft Auto 5 recently ed one Xbox Game , a subscription service created by Microsoft and Xbox. This has allowed the game to be available to Xbox players who pay for access to the expansive game library on Xbox consoles and compatible PCs. Rockstar Games also recently released Red Dead Redemption with the Undead Nightmare expansion onto the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The collection released digitally on August 17, 2023, and released physically on October 13, 2023.

Rockstar Games announced that the first trailer for the new Grand Theft Auto game, which could be GTA 6, is coming in early December 2023. This first-ever official look at the title is being released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publisher.

Bloomberg previously shared rumors that the long-awaited trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 would be coming sometime during December 2023 in association with the 25th anniversary. No official word had been given by Rockstar Games until the announcement made on November 8, 2023.

Rumors have spread about GTA 6 for nearly a decade as fans of the franchise awaited more information about the follow-up to the extremely successful Grand Theft Auto 5. Back in September 2022, developer footage of the new Grand Theft Auto game leaked through a network hack into Rockstar Games. Two UK-based teens were charged with the illegal hack into Rockstar Games' network.

Grand Theft Auto 5 recently ed one of the various subscription services. It is on Xbox Game , making it available to Xbox players who pay for access to the library. Rockstar Games also recently released Red Dead Redemption with the Undead Nightmare expansion onto the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Rockstar Games announced that we'll see Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare expansion on the Switch and PS4. It will show up digitally on both platforms on August 17, 2023 for $49.99. If you prefer a physical copy, you'll need to wait until October 13, 2023 for that to show up in stores. There's also an initial trailer showing how the game and its zombie-themed add-on will look on the systems.

Rockstar Games also noted Double Eleven is involved with the porting process. Previous, the developer worked on the Vita version of LittleBigPlanet, the console version of Rust, and Fallout 76.

Red Dead Redemption first appeared on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. The Undead Nightmare expansion, which also ended up being a standalone game, showed up later that same year.

The latest entry in the series is Red Dead Redemption 2. We can play it on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It was also available on PCs via Google Stadia, however that service is now dead.

Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare will come to the Nintendo Switch and PS4 on August 17, 2023.

You won’t have to have Red Dead Redemption 2 to play Red Dead Online anymore. Standalone digital copies of the multiplayer adventure will be sold on storefronts like the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, and Steam starting on December 1, 2020. It will be $4.99 until February 15, 2021.

The standalone copy will offer everything the one packed in with Red Dead Redemption does. That means you’ll have Bounty Hunter, Collector, Moonshiner, Naturalist, and Trader Specialist Roles and 13 Elimination and Showdown modes. People will also be able to get expansion and update content when it arrives.  It will also allow people to pay extra later to unlock the campaign.

Just before that happens, the Bounty Hunter will get an update. A role expansion will add a 100 Rank Outlaw , Legendary Bounties, Prestigious equipment, and skills.

Red Dead Redemption 2, which includes Red Dead Online, is immediately available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and it is backwards compatible on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. (On consoles, necessary subscription plans will need to be in place to play this online game.) The Red Dead Online standalone version will appear on December 1, 2020 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with a 75% off discount in effect until February 15, 2021.

Apparently, you can't keep Grand Theft Auto V down. Sony’s PlayStation 5 game reveal kicked off with a port port announcement, rather than a look at an entirely new game. A GTA VPS5 version will be heading to the system after it launches. It will be “expanded and enhanced,” though there was no elaboration as to how. It also didn't note exactly when it will appear beyond a vague 2021 window.

While people wait for the new version of GTA V , there will be something PlayStation 4 owners can do right now. Until GTA V PS5 launches, people with the PS4 version can get GTA$1 million every month. If this works like other PlayStation Plus incentives, people might have to head to the PlayStation Store on a monthly basis to ensure they get their free virtual cash.
