Taito has revealed that it will release the Poltergust 5000 from the Luigi's Mansion series as a crane game prize toy in Japan. The item will start appearing in Japanese amusement centers on December 21, 2024.

The toy will be known in Japan as "Obaccum Sound Light." However, it is very clearly modeled after the Poltergust 5000 from Luigi's Mansion 2. The 2013 3DS game was alternatively known in North America as Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but Nintendo uniformized the title when it released a remaster of the game for Nintendo Switch in June 2024 worldwide as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.

While the original gadget had swappable heads to switch between vacuum and light modes, this toy will simply have a light placed on the vacuum head. The toy can also play a random sound while the light is turned on. It will have five kinds of audio, which range from the gadget's machine noise to Luigi's voice.

The toy vacuum light modeled after Poltergust 5000 from the Luigi's Mansion series will be available as crane game prizes in amusement centers across Japan starting from Saturday, December 21, 2024. People can also immediately play Luigi's Mansion 2 HD on Nintendo Switch to see the actual item.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon remaster

During its June 2023 Direct, Nintendo announced that a remaster of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is in development for Nintendo Switch. Also known as Luigi's Mansion 2 in some areas, the game was originally released on the 3DS system back in 2013. While an exact date was not specified, the remaster is scheduled for release some time in 2024. The last Luigi's Mansion game was Luigi's Mansion 3 back in 2019.

You can find the official announcement tweet with screenshots below:

The trailer showed off Luigi's classic ghost-busting vacuum in action, as well as booby-trapped stairs and surprisingly hygienic ghosts. The announcement came shortly after news of a Super Mario RPG remaster and a new game featuring Princess Peach as the protagonist.

The Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon remaster is set to release on the Nintendo Switch some time in 2024.

Europe is going to be getting some new Nintendo Selects this week. This is the line of notable games published by Nintendo that enjoy significant price drops after being added. Kirby Triple Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and Super Mario 3D Land are next on the docket.

Each one of these three games will be £15.99/€19,99 after October 13, 2017 and get new box art. As a note, both Kirby Triple Deluxe and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon are already part of this line in North America, with their prices being $19.99.

Super Mario 3D Land was released on the Nintendo 3DS in Europe on November 2011. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon followed in March 2013. Kirby Triple Deluxe is the most recent of the three, having made its debut in May 2014.

The Year of Luigi, Nintendo’s year-long celebration involving the green Mario brother, will come to an end on March 18th, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has announced via Miiverse.

“Almost a year has ed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut,” Miyamoto writes. “Thanks to everyone's kind , we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother!”

“However, all good things must come to an end, and the Year of Luigi will conclude on March 18,” Miyamoto continues. “From this date on, the Year of Luigi Community and its Developers' Room will sadly no longer accept new posts or comments.”

With exactly a month to go before the Year of Luigi officially comes to an end, it should be interesting to see if Nintendo have any last-minute announcements in store before the deadline arrives, or whether Miyamoto’s message was simply meant to serve as a heads-up for Miiverse s that use the Luigi community.

Next Level Games, the studio behind games such as Punch-Out!! on Wii, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, plan to remain a Nintendo-exclusive developer, co-founder Jason Carr revealed in an interview with Gamasutra.

"We are doing only Nintendo products now," Carr said to Gamasutra, adding later on in the interview that Next Level see no need to look to other publishers.

"We have worked with a lot of other companies before, and we're super happy with our relationship with Nintendo," Carr shared. "There's no reason to look anywhere else. They keep giving us better and better IP to work with, and as long as we do our job and make good games for them there's no reason for us to venture out."

He elaborated: "Because we're still a small shop. We're under 70 people. We like that size. For us, we're like, why would you want to go and talk with these other guys? What's it doing for your business? The guys in the company are just really, really proud of the company and proud of the games they work on."

In another part of the interview, Carr and Luigi’s Mansion producer Ken Yeeloy say that working with Nintendo affords Next Level the luxury of time to develop a polished game.

Says Yeeloy: "When we work with them, it is strictly about the game, throughout the entire process. Obviously, on the production side, we have to talk about that. But the focus is driven by the quality of the game, and what is cool, and what feels good—not how much money it's going to cost or how long is it going to take."

Nintendo have not yet announced if Next Level are working on another title for them at the moment.

The latest Nendoroid figurine to come from Good Smile is a super cute version of Luigi, with several customizable bits and bobs. Considering it’s “still” the Year of Luigi, this is a great way to round it off for fans.

The writeup over at the company’s official blog, Kahotan, does a great job letting us know what sort of thinking went into the design and features for Nendo Luigi as well, such as the extended base . And Luigi does get something before his brother-There’s no Mario Nendoroid yet, as far as we’re aware.

Some cool things to note include that aforementioned longer-than-normal base , three different expressions (Standard, shocked and smiling), a Goomba and Bullet Bill as well as a pipe for you to stick Luigi in. There’s also a jumping and dash set of clouds to help give Luigi (Or anyone else you prefer) the sense of movement.

Finally, unlike quite a few Nendoroid’s, it also comes with a free cardboard background so you aren’t stuck having to imagine the world or print it out yourself. Handy for those who want to have a all-in-one package for their workplace or shelf.

Nendoroid Luigi is available for pre-order from the Good Smile store for 4000 yen ($40).

<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, the Nintendo 3DS received another high-profile game to adds to its repertoire, courtesy of Gung Ho Online Entertainment. Gung Ho released Puzzle & Dragons Z, an RPG version of their incredibly popular Puzzle & Dragons game, for the 3DS, and it got off to a booming start, with over 540,000 copies sold at launch.

Meanwhile, a number of other popular games saw a boost in sales, thanks to the approaching holidays. Pokémon X and Y, Super Mario 3D World, Monster Hunter 4 and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon were all among the titles that saw increased sales, while Attack on Titan—released two weeks ago—has held up rather well.

It’s also worth noting that Luigi’s Mansion is now nearly at 1 million sales at retail, which is a very impressive number for a brand being revived after so many years. Aside from Donkey Kong Country Returns, this is the second western-developed Nintendo game to have done so well in Japan in the past five years.

mh4

What is concerning, however, are hardware sales of the Nintendo 3DS itself. While total 3DS sales in Japan are at over 14 million thus far, this year the 3DS has only sold around 4.5 million units in the region, whereas in 2012, it had sold well over 5 million by the end of the year. It’s especially concerning considering that two of the biggest games 3DS will ever see—Pokémon X/Y and Monster Hunter 4—were released this year.

3DS’ performance calls into question just what Nintendo can do to maintain a healthy 3DS market and a healthy profit margin on the portable games front. When hardware sales are low, one normally turns to software sales to make up for the deficit. However, 3DS is already home to some of the biggest brands in Japanese gaming, and it’s going to be tough to consistently one-up these games in the future.

Additionally, publishers are continually being pulled away from traditional portables by smartphones, and Nintendo will need to combat this trend and incentivize their publishing partners to keep making Nintendo 3DS games. It’s going to take effort, and it should be interesting to see how the 3DS looks in a year from now.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Period: The week of December 9th – December 15th (2013) Top-seller: Puzzle & Dragons Z – 543,630 Nintendo 3DS sales: 50,846 | Total sales: 9,105,676 Nintendo 3DS XL sales: 130,710 | Total sales: 5,121,941 PlayStation Vita sales: 30,440 | Total sales: 2,147,915 Vita TV sales: 5,506 | 64,709 Wii U sales: 74,903 | Total sales: 1,343,139 << Last week’s software sales chart   Last week, the Nintendo 3DS received another high-profile game to adds to its repertoire, courtesy of Gung Ho Online Entertainment. Aside from Donkey Kong Country Returns, this is the second western-developed Nintendo game to have done so well in Japan in the past five years.   mh4 What is concerning, however, are hardware sales of the Nintendo 3DS itself.

While Nintendo’s Wii U sales have been alarmingly low, Nintendo 3DS sales are doing okay. The system isn’t pulling in the legendary numbers of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS, but the portable is heading into the holiday season with a very strong line-up of games and a cheaper model in the Nintendo 2DS to help broaden its base.

While the 3DS is seeing new games like Pokémon X/Y and Zelda: A Link Between Worlds as it heads into the holidays, 3DS titles released over the summer have been doing rather well, too. As part of their second quarter financial results briefing, Nintendo provided worldwide sales figures for some of these games. Here’s a look:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 6.35 million

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – 3.13 million

Tomodachi Collection (JP only) – 1.63 million

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team – 1.37 million

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D – 1.19 million

Note that the above figures include both retail and sales.

The Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 225,000 units during the month of June in the U.S., and was the best-selling videogame system for the month. Sales of the device were spurred on by the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and other existing 3DS games.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 505,000 copies between retail and digital, Nintendo of America reported this afternoon. Over 20% of these sales were digital sales via the Nintendo eShop, which is the second-highest retail-to-digital ratio on 3DS, only behind Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Meanwhile, another recent release, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, sold more than 108,000 copies in its second month, while Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon sold another 115,000 copies in its fourth month. Sales of Luigi’s Mansion are now at 750,000 copies in the U.S. alone.

Nintendo of America also add that their internal trackers indicate Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s strong sales will continue into July. It should be interesting to see how the game sold in its second month in their next sales report.
