venom hololive

Five hololive VTubers appeared in bit parts in the Japanese dub version of Venom: The Last Dance. This is part of a promotional collaboration between Cover and Sony.

When or if you watch the Japanese dub of Venom: The Last Dance, you might be able to hear the voices of hololive VTubers Shirakami Fubuki, Houshou Marine, La+ Darkness, Akai Haato, and Takane Lui. These five are huge fans of the series and have been promoting the movie for the Japanese audience. While they do appear in the film, they only have bit parts and are extras rather than any of the more prominent characters, who have professional voice actors dubbing them.

Other Venom promotional campaigns from hololive include pictures of the symbiote attaching onto them, a cooking video from Haato, and streams of them watching the films. For the streams, you won’t be able to watch the movie in the stream itself. Like other streams of this genre, you have to watch it on your own device, with the VTubers providing commentary and reactions so it feels like you’re watching it with them.

Venom: The Last Dance is the final installment of Sony’s Venom film franchise. Like the other ones, it stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom. It received middling reviews from critics, but the fans enjoyed it, if Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by.

You can watch Venom: The Last Dance in theaters.

madoka magica walpurgisnahct rising movie

A new trailer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising has come out, with Homura as the star of the show this time. Technically, she always is, but this trailer includes a few more scenes that are from Homura’s point of view.

You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFhiaRoBCZE

There are some new scenes, such as one of Madoka and all of the other versions of her looking down at something. There’s also one of a lizard running into Homura before wings burst out of her back. Yet another new shot is one of Mami wrapping herself up in her ribbons, seemingly while in the midst of battle. As per usual with Madoka Magica, the latest trailer for the movie is a little difficult to comprehend. But surely, when we see them in the theater, it’ll all make sense.

Walpurgisnacht Rising will be the newest movie for the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise, and it’ll canonically take place after Rebellion. Aniplex and SHAFT originally announced the movie back in April 2021 as part of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica 10th anniversary. Though there was radio silence for a few years since that announcement, there have been a lot of trailers and news for the movie in 2024 as we approach its release window.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising will come out in Winter 2025.

house of the dead movie

A Hollywood movie adaptation of Sega arcade classic The House of the Dead is in production. Paul W.S. Anderson, who is the creative behind the Resident Evil series of movies, is working on it as director, producer, and writer.

Fans of horror movies and games (and horror movies based on such games) might be familiar with Anderson’s name already. As mentioned earlier, he’s worked on the Resident Evil movies—the ones starring Milla Jovovich—in major positions. For example, he wrote, directed, and produced Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The only ones he didn’t direct were Apocalypse and Extinction. Other producers who’ll be working on The House of the Dead alongside Anderson are Jeremy Bolt, Toru Nakahara (Sega), Dimitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Dan Jevons. The last three are from Story Kitchen. Timothy I. Stevenson will be the executive producer.

There aren’t any details thus far about the The House of the Dead movie. It’ll have a run time of around 90 minutes, and will focus on the characters trying to escape the titular house. The press release describes Anderson’s vision as one that immerses the audience into the original game’s thrill ride-like experience.

The House of the Dead came out for arcades in 1997, featuring a gun-shaped controller you could pick up and shoot enemies with. In the game, the camera pans through hordes of zombies. Players must kill all of the enemies in the area before it traverses to the next one, and there are boss battles you must clear before you can beat the game. There are different endings depending on how well you do. The last entry in the series was The House of the Dead: Remake, which came out in 2022 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch.

The Hollywood movie adaptation of The House of the Dead is in production.

attack on titan the last attack movie

A teaser trailer for Attack on Titan: The Last Attack is available via the official Pony Canyon YouTube channel. This will be a compilation movie that’ll air in theaters around Japan on November 8, 2024.

You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If0mCZzgAns

It’s quite short at under thirty seconds long. As a note, it does contain spoilers from the final battle of the show. The Last Attack will retell parts 3 and 4 of Attack on Titan: The Final Season. Series director Yuichiro Hayashi said that this is the optimal format to watch the last showdown and conclusion of the show. This is because he originally drew the storyboards of The Final Chapters specials with the intention of having the audience watch it all as a movie.

Attack on Titan ran from 2009 to 2021 in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, and it has been compiled into 34 tankobon volumes. It was a very popular anime series as well, with Wit Studio animating seasons 1-3 and MAPPA taking over from there. With over 140 million copies of the manga in circulation as of November 2023, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack will air in theaters in Japan from November 8, 2024.

my hero academia you're next trailer

Bones has released a new trailer for My Hero Academia The Movie: You’re Next. The title of the trailer is “Who’s Next.” [Thanks, Comic Natalie!]

You can watch the trailer for My Hero Academia: You're Next here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPUmCFgZPPA

It’s almost two minutes long and as of the time of writing, it’s accumulated just over 54,000 views four hours after its debut. In the trailer, we can see the evil All Might (Dark Might), who’s like an obsessed All Might stalker. The new villains that Bones previously showed off also appear in this trailer. It also shows off the three main characters—Izuku, Bakugou, and Todoroki—using their powers in battle. Meanwhile their classmates and other pro heroes like Hawks help evacuate the civilians as the city crumbles around them from a villain attack.

From the looks of the trailer, it seems like there will be some kind of ship tease-like moments between Izuku and movie-original character Anna Scervino. However, it’s unlikely to go anywhere considering Anna is an original character. Meru Nukumi, a model and actress, will voice her. This will be her second voice-acting role in an anime film. Her previous role was herself in Healin’ Good Precure: GoGo! Big Transformation! The Town of Dreams, which aired in Japan in 2021.

My Hero Academia The Movie: You’re Next will air in Japan from August 2, 2024.

super mario bros sequel

Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director of Nintendo, made a Tweet announcing that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie will air in Japan on April 24, 2026. It is working with Illumination’s team in order to make it a good and fun film.

A Nintendo Direct will air on June 18, 2024 from 7:00 AM PT/10:00 AM ET. However, this pieces of news either could not fit in the stream, or Miyamoto wanted to share it beforehand. There’s not much information on the movie at present. During Mario Day on March 10, 2024, Miyamoto and producer Chris Meledandri announced a second Super Mario Bros movie and that it would air on April 3, 2026 in the United States.

The Super Mario Bros Movie came out in 2023 and is based on the Mario franchise. It starts Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. Serving as a prequel of sorts, it focuses on how Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American plumbers, became the Goomba-stomping, Bowser-thwarting, princess-saving duo they are today. The movie had a budget of $100 million but made $1.362 billion at the box office, becoming the second highest grossing film of 2023 (behind Barbie) and the third highest-grossing animated film of all time (behind Frozen II).

A sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie will come out on April 24, 2026.

mononoke movie cast

A new trailer for the Mononoke: Karakasa movie is out, revealing some new male voice actors voicing characters in the cast. The trailer is a lot livelier than the previous one, which focused more on the women inside Ooku. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYJ1mx7601E&t=2s

As a reminder, Sakurai was originally the Medicine Seller in Mononoke. However, due to his adultery scandal, Hiroshi Kamiya replaced him. This is due to the plot of the movie focusing on the plight and struggles of women in Ooku. Considering the circumstances in Sakurai’s personal life and the themes of the film, the studio decided to recast him.

The new cast in the Mononoke: Karakasa movie, as well as their previous roles, are:

  • Hiramoto: Jun Fukuyama (Joker in Persona 5, Lelouch in Code Geass, Lawrence in Spice and Wolf)

mononoke movie cast

A new trailer for the Mononoke: Karakasa movie is out, revealing some new male voice actors voicing characters in the cast. The trailer is a lot livelier than the previous one, which focused more on the women inside Ooku. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

You can watch the trailer here:

  • Mizorogi Hokuto: Kenjiro Tsuda (Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh, Dainsleif in Genshin Impact, Nanami in Jujustu Kaisen)
  • Saburoumaru: Yuki Kaji (Eren in Attack on Titan, Meliodas in The Seven Deadly Sins, and Todoroki in My Hero Academia)

Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle is a fun and satisfying conclusion to the long-running rivalry that exists between the Karasuno and Nekoma teams. However, its heavy focus on Kenma and Nekoma, as well as the structure of the movie, may make it boring for those who have little interest in his character.

Before we start, I’d like to pose a question. How has the movie-going experience been for you since COVID-19? Every movie I watched since then, I've only ever sat next to people who talk or text on their phones. During Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle, the girls on my left whisper-screamed at the slightest provocation or yelled things like “Shut up, you nerd!” when Kuro was giving his pre-match speech. They only settled down after I shushed them for screaming through Yamaguchi's big moment. But the peace didn’t last for long. The group on my roommate’s right kept talking in a foreign language, as well as mimed the movements of the volleyball players. Like, I get cheering during triumphant scenes and laughing at funny ones. But this is a little ridiculous. As a disclaimer though, because of these distractions, I sometimes had a hard time focusing on the movie.

The plot of Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle centers on the Karasuno versus Nekoma match during the Spring Nationals. This is a very important match for both teams, as Karasuno and Nekoma have been rivals for quite some time in-universe. This is a showdown that fans have been waiting years to happen. While the manga version of this match also had a heavy focus on Kenma, Kenma fully takes center stage in the theatrical adaptation. The movie starts with a flashback to his first meeting with Hinata, as well his childhood playing volleyball with Kuro. It also gives more insight on Kenma, showing that while he seems apathetic towards volleyball, he would have given it up if he really didn't like it. During his match against Karasuno, he becomes much more determined and fired up to win, which contrasts with how reserved and lethargic he was in the past.

If you like Nekoma or Kenma, you’re going to have a great time with this movie. It’s really all about Kenma and, by association, Kuro. The movie portrayed Kenma's character development really well. Even as someone neutral on him, I loved it. However, if you like Haikyuu!! for the volleyball or you’re not a Kenma fan, this movie might not be your cup of tea. There were some really exciting moments during the match. But flashbacks felt like they made up the greater chunk of the film. The show strikes that perfect balance between volleyball and reminiscing. However, the movie's more limited run time seems to have worked against it. For reference, in the manga, Karasuno’s game with Nekoma ran from chapters 293 to 324. Meanwhile, Shiratorizawa versus Karasuno was chapters 150 to 187, and that had an entire season’s worth of episodes to adapt it.

haikyuu the dumpster battle nekoma and karasuno

Since the movie is a direct continuation of the show, I highly recommend people to watch or catch up to Haikyuu before this movie. The movie had everything that makes Haikyuu such a standout sports anime. It had the cute and lovable characters, the heart-pounding sports action, the funny gags, and the heartwarming writing. But something about it felt off to me. I left the theater thinking that it didn’t really feel like I watched a Haikyuu match. The rallies are faster, for one. They make the game feel more realistic but might have contributed to the "different" feeling. However, I think part of this issue stems from the way the movie strings rallies together with Kenma’s flashbacks serving as a sort of divider block. If this match was an entire season, much like the Shiratorizawa one was, then it might not have felt disted to me.

All of the standout moments from the movie to me were from the game. Tsukishima's blocks, Yamaguchi's serves, the way Kenma plays Karasuno like a fiddle, Kageyama and Hinata's teamwork, Yaku and Noya's saves... The extra care that the animators could put into all of the expressions and movements for the movie made the volleyball segments shine. There was a particular rally near the end that made me incredibly emotional. While Production I.G. did a great job adapting the lengthy arc to the big screen, I personally thought the flashbacks slowed down the pacing of the film. These flashbacks were not so noticeable in the manga and wouldn't have been so out of place in the show.

The bigger screen also made some of the smear frames very obvious. In my theater, I heard some people laughing during the more dramatic moments, likely because of this. It reminded me a bit of how people condemned the Karna versus Siegfried fight in Fate/Apocrypha. That was due to the different animation styles that A-1 Pictures employs compared to ufotable. But as someone who doesn’t really know much about animation or sakuga, I can’t comment on how Production I.G.’s looked.

Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle was a fun experience for fans of the anime and manga series. But its heavy focus on Kenma might make it a bit boring for people who don’t care much about him. There’s what feels like an entire two minutes of listening to Yuki Kaji (Kenma’s voice actor) ASMR as he breathes into the microphone. However, the scene in question was also a very unique and immersive sequence. Perhaps my more negative opinions about the movie comes from how irritated and distracted I was from the patrons. My roommate, who said she wasn’t bothered by the people around her, said she found the movie perfectly fine. I urge people who want to watch this movie to leave their bad etiquette in the dumpster before going inside.

Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle came out in Japan on February 16, 2024. Crunchyroll distributed the movie internationally from May 30, 2024.

Masahiro Ito Not Involved in Return to Silent Hill Movie

Artist Masahiro Ito, creator of the design for Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2, confirmed that he is not involved in the Return to Silent Hill movie. The artist reiterated on X (formerly Twitter) that he is working in the Silent Hill 2 remake, and shared his enthusiasm for the live-action movie.

In his original Japanese post, Ito said about Pyramid Head that he is honestly happy that the character he created almost a quarter of a century ago is still around. He also recounted an anecdote in which, at the time of sharing the design with the original Team Silent, their response wasn’t good, but the result turned out to be alright in the end.

The posts come as a response to the recent reveal of Pyramid Head’s design in the Return to Silent Hill live-action adaptation. Masahiro Ito also said that he had been told that the Return to Silent Hill movie is based on the plot of Silent Hill 2, so it makes sense for Pyramid Head to appear in the movie, even if the story is altered for the live-action.

The Return to Silent Hill movie was greenlit in October 2022, and Konami released a teaser trailer for the announcement. In it, Director Christophe Gans and Producer Victor Hadida explained that the film would be based on the plot of Silent Hill 2.

Return to Silent Hill started filming in April 2023 and it does not have a release date yet. The Silent Hill 2 remake is in development for PC and PS5, and Konami hasn’t given a release date.

return to silent hill

The newest addition to the Silent Hill film line will be Return to Silent Hill. A preview that came out during the Cannes Film Festival gave film-goers their first look at the new Pyramid Head. [Thanks, Variety!]

Christophe Gans, who worked on the previous 2006 Silent Hill movie, is the director for this one. He co-wrote the script with Sandra Vo-Anh (Beauty and the Beast) and William Jose Schneider (The Crows). Gans and Vo-Anh worked together on the 2014 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which star Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel.

Return to Silent Hill will adapt Silent Hill 2. Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) stars as James and Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) plays Mary. It’s likely that she will also play Maria, the mysterious woman with an uncanny resemblance to Mary whom James encounters in Silent Hill.

Silent Hill 2 is widely considered to be one of the best video games of all time with its psychological horror and usage of symbolism. Since its release in September 2001, it has sold over a million copies. Bloober Team announced a remake in October 2022 and it is still in development.

umamusume movie

Cygames and Toho Movie has announced a movie for Umamusume: Pretty Derby. The title of the movie is Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era, and it’ll come out on May 24, 2024 in Japan.

You can watch the trailer here:

https://twitter.com/uma_musu_movie/status/1771127371971903617

Like the games, the movie seems to focus on the horse girls working hard in order to win their races and beat their rivals. It’ll be kind of like a sports anime, in that sense. Horse girls who will play a major role in the Umamusume: Pretty Derby movie are: Jungle Pocket, Agnes Tachyon, Manhattan Cafe, Dantsu Flame, and TM Opera O.

From the trailer, it seems that the movie will follow Jungle Pocket as the protagonist, who experiences defeat at the hands of Agnes Tachyon. Though Jungle Pocket views Agnes Tachyon as her rival and trains to defeat her, Agnes Tachyon, like in the game, has very little actual interest in racing and doesn’t care about winning. The movie focuses on a group of horse girls separate from the ones who starred in the anime. The anime featured characters like Special Week, Kitasan Black, and Gold Ship.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is readily available for Windows PC and mobile devices, and it’s only in Japanese. Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era will appear in movie theaters in Japan from May 24, 2024.

the boy and the heron interview oscars

During the 96th Oscars Nominee Programs livestream on March 3, 2024, Studio Ghibli Co-Founder Hayao Miyazaki commented on his work for The Boy and the Heron. According to Miyazaki, he was able to finish it because the money kept coming. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

You can watch Miyazaki’s portion of the interview from around the 26:20 mark of the livestream. He’s with Toshio Suzuki, who is a producer, co-founder, and president of Studio Ghibli. He was the producer for The Boy and the Heron as well.

During the interview, they thanked people for nominating their film, and then started discussing it. When Suzuki asked what Miyazaki was most happy about with The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki took a moment to think before saying that he’s glad they finished it. Production took seven years, which was the longest Studio Ghibli ever took making a movie. Miyazaki joked that he thought they could never finish it, but they did because the money never stopped coming in. After sharing a laugh, Suzuki said, “Yay.” He then flashed the peace sign at the camera.

The Boy and the Heron came out in July 2023. Despite sharing a name with a novel in the original Japanese, the story is an original one with autobiographical elements from Miyazaki’s childhood. The movie made over $167 million worldwide.

The Boy and the Heron has finished its theatrical run and Blu-Ray/DVD versions should come out some time in 2024.
