The PlayStation Network is now completely down, with the PS4 and PS5 store inaccessible and an outage keeping people off of PSN. The official network website shows that every aspect is experiencing issues. Sony’s official social media offered no update or confirmation of any problem. Update: Services restored on February 8, 2025.

The official site noted that PSN management, gaming and social elements on the PS5, the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Direct are all down as part of this unexpected outage. This also affects other platforms, such as the PS4, and accessing elements of Sony’s systems online. All notifications on the site noted the problem having started at about 6pm ET.

This means that if you have a game that is exclusively online, it can not be accessed. So a game such as Fortnite or Honkai: Star Rail would be inaccessible. Also, as licenses can not be verified during an outage, it might be impossible to play other games without proper verification. The best course of action while waiting for service to resume is to check in on the official site. If you have a system capable of playing physical discs or media, then it is possible to use and experience them during an outage such as this.

The PlayStation Network is currently down on systems like the PS4 and PS5, with the outage also affecting the store online and on web browsers. Sony has yet to comment on when service will resume.

Game Licenses Expire PS3 PS Vita

A PlayStation Network bug is causing game licenses to suddenly expire, preventing s from playing games on the PS3 and Vita. First reported for purchased and ed versions of Chrono Cross, the bug has also affected games like Chrono Trigger and many others. Evidence points to the phenomenon being a network glitch. [Thanks, Prima Games!]

Earlier this week, s began reporting issues with playing the PSOne Classic version of Chrono Cross on PS3. The initial theory was that Square Enix had delisted the older version of the game, due to the recent release of Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition remaster. That was the case for the recent Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster releases, which saw Square Enix remove older versions from the Steam store. That said, s could still play the older version if they had purchased it.

However, the problem has reportedly been affecting games from other publishers as well. Specifically, s have reported getting errors stating that a game's license expired on January 1, 1970. The error messages have been seemingly random. They've affected games for some s while working fine for others, as well as depending on the console.

GamesHub's Edmond Tran found that, while the PS1 version of Chrono Cross no longer appeared on the Vita store, he could still play it through his list. On the other hand, it was available in the PS3 store and could be installed, but displayed the above error message.

https://twitter.com/EdmondTran/status/1510940407764434947

The expiration date in question is of particular importance. As s have pointed out in the comments, the date is the "Unix epoch." When developing the first computing systems, Unix engineers arbitrarily picked the date as the "zero point" of time. It's also commonly used as a default timestamp in a database. As such, it's highly likely that the expired game licenses are a result of a PSN bug.

Sony has yet to comment on the issue.

PSN is Down Following PS4 and PS5 Firmware Updates

On March 23, 2022, Sony announced firmware updates would bring the PS4 up to 9.50 and PS5 up to 22.01-05. Shortly after, the PSN went down. The PlayStation Network official status page noted that while management, PlayStation Direct, and PlayStation Video are working as expected, everything else isn’t.

This means that things related to actual PS4 and PS5 console activities are out of commission while the PSN is down. Both system owners and the official site reported issues with playing games online and streaming are happening on not only the PS4 and PS5, but PS3 and Vita. This also means Sony’s official PlayStation Now service is affected. It isn’t possible to properly use the PlayStation Store as well.

There is also an issue people are reporting on the PS4 and PS5 subreddits that could be related to either the fact that the PSN is down or the new firmware updates. PlayStation Plus subscribers are noting that the systems aren’t showing or recognizing their active subscriptions.

The March 2022 PS4 and PS5 firmware update offered a few changes. For example, on both systems and the app you can open and closed consoles. The PS5 one is also paving the way for voice commands and variable refresh rates.

It seems multiple game services are currently out, following an Akamai Edge DNS Service outage. It seems the outage resulted in the PlayStation Network, Steam, and Xbox Live being down. There are no details yet about how long it might last. On Akamai's end, it noted that the company is aware of and investigating the issue. The statement was issued at 16:09 UTC on July 22, 2021.

Here is the full statement from Akamai.

We are aware of an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service.

We are actively investigating the issue. If you have questions or are experiencing impact due to this issue, please Akamai Technical . In the interest of time, we are providing you the most current information available, which is subject to changes, corrections, and updates.

At the moment, reports are the only ones bringing it up. The official PlayStation and Xbox sites both list the status of PSN and Xbox Live as normal. Also, attempting to visit Steam can trigger a “Service Unavailable DNS failure” message. Other affected games and services with issues that seem to be related include Fortnite.

There is no word about how long the outage might last while PSN, Xbox Live, and Steam are down.

PSN Remasters and Retro Sale

The future might look uncertain, but there's comfort to be found in playing games from a different, possibly simpler time. That's one promise you might find with the deals available during Sony's PSN Remasters and Retro Sale, which will run until February 10, 2021.

Folks looking to play an old classic on the PS4 or PS5 might do well to pick few digital games up, as the discounts are fairly steep for some remasters of beloved old titles. Sadly for frugal Final Fantasy fans, the biggest retro remaster of 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake, is not on the list.

Still, there's plenty to think about picking up on the PSN Remasters and Retro Sale. In fact, Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Dead Cells are two of the only titles there that are not explicitly ports or remasters of existing games. Though they could be argued to be "retro," as they call back to classic designs. Other notable deals include big cuts on PS2-era rereleases like Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy, the remaster of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, classic antigrav racer WipEout, and inimitable J-Horror game Siren. A number PS1, PSP and Vita-era titles have their PS4 editions discounted, like Patapon RemasteredGravity Rush Remastered, and PaRappa The Rapper.

Check out our picks for some the available deals in the PSN Remasters and Retro Sale below. You can also see the full list on the PlayStation Store.

PSN Store

The rumors were true: Sony is indeed removing the ability to buy PS3, PSP, and PS Vita games from the PSN Store when accessing the via the mobile app or web browser. According to official emails sent out to PlayStation Network titled "Important Changes to PlayStation Store", the PlayStation Store overhaul will take effect from October 21, 2020 to October 26, 2020 on web, and by October 28, 2020 on mobile app.

Also included in the purge is the ability to buy Apps, Themes, and Avatars, and the Wishlist feature. Current wishlists will be discontinued. Not all is lost, though: Direct device-based access to the PSN Store through a PS3, PSP, and PS Vita will allow players to buy games. Similarly, accessing the store through a PS4 will surface apps, themes and avatars just like before. Any previously purchased content will be accessible as before.

Here's a screenshot of one of the emails sent out by Sony about the PSN Store changes:

PlayStation Store

In essence, the main difference between the official announcement and the rumored emails that circulated last week (which were targeted toward developers and partners) is date of the changes to the web PSN store: October 21, 2020 instead of October 19, 2020. The mobile rollout remains the same. This means that players wishing to easily access some of the remaining content on the older platforms are advised to pick up what they can before then.

Most likely the store overhaul has to do with preparing for the new version of the PSN store that will launch with the PlayStation 5. The PS5 will also debut a new experience, one with a more closely integrated store. In a surprise State of Play video ed on October 15, 2020, parts of the interface on PS5 were detailed, centered around "cards" and an instantly accessible "control center" function.

The PSN Store will be overhauled on October 21 through 26, 2020 on web, and on mobile app on October 28, 2020. The PlayStation 5 will launch be available in  Australia, Japan, North America, and South Korea on November 12, 2020, and worldwide on November 19, 2020.

PlayStation Store

Rumors suggest that Sony's PlayStation Store on mobile and browser may soon remove the ability to buy PS3, PSP, and PS Vita content. French site Planète Vita reported receiving screenshots of an email allegedly sent by Sony promoting a large overhaul coming to the PlayStation Store. The report was then relayed by tipster Wario64 via tweet:

https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1314280265460584448

The update, scheduled for October 19th and 28th, 2020, will target the PlayStation Store website and mobile app. The update would supposedly remove the ability to wishlist or purchase content for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita when visiting the PSN store via the site or mobile app. Device-based access, however, would be unaffected, meaning Vita, PS3, and PSP owners would be able to access the store through their respective devices. Any previously purchased content would remain able, as well.

Among other changes reported by another story on Push Square, the update would end up wiping existing wishlists, possibly in advance of a store-wide revamp ahead of the PlayStation 5's launch.

If true, the PlayStation Store update rumors could prove unpopular. While the PSP, Vita, and PS3 have long been considered "legacy" hardware, many people still own them, and new developments still arrive even today. For example, in July 2020 PS3 players of Metal Gear Solid V achieved the only legitimate instance of total (in-game) nuclear disarmament. Similarly, the PS Vita and PSP, while never hugely successful outside Japan and Asia, still gathered a sizeable fanbase and a number of still exclusive titles. Until recently, the PS Vita (and its PS TV spinoff) was the only place to play Persona 4 Golden.

Additionally, while the device-based access will be retained, many s report accessing the PlayStation Store on the legacy platforms has been a suboptimal experience at best, full of bugs or stability problems. True or not, fans of the PS3, PSP, and Vita are would probably do well to what they can or take stock of their physical copies, just in case.

big in japan sale april 2020

Once again, it's time for anime-inspired games to come to the people for affordable prices. Sony is launching yet another Big in Japan sale starting April 24, 2020. If you didn't make it into the Gundam Extreme Vs. Maxiboost beta, you can still occupy yourself this weekend with budget-friendly Japanese video games. This sale runs until May 8, 2020, and provides deals up to 50% off on anime games, Japanese RPGs, visual novels, and... Korean MMO Black Desert Online?

Even if you aren't into anime, there are some great games in here. Sony's really pushing the inclusion of Devil May Cry 5Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, and One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows. Other highlights include several other Final Fantasy titles, DigimonDark Souls, and Resident Evil. I'm personally eyeing that .Hack//G.U. Last Recode collection, because that's serious bang versus buck value.

It's worth noting that the sale isn't live just yet at the time of this writing, and the PlayStation Blog post announcing the sale for North America and Europe doesn't include a full list of games. There could be even more great deals dropping once the Big in Japan April 2020 sale goes live on the PlayStation Store.

And if Japanese games aren't really your thing, you can check out the Spring Sale, which is still going on through April 28, 2020.

playstation network europe psn europe

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan has issued a statement about the PlayStation Network in Europe’s performance following the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Since there is an increased number of s logging on to games and play online, the company revealed it is trying to better “manage traffic.” This is being done in an attempt to keep the network from going down so everyone can continue to play.

Here is Ryan’s full official statement, which was posted on both the North American and European PlayStation Blogs.

Playing videogames enables players all over the world to connect with friends and family and enjoy much needed entertainment during these uncertain times. Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with internet service providers in Europe to manage traffic to help preserve access for the entire internet community.

We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access.

Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game s but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.

This is part of Sony’s continuing response to the spread of the coronavirus. Initially, it canceled its PAX East 2020 plans. It then decided to avoid attending GDC 2020, before the event was canceled. Instead, it shared the PlayStation 5 architecture announcement from Mark Cerny in a video online in March 2020.
