The original Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army came out worldwide right before Persona 3 launched and basically showed a larger audience how incredible Shin Megami Tensei games could be. As a result, it ended up not getting the response it probably deserved. Now it’s 2025 and SMT is practically mainstream thanks to the success of entries like Persona 4, Persona 5, and SMT V, and this spin-off series is getting a second chance with Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army. I’m so glad, because it seems like the remaster really emphasizes how entertaining it can be.

We’ve seen different types of devil summoners throughout the SMT mainline and spin-off series, and one of the interesting things about Raidou Remastered is it starts with someone who knows exactly what they’re getting into. Things begin with a person from the Kuzunoha Village going through tests to see if they are worthy of becoming the next person to take on the name of Raidou, allowing them to serve the village and country of Japan by protecting the capital from malicious demons and ill-intentioned individuals willing to use the supernatural in unscrupulous ways. It’s a tutorial to introduce each element of combat, while also get someone accustomed to the action-RPG where our avatar fights alongside two summoned demon allies. The combat system feels tight and responses, and even during my brief preview session I could find and buy Skill Books to add more spells to my initial demons’ movesets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ertwE1ZSY8&ab_channel=OfficialATLUSWest

It’s this combat system that feels quite different from installments like SMT V, Persona 5, and Devil Survivor. Turn-based is absent here. Directly controlling your demon allies? Nah, you’re mainly just suggesting or letting them do their thing. Raidou himself can use light and strong sword attacks, with even aerial and plunging ones being an option, pull out a gun for a succession of shots, and use elemental magic. Even capturing is more active than in other installments. You’ll need to run up during a fight to attempt to Confine a foe with a flurry of button mashing, with your level and expertise determining if it’s even possible or you have enough room for a foe. Loyalty ends up being a factor and mattering, with demon allies gaining it alongside experience as you fight together, allowing for bonuses once that relationship is maxed out by working alongside each other.

Demons also feel like partners in another way. As part of his new responsibilities as Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, he works at Narumi Detective Agency. His boss there, Shouhei Narumi, works with Yatagarasu, who manages agents like the Kuzunoha. As such, the cases taken tend to involve demonic involvement. This means that the story portion does involve investigating cases. Calling these demon allies to appear alongside you to perform actions, such as Ukobach to Ignite ion or fury in a person to get them to reveal details or Alp to read minds, or to switch control over to one of them for a Solo Investigation segment to access an area that Raidou can’t. Some especially relevant demons I encountered while going hands-on with the game, like characters we’ll encounter, feature voice acting.

My time with Raidou Remastered ended up being something of a limited session that involved only initially seeing what it’s like to fight alongside demons, take part in a larger investigation, and explore the counterpart of the Capital in the Dark Realm. This is a space between the human and demonic realms, and it’s something of a counterpart filled predominantly with hostile demons. (Friendly ones are there too, as a more amicable Pyro Jack and Alp appeared in my first journey into the area.) It serves as the dungeon experience, mirroring the real world and offering challenges to overcome with the right demon types or boss fights. Save points appear often here, and the quicksave feature is present both here and in most other parts in the “real” world.

Raidou Remastered seems like it will be a promising remaster from Atlus, as well as an opportunity to introduce a larger audience to an interesting Shin Megami Tensei game. From my early hands-on experience with it, I noticed it swiftly gets people introduced to the character, demons, world, and combat system. From there, it starts to set up a mystery while showing exactly why the Raidou Kuzunohas who apparently appeared over the years matter. It’ll be interesting to see how people respond once it drops in June 2025.

Raidou Remastered Free Summoner Titles DLC Dated

Atlus shared more details about Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, and that included free Summoner Title DLC. It will launch on July 3, 2025. The company also announced a Raidou Remastered social media contest that involves a chance to win a Raiho plush, which is a stuffed toy that makes a Jack Frost look like Raidou Kuzunoha XIV and is based on a fusion in-game, and shared some things we can unlock as we play.

In the case of the Raidou Remastered free DLC, it is called Demonic Designations: Summoner Titles. In March 2025, Atlus called for people to submit potential titles that could appear in-game on social media. This add-on will consist of those. Seven of them will be taken from people in North America who responded to the hashtag, and another three will be from Southeast Asia region responses. We don’t know which titles will be in it yet.

As for the unlocks, they are all things we can experience either in our first run or subsequent Raidou Remastered playthrough. As mentioned earlier, we can get Raiho in-game. However, we will need to unlock that special fusion to gain that ally. There will also be certain Case Files that are optional sidequests. As we explore and go through the game, we can pause and assist other people and demons with their troubles. Finally, beating the game once unlocks the Detective Legend difficulty. This will be the most challenging option.

In the city, we’ll get to go through Tsukudo-cho, which is where the Narumi Detective Agency headquarters is, Fukagawa-cho, Ginza-cho, Harumi-cho. You can play mahjong at headquarters, and that are a also features the Konnou-ya store. Ginza-cho is home of the Ryugu restaurant and Shin-Sekai Soda t. And in Fukagawa-cho, we’ll find Dr. Tsukumo and his Amazing Science Lab.

Finally, there is the Mysterious Cases contest for a Raiho Raidou Remastered plush, which ended up revealed on social media. That allows people in the US and Canada attempt to win one of three of these stuffed toys, provided they signed up for the Summoner’s Guild via the game’s official site. That is open until June 20, 2025, and Atlus will pick the three winners after.

Here’s the image of the Raiho plush:

Raidou Remastered Has Over 120 New and Old SMT Series Demons characters

Atlus announced new details about Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of The Soulless Army, and part of that confirmed over 120 demons taken from new and old Shin Megami Tensei games, including SMT V Vengeance, will appear. The company also discussed four of the characters present in this game and the Hell’s Pawns group. It also noted Raidou Kuzunoha can learn Summoner Skills this time around.

In the original Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, there were almost 80 demons available. (That number will be lower if you don’t consider the Legion variants from Fusion accidents different characters.) In Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of The Soulless Army, that number jumps by over 50 to bring the total number of demons from Shin Megami Tensei mainline games and SMT spin-offs up to over 120. Atlus specifically cited two games some will be pulled from, and they’re Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon and SMT V Vengeance. All demons you team up with can learn Combat and ive Special Skills to help fight. These are earned from Fusions and level-grinding, though you can also get Skill Books to teach them abilities. Loyalty influences ive Skill development as well.

Atlus shared art of some of the demons we’ll see in the game, and you can look at them below:

As for the newly mentioned characters, they include friends and enemies. Kaya’s uncle Kiyoshi Daidouji is head of the Daidouji family and its textiles company, and he’s trying to possibly help find her after the Hell’s Pawns took his niece. Kenzo Satake is an ally. He’s a yakuza with the Kanto Haguro Family who acts as an informant. Private Sadakichi is a former aware of Munakata’s Super Soldier Project and trying to alert the public as to what’s going on. Said project is also tied to the Hell’s Pawns enemies. Finally, there’s a strange creature called Red Cape terrorizing people around town.

Here are screenshots of those folks:

Finally, Atlus brought up Raidou Kuzunoha’s Summoner Skills. They’re somewhat similar to the ones demons learn, as there are two kinds. Combat Skills and Sword Skills both affect his skills and power in fights. With the Combat Skills, those can be changed during a fight. The Sword Skills are equipped outside of it. All of these are learned from crafted Sword Alchemy weapons.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of The Soulless Army will come to the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on June 19, 2025, though only Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X physical copies will be available. If you pre-order, you get Raidou Glasses for the character to wear. If you sign up for more details on the official site, you can read the manga based on the series.

Raidou Kuzunoha Manga Available Ahead of Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army

Sega announced a Summoners Guild promotion to help promote the Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, which is a remaster of the PS2 game Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army. People can sign up at the official site to get insight into the characters and game. The first promotion in honor of that gives all of us who sign up access to part of the Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Lone Marebito manga.

Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Lone Marebito is an interesting adaptation and take on this spin-off Shin Megami Tensei series. It originally started to debut in 2014, and Kadokawa handled it. (It’s even available on its Japanese site.) While volumes from the completed series can be found in Japan, it never ended up localized. It tells an original story set apart from the games.

This means that ing the Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army Summoners Guild grants us access to this Raidou Kuzunoha manga in English for the first time. The first chapter is being released as part of the promotion. Atlus also noted Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Latin American Spanish, and Spanish localizations of that chapter will also eventually be available to those who sign up. It is unknown if more chapters will appear as the game's release date draws nearer. In Japan, multiple volumes of the series appeared.

Here’s an image of an English Atlus shared alongside the reveal. It only shows Raidou and doesn't feature any of his demon companions.

While the manga is the first promotion, more are planned. The announcement mentioned other things tied to this spin-off and giveaways.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army will come to the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on June 19, 2025.

Atlus Shared More Raidou Remastered Details

After the reveal of Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army during the latest March 2025 Nintendo Direct, Atlus shared new details about the game in a new spotlight video. The “The Return of Raidou Kuzunoha” showcase is 22 minutes long and is now available in English.

The spotlight video starts by introducing the origins of the game as a PS2 title released in 2006. Back then, it was originally titled Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army. The game is a departure from Atlus’ more traditional turn-based RPGs due to being an action-RPG in which the player controls protagonist Raidou, who has the ability to summon Demons to fight alongside him. In combat, the demons battle automatically, and Raidou can issue orders to them in and out of combat to solve a variety of detective cases.

While Raidou Remastered is an update of the first game in the series, Atlus revealed that combat in this game will be based on the second title in the series, Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon. As such, it will feature plenty of changes. For example, Raidou will be able to summon two Demons during combat. Aside from a graphical update, Atlus announced plenty of UI changes to make the game more readable during combat.

Additionally, new Demons that appeared on titles such as Shin Megami Tensei V and other modern Atlus games will appear and players will be able to fuse or recruit them. Raidou will now be able to learn his own skills that exploit enemy weaknesses. Some other changes include fast travel, difficulty settings, auto-save functions, and more.
