The Switch is well-known for its excellent selection of JRPGs, and traditionally these feature turn-based combat. However, in recent years, favor has turned to action RPGs and turn-based games have been pushed to the side; even Pokémon’s next game has real-time combat. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t excellent 3D turn-based JRPGs. On the contrary there are many excellent games on the Switch from the genre. Here are our 10 favorite 3D turn-based JRPGs available on Nintendo Switch. 

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk 1k91f

As we excitedly wait for the next entry in the series, Atelier Yumia, we had to add one of these games to the list. While the more recent entries in the Atelier series are all action combat, the series is best known for its turn-based roots. Most games from the series are available on Switch, but we’ve chosen Atelier Ayesha as the representative for this list, as the beginning of the glorious Dusk Trilogy.

As the name suggests, the series is about people working in ateliers, and there is a strong emphasis on collecting resources out in the world in order to craft items and potions that you can use in battle. This means that the strategic layer to the game is evident both in and out of combat. One of the best things about Atelier Ayesha is that once you’re finished there are plenty of other games in the series to enjoy.

Everyone talks about Paper Mario – in particular The Thousand-Year Door – but the game that the series was built from hardly gets mentioned. Super Mario RPG originally launched on the SNES, when very few games were made with 3D graphics. It was a risk in many ways. There was not only the question of whether people would be interested in a turn-based Super Mario game, but the game also went against many long-standing RPG traditions.

Timing is crucial in Super Mario RPG, not only when you attack but when you defend as well. It adds an extra level of strategy to the game, and is something that few RPGs do. Separating it further from other RPGs is just how much damage is dealt and taken. Attacks often deal single-digit numbers, far from other bombastic RPGs that could see people hit for thousands. Super Mario RPG is not only one of the best turn-based JRPGs but the Switch version gives it several modern updates that fans love. The perfect place to start in your Mario RPG journey.

For many people Persona 5 is the pinnacle of the always excellent Persona series, and Persona 5 Royal improves on the already excellent game. Persona 5 returns to the dungeon crawling formula of the original Persona games, with carefully crafted dungeons rather than the seemingly never-ending procedural abysses of the modern Persona series, namely Persona 3 and Persona 4. This is one of the main reasons that Persona 5 has risen above the pack.

Persona 5 tells a beautiful, complex, and exceptionally long story about the power of friendship overcoming the status quo. Royal not only adds a new protagonist, but new social links, and additional scenes giving fans of the game even more to sink their teeth into. It runs flawlessly on the Switch, and its length means that the home to handheld feature of the console makes it the perfect way to play. Become part of the Phantom Thieves, and change society’s hearts.

All mainline Pokémon games on the Switch are 3D turn-based JRPGs, and most of them are great, but we chose to highlight Pokémon Legends: Arceus as a completely fresh take on Pokémon’s formula. Instead of battling your way through a series of Gym Leaders before reaching the Elite Four and becoming the champion, you will be roaming around semi-open areas, catching Pokémon and studying them for the Pokédex.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus not only changes the focus to catching, but also changes Pokémon’s standard battle system. Battles are still turn-based, but they have an active system with Strong- and Agile-style moves. While the Pokémon and their movesets are the same as other games, what each move does is completely different in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. If you’ve tried out the mainline Pokémon games, and want something a little different, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the way to go.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses zm5h

Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo’s flagship series, and Three Houses is one of the series’ best. It has all of the turn-based strategic battles that the series is known for, as well as the ability to bond with your teammates to level them up, but as the name suggests, Three Houses has three different paths you can follow, adding to its replayability.

Fire Emblem is well known for its brutal permadeath system, where if your characters die in battle, they die in real life too. However, Three Houses included a Casual Mode where nobody can be gone for good. You can still have the traditional experience, but if like many people the permadeath turned you off from the series, this is the perfect entry point.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 6n3o49

The Legend of Heroes series is one of the longest running, beginning in the ‘80s, and many of them are available on the Switch. We have chosen Trails Through Daybreak to represent the series in this list, not just because it is one of the best, but because it is a great place to start as it begins a separate arc. Interestingly, Trails Through Daybreak is the only game on this list, which allows the player to choose between real-time combat similar to Nihon Falcom’s other major JRPG series Ys, or the turn-based combat the series is known for.

The series is known for its excellent characters and strategic combat, and Trails Through Daybreak exemplifies both of these. If you haven’t played the series before, you won’t understand every reference, but the developers have tried to make it one of the most accessible in the series in of the story and combat. It won’t take 30 years of video game knowledge to understand how good the intricate and complex writing is.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII Remastered 73386u

If you’re reading this list, you probably don’t need to be told how good Final Fantasy VII or even Final Fantasy VIII are. We’ll be holding our breaths a long time if we’re hoping for the excellent Final Fantasy VII Remake to come to Switch, but this console is one of the best places you can experience the original FF7. It can be purchased in a double pack with FF8, which is the game long-time fans of the series often point to as the best.

Both games have very different turn-based systems, which can create devastating synergies in different ways. FF7’s combat system is easier to use and more difficult to master. Creating devastating combinations requires good knowledge of Materia, Enemy Skills, and equipment that can link them in a way that stack. Conversely, FF8 is based on the Junction system, one that is difficult to grasp, but once you do, building up major damage is much simpler. Both can be purchased together at such a low cost, that it’s worth trying them out.

Monark received middling reviews when it was released, and that’s because people found the battles too difficult. However, the battles are actually one of Monark’s greatest strengths, and where it fails is in explaining its systems properly. Once you understand how it works, and how your characters best synergize, it is one of the most satisfying turn-based strategy systems out there. The protagonist of Monark can Resonate with the other party sharing buffs across all characters, leading to extremely devastating damage.

Similar to the Persona series, Monark focuses on the character’s personal stories. Each character is based on one of the seven deadly sins, and each has a dark past. Despite this, they all band together to take on the forces that are keeping the students trapped in school and sucking the life out of them. Created by former Shin Megami Tensei developers, this one is perfect for those who enjoy diving deeply into combat systems.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 6m6kd

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is what happens when legendary anime maker Studio Ghibli teams up with the studio that created the epic turn-based JRPG Jeanne D’arc. Both Wrath of the White Witch and Revenant Kingdom are available on Switch, but we picked the first in the series as the best place to start. Ni No Kuni has an interesting battle system unlike the others on this list, it’s not just because it mixes turn-based and action combat.

Ni No Kuni’s combat features beastly familiars, and magical characters; think about it like if Pokémon let the trainers in the scrap. If you like the taming and training aspect of beastly battlers then this is another one you should try. Above all Ni No Kuni overwhelms players with its charm, and is a must play turn-based title.

The Caligula Effect: Overdose 6o6q1k

Written by Tadashi Satomi, best known for working on the original Persona series, The Caligula Effect: Overdose follows a group of people who have realized that they are living in the Matrix. Despite knowing that the world they inhabit is fake, there is no way to escape. First, they must take down the Ostinato Musicians, a group of people who want to keep the idyllic world alive.

Overdose adds a lot to the story beyond the original The Caligula Effect, including new party and chapters that you can play from the point of view of the Musicians. You grow closer to your teammates, and learn more about their lives both inside and outside of the world you can currently see. The Caligula Effect: Overdose has an active turn-based system where timing and sequencing play a major role in your success or failure. It can be difficult, but once you master it, it’s very satisfying.

Those of us using Pokemon Home can get rare rewards for using the app as usual, as two distribution events are in effect for Shiny versions of Manaphy and Enamorus. As these are tied to progress made in the Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Switch games, it is possible you can immediately claim one or both of them. Both campaigns are live as of January 28, 2025. They are also each available worldwide.

The Shiny Manaphy is earned via getting all 151 Pokemon in the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Pokedex. If you collected and ed them to Pokemon Home already, you’re set. You can claim the level 50 Manaphy that knows moves like Acid Armor, Bubble Beam, Water Pulse, and Whirlpool. 

The Shiny Enamorus is available in Pokemon Home if the Pokemon Legends: Arceus Pokedex is complete there. That consists of 242 characters. It arrives at level 50, just like the Manaphy. Its moves include Crunch, Draining Kiss, Extrasensory, and Moonblast.

Pokemon Home is available on the Switch and mobile devices.  Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are both on the Nintendo Switch worldwide. There’s no end date mentioned for the Pokemon Home Shiny Manaphy and Enamorous distribution events.

The Pokemon Company revealed that Nintendo has added the original soundtrack of Pokemon Legends Arceus to its Nintendo Music mobile app. People who have access to the app can now listen to music tracks from the open-world Pokemon game that has been available on Nintendo Switch since 2022.

Nintendo has been regularly adding soundtracks from its first-party titles to Nintendo Music ever since it launched the app on October 31, 2024. A new title s the ever-growing list almost every week, except for the 2025 New Year holidays.

Earlier in January 2025, Nintendo added tracks from Super Mario Kart on January 21, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on January 14, and Super Donkey Kong 3 on January 7. In December 2024, it also added soundtracks from titles like Splatoon 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

The Nintendo Music app also has some of the tracks a Length Change feature, where the can listen to the same track with a game-like seamless loop for a prolonged duration up to 60 minutes. However, people can only access the app with a Nintendo that also has a valid and active Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Pokemon Legends Arceus, which is readily available worldwide on Nintendo Switch, now has its soundtrack available on the Android and iOS app Nintendo Music.

Pocketpair shared an update on the Pokemon v. Palworld patent infringement lawsuit. The company behind Palworld specified the patents mentioned by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo when the companies filed the lawsuit in September 2024.

The patent numbers in question are 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390. People can search for the specific patents on the Japan Platform for Patent Information by using the Patent Numbers (特許番号). The Japanese site also contains English language , albeit with automatic machine translations.

The official database confirms that while Nintendo and The Pokemon Company had originally filed the patents in December 2021, they renewed the patent registrations in 2024. These patents specifically cover world map activities in the 2022 Switch game Pokemon Legends: Arceus, such as the capture and battle processes using the world's creatures, and transportation using avian and aquatic creatures.

Pocketpair also revealed the demands made in the Pokemon v. Palworld lawsuit by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo. The latter companies want the former to pay at least 5 million yen to each of them for reparations; that means a combined minimum total of 10 million yen (~$65,590). In addition, the companies also demand an injunction against Palworld, which means that Pocketpair might have to take the game down if it completely loses the lawsuit.

Palworld has been available worldwide as an early-access title on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5. However, the game's availability is at stake with this Pokemon v. Palworld lawsuit.

Warm and cover your feet with a set of Paldean introductory Pokemon. A new set of Pokemon socks is debuting at the Pokemon Center online store focuses on the starter Pokemon from Scarlet and Violet, among others.

The lead items in the new batch of designs are sets of "mascot socks" based on the Scarlet and Violet starters: Sprigatito (aka Nyaoha), Fuecoco (aka Hogator), and Quaxly (aka Kuwassu). Each pair features a plush face of the Pokemon near the opening of the sock. When worn, the face will appear above the foot and on the leg of the wearer. Two versions of each starter sock exist, based on the buyer's length preference.

Other mascot socks based on non-Paldean Pokemon like Spheal, Togepi, and Mew are also available.

Two pairs of short socks feature scenes. One pair features Fidough in a pile of bread, and another features Paldean Woopers digging.

More low-key designs are also available at the Pokemon Center online store. The newest ones are based on Gengar, Diglett, Snorlax, Ditto, and all nine extant Evee variants. These socks have a mostly plain exterior but feature small designs and logo-style patches based on the faces of the relevant Pokemon.

Tabi socks, socks with a pocket for the big toe, also appear. Two new pairs feature designs based on Hisuian Growlithe and Hisuian Voltorb and Electrode.

An array of plush toys based on Hisuian Pokemon from Pokemon Legends: Arceus debuted in the Pokemon Center outside Japan. The website now sells stuffed versions of new characters like Sneasler and Ursaluna. In addition, the Hisuian variants of different characters like Arcanine, Electrode, Goodra, Lilligant, and Sneasel also appeared. All are immediately available, with no pre-order period.

The prices for the new Hisuian Pokemon plush varies, depending on the size and level of intricacy involved. For example, the smallest is actually the Hisuian Electrode, at just under 8 inches tall. It’s $19.99. Meanwhile, the Hisuian Arcanine is the tallest, at 14 and a half inches, and costs $44.99.

This isn't the first time a plush of a Hisuian Pokemon appeared. Not long after Pokemon Legends: Arceus released, merchandise started showing up in Japan. The Pokemon Company decided to answer the question “How many Pokemon are there” by sharing a video showing all 1008 currently available. As one might expect, the Scarlet and Violet new characters get the most focus. However, the almost nine minute long video does show every one currently available, including regional variants from games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

As one might expect, the new video begins with ones appearing in games like Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. In-game footage is used for all characters. In the case of Pokemon with variants, like Alcremie or even Spinda, there are segments showing off some of the different possible appearance options. Regional variants start to show up around the four minute mark. Ultra Beasts from Sun and Moon begin to appear at the 4:30 point, followed by legendaries from different installments.

By the 6:18 mark, the video shifts to the Paldea region. It spends the rest of the 8:44 video offering more focused looks at the new characters introduced in Scarlet and Violet. At the 8:06 mark, spoilers start to appear. No new Pokemon appear in the video.

Winner: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 512g27

Weaving together the first two games while also building out its own world was a tall task for Xenoblade Chronicles 3. But hey, it somehow managed it! It delivers a heaping helping of game, without making the all-too-common misstep of diluting quality or generally spreading itself too thin. Memorable characters! Battle systems with so many options that you probably won't see them all! This is the sort of stuff players wanted to see from the franchise's latest installment, and they got it. This, along with so many other successes, earns it the title of Siliconera's 2022 Game of the Year.

Not the game you were expecting here? Understandable! Its tech limitations make it less of a great Switch game than a game in general, but we can't deny just how much fun we had playing Pokemon Legends Arceus. It may have been intended as an experimental side game to try out ideas for Scarlet and Violet, but we hope the Legends formula continues to see life in its own sub-franchise.

According to the product description, the material is resin, and it has recreated the look of the wooden base and the metallic trim. This is only for decorative purposes. You cannot open up the Poke Ball.

The Pokemon Legends: Arceus Poke Ball replica will come with a display stand. It is around three inches in diameter, which makes it the right size to place around your house or apartment. It states that there is a purchase limit of two. However, it does not state if this s for each customer or each household.

In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which takes place in the Sinnoh region of the past, trainers have to actually construct their own Poke Balls. The mechanism of the ball itself is the same as more “modern” Pokemon games, but the design is obviously different. For one thing, it appears to have a latch of sorts on the front, whereas newer Poke Balls have a button.

Another Pokemon game upon us, and it’s going to be a little different than folks expect. Taking what it learned from Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are going to be a bit different. You’ll have different main “storylines” you can follow. It’s more of an open-world game, allowing you to choose what you do and where you go whenever you like. The battle system is also more like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, as things happen in the moment instead of in a specific battle screen. But it might leave you wondering if you should buy Pokemon Scarlet or Violet, or if another entry would be better for you.

Do You Want a More Traditional Pokemon Experience? 6p615v

I’d say go with Pokemon Sword or Shield. these are the traditional Pokemon games on the Switch. You’re a young adult again! You head out to challenge the Pokemon league! The battle system is the same as usual! The multiplayer is limited to raids, trading, and regular competitive fights. It should work out for you.

Is Your Only Pokemon Experience with Pokemon GO? 715g4p

Pick up Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Eevee!. This is a reimagining of Pokemon Yellow, one of the original Game Boy games. You won’t have to worry about a ton of Pokemon. Capturing will be like you in Pokemon GO, tossing balls until you get what you want. You can even bring your characters from Pokemon GO into it. It’s a very relaxed experience.

Do You Want a Pokemon Scarlet or Violet-like Experience, but Different? 3g1n1z

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet seems like an experimental pair of games. If you want to continue that trend and play something that is Pokemon, but not like Pokemon, get Pokemon Legends: Arceus or New Pokemon Snap. The former is a more freeform game with missions, specific areas to explore, Pokemon to catch and fight, and a more action-RPG vibe. The latter is an on-rails “shooter,” except you’re essentially a Pokemon paparazzi snapping pictures of characters as you travel through different areas.

Should You Buy Pokemon Scarlet or Violet? 3l3p3r

I mean, if you want! If you’re on the fence, it’s probably best to wait until reviews are live and other people you know and trust played it. That way, you can get some expressions from other players to see if it is something you’d like.

As to which version, both will be equally good! There are a few minor exclusives in each one. But in general, you’re getting a new Pokemon experience either way.

The Pokemon Legends: Arceus anime is now finished, as folks can now see the third episode of Pokemon Hisuian Snow. It closes out the story following the bond between a young man named Alec and a Hisuian Zoroa. “Two Hues” is immediately available

If people haven’t been keeping up with Pokemon Hisuian Snow, they might be a bit lost going into the last episode of the Pokemon Legends: Arceus anime. It picks up right as Alec is finding his father again after returning home. He mentions his goal of finding medicinal plants in Alabaster Forest. That’s where he met the Hisuian Zoroa before. It’s then that he hears a roar.

Alec heads to the town’s watch tower. It is then that he sees a phenomenon folks who played Pokemon Legends: Arceus will recognize. A Space-Time Distortion appeared in the Alabaster Forest. After seeing an injured Rufflet flying toward the village, Alec runs out to help. He then starts fighting to go and help the injured Pokemon.

The 2.0.0 update, available now, will allow s to deposit and withdraw Pokemon between these three new games. Furthermore, the update will also add the Pokedex from each compatible Pokemon game. s who link any of the above three games and deposit a Pokemon can also receive special gift Pokemon for each game they link.

Pokemon Home is an app that allows players to move their Pokemon from one game to another. This means that if a player originally caught a Pokemon in Sword or Shield, they can use Pokemon Home to move that Pokemon to their save files in other games. Some games, like Pokemon GO, Let's Go, Eevee!, and Let’s Go, Pikachu!, will only allow the to move the Pokemon once, after which it cannot be moved back.

The Pokemon Company detailed the contents of the update in a post released last week. While the update will allow players to transfer Pokemon freely from the three games, there are a few caveats. One, due to the fact that Pokemon Legends: Arceus is set in the distant past, any Pokemon caught and transferred from BDSP, Sword, or Shield will come in Strange Balls. Similarly, Pokemon caught in Legends: Arceus and transferred to the above games will also appear in Strange Balls.

The special gift Pokemon will vary depending on the linked game. Linking Legends: Arceus, for example, will gift s with a Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott with maximum effort levels. BDSP, on the other hand, will net s a Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup with Hidden Abilities. Both will be available as mystery gifts in the mobile device version of Pokemon Home.

Pokemon Home is available on Nintendo Switch and iOS and Android devices. Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available on Nintendo Switch.

People can now start watching the Pokemon Legends: Arceus anime. Pokemon: Hisuian Snow episode 1 is out now. This is a brief episode that is under seven minutes long. It essentially follows a young man who encounters a shiny Hisuian Zorua.

Pokemon: Hisuian Snow episode 1 begins with Alec heading to Jubilife Village. He’s there to visit his father. Before he arrives, he hears a rumor about an Alabaster Forest Pokemon that could be a threat to the village. It’s then that a flashback begins. It shows Alec going with his father to the Alabaster Forest when he was a child. His father warned him about Hisuian Zoroark. Alec’s curiosity gets the better of him, though. And that’s when he encounters the shiny Hisuian Zorua.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus did pretty well after launch. In May 2022, Nintendo announced it ed 12.64 million in sales since its January 28, 2022 launch. Following its debut, a Daybreak update with new outbreaks and Training Ground fights appeared. There will also be Pokemon Home for the game soon.

We finally have an update on Pokemon Home for the Switch BDSP remakes and Legends Arceus. Back in August 2021, a Pokemon Presents suggested the three games would be compatible with the service in 2022. Now, the release window is “soon.” The Pokemon Company International also went over the special Pokemon people will get in each game for linking up. It also noted more Pokedex is on the way for Pokemon Home.

The new Pokedex options will also tie into how Pokemon Home handles data from games. This means it will go beyond the National Pokedex after 2.0.0. When you link Pokemon BDSP to Pokemon Home, it will be relatively simple. You’ll get Hidden Abilities Chimchar, Piplup, and Turtwig as Mystery Gifts. You’ll also be able to access Legends Arceus Pokemon too, though they will be in Strange Balls.

As for Pokemon Legends Arceus, its Pokemon Home Pokedex will acknowledge your research progress and you’ll be able to check each character’s effort levels. The Mystery Gifts for linking it up will be max effort Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet in your box. It will be able to get Pokemon from BDSP, Sword, and Shield, however they will be in Strange Balls when they arrive.
