Best 3D Turn-based JRPGs on Switch

The Switch is well-known for its excellent selection of JRPGs, and traditionally these feature turn-based combat. However, in recent years, favor has turned to action RPGs and turn-based games have been pushed to the side; even Pokémon’s next game has real-time combat. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t excellent 3D turn-based JRPGs. On the contrary there are many excellent games on the Switch from the genre. Here are our 10 favorite 3D turn-based JRPGs available on Nintendo Switch.

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk 1k91f

As we excitedly wait for the next entry in the series, Atelier Yumia, we had to add one of these games to the list. While the more recent entries in the Atelier series are all action combat, the series is best known for its turn-based roots. Most games from the series are available on Switch, but we’ve chosen Atelier Ayesha as the representative for this list, as the beginning of the glorious Dusk Trilogy.

As the name suggests, the series is about people working in ateliers, and there is a strong emphasis on collecting resources out in the world in order to craft items and potions that you can use in battle. This means that the strategic layer to the game is evident both in and out of combat. One of the best things about Atelier Ayesha is that once you’re finished there are plenty of other games in the series to enjoy.

Super Mario RPG 3g286r

Screenshot by Siliconera

Everyone talks about Paper Mario – in particular The Thousand-Year Door – but the game that the series was built from hardly gets mentioned. Super Mario RPG originally launched on the SNES, when very few games were made with 3D graphics. It was a risk in many ways. There was not only the question of whether people would be interested in a turn-based Super Mario game, but the game also went against many long-standing RPG traditions.

Timing is crucial in Super Mario RPG, not only when you attack but when you defend as well. It adds an extra level of strategy to the game, and is something that few RPGs do. Separating it further from other RPGs is just how much damage is dealt and taken. Attacks often deal single-digit numbers, far from other bombastic RPGs that could see people hit for thousands. Super Mario RPG is not only one of the best turn-based JRPGs but the Switch version gives it several modern updates that fans love. The perfect place to start in your Mario RPG journey.

Persona 5 Royal 4er2r

Screenshot of FeMC from Persona 5 Royal
Image via ATLUS

For many people Persona 5 is the pinnacle of the always excellent Persona series, and Persona 5 Royal improves on the already excellent game. Persona 5 returns to the dungeon crawling formula of the original Persona games, with carefully crafted dungeons rather than the seemingly never-ending procedural abysses of the modern Persona series, namely Persona 3 and Persona 4. This is one of the main reasons that Persona 5 has risen above the pack.

Persona 5 tells a beautiful, complex, and exceptionally long story about the power of friendship overcoming the status quo. Royal not only adds a new protagonist, but new social links, and additional scenes giving fans of the game even more to sink their teeth into. It runs flawlessly on the Switch, and its length means that the home to handheld feature of the console makes it the perfect way to play. Become part of the Phantom Thieves, and change society’s hearts.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus 684y6o

All mainline Pokémon games on the Switch are 3D turn-based JRPGs, and most of them are great, but we chose to highlight Pokémon Legends: Arceus as a completely fresh take on Pokémon’s formula. Instead of battling your way through a series of Gym Leaders before reaching the Elite Four and becoming the champion, you will be roaming around semi-open areas, catching Pokémon and studying them for the Pokédex.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus not only changes the focus to catching, but also changes Pokémon’s standard battle system. Battles are still turn-based, but they have an active system with Strong- and Agile-style moves. While the Pokémon and their movesets are the same as other games, what each move does is completely different in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. If you’ve tried out the mainline Pokémon games, and want something a little different, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the way to go.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses zm5h

Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo’s flagship series, and Three Houses is one of the series’ best. It has all of the turn-based strategic battles that the series is known for, as well as the ability to bond with your teammates to level them up, but as the name suggests, Three Houses has three different paths you can follow, adding to its replayability.

Fire Emblem is well known for its brutal permadeath system, where if your characters die in battle, they die in real life too. However, Three Houses included a Casual Mode where nobody can be gone for good. You can still have the traditional experience, but if like many people the permadeath turned you off from the series, this is the perfect entry point.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 6n3o49

Image via NIS America

The Legend of Heroes series is one of the longest running, beginning in the ‘80s, and many of them are available on the Switch. We have chosen Trails Through Daybreak to represent the series in this list, not just because it is one of the best, but because it is a great place to start as it begins a separate arc. Interestingly, Trails Through Daybreak is the only game on this list, which allows the player to choose between real-time combat similar to Nihon Falcom’s other major JRPG series Ys, or the turn-based combat the series is known for.

The series is known for its excellent characters and strategic combat, and Trails Through Daybreak exemplifies both of these. If you haven’t played the series before, you won’t understand every reference, but the developers have tried to make it one of the most accessible in the series in of the story and combat. It won’t take 30 years of video game knowledge to understand how good the intricate and complex writing is.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII Remastered 73386u

If you’re reading this list, you probably don’t need to be told how good Final Fantasy VII or even Final Fantasy VIII are. We’ll be holding our breaths a long time if we’re hoping for the excellent Final Fantasy VII Remake to come to Switch, but this console is one of the best places you can experience the original FF7. It can be purchased in a double pack with FF8, which is the game long-time fans of the series often point to as the best.

Both games have very different turn-based systems, which can create devastating synergies in different ways. FF7’s combat system is easier to use and more difficult to master. Creating devastating combinations requires good knowledge of Materia, Enemy Skills, and equipment that can link them in a way that stack. Conversely, FF8 is based on the Junction system, one that is difficult to grasp, but once you do, building up major damage is much simpler. Both can be purchased together at such a low cost, that it’s worth trying them out.

Monark 2x5x3m

Monark received middling reviews when it was released, and that’s because people found the battles too difficult. However, the battles are actually one of Monark’s greatest strengths, and where it fails is in explaining its systems properly. Once you understand how it works, and how your characters best synergize, it is one of the most satisfying turn-based strategy systems out there. The protagonist of Monark can Resonate with the other party sharing buffs across all characters, leading to extremely devastating damage.

Similar to the Persona series, Monark focuses on the character’s personal stories. Each character is based on one of the seven deadly sins, and each has a dark past. Despite this, they all band together to take on the forces that are keeping the students trapped in school and sucking the life out of them. Created by former Shin Megami Tensei developers, this one is perfect for those who enjoy diving deeply into combat systems.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 6m6kd

Screenshot of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch of the characters running away from a robot.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is what happens when legendary anime maker Studio Ghibli teams up with the studio that created the epic turn-based JRPG Jeanne D’arc. Both Wrath of the White Witch and Revenant Kingdom are available on Switch, but we picked the first in the series as the best place to start. Ni No Kuni has an interesting battle system unlike the others on this list, it’s not just because it mixes turn-based and action combat.

Ni No Kuni’s combat features beastly familiars, and magical characters; think about it like if Pokémon let the trainers in the scrap. If you like the taming and training aspect of beastly battlers then this is another one you should try. Above all Ni No Kuni overwhelms players with its charm, and is a must play turn-based title.

The Caligula Effect: Overdose 6o6q1k

Screenshot of The Caligula Effect Overdose of of the Ostinato Musicians

Written by Tadashi Satomi, best known for working on the original Persona series, The Caligula Effect: Overdose follows a group of people who have realized that they are living in the Matrix. Despite knowing that the world they inhabit is fake, there is no way to escape. First, they must take down the Ostinato Musicians, a group of people who want to keep the idyllic world alive.

Overdose adds a lot to the story beyond the original The Caligula Effect, including new party and chapters that you can play from the point of view of the Musicians. You grow closer to your teammates, and learn more about their lives both inside and outside of the world you can currently see. The Caligula Effect: Overdose has an active turn-based system where timing and sequencing play a major role in your success or failure. It can be difficult, but once you master it, it’s very satisfying.

Monark Developer working on new game

Furyu's Team Noir, the developer behind Monark, announced it is working on a new game project. The announcement coincided with the third anniversary of Monark’s release and was accompanied by a commemorative illustration by artist Ohajiki celebrating the milestone. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

While details are still limited, the team shared that this project will focus on themes different from those explored in Monark. We also don't know anything about possible platforms for the new Furyu and Team Noir game.

You can view the official social media post with the Monark anniversary illustration below:

https://twitter.com/monark_info/status/1845479644382048750

The third-anniversary celebration includes two campaigns on the official Monark developers social media . Those in Japan who are interested can participate by using the hashtag #Happy3rdAnniversaryMonark or reposting the campaign post for a chance to win autographed cards from 16 of Monark's voice actors.

This follows the recent release of Furyu's latest RPG Reynatis, which launched globally via NIS America. The game follows the story of a wizard named Marin who finds themselves in modern-day Shibuya, navigating the decision to use magical powers or blend in as an ordinary person. Additionally, extra DLC has been released to add to the story after launch.

Furyu and Team Noir's new game is in development, though details about the project are slim at the moment.

Monark review

When talk of a new game from former Shin Megami Tensei developers started up, I was all in. Between the mainline SMT games, the side stories, and Persona titles, anything anyone within that sphere wants to sell me I am ready to buy. Monark's more muted color palette and tactical battle system aren’t exactly like my aforementioned comfort games, but I did learn not to judge a game by its trailer.

Monark takes place in a fairly familiar setting. High schoolers find themselves trapped in mysterious circumstances that adults could have prevented if only they actually cared. In this case, Shin Mikado Academy's campus is filled with an eerie mist that turns anyone inside of it into a shell of who they once were. In order to save these Unsettled, our amnesiac main character accepts a phantom phone call and forms a pact with a supernatural being named Vanitas. The arrangement? Defeat the Pactbearers (one for each of the seven sins) in order to lift the barrier and stop the Otherworld from taking over.

With our small group of eclectic companions and a handful of half truths from of the school’s istration, the goal of saving the campus weighs heavy on the group for varying reasons. What drove the Pactbearers to bond with their Monarks? Are the Ideals they want to uphold righteous or selfish? Why does the dean have a doppelgänger, and what is their goal?

Monark review battle

Each Pactbearer controls one of the campus buildings. Floor by floor, the main character and one companion systematically solve puzzles in search of the connecting point between their world and the Otherworld. But walking through the mist isn't without its own hazards. Not only does exposure increase your Madness (MAD) gauge, but you run the risk of aggravating Unsettled students. They can attack, should you get too close. There's also the chance that an incoming Death Call could trigger people in the area to chase after you. Death Calls are avoidable, should you choose to dial the Precipice number Vanitas provides when you enter the area.

Monark utilizes a turn-based tactical system. All of your teammates, whether they are human or fiend, have standard attacks based on their weapon style and more devastating blows which consume HP. Pactbearers and Fiends in your party have access to Authorities; these are special skills that increase your MAD gauge instead of consuming HP. Positioning units just so can trigger chain attacks, which is something that I find true joy in doing. Figuring out the best and most damaging ways to slaughter enemies puts a smile on my face.

One of the more unique abilities Monark has is its resonance system. The main character's Authorities grant him the power to share status effects, stats, and even the Authorities of anyone he is resonating with. There's even a version that allows him to resonate with enemies, meaning if you are Awakened and resonating with a Pactbearer or their Monark, you can turn their own special Authority powers against them. So satisfying!

Monark review skill trees

Instead of using an experience system for character growth, Monark rewards successful battles with Spirit. Spirit has two functions. The first is to purchase battle items like health restoratives or cures from Vanitas. The second is to unlock and upgrade skills in your skill trees. All Spirit is pooled for you to allocate as you see fit. Every time you unlock or upgrade a node on the tree, your level will increase as well as any associated stats. Progression along the tree will at times require certain skills to be leveled up to unlock others. Leveling skills also alters them by reducing HP or MAD costs or increasing the area of effect.

Another way to boost stats is locating Alter Ego shards hidden around campus. So long as you meet the Ego requirement, you can pick these shards up. You'll also reveal redacted information from the target's profile card. If you can't pick up a shard, jot down which building/floor/room you spotted it in. This way you won’t be wasting time trying to where that shard asking for your Ego of Gluttony to be at least 400 is. Don't be like me, who 40 hours in was backtracking through every building hoping to stumble across the ones I missed.

Monark review affinities

If you find yourself under-leveled for Monark battles, you're going to want to do some grinding. You can re-dial those Precipice numbers if you like or find potential Otherworld connections in notes or lore books. Dungeons offer differing bonuses. Some grant items or equipment for your fiends. But if you are going after Spirit, I'm going to recommend you repeat any Fertile Grounds phone numbers in your s list. The higher the difficulty, the more bonus Spirit earned.

You can boost your Ego levels by taking personality tests from a few Shin Mikado students. I'll be honest, the analysis tied to the answers seems very odd and disted. What you think might be an answer that will increase your Gluttony levels will somehow fuel another Ego aspect. It's kind of a clunky mechanic when you compare it to Persona's tarot system, with no real rhyme or reason that makes sense. Instead of putting all of your eggs in the test basket, I recommend calling into Otherworld dungeons in search of fiends that match the sin you want to level up. If you're grinding for Spirit, why not chase after Ego at the same time?

Monark review Otherworld call

Monark does suffer from slightly lackluster character designs. The in-game models remind me of poorly detailed Harmonia humming dolls with their off-putting blank faces. You need to look at the dialogue box for emotional context clues. Textures are extremely flat, which is immediately noticeable in the school uniforms. Bookshelves in the library have no depth. But then a Monark shows up with incredible and intricate detailing, and I wonder why so much work went into something you encounter only once while the Protagonist and his companions remain dolls. When you consider the caliber of people who worked on this game, you expect better than end-of-life PS2 graphics.

My other big peeve is the lack of individual building maps. The game gives us a map with the layout of the Shin Mikado Academy campus, sure. But once we're inside a building, all we get is a mini-map in the top right corner. I could find no way to expand it either. A larger version with room markers and icons to show which Alter Ego shards I hadn't picked up yet would have been a huge help.

It may not be the next great JRPG, but if you've been looking for a tactics style game that provides a decent challenge, I'm going to recommend picking Monark up when your budget allows. It fits right into the niche, and the story’s twists and turns might just surprise you. If you look past the bland character models and focus on their individual stories, there's something charming and alluring lurking below the drab surface.

Monark will be available on February 22, 2022 for the PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Monark review battle Each Pactbearer controls one of the campus buildings. Monark review skill trees Instead of using an experience system for character growth, Monark rewards successful battles with Spirit. Monark review affinities If you find yourself under-leveled for Monark battles, you're going to want to do some grinding. Monark review Otherworld call Monark does suffer from slightly lackluster character designs. Monark Demo Appears for Switch, PS4, and PS5

There's a way to try NIS America's next game ahead of its launch. The company announced the Monark demo is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 outside of Japan. While the eShop site page isn't online, people can visit the PlayStation Store in browsers to grab it. However, the trial is only limited to consoles at the moment. While Monark will come to the PC too, there's no demo on Steam. This appeared in Japan back in October 2021.

NIS America released more details about the Monark demo online. First, it took to Twitter to confirm progress carries over. It also shared a new trailer designed to highlight the trial.

The video begins by offering an idea of what’s going on. Players are stuck in a school surrounded by a barrier. A strange mist infiltrated it due to Pactbearers. You’ll need to solve puzzles around the school, retain your sanity, customize fiends, and fight against the people behind the trouble. The strategic, turn-based battle system is also briefly showcased.

Monark will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC on February 22, 2022. It is immediately available in Japan. The Monark demo is available on consoles worldwide. There's no release date for a PC trial yet.

New Monark Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Its Battles

Monark is the latest Furyu RPG being put together by people who worked on Shin Megami Tensei games. Rather than a turn-based RPG, like SMT, it gets more strategic. To help people better understand how it works, there’s a new video. In the latest Monark gameplay trailer, NIS America explains its battle system.

Each playable character in the field will be paired and fight alongside their Fiend. These are Daemons tied to Ego. (Which correspond to the seven deadly sins like greed and pride.) Up to six people can be on the field at a time. In this strategic RPG fight, you’ll position your allies and their Fiends to attack. There is also a MAD Gauge. This fills as you fight.

When Madness kicks in, you’ll enter a berserk state. This makes you stronger than normal. However, you will attack anyone on the field. When it ends, the character who went MAD will “self destruct.”

Here’s the new Monark combat gameplay video. In addition to showing off how fights will work, people can hear the harusaruhi theme song “Pleiades.”

Monark will appear on the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC on February 22, 2022.

monark characters kokoro

A new Monark trailer is out in English, and it focuses on the characters in the JRPG created by former Shin Megami Tensei developers. Not only does it help introduce the people we’ll meet, but it shows how they’ll sound. In addition to English text and images introducing everyone, everyone’s English voice acting is shown off as well.

Things kick off with the player character being discovered in a school hallway. The mist is around, but Nozomi, Shinya, and Kakeru are relieved to see you are okay. However, there's an ominous student moving in the background.

From there, the Monark characters trailer is more focused. It begins with a look at the protagonist. Then, we get to see Nozomi Hinata, Ryotaro Date, Shinya Yuda, and Kokoro Sugurudai. Each one shows the principal or "sin" they're connected to. After that, there's a hint as to what to expect from this school.

This is actually the second recent Monark trailer to offer a better look at its characters. A Japanese trailer appeared at the beginning of September 2021 as well. People like Shinya, Kokoro, and Nozomi appeared in it.

Monark will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC in 2022 worldwide. It will appear on consoles in Japan on October 14, 2021.

Monark new trailer characters story

FuRyu released a brand new trailer for its title, Monark. This is the new JRPG being developed by former Shin Megami Tensei developers. The video showcased more Monark story scenes, as well as new footage of characters. The official Japanese site has been updated with this second PV trailer.

According to the cutscenes in the trailer, the school depicted at the beginning (known as Shin Mikado Academy) is surrounded by a mysterious Mist. It infects students and drives them mad, as seen with one unfortunate student whose eyes turn red as he clutches his head and screams. We then see shots of the various protagonists who can be chosen to form parties as they briefly delve into the roles they play in the story.

As revealed before, battles will be turn-based and allow for free commands. The main battle system is called EGO, tied to which of the seven deadly sins the protagonist is leaning towards. The alignment is affected mainly by the choices you make during the game. In turn, it will determine the type of demons, called "Underlings," you can summon in combat.
