Holo Indie games based on Hololive Vtubers are at their best when it feels like anyone could go into a title, have fun with it, and not feel excluded based on what’s going on. Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth, on the other hand, pushes that a little. While it is pretty approachable in of gameplay, due to being a run-and-gun platformer and Mega Man-like, some gameplay decisions and a heavy focus on the Holoearth Hololive Alternative lore with no explanation keep it from being as approachable as other projects based on Cover’s performers.

Okay, this is going to get complicated for a second. Bear with me.

Shirakami Fubuki is a Hololive Vtuber whose lore involves her being a white fox. She’s often paired with fellow Hololive Gamers unit member Ookami Mio, who is a black wolf. So this is a game about Fubuki, in a way, with major appearances from Mio.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpPfmKHuStM&ab_channel=PhoenixxGames%2F%E3%83%95%E3%82%A3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8B%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%E3%82%BA

Except it isn’t just those two. It’s the Yamato Phantasia versions of those two individuals that are part of the Holoearth and Hololive Alternative projects. In that storyline, Fubuki and Mio are essentially gods who help protect Yamato from corruption. The two end up being tasked with erasing corruption and protecting people. While usually they are limited to that realm, the events in Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth involve other potential alternate realities being affected, with the Vtubers from the companies being notable, notorious, or godly figures in need of assistance or salvation from an unexpected corruption.

Once you really get into it, the story doesn’t matter much. But there’s still an expectation that you know exactly who these people are, why it matters that Vtubers are in specific locations, and such. This is a Holo Indie game where you will miss out without prior knowledge about the performers involved and their official backstories.

This ties into the Mega Man-like element of Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth. While the first stage sees Fubuki summoned into action to help Yamato, the first boss is actually a version of Houshou Marine. When Marine gets sucked through a portal after Fubuki saves her (by beating her up), we end up tasked with going to multiple stages set in various worlds with different Hololive Vtuber bosses in each one. Every one of them involves small and large enemies, usually with projectile attacks, as we have Fubuki run, jump, use special weapons, find collectibles for certain attacks, and get through 2D stages. While her default weapon is the Murasamemaru melee sword, she does get additional types of attacks that allow for some ranged options.

Those other weapons are the other way in which Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth feels very Mega Man-like. Like in Capcom’s series, defeating a boss means getting a weapon associated with them. It’s a neat concept, and I love when games do that! However, I feel it’s a missed opportunity here. There is no strategy to it. So while these can be helpful when getting through stages, it doesn’t mean we have a situation where after beating Marine, you should really go to the Frozen Theme Park because Yukihana Lamy is weak against Captain Marine’s Gun. You can tackle any stage in any order because there is no recommended progression that makes you feel smart for ensuring you faced certain folks at specific times.

Another shame is that Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth is so short. The good part is, it doesn’t wear out its welcome. Every one of the six locations does feel unique. The spritework is good. But… there are only six stages really! And six major boss fights. (The last one is quite substantial, however!) I spent three hours with it, as I felt like I needed to go through quite a bit to ensure I saw it all, but I honestly probably would have been done in about two hours.

I will say that I appreciate the update that launched back on April 18, 2025. I did feel the boss difficulty was a bit much in some spots and dropped down to easy during this review. Since then, PEPOSOFT did some rebalancing that made it more manageable. I also found the Boss Rush mode and gave it a try, which helps mitigate the fact that the game is so short a tad. The team mentioned an Extra mode and new game plus option are also in development, which again will help.

I’m a fan of Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth, especially if I drop down to the easy difficulty level to really enjoy myself. It’s an entertaining Mega Man-like game wearing a Hololive Vtuber skin. I do think it is at its best if someone really enjoys both that type of game and Cover’s performers. If not, then the length, fact that the weapons from each boss don’t feature any strategic element, and injection of Holoearth and Hololive lore with no explanation could be too high a barrier to jump.

Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth is available on PCs, and a demo is out.

Fubuki -zero in on Holoearth- demo released

Phoenixx has published a public demo version of Fubuki -zero in on Holoearth- Hololive Alternative. People can check out the earliest parts of the Hololive-themed 2D action game for free on Steam ahead of the full game's release in Spring 2025.

Phoenixx's Japanese press release added that it will also set up physical demo booths for the game at two events that will run simultaneously in Japan on March 8-9, 2025. The events in question will be the Hololive Super Expo 2025 at Makuhari Messe and the Tokyo Indie Games Summit 2025 in Kichijoji.

Fubuki -zero in on Holoearth- will star the Japanese Hololive Vtuber Shirakami Fubuki. Its story and world setting will also take inspiration from the Hololive Alternative series, which also acts as a basis for Cover's own Holoearth metaverse game project.

The game will be playable on most PCs that can run a Windows 10 OS. However, to achieve optimal performance, Phoenixx and Peposoft recommend a PC with Windows 11 OS, 8 GB of RAM, and Intel Core i7-12700F as its U.

Despite being a Hololive-themed game with Cover Corporations' copyright, this title is not part of Cover's holo Indie brand, which has featured titles like Mori Calliope's Myriad Death and Ouro Kronii's Chrono Gear: Warden of Time. The game's development studio Peposoft opts to work with Phoenixx to release this Shirakami Fubuki-focused game.

Fubuki -zero in on Holoearth- Hololive Alternative will be available worldwide on PC via Steam in Spring 2025. The game's demo is available as part of the Steam Next Fest which runs until March 3, 2025.

Review: Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya Is a Delightfully Cozy Game Switch

There are a lot of Touhou Project and Touhou-adjacent games, so much so that I didn’t even catch the doujin game Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya when it first released on Steam in 2021. I’m kicking myself now, because apparently I did myself a huge disservice by not paying attention. Now that the Switch version is here, I’ve found its one of the better cozy games I’ve played in 2024.

First, to assuage any anxiety you may have, you do not need any Touhou Project knowledge to play the doujin game Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya on the Switch. It is entirely self-contained. Mystia Lorelei and Kyouko Kasodani are both ing cast who even fans might not know or recognize at a glance. There are cameos from more notable of the series’ cast, but they’re introduced and handled in such a way that you’ll be fine if you’re entirely new to the series. All you need to know is that the setting is a land filled with supernatural beings and yokai that’s basically next door to our own world.

Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya plays with that notion at the very outset. In case someone didn’t notice Mystia’s sparrow wings and Kyouko’s horns, they will notice that the restaurant management simulation begins with the two opening an established izakaya for the evening, a being with a never-ending appetite decimating everything, and history-eating half-beast rewinding time to give Mystia a second chance to satisfy the menace. From there, it’s a fairly relaxed, incredibly cozy game about meeting Gensokyo’s residents, collecting ingredients and recipes, running a restaurant, and becoming a success.

When I first saw Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya, I initially wondered about just how easy it might be to play on the Switch and if it would be more stressful than cozy game. This is because there’s a bit of a zoomed out appearance, there are a lot of things happening on-screen during the serving process, and the series’ trademark spell cards come into play while running the restaurant at night. However, don’t let the sometimes simplistic view and array of information packed on the screen dissuade you. It’s all properly introduced and handled very well once you get into the game and start running your business.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WmN3iqR7jY&ab_channel=kk%E5%B9%BD%E7%B4%AB

In fact, its pacing is really pretty perfect. During the day, you prepare for service at night. This means going to gather ingredients, finding new recipes you can cook, and meeting Touhou Project characters. There are even some mild relationship elements, as you can befriend the “special” customers that are series mainstays like Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Getting to know them better makes it easier to serve them when they visit, since they won’t just tell you what they want like a normal customer, and increases their strength. This exploration phase is also how you find new employees to Mystia and Kyouko, like Kosuzu Motoori or Sakuya Izayoi. You get to visit more and more areas of the region, granting access to new items, more types of food, and more people.

Once night hits though, you head back to the kitchen. Things start small, as initially Mystia is working to pay off Kyouko’s 3,000 yen debt. This also means only offering probably one type of drink and one or two food items. However, you eventually can set up additional cooking stations, different meals depending on ingredients and recipes found, and serve more people. Getting additional workers, with up to three assisting with serving, helps with the time management element. But really, it can come down to sometimes having certain items prepped and ready at all times if you know who is supposed to be showing up. Each dish only takes a few seconds to cook, so even though there is a time management element, it never feels like too much pressure.

What’s also great is that you’re getting the full Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya game on the Nintendo Switch, to ensure that you can really take your time and get cozy with it. The five DLC add-ons, which include more locations, characters, and story opportunities are available here. It also plays really well on the system, with the controls being perfect. The localization is fine, considering this is a doujin game. Most importantly, even though there’s a lot of text tossed on you, the full-screen sprite art looks absolutely impeccable on a Switch OLED. It's well-suited to the handheld, which means I'm looking forward to heading back to it later to finish the add-ons I didn't complete and just enjoy the ambiance.

In a way, I’m still shocked at how absolutely delightful Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya is, and I’m so pleased at the prospect that a Switch release might garner more attention for every version of the game. It’s so much better than I anticipated, and the pacing and nature of it make it a perfect cozy game for someone who wants to sit back, make some friends, and run a restaurant. While the idea of it being a Touhou Project doujin game might be a bit daunting, it’s worth a chance if you love the life sim and restaurant management genres or just want to build up your library of cozy games. There's more to it than you'd expect.

Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam

Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam

super ufo fighter review

Sometimes, a game comes along that simply catches your eye and doesn’t let go. Super UFO Fighter is certainly that, with a bright feel, a sharp pixel-art aesthetic and an approach to game structure that learns from titans of the genre. Past the coat of paint, though? There really isn’t much to find.

In Super UFO Fighter, you control a spaceship in a crane game. Since these are widely known as “UFO Catchers” in Japan, it’s a pun we’ve seen a lot. Fundamentally, though, this takes the tractor beam and physics-heavy object system of HAL Laboratory’s Part Time UFO and puts it into a head-to-head battle arena format. Your job is to root through the gachapon capsules, breaking them open until you find the trophy item and getting that special prize to your chute. In the meantime, you can collect common items to raise your opponent’s wall and make it harder for them to reach the chute. You can also strike your foe with an attack from above.

And... that’s it! We’ve described the whole game. We didn’t find anything in the options that fundamentally changed our strategy. There are more "arena" options, but we found them largely indistinguishable from one another. The three characters — Acute, Adamsia and Lulu — are endearing! But their largely-cosmetic combat differences don't change any gameplay decisions. It’s a real shame, because this game has the sort of trappings that could really dress up a compelling simple core. Much like Money Puzzle Exchanger, Super UFO Fighter has a bright aesthetic. Its characters are one-note, but instantly endearing. The menus and options feel like they were forged by a student of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, using placement and color to guide and provide hierarchy instead of providing a simple list.

We guess it’s good that what’s here tends to work? We were able to test the online functionality, and it worked well. This is the point in the review that we’d typically provide some sort of disclaimer that launch-window servers could be crowded and make conditions worse, but... honestly, we don’t expect that to be a problem. There’s also a single-player mode, held together with character conversations. Unfortunately, to make a mode like this work, the campaign has to have some interesting challenges or progression, something that games like Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 manage with a similar structural approach.

super ufo fighter review

Super UFO Fighter could have been a great, fun sandbox in the vein of Stick Fight, Duck Game, or BombSquad. Using a tractor beam and weird objects to accomplish varied tasks? Yeah, great! But as it is, the game lacks the creativity to try anything other than its one trophy grab idea. (Actually, there's a hot potato mode too, but it's very easy to break and not worth discussing.) Committing to one game type can work too, right? But that one mode has to be full of nuance and competitive depth. And this game simply doesn’t have that either.

It sure does look cool, though.

Super UFO Fighter was developed by VV-LABO and published by Phoenixx. It releases July 14, 2022 on Nintendo Switch and PC.

The Touhou Empires

Phoenixx and Neetpia have announced The Touhou Empires, a real-time strategy fan game, for PC. It will release sometime in 2022. Alongside this announcement, a gameplay trailer was shared. This includes a look at general gameplay and combat in the real-time strategy title. Players will gather resources to construct buildings and gather an army. Additionally, they will have access to "Spell Cards," which are extremely powerful attacks to help them in combat. There will also be a story mode.

You can watch the trailer for The Touhou Empires below.

[embed]https://youtu.be/ImN9KauZRiE[/embed]

Players will gather resources with fairies to construct various buildings. Several of these buildings were shown in the trailer, along with how players can ultimately construct their forts and raise their individual armies.

As mentioned previously, the title will have a mechanic called "Spell Cards." This mechanic will allow players to unleash devastating attacks against enemy armies. This is a mechanic somewhat unique to the game. The trailer shows this mechanic being used by a major character as they fight alongside their army.

Alongside a story mode, there will also be an online versus mode. It will up to six players at a time. More information about the title will appear in the future.

The Touhou Empires is in development and will release for PC through Steam sometime in 2022.

Filmechanism is Satisfying for Players of Any Skill Level 3h4g18 https://siliconera.voiranime.info/filmechanism-is-satisfying-for-players-of-any-skill-level/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=filmechanism-is-satisfying-for-players-of-any-skill-level https://siliconera.voiranime.info/filmechanism-is-satisfying-for-players-of-any-skill-level/#respond <![CDATA[Jenni Lada]]> Sat, 08 Jan 2022 20:00:22 +0000 <![CDATA[Featured]]> <![CDATA[Nintendo Switch]]> <![CDATA[PC]]> <![CDATA[Chemical Pudding]]> <![CDATA[Europe]]> <![CDATA[Filmechanism]]> <![CDATA[North America]]> <![CDATA[Phoenixx]]> <![CDATA[Playtests]]> https://siliconera.voiranime.info/?p=910689 <![CDATA[

Filmechanism is Satisfying for Players of Any Skill Level 1

Good puzzle games encourage you to grow as you play. They can provide different difficulty levels. However, they don’t get in the way of enjoying it. The lower levels prepare you for the higher ones. Filmechanism is one that handles its challenges well. With the way Chemical Pudding offers and orchestrates things, it really encourages the sense of progression.

The concept of Filmechanism is fairly simple. Something I find can help make a puzzle game fun, because it means anyone can pick it up. You follow a robot who can record the current state of the world. When the robot, dubbed Rec, collected a battery to power the ability that is. After recording, which you can do multiple times when enough batteries are collected, you can restore the world to an existing state. However, when you do, you will still possess things like the batteries or keys you collected. Your goal is to use your powers of observation and this skill to reach the exit in each stage.

Filmechanism is Satisfying for Players of Any Skill Level

Now yes, Filmechanism includes some platforming elements. You’ll need to guide Rec through areas. There’s a lot of jumping. Sometimes even with single-use springs! But while precision can count, the real key is observation. The trick to solving the game’s puzzles is keeping an eye out for when things will happen. None of the jumps require fancy maneuvering. Speed isn’t really an issue. There are no penalties for experimenting, then resetting. Which means a certain amount of pressure is alleviated. This makes it more welcoming to newcomers, while still offering inviting prospects to people familiar with such concepts.

Naturally, the actual difficulty options are what really make Filmechanism the sort of puzzle game anyone could excel at playing. You get three. These aren’t determined before entering the game. You don’t have to head to options to switch things up. Rather, the over 200 puzzles are scattered in worlds with multiple paths. You have a standard Normal difficulty on the bottom route, then Hard and Hell difficulties above it. All three eventually lead to the stages and path on to the next area. All early levels sort of set the stage for the mechanics you’ll see in that area. For example, you’ll be introduced to moving blocks, platforms that drop, or springs that volley you into the air. The difference comes down to how taxing they can be.

Filmechanism is Satisfying for Players of Any Skill Level 3

In Normal difficulties, it is fairly easy to work out when you’ll need to take a picture, even without exploring. Hard and Hell typically bring in more than one battery, meaning multiple shots. Normal will use things like switches that require a certain number of platforms as a weight in typical ways. In Hard and Hell, getting to that goal isn’t so easy. It’s a thing where it’s easiest to see in practice. Which, granted, many puzzle games of this ilk do. But it’s just that Filmechanism handles its concepts quite well. It is always teaching you these tricks, even without the player realizing it. Not to mention you have those other difficulties right near and in front of you.

It’s that accessibility that helps make Filmechanism so much fun. This is a puzzle game that could challenge you. It will make you think. It’s just handled in such a way that it can feel like there is a real sense of growth. Like the base difficulty helps prepare you for concepts and ideas in Hard and Hell. Which is what happens in the best sorts of puzzle games. It doesn’t immediately ramp up the challenge and feel like there’s no connection. There are ties there. Plus the decision to have all puzzles available, clearly labeled, at once in a world helps encourage people to branch out.

Filmechanism is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Fault Milestone two side below trailer

Developer Alice in Dissonance has revealed a new trailer for its visual novel fault - milestone two side: below, and announced that the game would be delayed again to September 2021. The trailer was originally revealed at INDIE Live Expo 2021, and made available to Patreon ers 24 hours early. The trailer confirms that the game will release for the PC and Nintendo Switch, but strangely only the JP version mentions a PlayStation 4 release in the video thumbnail. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

fault - milestone two side: below is a sequel to fault - milestone two side: above released back in 2015. The single-player cinematic visual novel follows Selphine, a princess who was forced to escape after an assault on her homeland. The fault series of games is known for utilizing a parallax camera system that gives its characters and backgrounds added depth. With the new trailer, it looks as though Alice in Dissonance will also be adding character animations in fault - milestone two side: below.

Previously, the studio released a promotional video for the game during Tokyo Game Show 2020, with a tentative release date of Spring 2021. In the latest delay announcement, Alice in Dissonance states that the game was taking "longer than expected". However, the studio also assured fans that they were confident the game would not turn out like the prequel, Fault: Silence the Pendant, which saw numerous delays and setbacks during production.

Japanese publisher Phoenixx, best known for games such as the Tohou Hyouibana series of games, will be handling side: below's release. Originally, American video game publisher Sekai Project handled the localization of the first two games of the series before it laid off many of its employees in 2018.

Hyde Run for mobile devices

The Japanese musician Hyde will have a mobile game themed after himself. Phoenixx is releasing a new game titled Hyde Run for mobile devices within 2021. This game will mark the 20th anniversary of Hyde's solo career debut. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Developed by Shikaku Games, Hifuu Fragment is a visual novel based on the music CD series created by Shanghai Alice. Phoenixx described the title as a fan game or derivative work that feels like a puzzle or escape room game. This title takes place before the first Hifuu Club game, Rendai no Yakou ~ Ghostly Field Club. As for gameplay, the main characters of the Touhou Project visual novel will obtain memories called "fragments" from their conversations with each other. The story will then branch off from there. Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers, the indie fighter involving all sorts of heroines from the Touhou Project series, won’t only appear in Japan. Phoenixx will publish it in other regions. This means it will appear worldwide on April 22, 2021. It will be more expensive than the PC version and cost $34.99/29.99.

As is common in Touhou Project games, the cause of Touhou Hyouibana’s events is a new incident. Called Perfect Possession, players who go through the story mode can figure out what’s going on and unlock more content. There are also Training and Versus modes, with the option to play against other people locally or online.

Here’s a trailer looking at Touhou Hyouibana. While it is a spin-off from Twilight Frontier and Team Shanghai Alice, it is considered the 15.5th Touhou Project game. As such, the music should sound familiar as Zun was involved. The Perfect Possession mechanic helps provide an excuse for a tag team mechanic where you pick two of the 19 available characters and swap between them to fight. (Multiple heroines are introduced in the second half of the trailer.)

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers will come to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 worldwide on April 22, 2021. It is immediately available everywhere on PCs.

gensou skydrift ps4

illuCalab’s Touhou Project racing game is preparing to park itself on a new console. Gensou Skydrift is heading to the PS4 and, as you might expect from a 2021 release, will also be PS5 compatible. People will be able to get it for $23.99/€21.99 on March 9, 2021. Alice Margatroid and Rin Kaenbyou will also appear in all versions of the game that day.

Gensou Skydrift is a racing game where all of Gensokyo’s mystical and supernatural characters pair up and race. Story, Time Attack, and Versus modes are all available. Your goal is to help your duo come in first when facing off against the other 22 of the cast. Since you’re able to switch between which character is acting as the “cart” and which one is using spells and is the “driver,” it might feel a bit like Mario Kart: Double Dash.

Here’s the Gensou Skydrift PS4 trailer, so you have an idea of how it will look on Sony’s system. In addition to the new version, it also shows off both Alice and Rin as racers.

This comes over a year after the Switch and PC debut. The game showed up on both systems back in December 2019.

Gensou Skydrift will come to the PlayStation 4 on March 9, 2021. It is immediately available worldwide on the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Labyrinth of Touhou 2

Back in May 2020, CUBETYPE and Nise-Eikoku-Shinshidan announced that the dungeon RPG Labyrinth of Touhou 2 would be heading to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Now the companies announced that the game will release next week on July 16, 2020. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The game is a sequel to a Touhou fangame that plays similar to Etrian Odyssey or Wizardry. Various heroines from the series are the stars. During dungeon segments, you will move the party around a grid-based isometric map, all while encountering enemies along the way. Players can form parties of twelve, with four main fighters and eight backup characters, and you'll be able to customize each character. You can swap between in battle, which will allow players to take advantage of enemies’ elemental weaknesses. According to the developer, the game will have over 100 bosses to fight.

Story-wise, we will follow Reimu as she searches for the missing Amanomurakumo sword. When a giant tree that is high enough to pierce the sky sprouts in Gensokyo, she heads inside along with others to find out what is going on.

You can check out the trailer below:

Labyrinth of Touhou 2 Switch and PlayStation 4 copies will appear in Japan on July 16, 2020. The game is immediately available on PCs.
