Painted Ouran High School Host Club Haruhi Fujioka, Kyoya Ootori, and Tamaki Suoh Nendoroid prototypes appeared at AnimeJapan 2023

Back at WonHobby 36 in February 2023, Good Smile Company shared Ouran High School Host Club Nendoroid announcements. At the time, these were early in development. That meant that only Tamaki Suoh appeared as an unpainted prototype. Only tentative art of Haruhi Fujioka and Kyoya Ootori showed up. Now at AnimeJapan 2023, painted prototypes of all three appeared. In each case, only one face plate and pose appeared.

First, here's how Haruhi looks.

Next, here's Kyoya.

Finally, here's the Tamaki Nendoroid. It seems as though both the Kyoya and Tamaki Nendoroid designs feature the same "body" and uniform.

There's no release window yet for each Ouran High School Host Club Haruhi Fujioka, Kyoya Ootori, and Tamaki Suoh Nendoroid yet. However, as all three appeared in a painted form at this point, it could be possible that they'll all debut at about the same time.

Netflix Adding 13 New Anime

Netflix and Nippon TV have entered into a partnership, and as a result, the streaming service will be adding 13 new anime titles to its lineup. While most titles will be added at a later, unspecified date (or dates), 3 of them will be coming very soon. The first 38 episodes of Hunter x Hunter, all 26 episodes of Ouran High School Host Club, and all 26 episodes of Claymore will begin streaming on September 1, 2022. [Thanks, ANN!]

The complete list of titles coming to Netflix is as follows. They are listed in the order in which Netflix will stream them.

  • Hunter x Hunter
  • Ouran High School Host Club
  • Claymore
  • Death Note
  • Death Note Relight - Visions of a God
  • Death Note Relight 2 - L's Successors
  • From Me to You
  • From Me to You 2nd Season
  • Berserk (1997)
  • Parasyte ~the maxim~
  • NANA
  • Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting!

Hunter x Hunter will be available to stream in 104 countries upon the addition of its first 38 episodes. The remaining 110 episodes will be added sometime in the future. Additionally, Ouran High School Host Club will be available in 190 countries, Claymore in 136 countries, and the 3 Death Note titles in 14 countries. Information on the number of countries the other 7 titles will be available to stream in was not given, though some have appeared in Netflix's anime rotation previously in certain regions.

Among the titles being added, only Hunter x HunterBerserk, and Hajime no Ippo still have their original manga series ongoing. Notably, Hunter x Hunter will be releasing new chapters after a more than 3-and-a-half-year hiatus, and Berserk is continuing following creator Kentaro Miura's death. Netflix will begin adding its 13 new anime titles on September 1, 2022, with Hunter x Hunter, Ouran High School Host Club, and Claymore. The other 10 titles will be added later, though it is not known precisely when.

image Video games based on anime and manga tend to be hit or miss affairs. Idea Factory's Ouran Koukou Host-Bu DS, known to American fans as Ouran High School Host Club DS, is one of those hits. The game perfectly captures the humor and atmosphere of the series, and the full voice acting and simple controls make it an ideal otome visual novel for novices.

Ouran High School Host Club is a romantic comedy series surrounding Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at Ouran. Haruhi goes to the school's library one day to study, and goes into the music room in search of a quiet area. Instead, the Ouran High School Host Club, a club that is devoted to entertaining female students, is discovered.

The six (Tamaki, Kyoya, Hikaru, Kaoru, Huni and Mori) mistake Haruhi for a male "client." When attempting to escape their advances, Haruhi backs into an extremely expensive vase and breaks it. Tamaki, the club's president and "king" dictates that Haruhi will work off the debt at the club.

Then the club , one by one, discover that Haruhi is a girl.

She then continues to attend Ouran, dressed as a boy and working in the Host Club, garnering customer requests, in order to pay off the debt. Here's where Ouran DS picks up. Haruhi's a host, and she's working in the club alongside the guys. Along the way, the club will encounter adventures with Haruhi's childhood friend Sayuri, a outing in a water park, and a challenge by a rival high school host club chaired by Tamaki's childhood friend Jean-Pierre Leo.

imageOuran DS progresses in a manner similar to the manga and anime. While you're going through a month and a half period of time, you're also going through five "episodes." Each one offers a mini-story filled with humor and drama.

It also isn't totally a visual novel and otome game. While it's true that you're trying to ideally shoot for an ending with one of the six hosts, you're also struggling to meet a certain request quota by the end of the game. This is accomplished by sitting with Host Club guests and entertaining them. When you sit down with a girl, or a girl and another host, six topic icons pop up. You then have to choose the one that makes the girl, or girl and host, happiest in order to successfully . So there's a slight, extra strategic element added to the game.

If you enjoyed the Ouran anime, you'll love the DS game. Scenes from the anime are liberally sprinkled throughout the game in appropriate situations, as flashbacks and such. In fact, the game's opening is the anime's opening. All of the voice actors, major and minor, return to reprise their roles as new characters.

Even better, the DS exclusive characters Sayuri and Jean-Pierre Leo fit perfectly into the storyline. You'd think that original characters would disrupt the natural chemistry between characters and stories, but Sayuri and Leo are perfect additions to the cast as Haruhi and Tamaki's childhood friends. In one portion of the game, where Renge and Sayuri are acting as announcers at a series of event, Sayuri's reserved nature perfectly balances out Renge's exuberance.

image There's another area where Ouran DS excels - the voice acting. I've noticed in many DS games featuring substantial amounts of voice acting that the quality seems second rate. It can be muffled, quiet and even a tad warped. That isn't the case with Ouran DS. The voice acting sounds absolutely perfect - you'd think you were listening to the PS2 version and not the DS one. A nice touch is that Idea Factory got Maaya Sakamoto to provide voice acting for Haruhi, the heroine.

As for extras, it is almost as though Idea Factory included six new extra stories or mini-episodes - one for each character. Each of these extra episodes uses a new choice option, where players make Haruhi nod yes or no to answer questions and advance the story, and two new CG scenes.

I would definitely recommend either this game, or one of the Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side DS games, to someone who's always wanted to try an otome game but has been worried about the language barrier. Ouran DS is easy to play, enjoy and understand, even if your Japanese is only able. It's a delightful game and a wonderful port. Plus, it's genuinely funny, and definitely one of the best otome games I've played this year.

image Video games based on anime and manga tend to be hit or miss affairs.

Ouran Koukou Host-Bu DS (also known as Ouran High School Host Host Club DS) is incredibly easy to navigate and play, especially if you've played other Idea Factory visual novels like Hiiro no Kakera DS. This, combined with the fact that the game is fully voiced, makes it an ideal game for importers with a general understanding of spoken Japanese who've always wanted to try an otome game.

The main menu is very easy to navigate. One of the six of the Host Club will appear on the top screen, greeting you. There are five options on the bottom - New Game, Continue, Options, Gallery and the extra stories. The gallery contains galleries of the CG images and anime segments unlocked throughout the game, and the last option contains one brief, extra story for each character that includes 2 extra CGs.

When you start playing, you'll find the Ouran DS touch screen looks nearly identical to the one in Hiiro no Kakera DS. The center button advances the text. The upper left button can be pressed to make a quick save, the top middle button brings up a menu and the upper right button is for loading the quick save. The bottom line of buttons includes one that lets you view and hear past dialogue, toggle the speed of text should you start the auto-play feature and a button to start/stop the auto-play options.

You can also use the face buttons to access these controls. The L and R buttons correspond to the quick save and load buttons. Y starts the auto-play feature, X brings up the menu, A makes the story advance or confirms a choice and the B button makes the text box on the above screen disappear.

The in-game menu brings up four options when you access it. The upper left button in this menu lets you save your game, and the button next to it lets you load a game save. The bottom right button lets you return to the main menu, and the button next to it brings up the options menu.

There's one other interesting menu that will pop up one or two times during each "day" in the game, and that's the host menu. Since Haruhi is a member of the Host Club, trying to repay a debt, she'll often have to entertain hosts. When this happens, the quick save, menu and quick load buttons will appear on top. Directly below will be six icons with different images on there. You choose one to interact with the guest. If there's one guest you're entertaining, the goal is to pick the option that makes a heart pop up next to the guest so you'll make the best impression. If there's a guest and a host, the goal is to pick the icon that makes a musical note pop up next to both characters. A good idea is to quick save before making a choice, so if you don't pick the best option you can quick load and try again.

At the end of each "day" Haruhi will return home and see how the day went. The top screen will display how popular Haruhi is compared to the other six hosts, and the bottom screen will show how much Tamaki, Kyoya, Hikaru, Kaoru, Hani and Mori like Haruhi.

Since the controls for Ouran DS are so simple, there's full voice acting (all the voice actors from the Ouran anime return to voice their characters) and the DS is region-free, it makes a great choice for someone with beginning/intermediate knowledge of Japanese who wants to try a visual novel.
