The place for all of the best visual novels and dating sims used to be the PlayStation Vita, but following its tragic demise the Nintendo Switch has more than stepped up to the plate. Of all the modern consoles, the Switch is the place to go to play games with romance options, meaning that players are spoiled for choice. If you’ve been browsing the Switch’s library looking for your next dating sim visual novel to play, we have ten of our favorites that we want to recommend.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! 336h46

The original Doki Doki Literature Club launched in 2017, so it’s likely that you know the twist by now. Aside from being a romance visual novel, it’s also a horror game with plenty of meta, and fourth-wall breaking techniques that work to make you feel uneasy, and chill your bones. However, the horror elements of Doki Doki Literature Club make for a more touching and overall more emotional story and game.

The original was free-to-play, but the Switch version Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! adds so many more touching moments. There are a number of additional episodes that show our four main characters interacting with each other outside of the titular literature club. You get to learn more about their backstories, as well as their relationships to each other. Doki Doki is so much more than a visual novel, and for those who love puzzles and easter eggs, you’ll find a lot more by exploring the in-game PC.

Collar X Malice 64652j

Screenshot of the protagonist and Mineo shouting at each other from Collar X Malice
Images via Otomate

On the surface Collar X Malice is your standard otome visual novel, but the themes are intriguing enough to carry the story by itself even if you aren’t into dudes. Collar X Malice is set in a time where mass police and government incompetence has led to the rise of a vigilante group, Adonis, which has pledged to sort out the crime and inequality that is rampant throughout the city. The group holds an eye-for-an-eye mentality, and Collar X Malice brings up the moral dilemma of how to get justice when the system doesn’t work.

Our protagonist is a cop living at a time when confidence in the police is almost zero. She approaches a private agency and asks them for help getting to the bottom of the current vigilantism crisis. What’s interesting is that the game doesn’t tell you what to believe, instead it is portrayed as the morally gray topic it truly is. Each route leads to the true ending, giving you a sense of accomplishment as you make your way through the story. One of the best overarching stories in any romance game.

Chaos;Child 6s263k

Key Art from the Chaos;Child Double Pack

Chaos;Child is part of what I like to call the semicolon series that includes the hugely popular Steins;Gate. Just like Steins;Gate it has an intriguing story you can enjoy without the romance, but there are also romantic undertones between our protagonist, and the many women in his life. In Japan they released a side story that is exclusively a dating sim to tie in with the game called Chaos;Child Love Chu Chu. However, you can experience romance without learning another language.

Chaos;Child is set in a world where several people have awoken to their psychic abilities. While these superhuman talents should be seen as a benefit, a serial killer is on the loose targeting those who have these powers. Knowing several people with these special abilities, our protagonist is desperate to solve the murders before everyone he loves is gone. Just like Steins;Gate it has multiple endings, and you’ll want to play through several times to see all of the positive and negative outcomes.

Nurse Love Addiction 1sf6a

Screenshot of two characters kissing from Nurse Love Addiction
Image via Kogado Studio

There are two games in this series available on Nintendo Switch, but they are both stand alone tales, and Nurse Love Addiction is our favorite of the two. The Nurse Love stories are yuri dating sims, meaning that they are based on the relationships between two women, and they play very differently to your standard heterosexual romance. Each route and romance shows a deep tenderness, and is (mostly) cemented in reality rather than an emotional rollercoaster.

Our protagonist Asuka is floating aimlessly through life like a jellyfish on the waves. She decides to the nursing school where her younger sister studies. She even moves into the same dorm as her sister as she feels like she can’t manage on her own. It’s not just about the romantic partnerships that she forges along the way, but Asuka’s personal growth as she tries to stand on her own for the first time.

The House in Fata Morgana 4473w

Key art of the Maid from The House in Fata Morgana lying in a field of roses

The House in Fata Morgana is very strict on the meaning of visual novel. There is almost no player interaction with the game, but the story is so intricately woven, and expansive that you don’t need to have an impact on it to improve the experience. The master of the house wakes up with no knowledge of their past, and the manor’s maid by their side. She guides you through the doors of the titular house telling various stories from throughout the domicile’s history.

The thread between the stories is a young person with albinism who appears in every tale no matter the time period. You have to figure out how your past ties to the house’s other residents, and why history has repeated itself time after time. It is both one of the longest and highest-rated visual novels of all time, and once you have played it for yourself, you’ll see why it is worth every word.

Muv-Luv 3c5p41

Screenshot of Sumika eating a burger from Muv-Luv
Image via age

People say that the Muv-Luv trilogy reaches its stride with the second game Muv-Luv Unlimited, however, we recommend that players start where it all begins with Muv-Luv. The first game in the series is a simple slice-of-life adventure where our protagonist Takeru can choose between the many women in his life. The main two love interests are Takeru’s childhood best friend, and a rich but sheltered girl who is new to town, but there are other girls in his class he can date too.

This simple setup is vital for fully understanding and enjoying the next two entries, Muv-Luv Unlimited and Muv-Luv Alternative. It introduces you to most of the characters to the story, and lets you see Takeru’s normal life before things go off the deep end. Without spoiling what is in store, it’s an epic adventure dating sim that is worth sinking a hundred hours or so into.

Gnosia 3u4o2q

Key art from Gnosia
Image via Petit Depotto

If you’ve ever played Among Us you know the basic plot of Gnosia. You are out on a space station with various others, and some of them are infected with Gnosia, which turns them against their crewmates. You use social deduction to figure out who has the disease and put them in cryogenic stasis before they wreak havoc on the ship. The twist here is that you will be reliving the experience over and over with increasingly more complicated mechanics.

Not everything continues between loops, but your knowledge of each crewmate, the things they like and the things they do will expand each time you meet them. This means that every loop your deductions – in theory – become more accurate as you get to know how people work, and how they would act in certain situations. Once you have met all the characters Gnosia opens up, and you can control different factors in each loop and get closer to certain cohabitees.

Jack Jeanne 213c38

Image of two characters dancing from Jack Jeanne
Screenshot by Siliconera

One of our favorite recent otome games, we almost considered putting it on the list of dating sims that aren’t visual novels. Unlike many of the other games on this list, Jack Jeanne has a number of gameplay modes that don’t surround player choice, most notably the numerous rhythm sections. You play a promicoming actor, but the best acting school where you live only accepts men, and you’re a woman. However, amazed by your talent the director approaches you and asks you to enroll while disguising your gender.

In an all boys acting school, males have to take on the female roles in the performances. This is why students are split into the mascs, the Jacks, and the femmes, the Jeannes. Because of this the characters of Jack Jeanne are used to people challenging the typical gender norms, and a new normal emerges in this enclosed society. The play on gender, and inclusion of rhythm game elements leads to a truly unique otome experience.

Slay the Princess 432h

Screenshot of the Princess after she has been slain in Slay the Princess
Image via Siliconera

Unlike Jack Jeanne the gameplay in Slay the Princess focuses heavily on the choices you make. That being said, it gives you seemingly endless options to choose from. Each fork in the road has literally dozens of options you can choose from, making you feel more in charge of where the story goes than most other games. Each decision you make has a drastic outcome on the story in a way that feels refreshing when compared to the majority of dating sims.

There are only three characters in Slay the Princess: the Princess, the Narrator, and you. The Princess changes based on things you say, how you treat her, and how you react to her. Sometimes you go past the point of no return, and there is no way to undo the things you have done, but that is the point. While the Princess and you wrestle over and over in ways that can range from sweet, to slaughterous, to sad, it truly is a love story.

VA-11 HALL-A g5f1o

Screenshot of Dorothy crying with the drink mixing station on the right side from VA-11 HALL-A
Image via Sukeban Games

VA-11 HALL-A’s catchphrase is “It’s time to mix drinks and change lives” and that describes the game precisely. You play Jill, a bartender in a futuristic saloon, whose job is to make drinks and talk to customers. Players can influence the story by giving the customers the drinks they want, rather than the ones they ask for, because in the world of VA-11 HALL-A the customer isn’t always right.

It’s a deep character study surrounding not just Jill, and the affection she holds for her boss, but each person that comes to the bar, and the effect that just having someone to talk to has on their lives. Outside of the story, you can use the wages from the bar to design your room and make things feel more homey, making Jill just a little more upbeat. It’s a story about caring for others, but also taking care of yourself.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien delayed

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: Enhanced Edition is still not available yet as of October 22, 2024, because it keeps getting delayed by rating review issues. aNCHOR has delayed the visual novel's release three times, and the latest announcement no longer included a definite release date.

aNCHOR originally planned to release Kimi ga Nozomu Eien on October 17, 2024 in the Americas' time zones, which was October 18, 2024 in the Japanese time zone. But right on the supposed release date, the company announced a one-day delay to noon JST on October 19, 2024. It cited necessary fixes and adjustments for the rating review.

The issues did not seem to get resolved in time, though. On October 19, 2024, aNCHOR announced that Kimi ga Nozomu Eien got delayed again to noon JST on October 22, 2024, for the same reason. And that brought us to the third delay announcement on the latter date, where aNCHOR also stopped giving a new estimated release date.

As a refresher, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien originally appeared as an adults-only visual novel for PCs in Japan in 2001. When Alchemist and Princess Soft ported the title to the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 respectively in 2002 and 2003, they turned it into an all-ages rated game. The Enhanced Edition release on Steam will also be based on the all-ages version, although aNCHOR noted that it will contain some references to sexual content that may be inappropriate for younger players.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: Enhanced Edition will be available worldwide in Japanese and English on PCs via Steam.

Review: Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered Still Stuns on the Switch

Muv-Luv is one of those games series where there’s one entry that is pretty close to being a masterpiece, but you do need to go through everything leading up to it to truly get the most out of it. Muv-Luv Alternative, which is available now on the Switch via a Remastered version, is that installment. Age tells a great story in it, to be sure, but it really becomes fantastic and ties everything together if you also went through Muv-Luv Extra and Unlimited as well.

Editor’s Note: There will be some spoilers for Muv-Luv Unlimited in this Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered Switch review.  491g2g

Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered picks up where Unlimited left off. Takeru Shirogane finds himself in his room, but he is not back in his original “reality” from Extra. Rather, he still re everything that happened in the previous two games, but finds himself back at the beginning of the story as seen in Unlimited. However, since he has all of the experiences and knowledge from that life, he knows the dire fate that awaits him and the earth. Resolved to make a difference and use that knowledge to avoid the previous outcome, he heads directly to the UN 11th Force Yokohama base to reunite with Yuuko Kouzuki. After convincing her of who he is and what he experienced by sharing what he knows about the Alternative IV and V plans to deal with the BETA invasion, he once again is assigned to Unit 207 alongside Meiya Mitsurugi, Chizuru Sakaki, Kei Ayamine, Miki Tamase, and Mikoto Yoroi, working with them, Kasumi Yashiro, and other characters toward a better future.

Right from the outset, you can see how far Age and Muv-Luv has come in Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered’s earliest moments. A big part of this involves Takeru’s character development. To be honest, I wasn’t his biggest fan in Extra! He’s not the worst dating sim protagonist, but he’s definitely an immature kid. In Unlimited, I felt like he really grows on us. He starts as that same person as he was in the initial entry, but we see how his experiences with the BETA, heartbreak, and other stressors force him to grow up into someone more dependable and even irable. I suppose you could say his appearance here in Alternative is his final form. From the very start, he’s much more committed, mature, and resolved. Like I would trust him as a person. As a testament to Age’s writing and direction, I honestly felt proud of him, what he accomplished, and how he really has these good intentions to help the people he loves and the world.

That care put into the script and character development also comes through in pretty much every other element of Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered, making the Switch release a pretty good time. (The localization remains pretty great, just like in the first parts.) Little plot points and threads that came up as far back as Extra are touched upon here, and I really appreciated the pay-off. Going through the three one after another on the system also meant I probably picked up more on them through these playthroughs, so I’d definitely recommend anyone else interested take that approach as well. While I feel like it’s most evident with certain characters, such as Meiya, Kasumi, and another person I won’t name, in general there’s a lot going on and people get quite a bit of attention.

Age Anchor game

Also, the story absolutely goes places. While previous games involved more influencing of the routes to varying degrees, that doesn’t happen in Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered. However, given what’s going on, it makes sense and feels more natural. Yes, you can still make choices and see some minor changes as a result. But in general, you’re working toward one specific ending. As a result, I felt like Age really got to go full-force into making it as impactful as possible. Given how connected folks may be to certain characters as a result of going through these harrowing situations for three games now and possibly romancing them in previous entries, there are absolute gut-wrenching and tearjerker parts.

As with Muv-Luv Remastered, Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered also looks and runs wonderfully on the Switch. It still remains a dynamic visual novel, with character portraits and sprites appearing at different parts of the screen to show motion, extra positions and posing for greater emotional impact, and care put into CGs and other elements to amp up tension or capture action from different angles. It’s all handled quite well. It’s easy to play. I also felt it was fantastic in Handheld mode.

With Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered, Age tells such a striking and emotional story. The events of it stick with you, especially if you put in the time and went through every part of the adventure. The only downside to it all is that it really does demand that dedication. The pay-off is fantastic if you are willing to go through Extra and Unlimited first. I would still say it is a great story if you don’t, but the character development and hints leading up to what happens here builds in a great way and results in a fascinating sci-fi story.

Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered is available for the Nintendo Switch. It is also available on the Vita and PC worldwide and the PS3, Xbox 360, and mobile devices in Japan.

Muv-Luv Tactics Is a Muv-Luv Strategy Game

Anchor announced a new strategy game called Muv-Luv Tactics. At the moment, ahead of crowdfunding, some initial images, a teaser trailer, a Discord server, and a social media opened.

It seems Muv-Luv Tactics will be set in the series’ universe and involve players using the Senjutsuki Tactical Surface Fighter mechs to fight BETA. A few pieces of initial art also appeared showing some of the TSF units that will apparently appear in the game. One of them is the Type-00 Takemikazuchi 00R model used by Meiya Mitsurugi in the Muv-Luv series. Another looks like the EF-2000 Typhon, in particular the Zerberus model. The last one was the F-22A Raptor.

Here’s how those three stills look:

The initial teaser video also features looks at those same three TSF mechs. That video begins with the Typhon, before moving on to the Takemikazuchi and Raptor.

The last mainline Muv-Luv releases involved the original games debuting on the Nintendo Switch. People could pick up Muv-Luv Remastered, which included Extra and Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered. They are available individually or bundled together.

Muv-Luv Tactics is in development, and a crowdfunding campaign is planned. The original Muv-Luv games are available worldwide on the Switch, Vita, and PC. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative Remasters Switch Library in July

Back in December 2023, we learned that Muv-Luv Remastered and Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered would come to the Nintendo Switch in Japan in March 2024. Now, we know they’ll head to the eShop outside Japan both individually and in a double pack together on July 11, 2024.

Depending on the version or bundle, the price changes. The original Muv-Luv Remastered is $29.99. However, at launch it is $26.99. Muv-Luv Alternative is slightly more expensive, as it costs $39.99. A launch discount drops that price to $35.99. Buying the two games together at once is slightly cheaper, as that double pack is $64.99. The launch sale makes the pair $58.49.

The original Muv-Luv is a fairly typical visual novel with romance elements and starts off mostly normal enough. Takeru is going through his normal life, when a young woman named Meiya shows up and moves in with him and starts attending his school. He essentially ends up split between her and his childhood friend Sumika.

However, in Muv-Luv Alternative things drastically change. He wakes up one day to find himself in a version of the world where aliens are invading, and the friends and love interests he re from the original game are all working to fight against them. This installment ended up also inspiring an anime adaptation, which is streaming on Crunchyroll as of time of writing.

Muv-Luv Remastered and Muv-Luv Alternative Remastered will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 11, 2024 worldwide, following a Japanese release in March 2024. The games are also on the PlayStation Vita and PC worldwide, as well as the PS3, Xbox 360, and mobile devices in Japan. Project Mikhail: A Muv-Luv War Story is on PCs, but its Switch version hasn’t appeared.

Immortals Muv-Luv Alternative

aNCHOR has finalized the release date for Immortals: Muv-Luv Alternative. It will release the free-to-play mobile action RPG in Japan on March 17, 2022.

Immortals will feature many people from the entire Muv-Luv universe. The game will not only feature characters from the mainline titles like Takeru Shirogane and Meiya Mitsurugi. It will also include characters from other spin-offs and related titles, such as Yui Takamura from Total Eclipse and The Euro Front's Ilfriede von Feulner.

All players who start playing Immortals: Muv-Luv Alternative during its launch period will receive Mikoto Yoroi as an SR-grade character. If the game reaches 50,000 pre-registrations by the launch day, aNCHOR will add the TSF-Type00A Takemikazuchi as an additional bonus.

aNCHOR initially revealed this game as Project Immortal in December 2019. A Japanese Muv-Luv fan published the self-made project on Twitter, but it became official after the series author Yoshimune Kouki noticed it. In October 2021, the publisher originally announced February 2022 as a release window for the mobile game. However, it later pushed back the release window to mid-March 2022. The game's developers needed more time to fine-tune the game's features before its official release.

Immortals: Muv-Luv Alternative will be available for Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan with a release date of March 17, 2022.

muv-luv verse english

There are many facets to the Muv-Luv series, from the games to the manga and anime. Now, there’s a new English video going over one of its more social elements, Muv-Luv Verse. This is an online experience currently in its version 0.5 phase in Japan. The goal is to offer an online space where people can take part in experiences and minigames related to the series and its characters.

This Muv-Luv Verse English trailer begins by looking at what version 0.5 of the site can do. It mentions how people can make videos. Then, it references the Muv-Luv Projekt Mikhail spin-off game and Muv-Luv Alternative anime adaptation. It then talks about messaging methods. In both the video and the description, details about things to come also are mentioned. While the video went over minigames and streams, the description mentioned new ways to interact or spend money. For example, there could be Muv-Luv NFTs to buy or AIs to interact with when you go to Muv-Luv Verse. An image of gacha machines also appeared.

Here’s the full Muv-Luv Verse English trailer. However, it doesn’t show any actual footage of the experience.

Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative are available worldwide on the PlayStation Vita and PC and on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well in Japan. Project Mikhail is in development for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Muv-Luv Unlimited The Day After Steam

The Steam release for Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After will see a slight delay. The official Twitter for the series updated fans with a playful tweet. The publisher is now aiming to release the title sometime in early February.

Originally intended for release in late January, Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After is a collection of short stories in the series. The publisher claims it's the series' "darkest and most downer game yet." Based on the Alternative Chronicles off-shoot, The Day After details the events following Unlimited, when the hero fails. The collection will have four episodes in total. Check out the tweet below:

The Muv-Luv series is very expansive with many off-shoots. The Muv-Luv Alternative manga recently released in English on storefronts like Amazon. The series also had a Kickstarter in 2015, and the final video game from that project, Muv-Luv Photonmelodies, launched in 2020.

After a slight delay, the Steam version of Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After will now launch in early February.

Muv-Luv Expo

Fans of the Muv-Luv franchise have had a lot of info to chew on over the last few weeks, but it has to be said that that chewing can be harder for fans who don't speak or read Japanese. And with Muv-Luv being a pretty popular brand, there are plenty of those. Fear not, for aNCHOR has you covered with a Muv-Luv Expo: The Summer of (Muv)Luv event, coming on July 1, 2020.

According to the official site, aNCHOR planned to attend this year's Anime Expo, but unfortunately 2020 happened. Muv-Luv Expo: The Summer of (Muv)Luv is the developer's way of putting that info out, by redirecting the resources that would've been spent on Anime Expo attendance to facilitating an online-only event that any fan of Muv-Luv can enjoy. Other than the planned July 1, 2020 date, not much other information was made available. According to a countdown timer on the teaser site, more will be revealed in a week on June 19, 2020.

All things considered, it's probably wise not to expect a huge amount of surprises from the event. The current slate of Muv-Luv related projects got a series of trailers back in May 2020. Barring an announcement that they've been keeping under wraps (entirely possible), it's most likely we'll see information about localization plans for Project Mikhail, Project Immortal, and the planned Muv-Luv Alternative anime adaptation.

In any case, we'll see what happens at Muv-Luv Expo: The Summer of (Muv)Luv on July 1, 2020. Players with a hundred hours or so to burn could also play through Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative, both available now on PC via Steam./

Muv-Luv

Muv-Luv franchise developer âge stirred up some excitement earlier in May 2020, as it announced a raftload of new Muv-Luv franchise projects via its livestream. Those announcements included a teaser for an anime adaptation of Muv-Luv Alternative. Unfortunately, the hype was dampened somewhat as technical troubles during the stream reduced trailers for two new spin-off games, titled Project Immortal and Project Mikhail, to low-framerate slideshows. Thankfully, publisher aNCHOR has stepped up and ed high-quality versions of the teasers to the official Youtube channel. [Thanks, Twinfinite!]

Muv-Luv is a popular sci-fi visual novel franchise that recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary. It originated, unusually, as a spin-off of âge romantic visual novel Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (aka Rumbling Hearts) and its sequel Akane Maniax, and then developed into its own three-part epic. The main trilogy consists of Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative, and they themselves have spawned their own spin-offs. For example, Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse and Schwarzesmarken  are both animated spin-offs set in the timeline of Alternative. In other words, it's a whole thing.

Here's the trailer for Project Immortal, a top-down action-game born from a indie doujin project. It shows players piloting the franchise's signature TSF mecha against large hordes of BETA aliens.

Project Mikhail aims to put players more directly in the TSF cockpit, since it's a mecha action game in the vein of various Gundam titles, Armored Core, or Daemon x Machina. Players will be able to customize their TSF's loadouts, go to battle against the BETA, and experience a narrative via a more traditional adventure game component.

Lastly, a better teaser for the Alternative anime was also on hand to show footage of TSF Takemikazuchi chopping and shooting its way through more BETA:

Project Immortal, Project Mikhail, and Muv-Luv Alternative's anime adaptation are tentatively scheduled for a 2021 debut. The main Muv-Luv visual novel trilogy is available on PC via Steam.

Muv Luv Alternative

During the 20th anniversary event, Muv-Luv series developer âge announced after many years that Muv-Luv Alternative was finally getting its own anime series. Today on their livestream, the general public finally got a peek at some Tactical Surface Fighters fighting BETAs in combat. The anime teaser is the same as the one shown at the 20th anniversary event privately.

Muv-Luv Alternative is a sequel to Muv-Luv, specifically taking place after Muv-Luv Unlimited. Our protagonist, Takeru, wakes up in his room seemingly sent back to his original world, but it turns out that he's been sent to before the events of Unlimited. Armed with the memories and muscle memory from the previous timeline, Takeru makes it his mission to adapt quicker, and find a way for the Alternative IV plan to succeed so that the military will never need to reach Alternative V, which was explored in the previous game.

The reason why the teaser was finally released publicly was due to âge's livestream event being so popular that they decided to do a retweet campaign, where the producer would convince the production committee to show off the teaser publicly if the tweet reached 10,000 retweets. While it didn't make the number, it got close enough that they decided to do it anyways.

Check out the teaser below (starts at 2:34:16 mark):

The Muv-Luv Alternative anime is in production.
