<< Last week’s software sales chart

<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Japan had several new releases which included two big titles in Pokkén Tournament for Wii U and Digimon World: Next Order for PS Vita, along with several rereleases of games with cheaper prices. Here is Media Create’s weekly sales data for video game software and hardware from the week of March 14 through March 20, 2016.

Starting with the #1 spot that went with The Pokémon Company’s Pokkén Tournament for Wii U at 69,675 units sold in its first week. These numbers aren’t exactly that high for any Pokémon game, but it’s always impressive seeing a Wii U title hit the top spot. On the hardware side of things, Pokkén Tournament has helped the Wii U sell 8,369 units more than last week, making it about a 151% increase.

Following in #2 is Digimon World: Next Order with 64,218 units sold in its first week. The sales number is a little lower than the series’ previous title in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth which sold 76,760 copies in its first week on PS Vita in Japan.

As for the other new titles, most of them consist of “Greatest Hits” versions with Battlefield 4: Edition at #7 with 8,771 units sold, Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) at #11 with 6,931 units moved, Senran KaguraL Estival Versus Sakura Edition at #14 with 6,089 units sold in its first week, and finally, Yakuza 0: Place of Oath (New Price Version) at #20 with 4,257 copies sold in its debuting week.

We also had one more new title that released last week with Design Factory and Otomate’s visual novel Wand of Fortune R, which saw 4,470 copies sold in its first week, placing it at #17 on the list.

It’s also worth noting that The Division is continuing to do rather well with 23,130 units sold in its second week, putting its sales up to 103,833 copies sold in Japan in less than two weeks, which is pretty impressive for any shooter-type game not named Star Wars Battlefront.

On a side note, it’s always interesting to see how well Splatoon and Minecraft tend to stick around, with the two respectively at the #5 and #6 spots for the week. Monster Hunter X and Yo-kai Watch Busters hung around them for a while, but have been slipping towards the bottom of the list as of late.

And with that, the top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

<< Last week’s software sales chart

<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Japan saw another week with several releases in The Division, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Summon Night 6, Medabots: Girls Mission, and La Corda d’Oro 4. Here are Media Create’s video game software and hardware sales data from the week of March 7 through March 13, 2016.

Starting on top of the week is Ubisoft’s new IP, The Division, and it appears to have found success in Japan by placing the #1 similar to the way it has around the world since its launch on March 8.

In second place is The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, which moved 52,282 copies on its debut week. While it might not sound like too much for a Zelda game, they’re better numbers than the previous HD-fied title in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, which saw only 30,264 copies sold in its first week in Japan.

Following up is Summon Night 6: Lost Borders which placed #03 with its PlayStation Vita version after having sold 40,076 units on its debut. Along with its PlayStation 4 counterpart in #06 with 16,750 units sold, the game moved 56,726 copies across both platforms. This is a pretty huge drop from its predecessor in Summon Night 5 on PSP, which sold 105,511 copies on its first week back in 2013, and more than Summon Night 4’s first week sales of 115,701 copies. Perhaps its pitch of returning characters has lost a bit of its charm, not to mention that that was most of what we’ve heard about the game.

While on the subject of doing not-so-great, we have Medabots: Girls Mission at #04 with 20,142 copies sold in its first week.

  • Medabots 7 (2012)—49,519
  • Medabots 8 (2014)—33,326
  • Medabots 9 (2015)—27,702

As you can see, the Medabots series has been on quite a decline the past few years, and Rocket Company made Medabots: Girls Mission in an attempt to entice new fans by making it the series’ first CERO C (ages 15 and up) game. While the numbers aren’t horrible, they’re not good, and the game’s new style failed to make much of an impression, so it looks like it’ll be back to the drawing board for them.

And finally, at #07 we have La Corda d’Oro 4, which saw 15,167 units sold on its first week, keeping its steady numbers from what we’ve seen in past titles of the series, and not bad ones, too, considering that the dating sim is one of Koei’s lower budget series.

On the hardware sales front, there weren’t any noticeable spikes, and each device sold a little less than the previous week. Next week we’ll get to see how Dark Souls III performs in Japan.

The top-20 chart for the week is as follows:

Lw Tw Title Weekly Sales Total Sales Sys. Publisher

Last week, Japan had plenty of new releases with the major one being Gundam Breaker 3, followed by Atelier Shallie Plus, Haikyu!! Cross Team Match! and several other titles. Media Create provides the video game software and hardware sales data from the week of February 29 through March 6, 2016.

The best-selling software of the week goes to Gundam Breaker 3, which saw 74,639 units moved on its first week for PlayStation Vita and another 66,580 units on PlayStation 4 for a total of 141,219 across the two platforms, with both taking the #01 and #02 spots.

As a comparison to previous games from the series, Gundam Breaker 2 sold 123,720 copies (66,532 PS3/57,188 PS Vita) back in December 2014, and the first Gundam Breaker sold 200,564 copies on PS3 on its debut week back in June of 2013. While the third installment didn’t reach the whopping numbers of the very first title, it outsold the second by almost 20k copies, which isn’t too shabby.

Haikyu!! Cross Team Match! managed to take the #03 spot, which isn’t too surprising when you consider the series’ popularity, but those are fairly good numbers for a low-budget and non-action title from Bandai Namco, and also one of the 3DS, but it's still much lower than its previous title, Haikyu!! Tsunage! Itadaki no Keshiki!! (2014) which saw 43,839 copies sold on 3DS for its debut.

The next note-worthy title is Atelier Shallie Plus, the PS Vita version of the PlayStation 3 RPG, at the #04 spot after having sold 19,693 copies in its debut week. Here’s how it stacks against the other Atelier Plus games that were made for PS Vita in recent history:

  • Atelier Totori Plus (2012)—27,651
  • Atelier Meruru Plus (2013)—25,095
  • Atelier Ayesha Plus (2014)—11,663
  • Atelier Escha & Logy Plus (2015)—15,778

As for other new releases last week in Japan, we had Is the Order a Rabbit? Wonderful Party! for PS Vita at #06 with 13,458 copies sold on its first week. Life is Strange debuted on PS4 as well, landing on the #08 spot with 12,111 copies, and Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Nihon Tanjou finished #13 with 7,433 copies.

There was an interesting spike in PlayStation Vita hardware sales of almost 12k more than last week. Perhaps this would have to do with a mix between Gundam Breaker 3 and Atelier Shallie Plus. What’s even more interesting is that the Xbox One got a huge boost going from 60 units sold the week prior to 490 units.

The top-20 chart for the week is as follows:

Lw Tw Title Weekly Sales Total Sales Sys. Publisher
New 01. Gundam Breaker 3 74,639 New PSV Bandai Namco
New 02. Gundam Breaker 3 66,580 New PS4 Bandai Namco

Capcom filed their latest trademark in Europe with Monster Hunter Generation, which could possibly be the English title for Monster Hunter X.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t confirm that the title in question will be Monster Hunter X, but there are plenty of rumors going about hinting at its possibly of it being announced during tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct presentation.

The title “Monster Hunter Generations” would also make sense, as Monster Hunter X will take you through villages of past Monster Hunter games with Kokoto, Pokke, Yukumo, and Beruna.

Last week, Japan had a few new releases with Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis, Mega Man Legacy Collection, TV Anime IdolM@ster: Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 9, Ao no Kanatra no Four Rhythm, and Hero Death. Media Create provides us with the latest sales data of video game software and hardware sales from the week of February 22 through February 28, 2016.

The top-selling software of the week goes to Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis, which took #01, #03, and #04 of this week’s chart after having sold 33,195 for PS4, 22,303 for PS Vita, and 22,280 on PS3 for a total of 77,778 copies across all three platforms.

This would be its third installment from the series, and here’s how it stacks against the previous two:

  • (2013) Kamen Rider: Battride War—128,659 [PS3]

  • (2014) Kamen Rider: Battride War II—69,585 [62,649 PS3/6,936 Wii U]

As you can see, the latest title from the series in Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis didn’t perform nearly as well as the first one, but it managed to do better than its predecessor with numbers even higher than Bandai Namco’s Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4’s from a couple weeks ago.

Other new releases include Mega Man Legacy Collection’s Japanese release, which saw 23,942 copies sold on its debut week to place it at #02. TV Anime IdolM@ster: Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 9 made its debut with 12,792 copies sold, followed by Ao no Kanatra no Four Rhythm at #11. Hero Death released as well, but it only managed to get the #17 spot with 7,018, so I’m sure Nippon Ichi was hoping to see it do a little better than that, even for a remake of a mobile game.

Looking at the list, it’s always interesting to see Splatoon, Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition, and Monster Hunter X manage to stay on the top-20 week after week while other titles eventually make their way out of it after several weeks. Yo-kai Watch Busters, too, but it looks like it’s in danger of finally dropping out of the charts.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Lw Tw Title Weekly Sales Total Sales Sys. Publisher

Last week, Japan had another big release and this time it was from Atlus with Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final, a sequel set in the same world of Shin Megami Tensei IV. Media Create has provided the latest sales data of video game software and hardware for the week of February 8 through February 14, 2016.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final was the best-selling title last week in the #1 spot with 96,349 copies sold for Nintendo 3DS in its debut week. Its predecessor, Shin Megami Tensei IV, sold a whopping 188,562 copies in its first week back in 2013, meaning a good half went on to purchase Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final.

While Final’s numbers aren’t as impressive as Shin Megami Tensei IV’s, keep in mind that those were pretty exceptional numbers as it was Atlus’ second best-selling title in recent history, just 4,000 short of Persona 4 back in 2008. That said, the 96,349 copies sold is pretty good for a non-main-numbered Shin Megami Tensei title.

In #2 this week we have Dragon Quest Builders retaining the position as it did last week with 24,536 copies sold for its PlayStation Vita version. The PS4 version hit #4 with 16,434 units and the PS3 version at #5 with 13,233 copies, totaling for 54,203 copies across the three platforms.

We had another new release with Valkyria Chronicles Remastered on PlayStation 4, which took the #3 spot with 24,156 units sold in its first week. The original game sold 77,267 units on its debut week for PS3, but it’s safe to say that most are holding out for Valkyria: Azure Revolution, which is expected to release later this year.

On the hardware side, it doesn’t look like Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final moved any 3DSes, but it makes sense given that most people who purchased the game already owned the handheld console from the previous title. Meanwhile, the Wii U has seen better days and it’ll likely remain that way until Pokkén Tournament releases next month. The PlayStation 4 and PS Vita continues to perform well with a steady flow of releases for the two.

The giant inflatable Raizex and life-size blademaster armor replicas may have stolen the show floor of Monster Hunter Festa this year in Osaka, but Capcom put together something even more special for fans: a Treasure Hunt.

Now, now, I know – when you hear that you probably think they had us walk around the show floor hunting for some arbitrary thing like, say, stamps (don’t worry, they did that too), but the game promised a test of wit and Monster Hunter knowledge, and it delivered.

TreasureHuntSteps_ENG

First, let’s talk about our supplies. The makeshift caravan provided you with a number of materials necessary to partake in the series of quests:

A) A map of Hunter Island, in which many secrets are hidden.

B) The Quest Riddles (Location and Item), coded instructions on where to go and what item to bring.

C) Toolkit – stickers to help decode the secrets of the map.

D) A folder depicting one of the four flagship monsters from Monster Hunter X, with a hidden purpose…perhaps an ancient decoding tool?

E) Item Cards, gathered directly from the game.

F) Your Quest Report, which you will file with the Guildmarm after discovering the location and item necessary to move to the next quest.

With that, we left the gates of our humble convention hall (read: took a seat at some benches) and went to work, beginning at low-rank with Quest 1.

Quest1

Solving the riddle on the left will reveal the location of your next Quest. Solving the riddle on the right will tell you which item you need to bring. The location riddle reads, “When four lightning bolts strike the island, your path will become clear.” The item riddle simply reads “Jump over one.” A cursory glance at the Hunter’s Island map showed 7 clouds, but our toolkit only had four to place as we pleased. The item riddle had nothing but 11 Japanese characters to choose from. The solution?

Quest1Solution

Four of the seven clouds had a particular concave pattern that matched the convex patterns on the top of the lightning bolts. Fitting them into the clouds, each bolt struck one Katakana character, a jumble of words which when unscrambled, gave us ミツリン、pointing us to the Kechou-mitsurin(怪鳥の密林)、or Yian Kut-Ku’s Forest. The letter puzzle was simple –use every other letter (jump over one) to reveal the item name: Otobakudan(音爆弾)、Sonic Bomb. Filing the location name and item into our report, we handed our report to the Guildmarm, received Shock Trap and Spider Web item cards, and were given the okay to move on to Quest 2.

Quest2

Again, we have a location riddle on the left and an item riddle on the right. The location riddle reads “Make the right facing statue hold the red bow, and the left-facing statue hold the blue one. Where their arrows meet, you must go.” The item riddle was another character jumble, telling us to “submerge the tablet under water, and read the rising bubbles.” Stumped? Here’s the solution.

Quest2Solution

Placing the red and blue bows in their respective statue’s hands shows that their arrows cross over the Sleepy Forest(眠りの森)、which calls itself the home of Monster Hunter X’s new Owl monster. That does it for the location – and the item? While we considered putting the map in our water bottle, we found a more sound solution on our Toolkit – a tank of water, which when placed over the tablet, reveals five letters –しびれわな (Shi-bi-re-wa-na) - or Shock Trap. We again filed our report with the Guildmarm, received Flashbug and Bitterbug item cards, and were approved for Quest 3.

Quest3

Here’s where they start to bend logic a little, literally. The location clue reads, “When front and back become one and two boats set sail, the numbers will tell you where to go.” …well, that’s a bit more difficult, isn’t it? The item clue is no less vague: “Tether the giant monsters with a rope, and read the stars on this map in the order of colors it reveals.” The wordplay in this one made the task a bunch of fun, and requires some Monster Hunter and Japanese know-how to complete. So let’s take a look at the solution!

Quest3Solution

First and foremost – “when front and back become one” – the Hunter’s Island map has two sides, both of equal importance. The answer was to fold the map so that the sails on the front stand on the boats drawn on the back. Doing so also reveals a series of numbers pointing to Japanese characters which, when read in order, readリオレウスノスマチ, or Rathalos’ Nest.

The item section was a bit trickier – while there are a number of large monsters on the map (Rathalos, Yian Kut-Ku, Hororo-Holulu, Dinovoldo), there are only two that hold the classification of Giant Monster – and that’s Gamut. Tethering the two Gamuts together reveals the first character in a list of colors: Black, Peach, Green, White, and Burnt Orange (in that order, ロ、モ、ドリ、ロ、イダイ). Reading the stars in that order produced 「ひかるたま」or Flash Bomb.

We had no Flash Bomb item card…BUT! We did have a Bomb Casing and a Flashbug! With the location in and item now in hand, we drew up our report and submitted it to the Guildmarms. Getting a Wyvern Tear and Goldfish Bait in return, we got permission to move to Quest 4.

Quest4

Like any proper Monster Hunter game, Quest 4 implores you to use methods established in Quest 3, bringing us to our location riddle: “Go to the place revealed by the four wyverns breathing flame.” Next, the item hint: “Touch Grass and Flower, and Shield and Heart. When pinned to the four crosses, read the message as you would a clock.” With flames and wyverns on front and back, it seemed more map folding was on the horizon – not just for the location, but for the items as well. Here’s the solution.

Quest4ItemSolution

To make the wyverns breathe flames, you have to fold the map four times – in a very specific order. First the red wyvern, then blue, then yellow, and finally the black wyvern. Doing so will isolate single part of the map – the Howling Sands (or Tigrex’s Desert, depending on 轟の砂漠).

Next, unfolding the map again and turning it over, one will see a shield, a heart, a flower, and grass. Folding the map so that the shield touches the heart, and the flower touches the grass, and then putting that into the decoder (the flagship monster folder) so that the bars on each corner of the map the bars on the folder to make crosses, revealed the item name when read in clockwise order : 「シビレナマニク」, or Tinged Meat.

We didn’t have tinged meat, BUT…! We did have a Raw Meat item card and Paralysis Mushroom! Combining the two in the game created Tinged Meat, and so it would so the same for us here. Brining our fourth quest to the Guildmarm, We received our final challenge of the day – and no new items.

The final challenge of the day was the Treasure Hunt’s most creative. It reads, “Change fire to water, and when you complete this task, go to meet the monster that appears. Search for clues around him.” The task also literally says: “For this task, you must actually leave the Treasure Hunt corner and search for clues.”

We needed to know what we were looking for first. Here was the solution.

Quest5Solution

“Change fire to water,” well, the only fire we’ve dealt with is of the wyvern variety – and that’s where our answer lay. Folding the map once more so that the black and blue dragons breath water on the front, and the red and blue dragons breath water on the back, the monster we were supposed to hunt was revealed: Raizex.

IMG_1104

Raizex! We had to hunt for clues around giant inflatable Raizex in the middle of the show floor. Frantically leaving our post to find clues before the convention closed, we left the treasure corner – and learned of a secret item combination: among the leftover cards in our inventory, we had to combine Large Earth Crystal, Auristone Chunk, and Spider Web. Bringing the combination back to the Guildmarm, our quest was done for the day, and we got to take a photo with the Berna Village Chef and “QUEST COMPLETE” logo.

questclear

Oh, did you think the fifth “Challenge Quest” was the final piece of the puzzle? Ohoho, WRONG! After finishing the fifth challenge, we were given a new item card, a “Hunter’s Seal (狩人の紋章),” and told that the final puzzle would be released on February 22, 2016.

It seems there are still some mysteries hidden in that old map, and a whole sheet of tools to solve them. Here’s to hoping this riddle doesn’t end like Ralphie’s tragic Little Orphan Annie message A Christmas Story. Given the focus on Raizex and a lack of a Variant in the game, my high hopes is that Raizex is next in line to get a Variant, and that this is a Raizex Variant DLC quest…but that is nothing but a Monster Hunter fan’s desperate speculation.

Last week, Japan saw a major release from Bandai Namco with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 for PlayStation 4. Media Create has provided the latest update on video game software and hardware sales data for the week of February 1st through February 7th, 2016.

First things first, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 took the top spot of the week after having sold 64,446 copies on PlayStation 4. Here’s a look at how the fourth installment from the series compares to the previous titles and their opening week sales numbers:

  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3—87,661 (2013)

  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2—66,675 (2010)

  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm—44,000 (2008)

As you can see from the above comparisons, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 fell short by over 23,000 units from its predecessor. While there are probably several reasons as to how that happened, the two main points that come to mind are that Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 released when the PlayStation 3 was still at the top of its game in Japan while Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 released in a time when the PS4 barely began to pick up in Japan.

It’s also worth noting that Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 released in Japan when the manga series was entering its climax, and the level of hype was pretty high. Meanwhile, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 released well over a year after the manga’s original end has concluded. Nonetheless, the series remains popular enough in Japan, and this may be the end of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Naruto come back in a different title.

In 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place we have Dragon Quest Builders respectively on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 for a combined total sales figure of 98,326 units, which is pretty impressive for a second week when we see most titles drop significantly in sales numbers. In a less positive note, the Wii U sales number dropped by a whopping 5,000 units from last week. This can be attributed to the fact that there hasn't been any new Wii U releases, nor any major titles in the horizon.

The only other new title that we saw last week in Japan was the PS Vita otome game Sengoku Koi Senki: Omoide Gaeshi CS Edition by Prototype, which sold 4,359 on its opening week.

On a final note, I thought it was pretty interesting that last week we saw Splatoon, Yo-kai Watch Busters, and Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition drop out of the top-10, and it looked like they were going to quietly keep dropping over time, but you can see that they’re back on the list at #07, #08, and #09.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

Last week, Japan saw one of their biggest releases of the year with Dragon Quest Builders for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. Media Create has provided the latest update on sales data of video game software and hardware for the week of January 25th through January 31st, 2016.

Dragon Quest Builders released in Japan on January 28, and it sold a total of 372,539 copies in Japan for PlayStation Vita (178,016 copies,) PlayStation 4 (141,369 copies,) and PlayStation 3 (53,154 copes). It isn’t rare for any game with the Dragon Quest title attached to it to do well in Japan, but the top-selling platform for the title is PlayStation Vita, and it’s safe to assume that the success and likeness of Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition in Japan drove some of its sales.

It’s also interesting to see that PlayStation 4 sales were up by 8,116 units and the PlayStation Vita’s sales were impressively higher by 30,115 units compared to the week prior, and we can also assume that it’s largely due to the release of Dragon Quest’s block-make RPG.

While Dragon Quest Builders took 1st, 2nd, and 4th place with PS Vita, PS4, and PS3 respectively, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash snuck in to take the 3rd spot with 55,331 copies sold in its opening week. The previous entry in the series, Mario Tennis Open, saw 101,645 copies sold in its debut week, but the game was released for the more popular 3DS system, so 55,331 units for a Wii U title on its first week isn’t bad at all, but pretty normal for a Super Mario title, which tend to do pretty well in Japan.

Dragon Quest Builders was definitely the highlight of the week, but there were several other releases. Uta no ☆ Prince-Sama: Music 3 sold through 51,289 copies on its debut week, shy of Music 2 which sold 68,415 copies on PSP back in 2013. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 sold 35,532 copies across PlayStation 4 (20,101 units) and PlayStation 3 (15,431,) much more than Romance of the Three Kingdoms 12 did for PS3 back in 2012 with 17,013 units sold in its first week.

TV Anime IdolM@ster: Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 8 was another new release, and saw 15,720 copies sold on PS3. And finally, The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water made its debut on PlayStation Vita and sold through 12,436 copies last week.

<< How to read and understand sales

maxresdefault

Last week, sales in Japan continued with the trend from the week prior of having some interesting releases that certainly mixed up the top-20 software sales from top to bottom. Media Create provides us with sales data of video game software and hardware for the week of January 18th through January 24th, 2016.

One of the key releases this week in Japan is Yakuza Kiwami from Sega, their “ultimate” remake of the very first Yakuza game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Both versions took the top two spots, with 103,256 units sold for PS4 and 60,427 units for PS3, combining for a total of 163,683 units across both platforms.

Here’s a look at how the previous Yakuza games have performed in sales during their debuting weeks:

  • (2010) Yakuza 4 – 383,972
  • (2011) Yakuza: Dead Souls – 307,019
  • (2012) Yakuza 5 – 356,757
  • (2014) Yakuza Restoration – 220,698
  • (2015) Yakuza Zero – 236,329

As you can see, Yakuza Kiwami’s sales are much lower than they have been compared to the previous two releases, but it can be argued that Yakuza Kiwami is a remake and also the second title in less than a year for the series after Yakuza Zero’s release in March 2015. It's also worth noting that the original game has had two HD remasters, with one on PlayStation 3 (2012) and the other on Wii U (2013).

Nonetheless, 163,683 isn’t exactly a bad number of sales, it’s actually pretty good during this time of year when sales are slow, so it comes to show that this retired Yakuza still knows how to collect money. But it’s probably a good thing that Sega will release Yakuza 6 this year, as the next title in the main-numbered series for the game is probably what fans have been waiting for in Japan.

Next on the list is Hyrule Warriors Legends at the #3 spot, which sold 54,429 units in its debut week. Hyrule Warriors for Wii U sold 60,090 copies in its first week, but the 3DS version’s total sales aren’t exactly a homerun when you look at past The Legend of Zelda games on 3DS. It’s safe to assume that it’s because it’s not a regular game from the series, and it’s also a 3DS port of a title that’s been out for over a year. It should also be noted that the game itself isn’t like the other Musou/Warriors spin-offs that are based on popular franchises with much larger fan bases in Japan.

As far as other new releases go, at #4 we have Just Cause 3 in 4th place with 33,660 units sold in its first week. Meanwhile, Capcom had a couple new releases in Japan with Resident Evil Origins Collection for PlayStation 4 in the #5 spot with 21,015 units sold, and Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster for PlayStation 3 at #7 with 15,639 copies sold in its first week. And finally, 5pb. released Muv-Luv Double Pack for PS Vita, which sold 4,366 copies on its debut.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

Last week in Japan, sales started getting much more interesting compared to the relatively quiet week of no new releases from the week prior. Media Create provides us with sales data of video game hardware and software for the week of January 11 through January 17, 2016.

The first thing that stands out right away after a quick glance at the top-20 sales chart is how different the placements are for this week. While things looked almost identical in placement for the previous two weeks, this week doesn’t have a single title that was in the same place last week.

Strange as it may seem, Monster Hunter X isn’t in the top place for the first time in weeks since Monster Strike released, and it’s not even in #2. What is this sorcery? To answer the question—Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, which released in Japan on January 14, 2016.

Atlus’ port/HD remake of the PS2 classic action RPG appears to have sold quite well in its debut week, having sold 43,394 units on PlayStation Vita, 42,263 units on PlayStation 4, and 9,771 units on PlayStation 3 for a total of 95,428 copies across all three platforms.

For those of you wondering, the original Odin Sphere released in Japan in May of 2007, and it saw 59,248 copies sold in its first week. Atlus hit a bump on the road with Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem to close off 2015, but they’re already seeing a pretty strong start of 2016 thanks to the return of Odin Sphere, and they still have Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final releasing three weeks from today.

If you’re wondering about Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours published by Kadokawa on the bottom of the list at 3,675 copies sold in its first week, but that’s nothing too new for a shmup, as they generally tend to sell to a much smaller audience. The game released last month in the west on PC and late-November for PS4 and Vita.

We should also mention that Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Stride to Victory!! is one of the more surprising new entries in the list, with a #4 position in the top-20 of the week, after having sold 20,992 units to top Monster Strike. It may not be as successful as the previous title in Lock On Victory!! which sold 33,380 copies when it released in 2014, but for a non-major title from FuRyu to crack the 20k mark during a time of low sales, it’s still impressive, nonetheless.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

Last week in Japan saw a relatively quiet week of sales, which is normal for this time of year at the second week after the holiday season, where video game sales plummet. Media Create has updated with a look at software and hardware sales for the week of January 4 through January 10, 2016.

Continuing on from last week, Japan didn’t have any new video game releases, and most of the titles from the top-20 sellers of the week didn’t actually change positions that much.

Monster Hunter X still leads the list, even though it sold less than half of what it did last week with 65,227 units sold, and to put it into perspective, these numbers would’ve barely cracked the top-10 during the busiest week last month. Nonetheless, it has a lead on Monster Strike at #2 (38,795 units) by quite a margin, followed by Splatoon at #3 (29,945 units).

Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition was selling less than 10k a week in the month of November and has picked up considerably since December, when it saw 62,356 units sold at its peak during the last week of the month. Since then, it has continued to do pretty well, sticking in the top-10 of the list for about a month now.

With 607,878 units of total sales for Minecraft on PS Vita, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of effect it’ll bring to Dragon Quest Builders when it releases on January 28 in Japan. We can also look forward to seeing how well Yakuza Kiwami sells when it releases the week before on January 21, 2016.

Monster Hunter X is getting some more collaborations soon, including one for Mega Man and another with Square Enix. The official website shows us more from what was announced at Monster Hunter Festa 2016.

The Mega Man collaboration features an event called “The Yellow Demon,” similar to the one we saw for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. It features the “Rock Hammer” weapon and “Rocknyan” series of armor for your Palico. The content will be available on February 25, which is also the day Mega Man Legacy Collection releases in Japan.

Here’s a look at a trailer showcasing the collaboration:

Next up is one for Square Enix:

The Square Enix collaboration will be available earlier on January 15, where players will get to take on the event quest named “Illusionary Tale: The Vanguard’s Steel of Malice” to fight Kushala Daora in order to get some Palico gear with the “Nyaight Sword” and “Nyaight” series Palico armor. It’ll also feature the “Bahamut” Palico.

Monster Hunter X is currently available in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.
