A lot has been said about Metal Gear Solid V over the years. One hot topic always seems to involve Kiefer Sutherland and the voice of Venom Snake. Much controversy stems from the decision to replace longtime Snake voice actor David Hayter with the actor. However, Sutherland had his own merits.

Warning: This article includes spoilers for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. 3y1k6p

First things first! I do feel that David Hayter should have been Snake, or at least involved somewhat in the game. The way he was tossed aside never did sit right with me. However, I think Kiefer Sutherland is an incredible actor. I was sad about Hayter, but optimistic about Sutherland when the news first broke.

What we got, especially given the situation, was a truly stellar Venom Snake performance by Kiefer Sutherland. He brought a reverence and mystery to Venom Snake, while still providing enough of what people came to expect. Given the twist of Venom not actually being Big Boss, the entire thing played into the lore. Sutherland did an excellent job playing someone who thought he was someone else.

Venom Snake has very few lines of dialogue, often functioning as a borderline silent protagonist. This minimalistic approach is intentional, again given the game's now famous twist ending. Despite the limited dialogue, much of Sutherland's performance shines through the use of facial motion capture. It's a feature that was nearly impossible in previous Metal Gear Solid games due to technical limitations.

Through his facial expressions, Sutherland effectively conveys the complex emotions of Venom Snake. He appears confident in spite of confusion. He is patient, yet intolerant of foolishness. This nuanced performance adds depth to the character and helps immerse the player in the game's narrative. Hideo Kojima, the game's creator, mentioned that this was one reason for casting a film actor like Sutherland. (However, he'd been trying to replace Hayter with a film actor for years, so I think Kojima just really wants to be best friends with celebrities.)

When Sutherland does get an opportunity to speak as Venom Snake, he knocks it out of the park with a quiet confidence that only comes from his decades of experience. I want to pick out one scene in particular that I feel is quite possibly the best monologue in the entire series. It's short, poignant, and wonderfully performed.

The scene occurs at the end of Mission 43, "Shining Lights, Even in Death." After an emotionally draining mission, during which Venom Snake (and thus us) is forced to kill his infected soldiers, there is a scene where the ashes of the fallen are prepared to be buried at sea.

Tensions run high as Huey accuses Snake of being responsible for the massacre. Miller defends Snake, insisting that there was no other way and that the soldiers wanted him to shoot them. As Venom Snake begins to spread the first urn of ashes, he stops and delivers one of the most famous lines in the game:

"I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea. I will always be with you."

He then spreads the ashes on his own face.

"Plant your roots in me. I won't see you end as ashes."

Finally, he decides that the soldiers will not be buried at sea but will instead be ground into diamonds and worn on their uniforms.

"You're all diamonds."

This scene stands out as one of the most emotional in the series, and Sutherland's performance is a significant part of its impact. His delivery is quiet, sorrowful, and restrained, effectively conveying the weight of the moment. The facial expressions and subtle nuances in his voice draw the player into Venom Snake's emotions.

Unlike the dramatic and overtly emotional death of Sniper Wolf, this scene carries multiple layers of complexity. Sutherland portrays a Venom Snake who blames himself yet remains strong for his surviving soldiers, reveres his fallen comrades, and grapples with his quest for revenge. This intricate performance would have been challenging for a less experienced actor.

While Metal Gear Solid V has its share of problems, the performance of Kiefer Sutherland and the "Shining Lights, Even in Death" scene are highlights. They remind us why the series is so beloved. Despite the controversy, Sutherland brought depth and nuance to Venom Snake, proving that he was a worthy successor to the iconic role.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

<< How to read and understand sales

maxresdefault

Last week, Japan saw the release of Fate/Extella, the hack and slash Musou-style game from Type Moon’s series by Marvelous. We also saw the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker Media Create’s data on video game software and hardware that sold from the week of November 7 through November 13, 2016.

At top of the week, Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star placed #1 with the PlayStation Vita version selling 73,019 copies, its PS4 placed #2 with 67,356 copies in its debut, and the “Velber Box” edition* placed #6 with 18,439 copies sold in its debut for a total of 158,814 units sold in its debut across all versions.

Although depending on how you look at it, the Velber Box edition (the one that comes with Fate/Extella’s PS4/PS Vita versions, plus a booby mouse pad) could count as 18,439 added to both PS4 and PS Vita, but since Media Create is counting it as a single entry, we’ll go with that. In any case, those numbers look pretty good for Fate/Extella, especially considering how the Musou-style game market has seen better days. Selling about 100,000 copies isn’t anything new to the series, but perhaps Fate/Extella saw a nice boost from the popularity of Fate/Grand Order in Japan.

Next up, PriPara Mezameyo! Megami no Dress Design, Takara Tomy’s music and party game aimed towards younger girls, made its debut on 3DS with 28,865 copies sold to place #3, besting The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on PS4 which took #4 with 27,330 units sold in its debut.

At #7 Beyblade Burst by FuRyu sold 16,516 units in its first week, showing that while Beyblade might not be as popular as it was back in its heyday, it can still manage to pull up some sales to chart. in the top-10. On the other hand, we have Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience by Konami, the version that includes both The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes as well as all previously-released DLCs, placing #19 with 4,196 copies sold. There are many reasons as to why it saw such low numbers for its debut, but it could be because it’s barely been a year since the release of Metal Gear Solid V, and I probably don’t need to remind you guys how people have been feeling about Konami these days. And finally, we have Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan: Shijou Psi Dai no Psi-nan!? debut at #20 with 3,519 copies sold for 3DS.

On the hardware front, we saw the Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom sell a whopping 261,381 units in its first week in Japan. We can expect to see those numbers rise over the course of the next two months. The PlayStation 4 Pro also made its debut to help the PlayStation 4 system reach 92,344 units sold in the week, a huge bump from the 32,041 the week prior. According to the numbers Famitsu provided earlier this week, it sold 65,194 units in its debut.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Caution: this is a report on a mod that has slight connections to a Metal Gear Solid V: Spoiler. The spoiler will not be revealed or discussed, but keep in mind that it addresses it.

Quiet is one of the companion characters for Venom Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. There is a point in the game where Quiet is unavailable to be selected as a buddy. However, a mod shared by WASDREF makes it possible to bring her along in the Windows PC version of the game, even when it shouldn’t be possible.

The Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain mod is 52.2MB in size, and WASDREF recommends making a backup of your save file before using it. After Mission 43 is completed, a player can take the Data1.DATA file from the .zip file and drag and drop it into C:/Program Files/Steam/Steammapps/Common/MGS_TPP/Master to install it in the game. (Note: The location of your Steam folder may be different than mine. Wherever you installed Steam is where you want to go.)

Once installed, load Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Quiet will be available as a buddy for Venom Snake.

One of the things that struck me about Metal Gear Solid V during the hands-on demo I played this year at E3 was just how many ways there were to approach any given situation. Moreover, I was impressed by how important the Fulton Recovery System is to shaping these kinds of approaches. The hands-off preview I was showed behind closed doors this year made that all the more true.

In the preview, Snake was eavesdropping a on a few bored Russian soldiers. One of them decided to the time by giving their comrade an English lesson. “I…spent… last… night… with… your… girlfriend.”

The observation seems like a waste of time, but you learn something valuable from the encounter: One of the soldiers is bilingual. In my time with the demo, I had several encounters where I tried to interrogate Russian soldiers, but was unable to obtain anything due to the language barrier.

This is where the Fulton Recovery System comes into play. The demonstrator approached the bilingual solider, knocked him out, and sent him to Mother Base via the Fulton Recovery System. Once there, Sanke is ed by Ocelot and told that, by working with the bilingual soldier, you have learned to understand Russian. Now, when Snake observes soldiers from a distance, there will be subtitles that reveal their conversation.

Who knew? A conversation driven by boredom led to an incredible leak of military information. Boredom is a driving factor in another way, too. Snake will often come across cassette players in enemy camps. While they may seem like a mere collectible, it seems that some of the soldiers actually legitimately enjoy listening to them—as removing them will draw enemies to your location.

The attention to detail in Metal Gear Solid V is staggering, more so than in the previous titles I’ve experienced. These little touches add a new depth to how you approach situations in the game. You never know what you might find out by accident!

Siliconera got to speak with Robert Peeler, Konami's community manager, about Metal Gear Solid V at a closed-doors preview of the game.

After landing somewhere in Northern Afghanistan, Snake departs from his helicopter and ducks in some grass. A small barking sound is heard, and out of the desert comes a small, playful wolf pup.

"Now, you can do whatever you want here," said Peeler. "You can pick it up, ignore it, shoot it if you're heartless... but really, the best thing to do is send it to Mother Base using the Fulton Recovery System."

The demonstrator then attached a balloon to the young pup, and it was subsequently retrieved by an aircraft.

"These pups can be trained back at mother base, and help you in future missions. They can bark to provide a distraction, or sniff out decoys among real soldiers."

You can train your own pups in Metal Gear Solid V this September.

During Tokyo Game Show 2014, Konami announced (thanks, 4Gamer) during a presentation that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will release sometime in 2015 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. The game is also slated for release on PC, although it is unclear when the PC version will be made available.

Similar to the footage that was shown during Konami’s Gamescom conference last month, they also shared some more during Tokyo Game Show, where we get to see Big Boss sneaking and exploring around a jungle full of guards, with the help of his partner, Quiet.

At around 13:35, they show Big Boss stun an enemy with his robot arm, and they also mentioned that he’ll have all kinds of different “arms”. In the next part, they show how you can coordinate with Quiet to take out targets from long range.

Quiet seems to provide cover fire from a distance with her sniper rifle for the most part, but she’ll even occasionally jump right into the action. With helicopters and hundreds of enemies in the area, it looks like the Boss will need all the help he could get, this time around.

While sneaking around, things can get pretty messy if discovered, and even with Quiet’s , there might be some times where it’s best to run. However, if you’re cornered and can’t find a way out, she’ll do everything she can to help Big Boss make a safe escape.
