Hobonichi has revealed that it will release the Cup of Lifenoodles from the Earthbound series in the real world. People will be able to actually taste the food used to fully revive unconscious characters in the game series in August 2024.

The Cup of Lifenoodles appeared in Earthbound and Mother 3 as an item that players mainly use to revive fallen characters to full health, though it can also recover any other status ailments. The item's original Japanese name is "Inochi no Udon" (Udon of Life), so Udon will be the noodle type used for this product. Hobonichi will source the noodles from Japan's Gunma prefecture.

Hobonichi has yet to provide more details on the noodles' availability, including its pricing and whether it will be shippable worldwide like the 30th Anniversary concert merchandise. However, its announcement tweet did reveal the package's content. The set will contain two udon noodle packages and a coaster mat.

The real-world version of Cup of Lifenoodles from the Earthbound series will be available in August 2024. The product will be based on the item that appeared in Earthbound and Mother 3. The entire Earthbound series is available to play on Nintendo Switch via its Online subscription, although Mother 3 remains exclusive to Japan due to its lack of localization.

Nintendo revealed in the Japanese February 2024 Nintendo Direct that it is releasing Mother 3 via the Nintendo Switch Online's Game Boy Advance game lineup "today." The trailer starts at the 23:15 mark in the video, and it lasts for approximately one minute.

Mother 3 is the third—and the latest to date—entry in the RPG series that is alternatively known in the West as Earthbound. HAL Laboratory developed the game with Brownie Brown, and Nintendo released it for Game Boy Advance in Japan in April 2006. But while the first two Mother / Earthbound games have received Western localizations, Nintendo has still yet to localize the third entry as of early 2024.

Even though the February 2024 Nintendo Direct was touted as a Partner Showcase edition that focuses on third-party games, Nintendo still showcased the first-party title in the Japanese video. Shortly after publishing the Direct, Nintendo also ed a stand-alone trailer for the Nintendo Switch Online release of Mother 3:

The Game Boy Advance RPG Mother 3 is now available for Nintendo Switch via the Japanese Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The original game is available on the GBA in Japan. There's no word on if we will see it in other regions.

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi spoke about the possibility of an official localization of Mother 3. As part of an interview for a new documentary called EarthBound USA, Itoi stated that he would love for people in the West to play the game, but there were complications with the localization. The EarthBound USA documentary documents the Mother franchise’s cult status in the US. It also touches on the development of the game’s popular fan translation. The documentary team's interview with Itoi marks the first time he has spoken about the desire for Western fans to play an official localization. He remarked that the fan translation was offered to Nintendo, but they turned it down, stating it “wasn’t quite as simple as that.” Despite his interest in seeing a release for Western fans, he has no interest in returning to the project personally as he has moved on.

Itoi’s interview is the latest comment from an official source about the state of any official Mother 3 localization. Producer Shinichi Kameoka, previously told Nintendo Everything that he would love to see it happen. Meanwhile, former head of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, told Bloomberg that Nintendo had little interest in a US version of the game due to the transition to the DS hardware at the time.

While Mother 3 still has no official release outside Japan, its predecessors, EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings, are playable as part of the Nintendo Switch Online library.

Shigesato Itoi will publish a new book containing a compilation of quotes by Mr Saturn from Earthbound and Mother 3 in Japan. Mr. Saturn's Quotes will be available in December 2021 with a price tag of 2,970 yen (~$26). It will contain every line uttered by all characters of the species along with the in-game screenshots.

The book will comprise a large part of the package. Inside the Mr. Saturn-filled cover, the set will also include an embroidered badge, a smaller miniature book, and an additional cover for the tiny book.

Mr. Saturn refers to a species of characters that debuted in Earthbound, the second game in the Mother series. They are well-known for their unique body shapes and speeches. Shigesato Itoi also notably used different fonts for their quotes in both the Japanese and English releases.

Itoi's company Hobonichi had previously published Mother: The Complete Scripts in December 2020. It compiled every line available in all three series titles released to date. It also released a lot of merchandise related to the series, such as hotel keychains and plushes of Mr. Saturn and Master Belch.

Mr. Saturn's Quotes book will be available in Japan on December 21, 2021. Hobonichi's stores will start selling the book one week earlier, on December 14, 2021.

Hobonichi MOTHER Project revealed new anniversary artwork created in collaboration with MOTHER 3 art director Nobuhiro Imagawa. The pixel-graphic images were created to celebrate the 15th anniversary of MOTHER 3's release. Additionally, the Hobonichi MOTHER Project also unveiled two new hand towel designs featuring characters from MOTHER 3.

The artwork was posted via the Hobonichi MOTHER Project Twitter , split into three individual posts. Each illustration was created with the concept of what MOTHER 3 would look like if it was a movie. A total of nine images, along with their respective titles were posted, featuring iconic characters and scenes from the game.

Imagawa himself retweeted the post, stating, "I feel truly blessed that I was involved in MOTHER 3, which is loved by many people even today...I still have many scenes that I would like to draw...☺︎"

One image reimagines the battle screen as if it was filmed in a studio, complete with greenscreens and a hanging Firefly. Another image shows a team of Pigmasks with their helmets off, relaxing in a dressing room behind the scenes. Other notable mentions include a gathering of Save Frogs, and a pleasant barbeque featuring Lucas and his family.

Finally, Hobonichi also announced that it is planning on selling two new MOTHER 3-themed hand towels. The towels will go on sale from June 2021. The hand towels feature pixel art of Lucas, Claus and Boney, as well as Kumatora, Duster, and Salsa. Back in October 2020, Mr. Saturn and Master Belch plushies also released. Hobonichi was also in charge of editing the Ask Iwata book, which was translated into English by Viz Media.

Hobonichi revealed the release date for Mother: The Complete Scripts. The full set of script books from the Mother trilogy will be available publicly in Japanese book stores on December 25, 2020 at a price of 8,888 yen. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Mother: The Complete Scripts will contain every quote and message from all three Mother games, including all variations from dialogue branches and item explanations. It even will include unique quotes from each platform release, as Nintendo released a compilation of the first two Mother games on Game Boy Advance in 2003 in Japan.

Mother: The Complete Scripts will also be available for early purchases and viewing at Hobo Nichiyobi on the 8th floor of Tokyo's Shibuya Parco. The Hobonichi-owned store will hold a temporary Mother Shop from December 14, 2020, to January 11, 2021. Every purchase made of the set at this limited-time shop will come with a bonus Mother sticker book.

Hobonichi also has its own online store that will put the script books up for early sale on December 14, 2020. It also s overseas shipping with FedEx International Priority.

Mother: The Complete Scripts will contain scripts from all three Mother titles released to date. The first game was released in Japan on Famicom (NES) in 1989; it was later localized worldwide as Earthbound Beginnings for the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015. The second one launched for the SNES in Japan in August 1994 and North America—where it was known as Earthbound—in June 1995. Mother 3 launched for Game Boy Advance in April 2006 in Japan, yet it still has not received an official English release so far.

Something interesting is happening in the world of MOTHER (EarthBound). Hold onto your butts, although not so tightly you lose control of your expectations. MOTHER series creator Shigesato Itoi's company has revealed the "Hobonichi MOTHER Project," and the first part of it is a somewhat uncanny book release. It seems like the trilogy's scripts are being published in book form, which seems unusual for video games. But perhaps just as notable is a tease that more MOTHER news is on the way.

The announcement is all in Japanese of course, but luckily the MOTHER community is what it is and has been for years, so you don't need to speak the language to know what's going on. Mato, professional translator and localization guru (and, you know, the guy who did the MOTHER 3 fan translation), clarified what's going on based on what's been provided so far.

The book from Hobonichi (Itoi's company that produces things like stationary and expensive notebooks) is currently slated to release by the end of the year. There's a landing page for the "Hobonichi MOTHER Project," which promises more MOTHER content. You can even sign up for a newsletter that promises to go out almost daily with updates. Regardless of what the news ends up being, MOTHER enthusiasts will want to at least keep that page bookmarked.

The fan-translated version of Mother 3 is receiving a complete rewrite, Earthbound Central revealed today. You may recognize the website as the source of a wealth of Earthbound information, as well as its participation in the fan-translation effort for Mother 3.

“A few months back, we released the translation tools for Mother 3 so that other translators could translate the game into their native language,” site founder Tomato said in a post. “The tools could also allow fans to create script hacks or the like… and almost immediately after the tools were ed, CrabbyRhys began a quest to polish and rewrite the English script!”

You can find more screenshots of the rewrite—which is currently a work-in-progress—over at Earthbound Central. Editor CrabbyRhys says he is also open to from fellow fans regarding the wording of certain things in the English script.
