Kotobukiya offered a Pokemon figure update on Pokemon Day 2025, which is the X and Y hero Calem and the starter Froakie. There’s no release window for it yet. However, since it is only in the unpainted prototype stage, it will likely be a while before we see it appear. It is one of many protagonists in the Pokemon ARTFX J line.

Calem is the first Pokemon X and Y person to appear as a Kotobukiya ARTFX J figure. His prototype build shows he’ll wear his default protagonist outfit. His hat will also feature sunglasses perched on it, just like in the official art. Froakie will be able to be posed at his feet. The preliminary photos showed that the starter will be able to be removed and displayed on its own, if someone would like.

Here are the initial photos of the character and Pokemon:

His counterpart in that entry has the canon name Serena.

The last character to appear in this collection was Florian, the male avatar option for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with Fuecoco. He appeared after the female avatar option Juliana, who showed up with Sprigatito as her partner. The next release in the series will mark the return of Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Gloria with Sobble.

Pokemon X and Y are available on the 3DS, and there’s no release window for the Calem and Froakie figure.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Starters We Want

Pokemon X & Y hold a really special place in my heart. I was still a teen, thrust out into the world and forced to figure everything out on my own. I was living in a hotel not sure what to do and barely starting to dive into video game journalism. It was a rough time and one of the few highlights then was X & Y. But the ultimately mess release of Pokemon X & Y can finally be fixed with Legends Z-A’s release.

I still the midnight launch I went to for Pokemon X & Y at the local mall like yesterday. I was living across the street and working there at the mall part-time. This rather low point in my life was rescued by Pokemon X & Y and Final Fantasy XIV, the latter of which you likely see me talk about all the time here.

However, I rarely talk about how important X & Y were to me. Despite being one of my least favorite games in the series, I played them more than any else. I spent upwards of a thousand hours in these two versions. I collected every Pokemon, completed the Pokedex for the first time, hunted for shinies for hundreds of hours, and so much more.

You could say I see the potential in these games more than most because of my time with it. The region of Kalos is beautifully messy. The experiment with 3D was rough but it still had some great towns and areas. I mean Lumiose City still is up there as one of the best, most unique cities in the franchise.

But there are so many flaws, too. For one, there is the unbelievably short length of the story. I beat it in about 15 hours the first time, which is far shorter than any other game to date. In addition, the region feels incomplete with the lack of a Southern Kalos area to explore. Not to mention, everything is so linear and far more than other entries. Of course, there is even easier than usual difficulty.

Pokemon X & Y feel more incomplete and rushed than any other entry in the series to date. This is especially noticeable in places like the Power Plant. There are also so few new Pokemon. It is all shame because what is here is excellent. The new Pokemon, including the legendaries and the likes of Hawlucha, Greninja, Aegislash, Mega Evolutions, and the Fairy typing are some of the best additions in the series’ history.

Pokemon Legends ZA can fix X & Y’s failures

Even the story had so much potential. The final cutscene with AZ after the battle is a real tearjerker. I mean, look at the anime adaptation and you will see this in, in my opinion, the best overall season of the entire anime series. With all of this said, Pokemon X & Y have a second chance with Legends Z-A.

If this game wants to be the best it can be, it should honestly just be a Pokemon X & Y sequel. This would be quite different from the previous Legends game that was both a prequel and the start of a new gameplay style. But this is the one chance to fix Pokemon X & Y‘s failures.

For starters, there is the lack of Mega Evolutions. Gen 6’s first games only saw the release of a handful of Megas and not a single one from this particular Generation other than Diancie. That is honestly a shame. Give the likes of the three Kalos starters, Noivern, Hawlucha, Florges, and perhaps some of the legendaries a Mega.

Furthermore, make Lumiose City fully explorable. From what we know, the game takes place entirely in the city. So, this means no Southern Kalos or Power Plant. However, if the entire city is explorable Grand Theft Auto-style, this makes up for that. Have interiors of buildings to explore, NPCs to get side quests from, and parks to adventure through.

Above all else, this game needs a challenge and to feel complete. I’m not sure it needs the Gym Challenge, but this would be a nice touch. If it doesn’t have Gyms, though, it needs an equivalent like much more trainer battles in the vein of the final one in Legends Arceus. The story needs to be more fleshed out as well with intriguing villains and arcs.

Pokemon Legends Z-A is finally the chance to give Kalos the proper treatment. More Mega Evolutions, a complete story, and a more detailed region to check out. All this while, hopefully, offering better visuals and performance than the original Pokemon X & Y, at least presumably on the Nintendo Switch 2. X & Y are the dark sheep of the Pokemon series, but it doesn’t have to remain that way if The Pokémon Company fixes those many mistakes with Legends Z-A.

Pokemon Legends Z-A launches for Nintendo Switch sometime in 2025.

Pokémon Bank

Don't run to the bank just yet. The Pokémon Bank application will survive the end of the Nintendo 3DS eShop. An announcement from The Pokémon Company's official Twitter and website confirmed that s will have Pokémon Bank access for free of charge when the 3DS eShop is shuttered in March 2023.

https://twitter.com/Pokemon_cojp/status/1493767114968158208

Pokémon Bank is a able 3DS application that allows players to store their collected Pokémon from multiple games online, rather than the local storage of their 3DS unit. Players can store up to 3,000 Pokémon online, on top of whatever storage space is available in the game itself. The app requires a subscription fee of $4.99 per year, and a 30-day free trial. Pokémon Bank also comes with Poké Transporter, a separate app that allows the transfer of Pokémon from Pokémon Black and White.

According to The Pokémon Company, the Pokémon Bank application and service will work normally until the 3DS eShop shuts down in March 2023. After that, the service will become free to use for anyone that already ed the app. The free period will last for an unspecified "limited" time.

The Pokémon Company didn't confirm if the Pokémon Bank  service itself will receive maintenance indefinitely after the 3DS eShop closure. But, for now, Pokémon X & Y players can continue to avail of those functions for at least another year or so, should they decide to start soon.

Pokémon Bank is still available on the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS and Wii U eShops are scheduled to close in March of 2023.

nintendo 3ds in 2020

While the Switch has been Nintendo's flagship games device for a little over three years, the 3DS has continued to play an important role as an affordable alternative, allowing the company to sell its software to the more cost-conscious consumer. That may no longer be the case in a few months.

In 2019, Nintendo sold 6.25 million units of 3DS software, with a significant chunk of that coming from 3DS owners picking up ever-popular hits like Pokémon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Mario Kart 7. This even lesser-known games like Tomodachi Life (which has been a surprisingly consistent seller since its 2013 release). While the system represented a fraction of Nintendo's overall software sales, the company indicated there was enough demand for its 3DS business to continue into 2020.

Halfway through 2020, the 3DS is still providing cost-conscious gamers with cheaper access to Nintendo's games, but not nearly to the same extent as it was last year. Nintendo's investor site indicates that the company sold 960,000 units of 3DS software during the first half of 2020—about 1% of Switch software sales during the same period.

Like last year, a lot of those sales came from the most popular Nintendo 3DS games. Here's a look at how they sold between January and March of 2020, along with life-to-date sales for each:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 100,000 | 12.55 million
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon - 70,000 | 8.77 million
Tomodachi Life - 40,000 | 6.59 million
Mario Kart 7 - 30,000 | 18.71 million
Super Mario 3D Land - 30,000 | 12.7 million
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - 20,000 | 9.59 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 20,000 | 13.34 million
Pokémon X/Pokémon Y - 10,000 | 16.45 million
Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire - 10,000 | 14.27 million

Interestingly, these are the last-known updates we have for the aforementioned games. Nintendo hasn't provided updated sales figures for them beyond March 2020, which could mean they're not selling enough any more to be worth noting. (This is a strong indicator that this will be the 3DS' last year on the market.) Regardless, here are some interesting observations from the data we do have:

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold 110,000 units during the January - March quarter in 2019. During the same period in 2020, it sold 100,000 units—only 10,000 units less. It's likely that Nintendo's marketing efforts for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch led to increased awareness of New Leaf as well, leading to a large number of people still buying the older game.
  • New Leaf can currently be bought for $20 on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This makes it a cheap entry point for anyone that wants to try the series out, but isn't willing to gamble a full $60 on the newer Switch game. It's the perfect example of why the 3DS still exists.
  • Despite being one of the strangest, most obtuse games on the 3DS, Nintendo has sold 6.59 million units of Tomodachi Life to date. In due time, there's an opportunity for the brand to find an audience on the Switch.
  • While Nintendo sold 960,000 units of 3DS software during the first half of 2020, it only sold 160,000 units of hardware. (Down 64% from the same time frame in 2019) That's another strong indicator that this will be the device's last year on the market.
  • In contrast to the 3DS' stronger software sales, the company has only moved 200,000 units of Wii U software since September 2019. A lot of those sales came from Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U, Splatoon, Nintendo Land, and Mario Party 10, each of which have sold just 10,000 units apiece over the last several months.

While Nintendo ceased to manufacture Wii U consoles in 2017, ending the troubled platform's run at just 13.56 million consoles sold, the 3DS sits at 75.87 million units sold worldwide and is still being produced. Given the drop in both hardware and software, though, it is likely this won't be the case much longer. This would leave the Switch and Switch Lite as the only two Nintendo devices on the market after 2020.

Back in May, a Pokémon distribution event allowed people to pick up Darkrai from GameStop stores. In August, The Pokémon Company said the Pokémon Trainer Club’s September newsletter would include a code that would give people a second chance to obtain Darkrai by November 30, 2016. Now, a third opportunity has appeared to get Darkrai via another code. People with Pokémon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, and Omega Ruby can now use the code Darkrai20 to collect a Darkrai. This code can be input when you select Mystery Gift from the main menu. This Darkrai arrives at level 100, has the Bad Dreams ability, and knows Dark Void, Feint Attack, Ominous Wind, and Nightmare. Darkrai20 can only be used to get Darkrai in Pokémon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, and Omega Ruby until October 31, 2016. If you’ve already received Darkrai through the May GameStop distribution or September Pokémon Trainer Club newsletter, you can’t receive it again.
