With the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, it is now time to take a look at the entire beloved and highly successful Capcom series as a whole. The crux of this franchise is hunting down various beasts. But what is the best monster in the entire Monster Hunter series to date? The Siliconera staff has come together to give our thoughts on our favorite enemies from across all titles.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Our Favorite Monster Hunter Enemies c4t33

I like the funny little round fellas like the Gobul from 3 and the Nibelsnarf from 3p. They're both threatening, but also kind of adorable and have silly names. I'm also a big fan of the Seltas Queen and hope she gets to have a comeback in the series sometime, as both the monster and armor design for it were great. -- Elliot

I think Paolumu is absolutely adorable. Definitely a top-tier, super cute character. Totally one of my favorites, both to fight and befriend in Monster Hunter Stories. However, I also like Khezu a whole bunch since it is so, so silly. -- Jenni

The Nargacuga will always be my personal favorite. It has a fantastic design that is reminiscent of a dark wyvern mixed with an almost bat-style design. It is fast and incredibly memorable. I am also extra partial to it since it was one of my trusty partners in the wonderful but criminally underplayed Monster Hunter Stories 2.

Speaking of Monster Hunter Stories 2, I appreciate how that particular title flipped the script on the whole monster-hunting situation. Being able to collect, hatch, and fight alongside the monsters we previously hunted brought more nuance and depth to them. It also allowed me to care more about the monsters, rather than just see them as a foe standing in my way. As such, I’m still holding out hope for a Monster Hunter Stories 3 in the near future so I can fight alongside my bestie Nargacuga again. -- Cody

Monster Hunter Wilds releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 28, 2025.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 best monsties

Listen, there’s no excuse for not having played Monster Hunter Stories or Monster Hunter Stories 2 and caught Monsties now, as Capcom basically released the best version of one game everywhere and the sequel went multiplatform. These are refreshing takes on the Monster Hunter and Pokemon formula. They’re worth playing. (Especially if you have Apple Arcade and free access to the original via the subscription.) So in case you are just getting started, here are our recommendations for Monsties to check out.

There is a correct answer to this question and it IS the Great Poogie. Runners up include my chubby shark friend Zamtrios and the Good Old Rathian.  I hope they add a Seltas Queen you can tame one day too, I love that design. — Elliot

I really love Nargacuga, because it's just one of the cutest, strongest, and most intimidating Monsties in the Monster Hunter Stories games. However, I also kept Paolumu along as a friend for the longest time. It's so fluffy, puffy, and cute! But really, the execution is such that any monster you invest in can end up being viable for so long, which helps keep both entries in this new series engaging. I just hope that, if a third game appears, even more monsters get a chance to become our buddies. (They are friend-shaped sometimes, after all!) — Jenni

Interview: Preparing Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 for New Platforms

It’s a big year for Monster Hunter as a series, as we’ve not only started to see more Monster Hunter Wilds news, but both Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2 are heading to more platforms. To learn more about the latest remaster and port, Siliconera got a chance to talk with Producer Yoshihiro Akira and Art Director Takahiro Kawano about the games getting a new chance at fresh audiences.

Jenni Lada: Monster Hunter Stories is about eight years old now. What sorts of challenges did that pose when preparing it for the Switch, PS4, and PC?

Yoshihiro Akira: Because Monster Hunter Stories was an older title, it took a lot of effort to bring it to current platforms. Programmers had to decipher the source code to develop the game. The biggest problem we faced was the interface. The Nintendo 3DS version had two screens, including a touch screen, and even the mobile version was designed for touch controls. We have rebuilt the controls based on the interface of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin so that Monster Hunter Stories can be played comfortably on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

In addition, in order to allow players who have played the game in the past to enjoy it again, we created a fully voiced version of the game to deepen immersion in the scenario, which was well received, and a Museum mode containing design artwork to help s fall in love with the series even more.

Image via Capcom

It was already confirmed that Title Update 1.20 and 1.30 will be included in the Monster Hunter Stories Switch, PS4, and PC versions. Will any other quality of life features inspired by the sequel appear in the game?

Akira: The interface was rebuilt based on the controls of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. In addition, we have incorporated features to make it easier to play based on our experience with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, such as gathering materials while riding your monstie and the Quick Heal.

How deep into the archives did you go to prepare its Museum Mode, and which piece of insight into its development are you most excited to have preserved for people to see?

Akira: Fortunately, the archives were well organized and preserved at the time, so it made things a lot easier. If you visit the Museum after playing the story, you will have a better understanding of the character design ideas that sadly did not make it into the game and the images that were created to design the maps, allowing s to enjoy the Museum mode even more.

In particular, the map images will give you a better understanding of the many wonderful designs that were used to create the world of Monster Hunter Stories. Please also take a look at the comments made by the staff at that time!

How will the amiibo-exclusive monsters be handled for the Monster Hunter Stories remaster, given the amiibo for the 3DS game never appeared outside Japan?

Akira: The amiibo functions will be carried over as is. The Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin amiibo can also be used to acquire content. What you can get though....you will have to wait and see!

Likewise, how will the Monster Hunter Stories 2 amiibo bonuses be handled on the PS4?

Akira: It is not possible to obtain this with the PlayStation 4 version.

Image via Capcom

Which monster design for Monster Hunter Stories and its sequel are you most proud of? Likewise, which Monstie do you wish you could have included in the series?

Takahiro Kawano: The Monster Hunter Stories series features monsters from the Monster Hunter franchise, and while we rarely design new monsters, we did create original monsters for the final bosses of both games. I can't go into detail about this due to spoilers, but please check them out for yourself! A monster I’d like to introduce to the series would be a very large monster like Lao-Shan Lung. It would be difficult to incorporate it into an RPG style game, but I’m sure it would be fun if we could make it happen.

What would you like to potentially do in, say, a Monster Hunter Stories 3 if given the chance to make it?

Akira: I think the core being a Monster Hunter title that is easy to play for those who are not good at action games and those who like turn-based RPGs will remain the same. It would be nice to be able to evolve the series in such a way that we can keep the strong elements and change things that need to be changed.

The Monster Hunter Stories remaster will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC on June 14, 2024. It is also available on the 3DS and mobile devices. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin releases on the PS4 on June 14, 2024, and it is available now on the Switch and PC.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin was one of my favorite games for 2021 on Nintendo Switch, and I certainly consider it one of the most underrated JRPGs from this decade. The game is finally coming to PlayStation consoles with a long-awaited PS4 port. Three years later, it still feels good after spending a little time with this release.

It turns out, Monster Hunter Stories 2 works just as well on PS4 as it did back on the Nintendo Switch. Based on my early experience, it honestly may be even better. I never played this game on the PC, so I didn’t get to benefit from the performance and visual improvements there. Trying the port via my PS5 involved seeing some noticeable differences.

For one, the resolution is sharper. Monster Hunter Stories 2 looks better on a TV now than it did when I first played it in TV mode on the Switch. In addition, the performance in the game ensures its frame rate was pretty solid during my time testing this version. I used this opportunity to run through the first few opening hours I was quite familiar with already. The game wastes no time kicking off with a bombastic opening, before slowing down for a relaxing island life vibe as your player character — a Monster Rider rather than Hunter like the core series — sets out to learn the ropes.

The initial area of Hakolo Island instantly looked so much better in this version. The coastline looked stunning, while my custom character and the monsters didn’t look fuzzy or anything like I on Switch. The almost cel-shaded look of this JRPG looks so stunning when played with backwards compatibility on PS5.

Image via Capcom

Right off the bat, anyone who plays the core Monster Hunter games should know this is quite a different experience. And this is to its benefit. Monster Hunter Stories 2 on PS4 is more akin to the Pokemon titles. Players go around the world to various regions and collect eggs of various iconic monsters like the Rathalos. You then hatch these eggs to use monsters as your partners in battles. The battles themselves take place with a strict triangular elemental system.

This system boils down to the red attacks beating the green ones who beat the blue ones and so on. However, there is so much more to this system than meets the eye. For instance, you can find separately from your current monster partner at any time. This makes for a nice double battle type of situation. However, you can also hop on the back of your pal and team up together. This provides more powerful moves but at the cost of having your hearts shared together. It is a neat and surprisingly deep system, which leaves room for experimentation. After all, you are even able to have your Rider switch through the weapon types a la the core series during battle as well.

Image via Capcom

All of these different concepts can make the battles long and arduous, which mainline fans may be familiar with. There is immense challenge here to be found for those who desire it. For me, though, I just appreciate the idea of a high-quality, high-budget Pokemon-like game on PlayStation.

There just aren’t enough of these types of monster-collecting games of this caliber on the PlayStation. At least, outside of indie titles and some Digimon games. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is one of the finest examples of this engrossing concept and it reeled me in faster than any of the core series titles ever did when it first came out, and the PS4 release seems poised to do the same. If the first few hours of hatching eggs and completing side quests are anything to go by, this gorgeous and smoother port on PlayStation will likely reel me in once again.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin releases on the PS4 on June 14, 2024.

Siliconera PC Game of the Year 2021

Of all the platforms, PC is definitely the hardest to award. After all, it’s full of early access and expansions and older titles holding onto mindshare well beyond their release years. But there are still special games that break through the noise and demand your attention! Here are our PC Game of the Year 2021 finalists.

These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. For more of the year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2021 archive.

pc game of the year 2021 unpacking

Winner: Unpacking b4w4x

Unpacking presents a fascinating way to learn about someone's life without ever seeing them. And making compelling gameplay out of something most of us don't love doing in real life? That's truly an accomplishment. It's intimate. It's very chill. And there's really nothing else like it. Congratulations to Unpacking, our PC Game of the Year 2021!

valheim

Valheim 5q3r1a

Valheim shows the value of an engaging gameplay loop. Is it the best-looking game? Nah. But its tightly-crafted action (and hey, also farming) captures you and doesn't let go. It's a gem in the increasingly-crowded survival game genre, and its developers look to be adding more and more to the game for years to come.

monster hunter stories 2

Monster Hunter Stories 2 236c31

There's just something so delightful about Monster Hunter Stories 2. There's a whole multiplayer component and a post-game grind to build the best monsties, but even without all that? It's just a fun campaign to play through. It's bright, it's friendly, and it's always tempting to grab every last egg.

What are your PC Game of the Year 2021 selections? Let us know in the comments! And stay tuned for more of Siliconera’s GotY 2021 awards.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is the second entry in the Monster Hunter Stories series. Unlike traditional Monster Hunter titles, the Stories series focuses on befriending monsters and features turn-based combat. Players need to utilize the various types of monsters, or Monsties, they can obtain to find advantages in battles.

Several changes have appeared with this new installment, however. The behavior of monsters are no longer random. Instead, monsters now have specific behaviors, which makes it easier for players to counter enemy attacks. This feature was updated due to player complaints.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Multiplayer Unlock

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin features two multiplayer modes. Players can access a co-op and player versus player modes in the title, which opens up a breadth of possibilities. However, accessing these modes requires the player to progress the story to a certain point. This guide will outline how to unlock and access both of them.

Please keep in mind that this guide does contain spoilers, as players will need to advance the story in order to access these features. 2k2g1l

In order to access the multiplayer mode options, players will need to advance to the second area in Monster Hunter Stories 2. How much a player wants to grind will affect how quickly this mode is unlocked. When unlocking the Alcala Region players, will need to progress to a specific quest which involves defeating a Nargacuga. Once this mission has been completed, players will gain access to the multiplayer modes. Both the co-op and player versus player will be available at that point.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Multiplayer Unlock

Keep in mind that you do not need to win against the Nargacuga to unlock this mode. Players simply need to have engaged in combat with the monster during the specific mission. Once the requirements have been met, a tutorial will pop up explaining how to access this function. However, players can simply go to the Quest Board in any town to play online.

Additionally, the co-op mode is strictly limited to two players. In this mode, players can take on monsters together and collect Monstie eggs. The player versus player mode will allow for four players to engage in combat.

However, there is currently no indication that cross-platform play is available or will be made available in the future.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is immediately available for Nintendo Switch and PC. You can read our review here.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Best Monsties Ranmar Velocidrome

In Monster Hunter Stories 2, you’re going to come across a lot of potential Monsties and “best” is a subjective term. However, due to things like their general attack “type” and field skills, there are some that are more helpful than others early own the game. These are ones who, as long as you have them in the party, you’ll be able to reach new places and do more things. Yes, eventually they will all be outclassed. (Likely by the midway point, if you don’t do a lot of Rite of Channeling ceremonies for new genes.) But when you first start your adventure, they’ll be great.

Velocidromes the Best Jumpers 5u5c34

Acquisition Method: Kayna gives you Ranmar after the tutorial. They’re also found in blue and orange spotted eggs. These eggs are common.
Area Found: Hakolo Island
Field Skill(s): Jump
Type: Speed
Why it’s great: You will do a lot of jumping in Monster Hunter Stories 2 and, while many Bird Wyverns like Velocidrome will have the field skill, there’s something about keeping the first on elf your Monsties around for a while that’s the best.

Best Monster Hunter Stories 2 Monsties Zamtrios

Zamtrios is Your Baby Shark 22x45

Acquisition Method: Eggs with thin, vertical, staggered lines. They are everywhere and quite common.
Area Found: Loloska
Field Skill(s): Swim and Monster Search
Type: Technical
Why it’s great: Okay, so Zamtrios isn’t going to be the first of the best Monsties for swimming in Monster Hunter Stories 2. That’ll be a Royal Ludroth from the Alcala area. But you won’t really need one that can swim until you hit Loloska. And Zamtrios is great for that because it is incredibly strong and has two helpful Field Skills instead of one. You can also use it to find monsters on maps, which is handy for quests.

Nargacugas are Stealthy 3r3w2d

Acquisition Method: You’ll have a chance to get an egg for one immediately after a story mission. Its eggs have a pink striped tiger pattern on them. They’re rare.
Area Found: Alcala
Field Skill(s): Stealth
Type: Speed
Why it’s great: Sometimes, you’re going to want to only get eggs, gather, or look for dens. You won’t want to get into battles. Nargacuga is the first Monstie you’ll encounter with Stealth, which is invaluable.

Kecha Wacha is All Ears 656o5d

Acquisition Method: Eggs, in particular the ones with sort of a spiked clump pattern on them.
Area Found: Loloska
Field Skill(s): Bug Search and Ivy Climb
Type: Technical
Why it’s great: Up until you hit Loloska, you’re going to see so many ivy patches you can climb, but won’t have any Monsties that can climb them. Kecha Wacha will likely be the first Monstie you get that can climb. (Right around the same time as both Nerscylla and Congalala, to be honest.) But Kecha Wacha is handy because you can also mark bugs on the map, and bugs are one of the most difficult gathering items to “spot” while exploring.

Best Monster Hunter Stories 2 Monsties Basarios

Basarios 6m73e

Acquisition Method: You’ll want a beige egg with brown tiger stripes. I’ve also only found them in Rare Dens.
Area Found: Alcala
Field Skill(s): Ground Dive and Ore & Bone Search
Type: Technical
Why it’s great: Basarios is one of those Monsties where you’ll probably find it right about when you encounter your first Ground Dive spots. And having the ore marking ability is handy too. It also has incredible defenses. The thing is, this is one that is incredibly difficult to find and Paintballs don’t seem effective to get it to retreat so you can get an egg. So keep an eye out for gold dens! And also, keep in mind that when you hit Lamure, you’ll definitely be upgrading to a Diablos that knows Ground Dive and Roar.

Lagombi 1a2v64

Acquisition Method: You’ll only find them in eggs. They’ll be white with pointed splotches on them.
Area Found: Loloska
Field Skill(s): Dash and Rock Breaker
Type: Speed
Why it’s great: When you’re in the overworld, you’ll have a lot of ground to cover! In Monster Hunter Stories 2, you won’t come across rocks to break terribly often. So until you find a Lagombi, a Bulldrome with Dash from Hakolo Island is fine, if you want to cover ground quickly. But once you do reach Loloska, you should get a Lagombi and use it to swiftly get around and deal with the rocks you’ll find in the area blocking treasure.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
