Wishiwashi Is on My Favorite Pokemon TCG Pocket Celestial Guardians Cards a

I would never expected Wishiwashi to be my star of the Pokemon TCG Pocket Celestial Guardians expansion, but both cards based on it in the set are shockingly impressive. The synergy between the two is perfect. With a little effort, you could easily creep up on opponents with a combination of Wishiwashi and Wishiwashi ex. Plus, both work quite well with existing cards in the set.

Basically, this pair of cards becomes a duo to build an entire deck around in Pokemon TCG Pocket. Wishiwashi is only a 30 HP basic with one move, which lets you Call for Family for a single water energy to summon either Wishiwashi or Wishiwashi ex. The 170 HP Wishiwashi ex is your star, since School Storm starts at 30 damage for three water energy, but then deals an additional 40 damage for every extra Wishiwashi or Wishiwashi ex on the bench.

Since you know this would be a Wishiwashi-focused deck, it does mean spending a bit on Celestial Guardians. Your goal would be, ideally I think, to have at least two Wishiwashi ex cards and between four and five Wishiwashi. This way, you could always try and have one Wishiwashi in your active position and enough on the bench to get 150 damage dealt each turn.

What’s wonderful about this pair is how they work with others already released. Include some Misty cards from Genetic Apex! This can help you get the three water energy you need for Wishiwashi ex’s attack from your Energy Zone more quickly. Want to get the Wishiwashi out of the way of the Wishiwashi ex? Use Leaf to let it retreat for free. And of course you want to have some Poke Ball item cards if you stacked your deck with these two types, since both are Basic Pokemon.

I also love how it’s easy to add a handy friend who isn’t a Wishiwashi, just in case you want a little extra coverage. The Space-Time Smackdown Regice, with its Crystal Body and 50 damage Frost Smash for two water energy, or the Manaphy that could use the one water energy Oceanic Gift to help add water energy to benched Wishiwashi ex cards could be great. Also, the Celestial Guardians Pyukumuku, with its Innards Out ability that deals 50 damage to an opponent who knocks it out, could help bide time as you add Wishiwashi to your bench.

I didn’t expect Wishiwashi to be so much fun in Pokemon TCG Pocket, but preparing a deck with the two Celestial Guardians cards based on it really made my day. It ended up being so much testing which additional cards would work and seeing if I had everything that would make a deck a force to be reckoned with in-game. I love that it ended up getting so much attention here, and that it’s so easy to help ensure it is a viable combo with other expansions’ options.

Pokemon TCG Pocket and the Celestial Guardians expansion are available now on mobile devices.

The Pokemon Company International announced the next Pokemon TCG Pocket expansion is called Celestial Guardians, and it includes cards based on Pokemon Sun and Moon characters. That arrives worldwide on April 30, 2025. The official trailer showed two types of packs with Lunala and Solgaleo on the front, suggesting this is one where we’ll choose which of two types of packs to open for cards.

The first trailer for the new expansion also teased some of the cards we’ll see based on Pokemon Sun and Moon characters in Pokemon TCG. For example, the full Litten, Popplio, and Rowlet evolutionary lines will be present. The video started by showing the three cards representing them. Lunala and Solgaleo are also confirmed, and both Lunala ex and Solgaleo ex showed up. That card showed it evolves from a Cosmoem, confirming it and Cosmog will be present. Alolan Marowak, Alolan Meowth, Alolan Raichu, Alolan Vulpix, and two Oricorio appeared as well. As for Trainer cards, Acerola, Ilima, Kiawe, Lana, Lillie, Mallow, Sophocles, Rare Candy, and Rotom Dex will be present. The official tweet also hinted at Ultra Beast appearances.

Pokemon Trading Card Game TCG Pocket merchandise in Japan

The Pokemon Company revealed a new lineup of merchandise themed after Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. It will sell these items in its Japanese physical and online Pokemon Center stores in early April 2025.

The primary highlights of this lineup will be the Paper Theater sets that emulate the special backgrounds that appear in rare versions of the Pikachu ex, Charizard ex, and Mewtwo ex cards. It will also include a strap that literally lets the buyer attach a Pikachu ex card on the back side of their smartphone.

This lineup also comes with a big caveat. The Japanese Genetic Apex packs and the Pokemon coins you see in the above image are not actual products, as they will only appear as stickers packed inside a zipper pouch. The buyer can, however, technically emulate the in-game coins by applying the coin stickers on the actual playing coins.

Here is the complete list of items in the lineup, with prices listed in Japanese yen:

  • Paper Theater (Pikachu ex / Charizard ex / Mewtwo ex) - ¥5,500
  • Pouch with stickers (Pikachu / Charizard / Mewtwo sets) - ¥1,100
  • Smartphone shoulder strap - ¥2,200
  • Sacoche shoulder bag - ¥3,300
  • Pack Hourglass keychain - ¥990

The new merchandise lineup themed after the Android and iOS mobile game Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket will be available first on the Japanese Pokemon Center Online site on April 3, 2025. The Pokemon Company will also bring it to physical Pokemon Center stores across Japan on April 5, 2025.

Pokémon Trading Card Pocket Themed Booster Pack Triumphant Light

During Pokemon Presents 2025, The Pokemon Company revealed Triumphant Light, which is an expansion for Pokemon Trading Card Pocket. This new set is a supplementary expansion to Spacetime Smackdown, introducing even more Generation 4 Pokémon, trainers from Pokémon Legends Arceus, and Arceus EX itself.

We can begin to open Triumphant Light booster packs as soon as February 28, 2025. In addition to the new expansion, Ranked Battles have been announced for March 2025, though details have yet to be revealed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urmBeWH0bxw

Triumphant Light heavily focuses on Arceus EX, with many cards in the set featuring "Link" abilities that require Arceus in play to activate. For example, Abomasnow's attack requires one less energy while Arceus or Arceus EX is in play thanks to its "Vigor Link" ability.

Triumphant Light also adds a new set of Solo Battles featuring cards from the expansion. Players can also expect new binders, deck covers, player icons, and various other customization options inspired by Generation 4 Pokémon.

The most noteworthy cards include Arceus EX, Leafeon EX, Garchomp EX, Probo EX, Glaceon EX, and trainers from Pokémon Legends Arceus, such as Adaman and Irida.

Notably, Probo EX is a brand new addition to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, with no physical cards or appearances in other PTCG games.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket is available to play for free on Android and iOS devices, and Triumphant Light expansion booster packs arrive on February 28, 2025.

Free Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Trade Tokens Delivered

The Pokemon Company International announced a free gift of Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Trade Tokens for all players. This comes after the company announced there would be changes made to the trading feature following negative from those who attempted to use it.

Currently, in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket a player needs to acquire Trade Tokens if they want to start trading valid cards with people set as friends. However, you need between 25 and 1,500 of these items to trade depending on the rarity of the card, and both people participating in the swap need that amount. The primary means of getting them is to exchange duplicates of cards you collected and selecting Trade Tokens as the item you want from them.

On January 31, 2025, The Pokemon Company International first addressed about the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Trade Tokens and system. It itted that the choices meant people weren’t able to “casually enjoy the feature.” This gift of 1,000 Trade Tokens is designed to make it easier for people to swap cards in the meantime. That original announcement also noted that eventually events will give away the item to make things easier for folks.

In the meantime, a number of events are running. One is a Space-Time Smackdown Emblem Event tied to collecting new cards from the latest expansion pack. That runs until February 24, 2025. There is also a Cresselia ex Drop Event with promo cards that can be earned through Solo Battles.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket is available for mobile devices worldwide.

You now have a better chance of getting a Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Cresselia ex card via a new Drop Event.

In Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, there will sometimes be promotional events to get certain cards, and the latest one is a Cresselia ex Drop Event. How it works is until February 16, 2025, taking part in Solo Battles can net you a chance at getting the featured card.

So here’s how it works. You need to play through the tutorial until you can access the Solo Battle function in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Once you do, you will find some battles offer the option to win a Promo Pack A Series Vol 4. While it says it is a pack, it isn’t like a typical one in the game. You’ll only get one random card out of it.

The Cresselia ex card is one of the options shown in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Solo Battle Drop Event. Other highlighted ones include Electivire, Misdreavus, Skarmory, and Turtwig. All of these cards feature a special promo insignia in the bottom right corner of the character art. If you miss one during the event, these can be found randomly in the Space-Time Smackdown expansion booster packs in-game.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket is available on mobile devices, and the Cresselia ex Drop Event ends on February 16, 2025.

This McDonald’s Happy Meal collection isn’t the only big development for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The Prismatic Evolutionsexpansion is out now, and high demand has led to availability issues for it. Trading and more boosters are also headed to Pokemon TCG Pocket.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Trades Need Items

The Pokemon Company International issued an update on Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, and it covered the trade feature and teased new booster packs. Both are on the way, though there will be items and limitations when we choose to swap cards.

In the case of trading in Pokemon TCG Pocket, we can’t just do any types of trades with anyone and any cards, and a consumable item will be needed. So if you don’t have the as-yet-unnamed item or friends, you can’t participate in a swap. You also can only trade cards of equivalent value, so you can’t give a “gift” to your friend of a one star card for a one or two diamond one.

The other limitations are tied to the types of cards that you can trade. Ones with a rarity of one through four diamonds can be swapped for equivalent ones. One star cards can also be traded for other single star ones. The only booster packs at the launch of the feature that can be traded are Genetic Apex and Mythical Island, which are the only two types available at the moment.

As for future Pokemon TCG Pocket cards, there will be new booster packs headed to the game. However, we don’t know what these additions will look like. The Pokemon Company International only noted that an update is planned for January 2025.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Starters We Want

It’s no secret The Pokémon Company and Game Freak largely ignored 2024. If it weren’t for Pokemon TCG Pocket, 2024 would’ve likely gone down as possibly the worst year in the history of the franchise. And this is even if the infamous leaks never happened. Thankfully, Pokemon has the chance to make 2025 a major comeback year with releases like Pokemon Legends Z-A and much more.

Take a look back at 2024 and there isn’t much to talk about. The Horizons anime did its thing alongside updates for the typical free-to-play titles. Of course, there was the monumental release of Pokemon TCG Pocket, which saved the year for the company. But no major DLC for Scarlet & Violet, remasters, remakes, other spin-offs, and so on.

The lack of releases in general wouldn’t be so bad on its own. After all, this has happened before in years like 2005 and 2015. That said, it has been almost 10 years of something new for players to enjoy outside of mobile titles every single year. But the worst part of it all has been the general radio silence from the company.

Sure, the leaks do play some role in this. However, TPC and Game Freak can’t put all of the blame on those leaks. After all, they happened in October 2024. That doesn’t even for the lack of new info on games like Pokemon Legends Z-A from its initial reveal in late February 2024 to October 2024. That is about eight months TPC could’ve given the fan base something.

As such, we're going into 2025 when this game is supposed to release without almost any information about it. Nothing official about the starters, time period, characters, new Mega Evolutions, and so on. As such, 2024 will likely go down as one of the most disappointing years for Pokemon in the franchise’s history, if not the clear cut winner.

That is why it is so imperative 2025 goes all out to turn this around. Sure, it is not quite the 30th anniversary of the series — that’s next year in 2026 — but there is still so much that can happen. The obvious part is Legends Z-A needs to be one of the best games in the series. It needs to take the open-world collectathon vibes of Legends Arceus and amp it up a notch. Make battles more prominent, have a great story, and generally feel like the second chance Generation VI desperately needs.

Image via The Pokémon Company

But it shouldn't stop there. We are long past due for some older titles to come to Switch. Whether on the Switch 2 or on the original Switch, we need to see Generations I-III come to the Nintendo Switch Online service. This should’ve happened in 2024 to avoid such a long drought, but better late than never regardless. I could even see these NSO releases be an exclusive for Switch 2 only, which would be a shame, but I’ll take what I can get.

Of course, the juggernaut that is Pokemon TCG Pocket shouldn't stop, either. New sets, events, and cards are inevitable. The main new feature I’d like to see beyond trading is a release on Switch and Switch 2. Sure, the game is designed to be played in portrait, but some adjusting can be done with the background to make it work in a landscape viewpoint on Switch. If anything, this could explain its release long after the mobile version.

Finally, I’d like to see some sort of surprise from the company in 2025. This could be in the form of an early Generation 10 announcement ahead of 2026 or a new spin-off game. My personal wish would be for a new Mystery Dungeon or a remaster of Pokemon Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness. That said, I’d even settle for a Pokken Tournament 2, which would be a great Switch 2 launch title to mirror what happened in 2017 with the original Switch.

Regardless, 2025 is The Pokémon Company’s chance to redeem an almost historically abysmal 2024. Pokemon Legends Z-A should absolutely be the headliner for the year, but far from the only showstopper. Other releases and announcements like older games, spin-off titles, and impressive updates for TCG Pocket are equally a must.

Pokemon Legends Z-A will release sometime in 2025 for Nintendo Switch.

Pokemon TCG Scarlet & Violet Journey Together Expansion Also Coming to Pocket

The Pokemon Company International announced the release date for the Pokemon Trading Card Game expansion Scarlet & Violet Journey Together and confirmed it will be available in the Pokemon TCG Live game as well. The physical copies launch on March 28, 2025, which is one day after its debut in the app on March 27, 2025. Booster packs and an Elite Trainer Box will be available.

Each expansion for the Pokemon TCG tends to have a certain theme or element that makes it noteworthy, and the draw for Scarlet & Violet Journey Together is Trainer’s Pokemon. These are special types of cards in which a specific iconic character from the games will also be mentioned, signifying this is their particular Pokemon. Some of the cards confirmed for this set are Hop’s Zacian ex, Iono’s Bellibolt ex, Lillie’s Clefairy ex, and N’s Zoroark ex.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen cards like this in the game. One of the best examples is the Gym Heroes expansion, which debuted in Japan in 1998. That set featured ones based on the original Pokemon game. So when you bought packs, you might get ones like Brock’s Onix, Misty’s Psyduck, or Sabrina’s Mr. Mime.

The Pokemon Company International also already mentioned how many of certain types of cards we can expect. There will be the four aforementioned Trainer’s Pokemon ex cards. There will also be 16 standard ex ones. 11 will be illustration rare ones, six will be special illustration rares, and three will be hyper rare gold etched.

Here is how the expansion pack booster packs will look:

Pokemon TCG Live is available on PCs worldwide and will get Scarlet & Violet Journey Together on March 27, 2025, while physical copies of the expansion will be sold for the trading card game on March 28, 2025.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket is one of the best surprises of this year. It is an extraordinary free mobile experience that takes the TCG based on the Pokemon series and transforms it into a bite-sized, highly stylish version. While the mobile title is quite impressive already at launch, Pokemon TCG Pocket still needs trading to be perfect.

It is a bit ironic that a card game that has the literal word “trading” in its title lacks that right now. In fact, it emphasizes the battling side of the card game more than the actual trading aspect. Fortunately, we already know that trading is coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket at some point. The questions now are when will that happen and what will it look like?

Trading has always been a key aspect of the Pokemon series, both in the mainline games and the card version. It is one of the best ways to connect players together in a multiplayer format. After all, everyone benefits from being able to trade in a mobile game like this. You might have cards I need while I might have cards that you need.

Editor’s Note: This was written prior to the announcement of trading’s release in January 2025.

Card booster packs are completely randomized. You might get a gorgeous Articuno EX card but you run a Fire-based deck, so that is useless to you. Instead, you might want a card like Charizard or Moltres EX. Trading would allow you to instantly be able to offer your Articuno EX for a card that is more suitable to your particular deck.

This feature should work in a safe manner, though. I see two ways it could work. The first would be to allow friends only to trade with one another while both are online at the same time. You could show off your cards to each other in real-time, and maybe even be able to message or react in the trade window.

This method would require some failsafes, such as multiple checks to confirm you want to trade so you aren’t scammed. This is also why it should be restricted to only friends. On the other hand, the other method I would like to see is the Pokemon TCG Pocket equivalent of the GTS. A global trading network for the mobile title would be fantastic.

People could put up cards they want to get rid of and note what card they are looking for. It would have to be rather specific, though, down to the rarities and the like. But perhaps there could also be a way to send a personalized offer to the person. Maybe you don’t have the card they want but you have a similarly valuable one. Perhaps then the person could consider the trade. However, if you have the exact card, you can initiate the trade automatically.

This would be a neat way for everyone to get the cards they need. It would also the make the game less pay-to-win, so to speak. I don’t think Pokemon TCG Pocket is in any way a pay-to-win experience. However, there is no arguing that the more money you spend on packs, the more chances you have at finding the best cards.

Adding this global trading system would let the community balance out some. Everyone would have the chance to get the cards they need and want. It would also be great in the event the title ever removes certain expansion packs, which, hopefully, does not happen.

As for when Pokemon TCG Pocket trading should release, it has to happen sooner than later. The game came out at the tail end of October 2024. That leaves roughly two months left in the year for it to release. I think it is imperative that trading comes to Pokemon TCG Pocket before the year ends. The arrival of trading would greatly reinvigorate the community and be the possible addition for the already highly successful experience.
