This isn’t the first time Capcom had issues with ray tracing and 3D audio in Resident Evil games on Steam. In 2022, an update adding these options to Resident Evil 2, 3 and VII all caused performance issues for s on older systems. It also broke mods in the process. Capcom had to reissue an older version that didn’t raytracing.

Resident Evil 2 and 3 are both available for Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Amazon Luna, and the Nintendo Switch via the cloud.

Resident Evil 3 Interview 323739 Capcom’s Peter Fabiano Talks Nemesis and This Adaptation https://siliconera.voiranime.info/resident-evil-3-interview/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=resident-evil-3-interview https://siliconera.voiranime.info/resident-evil-3-interview/#respond <![CDATA[Lucas White]]> Mon, 01 Jun 2020 19:00:52 +0000 <![CDATA[Featured]]> <![CDATA[PC]]> <![CDATA[PlayStation 4]]> <![CDATA[Xbox One]]> <![CDATA[Capcom]]> <![CDATA[Interviews]]> <![CDATA[Resident Evil]]> <![CDATA[Resident Evil 3]]> <![CDATA[Resident Evil 3 Remake]]> https://siliconera.voiranime.info/?p=838091 <![CDATA[

resident evil 3 interview 2

Capcom's recent run has come to a pause for now, and until we know what's next, Resident Evil 3 is the latest and greatest. From my perspective, this was a fascinating game for several reasons, from its newer development studio to its significant changes compared to the original. The response to it from both critics and community was also interesting and much more varied compared to last year's Resident Evil 2. Luckily, we got the chance to speak to someone at Capcom about the game in general. Siliconera was able to get in touch with producer Peter Fabiano and pick his brain with a few questions about the project.

Lucas White, Siliconera: Now that Resident Evil 3 has been out for a little while, how does Capcom and the team feel about it? Any unexpected surprises or important takeaways from how fans and critics responded?

Peter Fabiano, Capcom: We’re always looking at and internalizing it as we move forward. We worked to adapt the original source material and make it something fresh for newcomers as well those who played the original. We do our best to please as many people as possible, while staying on vision and creating
the game the team wants to make. In the end, we were able to create the product we set out to, and we are proud of the results. We try to keep aware of what s are saying and will do our best to incorporate their in future titles.

resident evil 3 interview 4 (1)

It seems like RE 3 was in development for a few years, yes? What sort of relationship was there between this and RE 2? Was there a “style guide” so to speak, or did the teams work fairly independently?

Fabiano: Resident Evil 3 was in development for about 3 years. The teams worked independently for the most part, but there was certainly some knowledge sharing as well as sharing ideas, certain technologies and RE Engine.

In a lot of ways, gameplay elements introduced in the original game shaped how the series continued to develop, even today. It feels like as a result, some of RE 3’s unique appeal has been absorbed by the series writ large. Mr X in the RE 2 remake is a good example. Do you agree with this, and can you speak to some of this project’s main goals?

Fabiano: We did our best to make Nemesis into something special and differentiate him from Tyrant. Our goal with RE 3 was to make something that continued in the vein of the re-imagined RE 2 and also add an online survival horror multiplayer game set in the Resident Evil universe.

resident evil 3 interview old

The original RE 3’s place in the series in of how fans look back on it can be fascinating. What were some of the key points the team started with, with respect to approaching the game as an adaptation?

Fabiano: As we’ve discussed throughout our campaign, we wanted to keep true to the essence of the original but also make the game feel fresh. We knew we wanted to tell Jill Valentine’s story as she escaped Raccoon City and Nemesis. We also wanted to bring out more of the characterizations, especially the growing partnership between Jill and Carlos; so we kept key beats in the story and then took liberties with how it all unfolded.

Jill is often a fan favorite for older fans of the series, while she may not be as well known for folks who didn’t grow up with the older games or stuff like Marvel vs Capcom 2. RE 3 seems to jump right in with assuming the player knows who she is. What was the creative thought process there?

Fabiano: From a narrative perspective, it didn’t matter whether you knew who Jill was from previous games. The story takes place in-medias-res and is complete and comprehensive in its story-telling. We wanted veteran players, newcomers, as well as those who had just gotten into the franchise with 2019’s RE 2 to hop right in and feel at home with the protagonist.

resident evil 3 interview 1

What are the best parts about remaking a game that’s several generations old? What are the biggest challenges or roadblocks?

Fabiano: We had of the original team working on the game so they were extremely excited to completely rebuild their vision for what Raccoon City should look like, as well as being able to tell a fully fleshed out narrative with today’s technology. We were also pleased to be able to tie the stories of Resident Evil 2 and 3 together more than in the originals. It’s always a challenge to figure out what to include and what to change or adapt but we’re happy that we were able to stay on target and realize our vision.

Is Resident Evil 3 a finished project, or are there any tweaks or updates in the works?

Fabiano: Resident Evil 3 is a finished product.

Capcom’s library is full of long-running series, with many different hands and creative talents involved. How does a series’ identity stay intact through years of changes and fresh faces? Or in other words, what makes Resident Evil... Resident Evil?

Fabiano: As with all major franchises, it’s important to look at the game’s roots, identify its pillars and keep those consistent while at the same time moving the brand forward. You can see with the original trilogy of Resident Evil 1 through Resident Evil 3, the controls and aesthetic were consistent but made iterations on gameplay. With Resident Evil 4 through 6, gameplay made a shift towards action and the camera moved to third person. With Resident Evil 7 we took the game to first person and revisited the claustrophobic feeling of the mansion in Resident Evil 1. Put simply, Resident Evil means a lot of things to many people, but it’s always attempted to continue and reinvent survival horror.

How about closing this out with a message for Resident Evil fans looking forward to what’s next?

Fabiano: Thanks for being fans! We hope to keep creating content that you can enjoy.

A big thanks to Peter for his time, and of course the folks at Capcom for the opportunity to reach out and chat.

Resident Evil 3 is currently available for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC.

resident evil 3 interview 2

We do our best to please as many people as possible, while staying on vision and creating the game the team wants to make. In the end, we were able to create the product we set out to, and we are proud of the results. We try to keep aware of what s are saying and will do our best to incorporate their in future titles. resident evil 3 interview 4 (1) It seems like RE 3 was in development for a few years, yes? Our goal with RE 3 was to make something that continued in the vein of the re-imagined RE 2 and also add an online survival horror multiplayer game set in the Resident Evil universe. resident evil 3 interview old The original RE 3’s place in the series in of how fans look back on it can be fascinating. We wanted veteran players, newcomers, as well as those who had just gotten into the franchise with 2019’s RE 2 to hop right in and feel at home with the protagonist. resident evil 3 interview 1 What are the best parts about remaking a game that’s several generations old? Resident Evil 3 Remake Sales 2 Million Units

Resident Evil 3 Remake has shipped 2 million units worldwide five days after its release. This information comes directly from the official Capcom website. Capcom also noted that "digital versions of the game ed for nearly 50% of sales.." The company says that Capcom's digital sales strategy played a large part in this. [Thanks, Alex Aniel!]

The original title, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, sold a cumulative 3.5 million units. Regarding their mentioned digital sales strategy, both the playable demo and the Resident Evil: Resistance open test beta are mentioned in the official statement as having generated a strong reception from fans. Resistance is an asymmetrical horror title that comes bundled when bought with Resident Evil 3 Remake.

In comparison, Resident Evil 2 Remake (released in January 2019) has shipped over 6.5 million units cumulatively. Capcom says this "demonstrates their success in leveraging its wealth of popular IPs in modern iterations."

Recently, Capcom released a survey to gauge interest in potential remakes. In addition to this, a rumor has popped up regarding a potential Resident Evil 4 Remake being currently in the works. It is understood that the Capcom backed studio M-Two, the team that contributed to work on Resident Evil 3 Remake, will be spearheading this project.

resident evil 3 playtest 3

After universal acclaim and endless gushing from yours truly and the rest of the community for 2019’s Resident Evil 2, I am in no way shocked at the response to 2020's remake. As excited as I was to dive in and as much as I did enjoy my run through Resident Evil 3, I knew what to expect going in. What I expected was… Resident Evil 3. I have a stack of S.D. Perry novels on my bookshelf; the Resident Kool-Aid flows through my veins. But keeping expectations in check doesn’t negate the problems Resident Evil 3 innately comes with. And with a remake? Those problems stand out more, but in a peculiar, fascinating way that’s only possible in a series like Resident Evil.

It’s kind of ironic how Resident Evil discourse often swirls around what the series’ identity should or shouldn’t be, what it is versus what it was and why that matters. It’s ironic because, well, Resident Evil’s true defining characteristic is chaos: scrapped projects, ever-changing leadership, desperate attempts to innovate. There’s a rift between “classic” RE fans and “modern” RE fans, but neither of those labels mean much. And it just so happens that Resident Evil 3 is the perfect lens through which we can see that. And in creating such a straightforward adaptation, Capcom has only made that lens more sharp.

resident evil 3 playtest 4

Resident Evil 3 wasn’t even supposed to be Resident Evil 3. That game was canceled, leaving Code Veronica and a spin-off meant to give a newbie team a cool project to prove itself on. Code Veronica was too far off for a “3” there to make economic sense, so the spin-off became the real deal, Jill Valentine was inserted, and the creative team had to confront its lack of series knowledge. The result was an interesting game that certainly contributed to the greater Resident Evil lore, but also a game that struggled to justify itself overall. It was more of an escape room than a story, and it leaned heavy on gimmicky new features that both added and detracted from the Resident Evil experience.

One of the biggest problems with the Resident Evil 3remake is that… those features aren’t new anymore. Despite fans being up and down on it, Resident Evil 3 did have a lasting impact on the series. It introduced things like interactive environmental objects, crafting for ammo and other tools, and even expanded mobility options. All of these things carried on to sequels. And the other big gimmick from Resident Evil 3 was Nemesis, the iconic Tyrant that chased you around Raccoon City. All of these innovations reappeared, became a normal part of the series, or showed up in new ways as recently as Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2’s remake.

resident evil 3 playtest 2

So with Capcom’s remake strategy, which largely seems to be about preserving the skeletal structure of the games while elaborating on the meaty parts, Resident Evil 3 was already at a disadvantage. It was a more action-oriented game with a short, speed run-friendly story that was more about the stuff you could do than puzzles or plot. These are inherent conflicts with the things that made Resident Evil 2 so brilliant last year, and cramming Resident Evil 3 into that framework was guaranteed to disappoint people who were expecting more. Resident Evil 3's original innovations are standard now, and the series has already gone further in the action direction, backed up, twisted around a little, and found a middle ground. RE 2's remake already was RE 3 in a lot of ways.

I really was into my time with Resident Evil 3. It does more for Jill Valentine as a classic character than many other recent RE entries, even Revelations. It’s full of nods and winks to the nerdier parts of the fanbase, and the way the dodge maneuver works here rules. But in following up Resident Evil 2 so quickly, a game more suited for widespread success, it’s easy to see why the review scores vary the way they do. It’s a good thing though; consensus is never good for discourse, and the scrappy parts that make RE 3 so up and down with people are fun to dive into critically. But at the end of the day I’m a RE 6 apologist, so what do I know?

If you would like to purchase the OST for yourself, you can do so via the iTunes Store and the Amazon Music storefronts. Additionally, the OST has also been ed to Spotify for fans to listen to without needing to purchase the album. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

For longtime Resident Evil fans, Jill Valentine has been there since the beginning. She wasn’t much of a character in the original game, but nobody really was--after all, it was a corny hybrid of low budget experimentation and George Romero homage--much of it was deliberately or necessarily shallow. Yet, the series’ oddball charm endeared the characters to fans, and Jill was arguably the main character. But Capcom lost its way for a while with Resident Evil and, even when it found its way back, Jill got thrown under the bus. But with Capcom’s new Resident Evil 3 remake, we have a new opportunity to do Jill justice, to put her back in the spotlight the way many of her friends already have. And that’s exactly what happened here.

resident evil jill 3 4

2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake was a brilliant game, but it was still Resident Evil 2. Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy are ive leads, outsiders who just happen into the Raccoon City outbreak. Their stories are mostly reactive, therefore the plot isn’t really about them as characters (they're still cool though). But with Resident Evil 3, the whole thing revolved around Jill Valentine. Her presence is what drives the narrative, not the other way around. A big part of that is Nemesis chasing her down of course, but that’s from the player’s perspective. Nemesis is there because of Jill, because she knows what’s going on and who is responsible. But Jill being the plot-driving mechanism >isn’t the only reason why Resident Evil 3’s remake justifies itself.

Resident Evil 3 is full of life. Ironic, considering the scenario. Resident Evil 2 didn’t need it as much. Leon and Claire are pure babyface heroes, just trying to survive and be the good guys. Ada is there to add some intrigue, and everyone is charismatic and likeable, but nobody has a particularly compelling arc or presence. Resident Evil 3 is immediately interested in who Jill is and why she is who she is. It opens with a violent dream sequence, then through set design, shows us how the Spencer Mansion incident affected her. She has a wall of newspaper clippings and another wall of research materials all pinned together, detective/conspiracy theorist-style. Multiple bottles of pills cover her bedside table. Her space is mostly neat, but there’s a giant pizza box left open on a table and the fridge is covered in magnets. Yes, Jill survived a traumatic experience and there are side effects. But she is pressing forward, still fighting and still trying to live a life.

resident evil 3 jill 3

A few hours later, Jill is being attacked by a giant spider, and it lays eggs down her throat H.R. Giger-style. It’s a tutorial moment, the game showing Jill’s infected with parasites and giving you obvious clues that green herbs are a simple fix. She vomits graphically once you eat some. It’s a gruesome moment, but is a person puking really worse than… everything else happening? No, but it stands out because of how mundane it is. This game is interested in Jill Valentine as a character and a protagonist. This isn’t Tomb Raider (2013), in which the game goes out of its way to beat the hell out of Lara Croft to show how hard and traumatic her experience is. Jill has already faced the trauma and is choosing to engage with the situation in front of her. The vomiting stands out because it isn’t one moment among several, it’s something real happening to our video game hero, who has up until this point shrugged everything off. Moments earlier, she was dodge-rolling under Nemesis’ rolling lariats and knifing zombies to death.

resident evil 3 jill 1

Jill does awesome hero stuff. She kicks down vent covers to escape Nemesis, shoots exploding barrels, and exchanges ribs with Carlos. She says “fuck” a lot, eats hella pizza, and occasionally pukes when spiders lay eggs down her throat. She has layers, colored with moments of strength, humor, vulnerability, and anger. Despite the heavy genre vibes necessary for horror, Jill Valentine feels like a real person, like the hero of a blockbuster movie the audience can relate to. She isn’t a Nathan Drake, but she isn’t a typical “Strong Female Protagonist Defined by Trauma” either. It’s like Capcom’s team here knew Resident Evil 3 wouldn’t be able to capture the same atmospheric success as the previous game (a correct assumption), so it focused on breathing more life into the story. After being disappointed for so long with Jill’s later appearances in Resident Evil, it’s nice to be reminded why she was my favorite.

Resident Evil 3 launches for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC on April 3, 2020.

Resident Evil 3 remake Raccoon City Incident Report trailer

The Resident Evil 3 remake is a couple of weeks away from release and we got a new "Raccoon City Incident Report" trailer from Capcom to give us a quick 5-minute recap.

Check out the Raccoon City Incident Report trailer for the Resident Evil 3 remake below:

Raccoon City, once a metropolis located in the midwestern United States. It was also the home of the pharmaceutical giant, Umbrella Corporation. The city was a vibrant, peaceful place... until "the incident" that would change everything.

Resident Evil 0 441j3m

July 23, 1998

It all began with a series of bizarre, cannibalistic murders occurring in the outskirts of Raccoon City. In response, the Raccoon Police Department dispatches the Bravo team of S.T.A.R.S., an elite special forces unit, to investigate. However, an engine failure forces them to make an emergency landing in their helicopter. The team survives the rough landing, only to discover an MP vehicle, whose engers had been gruesomely murdered...

Bravo team sets out in search of the only suspect, an escaped ex-Marine convict...

Resident Evil 2i48g

In response to the helicopter crash, and the lack of correspondence from the Bravo team, the S.T.A.R.S. captain dispatches Alpha team. When the Alpha team touch down to investigate the crash site, they are attacked by a pack of ferocious dogs...

... and barely escape into a nearby mansion.

What awaits them inside...

... is a nightmare, where undead creatures walk the mansion.

As they search for an escape from the dangers of the mansion, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and the other S.T.A.R.S. , uncover the grim truth. The zombies in the mansion are the byproducts of a bioweapon that was manufactured by Umbrella.

Taking great risks along the way, the remaining S.T.A.R.S. escape the mansion within an inch of their lives. Upon their escape, Jill, Chris, and any S.T.A.R.S. left alive, vowed to work together, in order to expose Umbrella's dark secret.

And so, what would later come to be known as the "Mansion Incident", came to an end...

Resident Evil 2 6n534l

September 22, 1998

Two months after the Mansion Incident...

Hidden deep in the bowels of Raccoon City, lies a vast Umbrella research lab. In an attempt to recover the research of William Birkin, Umbrella accidentally causes the leak of a bioweapon...

September 29, 1998

Rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy heads towards Raccoon City, for the first day of his new job...

At the same time, Claire Redfield rides towards the city, searching for her older brother Chris, who has been unreachable for two months.

When they both arrive, they discover a city of the dead.

So, what exactly happened in the buildup to Raccoon's destruction? One day earlier...

September 28, 1998

Jill Valentine.

She continues her own investigation into Umbrella as the city falls to ruin. Umbrella takes advantage of the chaos, and sends in Nemesis, a new type of bioweapon. Its goal is simple: Eliminate all remaining S.T.A.R.S. .

As a veil of desperation descends on Raccoon City, can Jill maker her last escape...?

The Resident Evil 3 remake will release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on April 3, 2020. The demo arrives tomorrow, March 19, 2020.

resident evil 3 collectors edition europe

People outside of North America that were hoping to get a deluxe version of the Resident Evil 3 remake are in luck. The official Twitter has just confirmed that the Resident Evil 3 Collector’s Edition is Europe-bound. Retailers like GAME are now accepting preorders for £214.99.

The Resident Evil 3 Collector’s Edition European release is identical to the one that will be sold in GameStop. People get an 11-inch tall Jill Valentine figure, which coincidentally matches the Leon S. Kennedy figure from the Resident Evil 2 Collector’s Edition. It also has a double-sided poster of Raccoon City that offers a before and after look at the city, a Project: N & Project R art book, and a digital soundtrack that has Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Resistance songs. It all comes packed in a S.T.A.R.S. item box.

In addition to the confirmation of the Resident Evil 3 Collector’s Edition European release, Capcom has been busy showing off the game’s characters. Most recently, an array of screenshots accompanied a trailer looking at Nemesis and Carlos’ playable portion of the game.

Resident Evil 3 will come to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, 2020, and it will include Resident Evil: Resistance.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Jill Valentine

Resident Evil 3 remake producer Masachika Kawata and Peter J. Fabiano recently spoke with Famitsu about the game's development, Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, Nemesis, and more. [Thanks, Gamestalk.]

Below are highlights from the recently-published full interview:

 • The concepts for the game are the fear of being pursued, using the process of escaping a base, Jill's beauty, and depicting the fear of Nemesis known as the "Pursuer."
 • Resident Evil Resistance which comes included also has a theme of escape. Capcom moved forward in the development of both titles using the concept of "escape."
 • Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Resistance aren't related and are made as completely standalone titles from each other.
 • Resident Evil 3 has more rearranged elements compared to Resident Evil 2.
 • Capcom further modified the B.O.W. Nemesis as a new weapon.
 • The master ROM is practically complete so Capcom promises no delays. As far as the completion rate goes, it's at about 90% with only the final adjustments to go.
 • As for the story, it mostly follows the original work, but thanks to the added rearrangements, those familiar with the original will get to enjoy a fresh new take.
 • Jill boasts top-class popularity of characters in the Resident Evil series, so the developers took caution to not ruin her image with design changes. The game has more action than Resident Evil 2, so they wanted to give her a costume that doesn't look uncomfortable during intense action.
 • Capcom not only rearranged Carlos' appearances but also his personality. However, he likes joking around and talking idly, but the part about him actually being nice doesn't change much. He connects with Jill through an organization called U.B.C.S., but he's the kind of character that overflows with kindness and cares for his allies from the U.B.C.S. He's a ionate man and there's a scene that really shows it in the game.
 • As for Brad Vickers, we want you to see him in the game, but circumstances have changed a bit. He's been doing all kinds of work together with his remaining buddies of S.T.A.R.S.
 • Resident Evil 2 highlighted the fear of zombies, for Resident Evil 3 it's the action. It also has plenty that makes it a Resident Evil game.

Resident Evil 3 remake releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, 2020 with a sweet limited edition. Check our previous report for a look at the woman behind the face of Jill Valentine.

A new interview in the latest Famitsu with Resident Evil 3 producers Peter Fabiano and Masachika Kawata reveals that the game will have more changed elements compared to the relatively faithful Resident Evil 2, and more details. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089!]

Here are the highlights:

 • There will be more changed or rearranged elements compared to Resident Evil 2.

 • The master rom of the game is complete, so there likely won't be any delays. What's left are final adjustments, so game development is around 90% complete.

 • The game (like the original) begins before 2, and ends after 2.

 • Jill is one of their most popular characters. They took care to make sure she retained her image even with the design change, and the design changes was made so that she'd look more action-oriented. The original costumes for Jill and Carlos will be available as a bonus.

 • Carlos looks more mature, but is still a joker who speaks casually. He's just as hot-blooded as before.

 • They haven't revealed any gameplay yet, but they've focused on the action elements more during development. RE2 featured the horrific nature of zombies, while RE3 features action. Of course, it will retain its Resident Evil-like elements.

 • Like RE2, the game uses a third-person behind the camera view.

 • Resident Evil: Resistance will connect with RESIDENT EVIL.NET.

 • In order to surprise players, they decided to cut down on the time between the announcement and the game's release.

The Resident Evil 3 remake will launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, 2020. Check out more screenshots in our previous post here.
