A new update patch for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection has added new resolution options for two of the games. The patch is available now for Steam players and will roll out for console versions at a later date.

The added resolution options apply to Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, with the patch adding two presets as well as custom settings. Players can choose to run both games at their original resolutions, or can now select Adjusted Mode, which runs at a native 1080p. However, this can be upscaled to 1440p or 4K. The highest possible resolution for your system will be selected automatically. The FMV sequences from the game can also be displayed at their original resolution or upscaled to 1080p.

As well as new resolution adjustments, the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection patch adds control remapping. Once again, this only applies to either Sons of Liberty or Snake Eater. Controls can be remapped for both controller and keyboard and mouse, or presets can be used. A new setting for mouse sensitivity has also been added.

While these resolution options can potentially make Metal Gear Solid 3 look better, a higher fidelity remake is also on the way. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is currently in development and, according to the development team, is now playable from start to end. However, a release date has yet to be announced.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S. The latest patch is available now for PC, with a console patch on its way at a later date.

Solid Snake Raiden Nendoroids

The Solid Snake and Raiden Metal Gear Solid Nendoroids are making a return after almost ten years. Both Metal Gear protagonists are now available to pre-order now ahead of a 2025 worldwide release.

The Metal Gear Nendoroids first released in 2015, with Solid Snake releasing in January and Raiden in November. Both figures are set to re-release in 2025, although they are available to pre-order now. Both Nendoroids are ¥6,500 from the Japanese store, which will release them in March 2025. Meanwhile, the US store is selling them for $37.99 and they will release in Q3 2025.

The Solid Snake Nendoroid is based primarily on his appearance in the first Metal Gear Solid, featuring the sneaking suit of that game. It can be posed like other Nendoroids, but can also be posed in a prone position for prime sneaking. It comes with two weapons, the SOCOM pistol and the FAMAS assault rifle, along with a cardboard box that he can hide in. A low-poly PS1 face piece is also included.

Meanwhile, the Raiden Nendoroid is based on his debut in Metal Gear Solid 2. He comes with similar add-ons to Snake, with a pistol, assault rifle and cardboard box. In addition, there is a katana and a naked body, referencing the later portions of the game on Arsenal Gear. This re-release also comes with a special illustration from Metal Gear artist Yoji Shinkawa, depicting the Nendoroid in his iconic style. There is also a face piece using an expression drawn by him.

The Solid Snake and Raiden Nendoroids are available to pre-order now from both the Japanese and US Good Smile Company stores, and will release in 2025. Their original games are available to play now in the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Solid Snake Figma’s an Update Figure

A number of figmas showed up at Good Smile Company’s Smile Fest 2024, and one was an updated version of the Metal Gear Solid 2 Solid Snake figure. It is a new take on the item that first appeared back in August 2018

The Metal Gear Solid 2 Solid Snake figma wears his original uniform, just like the first version of the figure. His face plate is a stern, stoic expression in the example photo. He’s also holding the tranquilizer that he came with originally. It does seem like the bodysuit is a different shade than the original version of the figma. Also, the paint job on the face seems a bit different and more in line with other recent releases.

Here’s how that looks:

To compare, here’s how the original 2018 version of the Metal Gear Solid 2 Solid figure looked. The additional accessories also included an assault rifle and a cardboard box. Some of the hand parts would even allow the figma to be posed as though it is hanging from a shelf or table.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is available on the PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Vita, Switch, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox Series X, Windows PC via various collections, and the Solid Snake figma will return in the future.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 Are Now Steam Deck Verified

Konami announced that Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are now Steam Deck verified. Additionally, the Bonus Content of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is now compatible with Steam Deck as well.

The latest Ver.1.4.1 and Ver.1.4.1D title updates appeared on Steam on January 29, 2024. The update seems to fix some of the issues that appeared when playing on Valve’s handheld gaming computer. However, it is unclear what changes players can expect.

The brief patch notes provided by Konami only confirmed Steam Deck for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, and the SteamDB website for MGS2 and MGS3 states the same. SteamDB also informs of fixes to some minor issues and issues related to playing with keyboard and mouse configuration.

As for the original Metal Gear Solid, the Steam page for the game informs that the game has the “playable” status instead of verified. However, the only caveat present in this title results from some in-game text being small, which could make it difficult to read on the Steam Deck display.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is immediately available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are part of the collection, and each game can be acquired individually on Steam.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Snake

The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection is upon us, bringing three beloved stealth classics to modern systems. Although the Konami franchise is now decades old, the cinematic storytelling of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty featured groundbreaking themes ahead of its time.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is generally viewed less fondly today. The sequel was a huge deal in 2001 as the world eagerly awaited a follow-up to Hideo Kojima’s previous masterpiece. But opinion quickly soured as the game went into some unexpected places. For starters, the initial tanker segment at the beginning of the game was short, with protagonist Solid Snake swiftly swapped out for a newcomer: Raiden. The story soon got strange as Raiden’s mission went on odd tangents. Eventually, his team began talking in riddles and demanding he turn the game console off.

However, this weirdness is exactly why Metal Gear Solid 2 is my favorite release in the franchise. It’s a unique title that challenges the player’s preconceived notions about video games, sometimes in the most direct way possible. Its late-stage revelations are some of the most thought-provoking moments I've ever experienced in this medium. It also somehow managed to be a harsh criticism of today’s political landscape, a whole 20 years ahead of time. With the release of the Master Collection on October 24, 2023, it’s the best time to re-examine what Kojima's sequel was trying to achieve.

As noted by Hideo Kojima himself, each of the Master Collection trilogy focuses on a different theme. The first game was the “Gene” game, with genetic manipulation as a key plot point. The third was the “Scene” game, which focused on how our environment shapes us. Metal Gear Solid 2 was the “Meme” game, and not just because of people quoting, “we managed to avoid drowning” years later. In its original meaning, a meme is a concept, or an idea ed down from person to person. Metal Gear Solid 2 expresses this by questioning the nature of information and how its spread can be manipulated.

In Metal Gear Solid 2, information in the United States is controlled by the Patriots, a series of artificial intelligence. They control what the population sees according to their whims and influence political decisions at every level of government. The Patriots have unchecked power and no ability to humans, even those who created them.

It’s not hard to spot the parallels to the world of algorithm-driven social media that we live in today. From Facebook to TikTok and YouTube, we are bombarded with content based on automated systems with minimal human input. Even Google engineers have itted they don’t fully know how their own algorithm works. These systems are open to abuse, allowing conspiracy theories and disturbing content to filter through and warp the information around us.

We see this throughout Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Raiden is lied to about the nature of his mission constantly. His mission on the Big Shell is a sham, a marine-based LARP of MGS1’s Shadow Moses mission, designed to train him to be a super soldier like the legendary Solid Snake. Even his girlfriend is manipulating him, hired by the Patriots to monitor his every move. His trauma from serving as a child soldier is preyed upon to facilitate this, in a manner not unlike some corners of modern social media, steering broken young men down their own paths of violence.

Image via Konami

While the switch to Raiden as the protagonist was controversial at the time, this focus on misinformation is vital to why it was necessary. While Snake’s previous missions haven’t always given him all the information, he is still a veteran able to draw on his own experience to move through a mission. Raiden is a rookie and much more reliant on the guidance of others, making him the perfect candidate for this kind of manipulation.

It also allows the presence of Raiden to become its own meta-commentary on the nature of false information. The game’s own marketing campaign was full of lies of its own. Not only did Raiden make no appearance in any pre-release material, but magazines also carried false screenshots of Snake running around the Big Shell as the playable character. Kojima manipulated the audience into expecting more Metal Gear Solid, while the final game defied those expectations.

However, this shift allowed Snake himself to take on a new role, one that offered a way past the manipulation. The first thing Raiden learns about Solid Snake is something we know to be false. Through playing the tanker segment, we know Snake isn't a terrorist despite being told he is. It's the smoking gun leading us to question everything else we hear from this point.

Screenshot of Solid Snake on the Big Shell in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Snake’s presence on the Big Shell is a problem. He and Otacon persistently dig up information that exposes the lies of the Patriots, causing the whole thing to collapse. Snake becomes a new voice of reason. He helps Raiden make sense of the confusion he suffers after learning how much of what he knew was a lie. In a powerful ending speech, he reminds Raiden that in a world of lies, he must find his own truth.

“Don’t obsess over words so much. Find the meaning behind the words. You can find your own name and your own future.”

Metal Gear Solid 2 is often overshadowed by the first and third games in the trilogy. However, it remains the most prophetic game in the series, offering an eerie reflection of the world we find ourselves in 20 years on. The Master Collection offers a chance for old and new players to examine this weirder entry in the series in a new light. One that not only predicted today's problems but, through Snake’s final speech, offers possible solutions.

The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 will launch on October 24, 2023, across various platforms, including the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Sometimes the best disguise for sneaking past guards is a cardboard box. Other times the best way to sneak past guards is by using your birthday suit. Those of you who’ve played Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty know that Raiden believes the latter, and his spirit lives on in this new Nendoroid figurine.

The Raiden Nendoroid includes a number of optional parts:  a hand gun, an assault rifle, a cardboard box, and of course, a naked body to honor his appearance in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Of particular note is the inclusion of an expression from Metal Gear Solid’s art director, Yoji Shinkawa. Also, like the Solid Snake Nendoroid, this figure has special articulation that allows him to bend, allowing you to create more poses.

You can find more images of Raiden over on the Good Smile Mikatan blog. He’s up for pre-order now, if you’re interested in getting your paws on him.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was localized by an individual named Agness Kaku. As a 24-year-old freelancer, Kaku worked past considerable hindrances on the most controversial Metal Gear Solid game to date, and in a recent interview with Hardcore Gaming 101, reveals her working conditions at the time.

For starters, she had access to no artwork or screenshots from the actual game.

This is in stark contrast to Jeremy Blaustein, who worked on the first Metal Gear Solid, and was provided with access to art work, information on the locales and weapons in the game, and to series director, Hideo Kojima, himself. Recalling her own experience with Sons of Liberty, Kaku shares: "Oh no, they were all originally just Word files. I should say that I was literally never given access to Konami."

Konami were also not the type to negotiate.

“The writing had to be cut down due to screen space concerns and Konami insisted on editing the product extensively; however, from what I understand, much of the errata corrections I performed on the original screenplay did survive,” Kaku recalls. “Many, many in-game /words were written in stone and non-negotiable. I making a case for how stupid 'sneak' sounded; I've no idea whether the agent even took these concerns to the clients.”

In addition to this, Konami required that the game’s English script match the Japanese on a micro level, despite the fact that, at the same time, there were very strict character limits on the English translation, due to the amount of text that could be displayed at any given time on the screen.

Blame also lies, to a large extent, with Kojima himself, whose writing didn’t make matters any easier.

"When a story has a plethora of cliches ('the-government-made-me-a-killer-then-abandoned-me' comes painfully to the mind) AND takes itself seriously, all one can do is lay on a good coat of noir and make it stick,” Kaku shares. “That, and eliminate glaring factual inaccuracies. I wish I could specific instances, but I know that they were mostly if not all to do with the government and military stuff.”

Ironically, despite the considerably harsh working conditions -- being a freelancer, she was paid less $5,000 for the project -- Kaku's name wasn’t even mentioned in the Sons of Liberty credits, and Konami later attempted to force her to remove critical write-ups of some of their titles from her website, despite the fact that she’d never been made to sign any non-disclosure agreements.

You can read the full interview with her at the HG101 link above; it provides fascinating insight into the very different localization processes for two very different games. You can even translation files for Metal Gear Solid 2!
