Nintendo announced a Pikmin series crossover with the San Diego Zoo will take place in October and November 2024. Things kick off on October 1, 2024. As part of the promotion, the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp will feature the characters from the game around the location.

There are no photos showing what people should look for when taking part in the Pikmin San Diego Zoo event. Nintendo only noted that the characters will be hidden at that part of the park. People who show up and hunt will have a chance to earn related items, however.

How it works is people who attend the San Diego Zoo will be able to check in with Nintendo. On all weekends between October 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024, there will be a Pikmin Pop-Up Tent. You can get tasks to earn a goodie bag there. It is also possible to check in for 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points. Note that the tent is only going to be there on weekends, so the first day that appears is October 5, 2024, and the last one is November 24, 2024.

There are two recent Pikmin games available. One is Pikmin Bloom, which is available on mobile devices. The latest console entry is Pikmin 4, which you can find on the Nintendo Switch

It isn't uncommon for these sorts of events to happen, in general. For example, Nintendo held ones for Animal Crossing at aquariums.

The San Diego Zoo is at 2920 Zoo Drive in San Diego, California. The Pikmin event will run October 1, 2024 through November 30, 2024. This runs at the same time as the Kids Free Month at the park, which ends October 31, 2024.

The Pikmin 4 Ice Maker and Cup set is scheduled to release again in Japan on July 10, 2024. The listing on TKJ for the set includes an original ice maker silicone mold and a cup with a design based on the franchise, enabling fans to create the Ice Pikmin creature featured in the Nintendo Switch game.

The silicone mold for the Ice Pikmin can be used for creating ice, gummy snacks, and other items. It measures approximately 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) in length, 8 cm (3.1 inches) in width, and 7 cm (2.8 inches) in thickness. The cup, featuring the Pikmin 4 logo and characters, stands at 8.8 cm (3.5 inches) in height with an opening diameter of 7.8 cm (3.1 inches).

Here's a closer look at the items:

Pikmin 4 is a popular strategy game for the Nintendo Switch, where players control a group of tiny, plant-like creatures called Pikmin to explore various environments and solve puzzles. The game introduced new characters, including Oatchi the Space Dog and the Ice Pikmin. Oatchi and Ice Pikmin plush toys will release in September 2024.

Additionally, in an unofficial popularity poll by Dengeki Online, Rock Pikmin topped the charts. Ice Pikmin, despite their unique abilities, did not make the top five in this Pikmin 4 poll.

Pikmin 4 is available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Best Pikmin game

A new Pikmin game is here! We've been waiting quite a while. Shigeru Miyamoto did announce it was in development back in 2015. While we debate which one we should play, let's all talk about the Pikmin games we liked best.

So, I mean, I'd say it is Pikmin 4. (I did just write a whole review talking about how much I loved it.) Other entries would sometimes stress me out so much that I couldn't appreciate anything I'm doing. This entry still features fun challenges, but does so in a way that I'm not constantly worrying my time is about to expire.
Not to mention there's so much game here! — Jenni

While I have a soft spot for the earlier titles in the series, Pikmin 4 appears to be the most comprehensive and content-packed entry yet. I haven’t had the chance to check it out, though, so for me, it’ll go to Pikmin 3 for now. It removes the stress of a time limit, tightens the gameplay, and features sharp colorful HD graphics. — Cody

Pikmin 3 has been staring at me from my backlog alongside a million other games for a while, so I've only played the first two games in the series. However, of the two, I found Pikmin 2 to be the more enjoyable of the two. The first Pikmin was a stressful experience due to the persistent time limit, so Pikmin 2 providing more room to breathe was a huge improvement for me, and the introduction of caves helped add more variety to the gameplay. This may change when I eventually get round to the third game (and now the fourth!) but for now, Pikmin 2 all the way! — Leigh

Pikmin 4 Developer Interview

Nintendo released a developer interview with the Pikmin 4 team. In it, various people behind it discussed the challenges of trying to attract new players while maintaining the essential essence of Pikmin. It also went over the idea of "Dandori" in Pikmin 4, a recurring concept.

The interview featured five team . Chief director Yuji Kando, Planning Directors Yutaka Hiramuki and Taku Matoba, Sound Director Mitsuhiro Kida and Pikmin’s Creator Shigeru Miyamoto participated. Each member of the team had worked on previous Pikmin titles.

One of the key elements the Pikmin 4 team discussed in the developer interview was the concept of Dandori, which they considered essential to Pikmin. The term Dandori means efficient planning, describing how the player must use their Pikmin effectively. The team looked at various ways to teach the player how to utilize the concept in Pikmin 4, such as implementing Pikmin 3’s Mission Mode (now renamed Dandori Challenge) into the game’s story.

The team also discussed how to make Pikmin 4 more accessible to newcomers. Past games in the series had been considered difficult, so they were eager to add new elements that would improve that. This is where the space dog Oatchi, the invincible Glow Pikmin and the Rewind Time feature came in, allowing players more space to experiment.

Pikmin 4 will be released for Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023.

Review: Pikmin 4 Offers So Much to Do

The Pikmin games are typically hit-or-miss for me. I enjoy them and ire how they work, but the anxiety and stress tied to their guidelines often left me coming away from each play session rather stressed. Pikmin 4 is different. It’s an entry packed with quality-of-life changes, great set pieces, and a staggering amount of gameplay. It’s the sort of game when just when you think it might be over, it surprises you with even more to do.

Once again, Olimar is shipwrecked on another (strangely familiar) planet. However, rather than stepping into his shoes to find a way to gather resources and head home, the Rescue Corps fly in to save the day! They then, of course, also crash land. The last resort is a Rescue Corps newcomer players customize who heads to the planet to save the day. Accompanied by the space dog Rescue Pup Oatchi, you need to get used to the new environment, collect Pikmin, find the missing Rescue Corps , deal with strange Leaflings’ challenges, and rescue Olimar and any other stranded folks along the way.

[caption id="attachment_973275" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikmin 4 review Image via Nintendo[/caption]

There’s a fairly steady routine to fall into in Pikmin 4. The bulk of the game involves heading into maps with various locations, diving into cave stages to find castaways or treasures to restore the Rescue Corps ship, and fully exploring areas to build up your collection, get more Pikmin, and grow closer to finding the missing folks. Once you get through a day, you regroup at the hub, talking to people you rescued in case there are side quests, and prepare for another run. Your time in each of these spaces is limited to daylight hours, though the amount of time in each spot is fairly generous and you get a sufficient warning as it draws to a close to round up stray Pikmin and prepare for departure.

As usual, Pikmin possess different traits that make them better suited for some situations. The Red Pikmin are fire-proof. Yellow Pikmin can be tossed higher and are immune to electricity. Blue Pikmin can swim. Ice Pikmin can freeze water or enemies. Winged Pikmin can deal with airborne enemies easier or transport items over tricky terrain. Rock Pikmin can shatter certain barriers and deal more damage. Heavy Pikmin can carry larger loads and deal with a specific type of opponent that usually doesn’t take damage. White Pikmin are poisonous, which means they can deal with spores or poison enemies who eat them. So if you’re going to face enemies in an area? Ice, Red, and Rock types are handy. For exploration, Yellow, Blue, Ice, and Winged ones tend to be good buddies.

[caption id="attachment_973274" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikmin 4 Image via Nintendo[/caption]

Each main area map has a theme, such as a wooded area or beach, which means certain Pikmin are suited for their environments. The caves, on the other hand, are typically multi-floor experiences that can feel a bit more like puzzles. These are untimed areas, so you don’t need to worry about the pressure of time limits when facing challenges, getting through maze-like situations, and even facing minibosses. Also while you do bring in your own (recommended) Pikmin to most of the non-Dandori-related ones, they’ll also involve wild Pikmin and blossoms to change ones you currently have into other types like Heavy or White. They’re a genuine delight, and I only encountered one that felt unfair. But, to Nintendo’s credit, its instructions were trying to push me forward and I was being stubborn and insisting on accomplishing certain goals. That said, there were a few types of cave experiences that I wished appeared with additional variants, because there are a few fun one-off challenges that I feel could have been explored further.

That aside, the quality-of-life adjustments in Pikmin 4 are extraordinary, and I’d say Oatchi is among the best of them. Being able to hop on the Rescue Pup with all your Pikmin is such a timesaver and relief, since you know everyone is there and can ferry ones that can’t swim to other areas. It’s also a good way to direct attacks, firing off all Pikmin at once, or round up stray ones after they completed tasks. Oatchi can also eventually gain the strength of 100 Pikmin for recovering treasures. I sometimes even switched and controlled him alone to face some stronger enemies so I wouldn’t lose Pikmin. But we also have an ability to rewind time, in the event things go poorly in the overworld area or in a cave. Not to mention you can change where your base is, sending it to another spot on the map to save you time or get you in a better position for the next day. You can also purchase so many optional upgrades, like treasure trackers or bombs, or just pull up a menu to assign Oatchi a task, to make your life easier.

[caption id="attachment_973276" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Image via Nintendo Image via Nintendo[/caption]

This is all accompanied by additional gameplay modes. Night Expeditions come up as you unlock new maps and explore them. You’ll need to protect Luminolls alongside Oatchi and Glow Pikmin in what is essentially a timed horde mode. You get a brief amount of time to build up a Glow Pikmin army by grabbing konpeito, then attempt to survive until the night ends to collect the resources you need. There are varying difficulties, and being defeated lets you call in the Rescue Corps ally Dingo for an instant win.

Another mode is Dandori Battle, which involves getting more resources to your Onion than your opponent. As you go on, there are power-ups and sabotage abilities you can collect, as well as a bomb you can sneak over to your enemy’s Onion to cause them to lose their resources (which you can then steal away). Dandori can also be accessed via the main menu, in addition to AI matches in the campaign, in case you want to play competitively with friends. I didn’t get to test out the true multiplayer experience, but the matches against the in-game foes can be genuinely challenging. This is especially true when bonus point items change or the sneaky bomb appears.

[caption id="attachment_973277" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Image via Nintendo Image via Nintendo[/caption]

My one qualm? The final stretch, the last hour or so depending on how quickly or slowly you play, just... wasn’t much fun. This is due to the execution. You could think of it as a gauntlet of sorts. Considering how well-balanced everything is prior to this point, it’s an abrupt difficulty spike that almost deterred me from finishing the game.

Still, that aside, Pikmin 4 is an extraordinary experience. It’s the coziest installment in the series, especially since some of the new features eliminate the deadline pressure and other stressors from past installments. That said, it is still a thought-provoking entry that will require you to put thought into proceeding through areas and picking the proper Pikmin to solve problems. It’s a wonderful game about thinking things through and strategically managing resources, and the addition of Oatchi helps a player enjoy everything instead of stressing about so many tasks.

Pikmin 4 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023.

New Pikmin 4 Trailer Focuses on the Pikmin

Nintendo shared a new Pikmin 4 video that acts as an introduction to the sorts of Pikmin you’ll see in the game. Both in-game footage and animations created specifically for the video appear to introduce how they work ahead of the game’s July 223 debut.

Things begin by introducing the plant-like creatures. Then, it shows how using the “whistle” in game can summon them and get them to follow you. As usual, you can toss Pikmin to direct them to perform tasks in Pikmin 4. So you can toss them at items to carry them, at mounds to dig them up, at unfinished structures like bridges to complete them, and at enemies to fight them. However, in situations with enemies, they could be eaten or injured. It shows that whistling can get them to return to you and out of harm’s way. Also, it shows how you can grow and collect more.

Primarily, the Blue, Red, and Yellow Pikmin are the focus in this Pikmin 4 video. However, at the three minute mark it shows off the other ones that appear, while also highlighting each one’s speciality. Blue can swim underwater, Red are okay with fire, Yellow are fine with electricity, and so on. There’s also an introduction to Oatchi at the four minute mark that shows how the “dog” can work alongside them for getting items and moving around.

Here’s the “Your First Expedition with Pikmin” trailer.

Pikmin 4 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023. Pre-orders are open.

Preview: Pikmin 4 Feels Like a Return to Form

For years, we’ve known Pikmin 4 is in development. The series revels in combining the familiar and unfamiliar, with its humanoid characters constantly crash landing on planets that are home to mysterious, plant-like creatures eager to lend assistance. Now that we’re on the verge of its return, I had a chance to head back on another voyage. Even in its early hours, it feels like a revival of the series’ most familiar concepts.

After a bit of an introduction, Pikmin 4 puts players in something of a similar situation. Shipwrecks on a familiar planet result in us becoming Rescue Corps rookies saving the day. However, instead of immediately jumping to Pikmin helping to save the day, another creature comes in instead: Oatchi the Rescue Pup. The dog-like creature can function like a Pikmin in some ways. He’s able to carry items and was as strong as three Pikmin when I was going through the first area of the game. He can attack enemies, dealing damage to foes. Rather than immediately getting knocked out, he has a health bar that depletes when foes attack. You could use him to knock down items, so they can be collected. He’s also able to dig at buried objects or provide access to areas by pulling a plant from a pot to provide a new avenue.

Most importantly, Oatchi possessed a rush attack in my first adventures on the planet again. This is a charged attack, which can be used to break fragile objects or hit an enemy to deal damage. It feels like a little extra “oomph” right away, lending a sense of power early on that the more fragile Pikmin don’t possess.

This isn’t to say the Pikmin don’t seem as capable (and endearing) as ever. Given I was going through the first hour or so, I didn’t get to gather a massive army. But right away, I was able to send them to collect items like a Stone of Advancement to get the Sparklium to power the S.S. Shepherd. I ended up using them to flatten a paper bag, to act as a ramp, and destroy a wall, to create access to one of the missing Rescue Corp stranded in the accident. The Red Pikmin were ready to provide any aid I needed.

I even got to meet the Ice Pikmin early on. This is the new species with traits focused on freezing. Which is what they came in handy for in two ways in these early expeditions. They could freeze an enemy they were attacking, providing an opportunity to take advantage of a situation. More interestingly is how they could also affect environmental objects. For example, if something had a “jelly” consistency with a high amount of water, a group of Ice Pikmin attacking it could freeze it. Oatchi could then rush into it to destroy it, providing access to a previously blocked off area.

But I think what I appreciated most were the two quality of life features I was able to see early on. One is the introduction of landing spots. When you are in an area on a mission, you can move the S.S. Beagle and Onion to a “hub.” This means less time wasted backtracking if you need to harvest more Pikmin or recall the ones you were using. The other is the Rewind Time option. During my first timed mission, I thought I had a bit more time for a quick retrieval, due to not knowing exactly how much time would be left once you get to the red part of the gauge warning you when the sun is about to set. So I didn’t have to lose some of those ten Pikmin, some of which were of the Ice variety, I was able to briefly rewind and make sure those little friends made it to safety.

Pikmin 4 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023. A demo will appear on June 28, 2023.

Pikmin 4 Character Creator Shown Off in New Trailer

It turns out players in Pikmin 4 will use a character creator to make their own avatars. A new trailer for the game goes over the process, while detailing why people will insert themselves into the game. Not only did Captain Olimar crash land, but the Rescue Corp going to rescue him also crashed. So now it’s up to the player to head on an emergency mission to rescue all of them.

The Pikmin 4 character creator trailer goes through the process of making an “ID badge,” which also acts as your avatar. It begins by picking one of six hairstyle options. Then, you choose a body type. Four options appear there. The other tabs in the teaser suggest people can choose facial features, hairstyles, hair colors, and suit colors.

Here’s the full trailer.

As a reminder, the game's development was first announced back in 2015. However, it didn't really show up in full until a September 2022 Nintendo Direct.

Pikmin 4 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023.
