Square Enix has published chapters 5 and 6 of the NieR: Undecided Option special novel. These two chapters are also the last ones to conclude the web novel series that the company made to mark the NieR series' 15th anniversary.

The company has gradually published chapters for the NieR: Undecided Option web novel in the last two weeks. The first batch appeared on April 19, 2025, with the second chapter themed after NieR:Automata. The second wave published on April 25, 2025, included a chapter dedicated to the now-defunct mobile game, NieR Re[in]carnation. The final chapter that's just published has a focus on the siblings Nier and Yonah from NieR Replicant.

As a reminder, NieR Replicant initially appeared exclusively in Japan for PlayStation 3 on April 22, 2010. Square Enix only localized the Japanese Xbox 360 version of NieR Gestalt, which featured an older protagonist, as NieR for both PS3 and Xbox 360 in the West throughout late April 2010. The company later released an upgraded version of NieR Replicant with the extra subtitle ver.1.22474487139 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC worldwide in April 2021.

The NieR: [U]ndecided Option special novel, made for the series' 15th anniversary in 2025, is readily available to read in the Japanese language.

Yoko Taro Talked About NieR: Automata Inspiration and Endings

As part of the NieR series’ 15th anniversary, Square Enix released an interview with Creative Director Yoko Taro and Producer Yosuke Saito about the games, and that involved details about both the NieR and NieR: Automata inspiration and endings. In addition to citing Evangelionas an influence for the second game, the two talked about certain choices and endings for both the first and second titles.

First, the Evangelion element came up when Square Enix specifically brought up NieR: Automata inspirations. Yoko Taro mentioned that anime. He then also said, “But then, everything I make is influenced by Evangelion.”

As for the NieR and NieR: Automata endings, those came up twice. First, Saito brought it up. He mentioned how he wasn’t “supposed” to know about NieR and its Ending D deleting save data. However, he brought up how he did find out ahead of time.

Here’s Yosuke Saito’s statement about that:

“Mr. Yoko kept the fact that the game deletes your save file a secret from me, but some other of the team revealed this to me in secret. My favorite memory is probably choosing to let this slide. "It's fine!" I said. "It's probably just an homage to Dragon Quest!”

Although apparently it wasn't an homage to Dragon Quest (laughs).”

Finally, Yoko Taro discussed the multiple endings in NieR: Automata. He cited how his past games and Square Enix’s requests affect design decisions. He noted, “That's an idea that we brought over from Drakengard. And the reason we did it is that Square Enix told us to ‘add more content!’”

As a reminder, we may hear about NieR Reincarnation again soon. The anniversary site included a teaser referencing the now-closed mobile game. An update will appear there on May 2, 2025.

NieR is available on the PS3 and Xbox 360, NieR Replicant is available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and NieR: Automata is on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Yoko Taro Talked About Making a NieR Sequel Game

In a recent Famitsu interview with NieR series creator Yoko Taro and other of the Japanese games industry, the developer said that he would like to make a NieR sequel. As part of the creator roundtable interview, he was ed by Too Kyo Games' Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi, who just made Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, and 428: Shibuya Scramble Director Jiro Ishii. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Nearing the end of the interview, the developers were asked what would they like to try moving forward, and what do they have their sights on currently. When it was Yoko Taro’s turn, the developer answered by saying that he has a project going on, but can say nothing about it at the moment. “I mean, what kind of answer does the media expect to this question?” Yoko Taro jokingly added.

The interviewer took the chance to directly ask if Yoko Taro would like to make a sequel in the NieR series, or expand other games he's worked on. He then replied with the following, “Let it be said. I would like to make the sequel to the (NieR) series that everyone is so highly anticipating.” However, whether the aforementioned new project is a sequel is unconfirmed.

Earlier in the interview, the developers talked about IP rights, since The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is the first IP owned by Too Kyo Games. In regards to the topic, Yoko Taro said that he doesn't own the IP for his games. However, he owns the rights for some of the manga based on them.

In addition, Yoko Taro had some words to say about the style of games that Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi make:

"You two can't help yourselves, locking the characters somewhere, making them go through hell, and then meeting a terrible end. You have a mysterious urge. I think it's amazing how each of Kodaka's and Uchikoshi's scenarios have such different styles even though their progression is so similar."

As a reminder, Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito said in May 2024 that they were in talks about a new game that “might or might not be related to the NieR series.” However, no news about this project have appeared since.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is readily available for the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC via Steam. You can read our review of the game here.

Yosuke Saito Wants to Do Something for NieR Series Anniversary in 2025

NieR and NieR: Automata Producer Yosuke Saito said that he would like to do something for the 15th anniversary of the series in 2025. The producer vaguely teased the possibility of a new game, but avoided giving a confirmation. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The direct quote from the End of Year interview with 4Gamer with Yosuke Saito roughly translates to the following:

2025 will also be the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so we would like to do something! What should we do? Maybe the next game, or... developments about ‘that...’ I have been listening to everyone's expectations. It is complicated... Regardless, since I will be less involved as a direct producer, I hope you can patiently look forward.

Meanwhile, NieR series Director Yoko Taro also participated in the interview. When asked about his expectations and plans for next year, Yoko Taro said that last year he already commented speaking out against all the wars going on around the world, and that these haven’t ended at all.

As a reminder, Saito said on May 2024 that he was working with Yoko Taro on “something that might or might not be NieR.” Additionally, Square Enix recently revealed that NieR: Automata recently sured 9 million units sold worldwide. The original NieR released in April 22, 2010, and 2025 will mark the 15th anniversary of the series. Meanwhile, NieR: Automata released 7 years ago in 2017.

NieR: Automata is available worldwide on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. NieR: Replicant is available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Naraka: Bladepoint Nier Event

The Nier series event is live alongside the new patch for Naraka: Bladepoint. The event was originally announced back in July, 2023, with its own theme song titled "The Flame of Fate." The event launched on August 10, 2023, and it will remain available until September 6, 2023. An official site for the event is open.

During the event, players will be able to earn cosmetic rewards or purchase outfits and weapon skins based on Nier characters like 2B, 9S, and Kainé. Completing all the event quests will also net you a legendary longsword skin called "Replicant·Moonrise," while opening mythic treasures gives you a chance to earn the legendary rarity 2P outfit.

As well as a slate of balance adjustments, the update also brings new mechanisms and map changes to the game, as well as the new character Tessa with her own event, Vixen's Trick.

Naraka: Bladepoint has previously collaborated with games like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty with an event that allowed players to earn a replica of Lu Bu's mask.

Naraka: Bladepoint is immediately available on the PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Series X/S, with the Nier crossover event taking place August 10, 2023 through September 6, 2023. You can read the patch notes at the official site.

NieR: Orchestra Concert 12024 Trailer Appears

Square Enix shared, then pulled, a new trailer on YouTube announcing a NieR: Orchestra Concert 12024. In the past, these concerts offered opportunities to hear songs from the series. Merchandise would also be sold alongside the events, with Blu-rays of the performance following. No date was set, but the numbers at the end often refer to the date. For example, the 12020 was a 2020 concert. Key art also appeared. [Thanks, Wario64!]

The subtitle for this performance is "the end of data." A few of the highlights came up in the video. For example, Eric Roth will be the conductor. In the past, he conducted the A New World: intimate music from Final Fantasy performance. Like the theatrical one before, there will be a new story from Yoko Taro presented. It will star 2B and 9S, with Kira Buckland and Kyle McCarley reprising their roles for it. Those parts of the performance will be pre-recorded.

As for the key art, it features 2B and 9S staring at one of Emil's heads while standing in a dilapidated city.
[gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="972765" link="file"]

We've seen quite a few of these kinds of NieR series performances before. For example, the 12018 appeared in 2018, and Square Enix later sold the Blu-ray. there was NieR: Theatrical Orchestra 12020 in 2020, which ended up canceled due to the COVID pandemic. However, a Blu-ray did still appear for it.

The NieR: Orchestra Concert 12024 is on the way and, judging by the name, could appear in 2024. NieR Automata is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, while NieR Repliant is on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Nier Automata Church

The NieR fan community has been in an uproar over the last several days, following the saga of a "secret church" area supposedly discovered five years after the game's release. Now the secret of the NieR Automata church has been revealed. As it turns out, it's neither an elaborate hoax, nor a bit of viral marketing for something new to do with NieR. Rather, it's a bit of both. According to its creators, the whole event was a complex, engrossing stunt designed to show off a powerful new set of modding tools.

You can read more about the beginnings of the stunt in this post. But to summarize, an anonymous player going by "sadfutago" began posting videos and screens a never-before-seen church area supposedly found in NieR Automata's Copied City location. Many were left wondering whether the thing was a hoax or actual, newly-discovered content in the game. The case for it being "legitimate" was bolstered by the fact that at the time, NieR Automata modding tools and techniques were widely considered incapable of fashioning entirely new areas as demonstrated in the videos and screenshots posted. Combined with cryptic references to the rest of the NieR franchise, some suggested it was a viral marketing trick to promote the Switch port of Automata, or even a new NieR game.

Things reached a fever pitch yesterday and today, as more and more elaborate screens and videos from the secret NieR Automata church were shown, referencing titles like Drakengard 3 and showing off assets seemingly imported from that game into NieR Automata's engine. By then some, including veteran modder and "Final Secret" discoverer Lance McDonald, had concluded that this indeed was evidence of a "bleeding-edge" modding project rather than anything official. But without definite confirmation, speculation continued.

The climactic moment came when sadfutago updated their Reddit profile with a link to a Twitch stream, as well as some broken Japanese promising that the stunt was "not an ARG (Alternate Reality Game)" and "not official". Then they went live, broadcasting themselves playing through a lengthy, newly-constructed gameplay sequence, created with a new set of modding tools. The creators of the NieR Automata secret church were s DevolasRevenge, Woeful_Wolf, and RaiderB. The team thanked the community, and apologized for "misleading everyone". According to them, they were going for "a cut content/secret, not ARG" in their construction of the stunt.

NieR Automata Secret Church

The NieR Automata church creators also promised that they would make the tools open-source, so the wider modding community can benefit from a set of tools capable of doing things previously available only to NieR Automata's developers.

In the end, while the saga of the secret church turned out not to be related to anything "official", it did inaugurate a new era in NieR Automata modding, and provided some excitement around a beloved game.

NieR Automata is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch port is due out on October 6, 2022. Those who might want to play content created with the new tools will need the PC version of the game.
