McDonald’s Employee Hatsune Miku Debuts Alongside Fries

McDonald’s Japan revealed more details about the collaboration with Hatsune Miku, including the character’s new design and the flavors of Shaka Shaka Potato. The collaboration started in Japan on February 26, 2025 and we don’t know the end date yet.

The 2 new Shaka Shaka Potato options for the collaboration are salted plum and nori seaweed flavor, and garlic and black pepper mayo flavor. These can be seen in a new video shared on the McDonald’s Japan social media that also shows Hatsune Miku in an employee outfit inspired by both her original design and the McDonald’s uniforms.

Additionally, the video plays the Nyan Cat song which Hatsune Miku popularized with the lyrics changed to “shaka.” As part of her new collaboration costume, Miku can be seen wearing cat ears and a red tie, with her usual top featuring gray and white stripes. The new Miku design was created by Japanese artist and illustrator Hamafugu, and you can see a reference sheet for it here:

The collaboration was originally teased last week on February 20, 2025, with the McDonald’s Japan social media posting the silhouette of Miku and hinting towards a Shaka Shaka Potato collab.

The McDonald’s Japan collaboration with Hatsune Miku kicked off on February 26, 2025 for a limited time.

The company shared a post on social media that includes a picture featuring the recognizable silhouette of Hatsune Miku, alongside a Japanese caption that translates to “This person will feature in year’s version of the Shaka Shaka Potato! Y.” The letter “Y” at the end of the post is used to mimic a leak.

https://twitter.com/McDonaldsJapan/status/1892174793543139404

The Shaka Shaka Potato are a McDonald’s Japan exclusive menu item that consists of french fries and a packet of seasoning or flavoring. The contents of the pouch are poured on the fries and then shaken to evenly spread it. The name comes from the shaking sound of the fries inside the package.

Kirby Happy Meal toys by McDonalds Japan

McDonald's Japan announced that it had ended sales for the Kirby Happy Meal sets much earlier than planned. The restaurant chain cited the set's immense popularity as the reason behind the early closure. In addition, it also canceled the third wave of the promotion, which was previously scheduled to start on March 8, 2024.

The Japanese news outlet 4Gamer further corroborated the meal set's sellout. It noted that McDonald's Japan saw a pace in sales that far exceeded its expectations ever since it launched the first wave of Kirby sets on February 23, 2024. The newer toys from the second wave, which were up for sale on March 1, 2024, were also sold out in a number of branches within the same day.

McDonald's Japan previously revealed eight Kirby toys that would feature in the franchise's Happy Meal sets in mid-February 2024. The original plan was to sell the first four toys including a Waddle Dee on February 23, 2024, and then switch over to the latter four that also included a Yellow Kirby on March 1, 2024. The chain also planned to launch the third wave for a week from March 8, 2024, where it would provide the remaining stocks for all eight toys.

The Kirby Happy Meal sets were available in McDonald's Japan branches from February 23, 2024, until March 1, 2024. The toys were sold out before the chain could complete the promotion on March 14, 2024.

McDonald's Japan X Hello Kitty

McDonald’s Japan revealed an image on its official social media teasing a Happy Meal collaboration with the Sanrio mascot Hello Kitty to celebrate the character's 50th anniversary. It hasn’t been confirmed when this promotion will begin or if it will spread outside of Japan.

We can assume this image is teasing a Hello Kitty promotion due to the classic red bow being present on the number 50. Additionally, a Happy Meal symbol is circled in the top left of the image. So, this event is likely to feature limited Happy Meal toys.

A Paw Patrol image was also teased, suggesting people will have an option of choosing between two types of Happy Meal toys. Since that image appeared on the same day, odds are the two promotions will run at the same time.

Recently, a previous Sanrio collaboration with McDonald’s that involved Hello Kitty shaped baskets appeared on TikTok. Though it recently started trending, it was actually launched at Singapore locations in 2019. It hasn’t been confirmed if McDonald’s Japan will take its plans in a similar direction.

The Hello Kitty McDonald’s Japan 50th anniversary Happy Meal will appear in the future.
