More Cardcaptor Sakura Nendoroids that aren’t just variants of Sakura Kinomoto are coming, and the next two figures will be Toya Kinomoto and Yukito Tsukishiro. Both are based on their appearances as of the Clear Card anime and mangasequel series. These two are early in development. As such, only concept art of the two in Nendoroid form showed up in the showcase.

As the name suggests, Toya Kinomoto is Sakura’s older brother in the series. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, Yukito is his classmate, and the two are extremely close. When the series begins, both attend Seijyo High School. As such, their Nendoroids will feature them in those uniforms. There are no hints about possible accessories for either one.

Here's a closer look at their full concept art:

This is the first time either of these two characters appeared in the Nendoroid line of Cardcaptor Sakura figures. However, in the past we’ve seen various versions of Sakura Kinomoto, both in her costumes and her school uniform. Years ago, Nendoroids of Tomoyo Daidouji in her Tomoeda Elementary School school unform and Syaoran Li in his uniform for using magic appeared. One of the other more recent releases is a Nendoroid of Yue, which is available now.

The Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Nendoroids of Toya Kinomoto and Yukito Tsukishiro are in development, and there’s no release window for the figures yet. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. Kodansha handles the manga worldwide.

Anyway, I’m Falling in Love With You Anime Is a Pandemic Love Story

While one of the two new shojo anime series debuting on Crunchyroll in January 2025 took quite some time to go from manga to animated adaptation, Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You ended up rather swiftly heading to screens. Honestly, I can see why. I get it. This story is rooted in the COVID-19 pandemic experience, and telling it via another medium as swiftly as possible helps ensure those watching will better connect with it. But the thing is, I feel like this adaptation isn’t leaning as much into telling a unique love story shaped by how society changed and reacted to the pandemic as it could, though I hope future episodes could prove me wrong.

Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for the first episode of Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You below. 716m51

While most shojo series begin completely focused on the heroine and her school life, the early moments of the Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You anime adaptation don’t. Rather, it is about setting a scene. Instead, it begins with a vision of a Japanese city. The color palette is washed out and feels dismal. The news report is on the screens in the city. When Mizuho Nishino, our heroine, finally appears, it is an adult version of her. She laments the fact that her birthday was terrible, and a business email just came in asking if Megu Kawaguchi’s series could end that year. After seeing a high school girl walk past with four of her classmates, she is reminded of her own past and what happened on her 17th birthday. I really loved how it started, as it felt different from other shojo series and left me feeling like maybe it could pull from real-life events to make this reverse harem love story be unique.

From there, things flash back to July 2020. This would be about the height of the pandemic. It’s 95 degrees out, and the radio is warning about the heat and “infectious diseases,” which is COVID-19 of course. Mizuho’s father walks up to her room with a meal, to find her sleeping on the floor alongside her childhood friend. Her sketches of him are all around them. He’s understandably upset, of course, and cautions them about acting like they did when they were little. She says Kizuki Hazawa is like her little brother, which he doesn’t seem to pleased to hear. So we meet her first possible love interest, and realize that due to everything going on in the world that it is actually her birthday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNid7YYHeRQ&ab_channel=Crunchyroll

We meet the whole reverse harem once Mizuho leaves her house to head to school. In addition to Kizuki, she also grew up around Airu Izumi, Shin Kashiwagi, and Shugo Hoshikawa. In a fairly short span, we learn she stays up late drawing manga, suggesting she’s the “Megu Kawaguchi” referenced in the introduction, and quick snippets of Airu, Shin, and Shugo’s personalities come up in response to her being lazy about wearing makeup and staying up late. It’s a bit rushed, though I suppose that makes sense since this first episode is more about swiftly establishing things and focusing on Mizuho and Kizuki’s relationship.

But right away, I’m also feeling like there are missed opportunities. It’s like the Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You anime adaptation is doing more telling than showing. I sort of would expect more people to be wearing face masks during this period of time, given it was July 2020, but there are none. (Given that they want to highlight the art and character designs, I guess I can understand.) References to current events are minimal. We don’t really see so much the effect of things, rather than hear they happened. Prime examples include the initial report on the radio, Kizuki noting that swim practice finally resumed after being halted due to the pandemic, and upper-classman Saito Ryosuke mentioning classes being canceled for a time due to “some infectious disease.” But instead of properly responding to it in potentially meaningful ways in the first episode, we instead see it as an excuse for Airu to tease her about her crush on Saito or Saito to talk about how events, class trips, classes, and sports were canceled for a while.

I suppose I hoped for more reactions like Saito’s. It’s only about halfway through this first episode that we see someone react to current events, and it isn’t even one of the established “main” characters in Mizuho’s group. It’s a ing cast member acknowledging his depression over things that happened. The fact that Mizuho reacts to his ission the way that she does also left me disappointed. I knew it was coming, since I’m familiar with the source series. And I’m still impressed with Saito’s characterization and response to her reaction. Honestly, it’s the moments with Saito and Kizuki opening up that left the strongest impressions on me here, as they’re the two that seemed to have the strongest emotions and reactions here. Both in of feelings about the current state of things and emotions relating to Mizuho, they seem to really ring true and make this first episode.

I am hoping that maybe Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You starts to feel stronger and more unique as episodes go on. This first one was very focused on Mizuho and Kizuki, really breezing through establishing other characters and pandemic life. If handled well, it could end up being fun. After all, I did enjoy the original manga! I just feel like with the anime adaptation, it’s an opportunity to really show and highlight what life was like during a unique period of time in Japan, and so far it feels more like any shojo love story than a period piece.

The Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You anime adaptation is now airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide, and the manga is available via Kodansha worldwide.

CLAMP announced that the xxxHolic Rei manga will resume serialization in the 21st issue of Young Magazine. It’ll come out on April 21, 2025. [Thanks, Oricon!]

xxxHolic Rei is the second series, and it serves as a sequel to the original xxxHolic. It started serialization in 2013, though there are only less than 60 chapters as of the time of writing. This is due to multiple hiatuses throughout the series. Volume 4, the newest volume in the series, came out in Japan in 2016.

The first xxxHolic manga series ran from 2003 to 2011, with a total of 19 volumes in the manga. It focuses on Kimihiro Watanuki, a high schooler who can perceive the supernatural. Upon meeting a mysterious witch and shopkeeper, Yuko Ichihara, he asks for her to remove his ability to see spirits. She agrees, but in exchange for her help, he needs to work for her. The manga was very popular. Despite the lack of updates in the series proper, there was even a xxxHolic collaboration event in Identity V in 2023.

CLAMP is an influential manga artist group, known for multiple popular manga series and its work on character designs. Past works from CLAMP include Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. An exhibition for CLAMP’s works will appear in Japan in February 2025.

xxxHolic Rei will resume serialization from April 21, 2025.

Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms

The Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms manga really does a good job of showing how funny it is for a “beloved” girl to not get what she wants and have someone not fall all over her, and it only takes one episode of the anime to confirm this carries over to the full show. The SynergySP adaptation now running on Crunchyroll really drives home the lengths Mona Kawai will go to in order to get Medaka Koroiwa’s attention as we see every action in the adaptation. Not to mention Yu Serizawa’s performance as Mona and the depiction of her actual personality and response to being ignored and not adored comes across even stronger when animated than when appearing in a manga.

Editor’s Note: There will be some minor spoilers for the first episode of the Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms anime below. 5i204k

Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms has an absolutely hilarious start. Our first introduction to Mona Kawai is seeing every baby and visiting person in the newborn ward at the hospital focused on her, smiling, because she’s so adorable. She can’t even hold up her head yet, but everyone is smitten. A flash forward to her as a small child at an amusement park shows that even when she went to town on an ice cream cone and became a mess, her reaction to that and cleaning it up stole hearts from everyone around her. It absolutely sets the stage for a heroine who is supposed to be it. Cute, irresistible, outgoing, and yes, completely conniving.

So once we see Mona again in high school, SynergySP perfectly established who she is, why people are so devoted to her, and sets her up as a solid heroine in the Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms anime without making it seem too contrived or like she’s completely a “bad guy” for it. She just happened to be naturally lucky and blessed, which she ends up taking for granted and using to her advantage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol3VEokpIi4&ab_channel=Crunchyroll

This means early on, the Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms anime established the comedic element. Mona knows she’s blessed. She is set up as the queen bee due to circumstances, so the idea that Medaka Kuroiwa isn’t falling into line or behaving as expected makes the premise feel even stronger. Her reaction to it and need to not show that it isn’t getting to her makes it all even better. Especially since her internal voice sounds so different both in of tone and accent. Her meeting her match in a good and respectful guy who has a dream and maintains healthy boundaries is satisfying to watch.

That also means the Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms anime challenges and overarching problems are well established too. Throughout the majority of the first episode, we see the ordeals Mona goes through because one person doesn’t react the way she expected them after all experiences throughout her life. It also means we, as viewers, get to see that she isn’t just this charming from birth girl who is naturally gifted and good. She has a side to her! She’s got narcissistic tendencies! She’ll ignore boundaries if it means she gets what she wants! She can be a real brat! Him rebuffing her then leads to new challenges. So even though the first episode is focused on seeing what her ordeals in the series will be. However, I do hope that in later episodes we’ll see less boundary pushing and forced fanservice from Medaka however, and that her own developing feelings will result in her being more considerate to him.

The first episode of the Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms anime adaptation faithfully depicts the series’ story. Mona’s over-the-top actions and true mindsets and behavior are perfectly depicted in the series. Its direction really prioritizes the comedic elements of the situation. Plus, it sets up exactly what to expect as both Mona and Medaka deal with their own challenges going forward.

Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms is airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide. The manga is handled by Kodansha worldwide.

It then shows the promotional image of the characters standing in front of a graffitied wall, before a final cutscene plays.

Wind Breaker: Rebel Heroes will feature an original story. However, the author for the manga, Satoru Nii, supervised it. Wind Breaker follows the story of Haruka Sakura, an outcast who developed fighting skills due to the social ostracization from his peers. He enrolls into Furin High School, which puts emphasis on brawn over brain, in order to climb to the top. The story focuses on Haruka learning how to fight for others rather than himself, as well as making friends who care about who he is rather than what he looks like.

Wind Breaker: Rebel Heroes will come out on March 12, 2025 in Japan for the Windows PC and mobile devices.

magical girl lyrical nanoha manga

A new Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha manga project is in production, with Shuichi Kawakami returning to work on it. The manga series will appear on Kodansha’s Wednesday Sirius. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Shuichi Kawakami previously worked on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Innocent. This will be his first serialization since Innocent, and he stated on X (formerly Twitter) that he would pour all of his energy into this new series. There is no information on the name, main character, or chronology for the new manga series, but more information will appear on the official X for the series.

As well, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the show, a special program will air on December 28, 2024. The program will be a celebratory episode of Mikako’s Room, which previously appeared on home releases like Blu-Rays. Yukari Tamura (Nanoha) and Nana Mizuki (Fate) will appear on the episode as well, and the three of them will look back on the show’s history and share new information.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha first started airing in 2004, and had some unique twists to the typical magical girl genre. For example, much of the magic on the show is combined with technology. There are multiple shows in the series, showing Nanoha and her rival Fate meet, become friends, and later the Time-Space istration Bureau.

You can watch Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha on Amazon Prime.

The first official picture book for The Quintessential Quintuplets will be reprinted mere days after its initial release. The Quintuplets and Pancakes will cost 1500 JPY ($10.55) and appear in bookstores in Japan once more. [Thanks, PR Times!]

This picture book was released to commemorate the theatrical release of The Quintessential Quintuplets. Though it came out on September 12, 2024, many fans have reported that they weren’t able to buy it, or that they bought the last one. The high demand for it led to the decision to reprint the book even though it just came out.

It features the Nakano family’s childhood, depicting a happy memory with their mother and some pancakes. Many fans think it’s an adorable book, which may be why it was so popular. Kodansha notes that the book’s location may differ depending on the bookstore. Some place it with the children’s picture books. Others may place it in the comics section. So if you can’t find it in one section, you may want to try looking for it somewhere else or asking an employee.

The The Quintessential Quintuplets TV anime special will appear in theaters in Japan for a limited time. It’ll be available for about three weeks from September 20, 2024.

You can watch the trailer for The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEWwTI-yk00

It has a very unique manner of gameplay in which you can collect various manga s. Each manga depicts a different scene and has various stats or effects. In battle, we can see how the player puts together these s to create a manga page, and then their character acts according to the s. There are also various missions you can complete for each , such as frying a mackerel or lining things up in a row. At the end of the trailer, there’s a mode that looks like Coffee Talk in which you speak with two different characters as a bartender. More information on the game will reveal what that’s all about.

The game will be available in Japanese, English, and Chinese (both Traditional and Simplified). Kodansha is the publisher and Mono Entertainment is the developer. Previous games from Mono Entertainment include Ignistone and Clock Rogue. Both of them are roguelike games, so this genre appears to be Mono Entertainment’s niche.

fairy tail dungeons - a colossal dragon creature roars at a party of people ready to fight it

Fairy Tail: Dungeons offers quick, snappy roguelite deck-building for someone looking for a few quick hands of high-stakes cards. Strikingly simple, but with some great depth to the systems you can quickly pick up, it’s highly entertaining whether you only have a few minutes to play or if you want to spend a good deal of time in its dungeon depths.

As someone with no knowledge of the anime, the game offers a fast introduction to some of the characters that felt like just enough to get you rolling. I was concerned that I’d be totally lost after the last few anime games that I’d played when I didn’t know the show, but this title doesn’t really need you to know much. It gives you a handful of playable characters (as well as some other ones you meet), but all you really need to know is their play style and how they fight. As this game is light on plot, it feels like you don’t lose anything from not knowing the show and you still feel like you “get” everything that’s happening. That said, this game is extremely light on plot, but I didn’t find I needed a story.

Instead, I was more focused on the card play. In Fairy Tail: Dungeons, you get a small deck of cards to play with at first. You get a mixture of attack cards that deal damage to foes as well as defensive cards that will block incoming damage. These cards area dealt to you four at a time, and you’ll start each round with a full hand of four. You’re given three MP every round you can use, and you get to decide how you spend those MP with your cards (most of which cost one or two MP to cast).

Fairy Tail: Dungeons - Natsu squares off against an ape-like monster, his character surrounded by cards with various casting costs.

As for what you should do with your MP every turn, that depends on what your enemies are up to. The game will indicate some damage numbers beside the monsters if they’re going to attack you. If they’re not, you can select an enemy to figure out what sort of defensive or buff spells they may be casting instead. Enemies can also prepare highly-damaging attacks that come with unique ways of stopping them (play X number of attack cards, for example). Knowing everything your opponents are doing helps guide you in what you should do each round.

And while you only have four cards to choose from each round, it feels like you really need to think about what to play – you’ll agonize a lot over that simple hand. Should you bulk up your defenses? Try to kill something before it hits you? Prioritize playing the right cards to stop and incoming big hit (always do this one)? Your life points persist across the dungeon, so you can’t just blunder through a fight and then recover afterwards. Mistakes pile on, and if you take too much damage over several fights, you’ll be back to the start of Fairy Tail: Dungeons.

You’ll agonize quickly, though. With only a few cards to play, things move briskly through the game. There’s only so much you can do with each hand, so things hurry along. You can spend a bit of your life to redraw your hand if it’s utterly useless, but usually you’ll want to play what you have. This means you’re not usually taking too long to make your decisions, but there still feels like there’s a great depth every round despite the small hand size.

The real depth lies in building your deck and planning what possibilities you want to have in Fairy Tail: Dungeons. As you explore the dungeon map by choosing tiles to visit, you can pick up cards after fights, events you can stumble across, or shops that appear. Now, I loaded my deck with high-damage cards whenever I came across one, and while it worked great for a while, it eventually meant that my defensive cards didn’t show up as much when I was in combat purely because I had more attack cards in my deck. It was a pure probability thing that I had foolishly ignored in hopes of just slamming enemies. Not that playing more defensively got me any further a few rounds later. Still, I really liked that I had to consider how I was composing my deck for probability.

And there are several ways you can shape your deck. You can improve some of your capabilities in combat or add better abilities to specific cards using an upgrade system that costs Lacrima, a currency you pick up as you play. You can also just outright refuse some of the cards you’ve been offered, as well as prune a card from your deck at specific points. After a short time, it felt more important to remove cards, refuse to take them if I felt I had too many high cost cards, or to focus on just improving what I had to better know what to expect each hand rather than continually expand and mess up a predictable probability of getting the cards I wanted.

Still, there are some cool things that may make you really want to take that new card. Some cards can play off of one another to cause improved effects (Magic Chains), so you’ll want to ensure you get those often. But is adding a new chain worth it if it bloats your deck? Alternatively, you might unlock a new chain in your upgrade tree that you’ll wish you had picked up a card for earlier. It gave me a lot to think about as I sat mulling over whether to take a card or not.

How you stack that deck also depends on the character you use in Fairy Tail: Dungeons. Natsu plays offensively but is still more an all-rounder, but Gray plays more defensively, stacking up huge amounts of protection against damage. Lucy offered some more buffs and casts. The playable characters give some fun options on how to play and build your deck, and their abilities all look very different from each other’s adding some nice visual flair and variety.

You also have a fair amount of wiggle room in how you play based on the map as well. Not every tile you can reach is an encounter. There are spaces that have you meeting other characters and having events, tiles with Lacrima on them, and shops as well. You can only see so far ahead so you can’t fully plan your route, but you can shoot for paths with fewer fights to preserve life (or more if you want better rewards). How you walk matters as much as how you play your cards.

And when you die (and I died a lot), you gain points towards a rank that unlocks amulets for future runs. These rarely offered extreme bonuses, but can give you little boosts in health, the probability of getting zero cost cards, the ability to carry more items (which is limited gear that can also give you some nice effects), and more. They don’t really break the game so I never felt like I was gaining overwhelming power, but it was enough to get a little leg up here and there.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons feels like a straightforward, but still nicely tactical, deck-building game. Being able to play a few quick hands in a fight was great for moments when there wasn’t much time to play, and the ability to dive right in and pick up the rules in seconds made it easy to just jump right into. Even so, the systems underneath had enough depth that it kept pulling me back in to reshape my strategies for the next run.

fairy tail dungeons - a colossal dragon creature roars at a party of people ready to fight it

Fairy Tail Dungeons - official indie games coming to PC Steam

Kodansha announced that it has established the Fairy Tail Indie Game Guild project. It will use this guild to help independent game creators release games themed after Hiro Mashima's manga series of the same title.

The company also revealed the first two games that will be part of the project. It will release both titles on PC via Steam worldwide in seven languages: Japanese, English, French, Korean, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons will be the first game in this project. It will feature a rogue-lite gameplay system where the player will collect magic cards based on attacks from the series' characters and construct a deck with them for the chosen character to fight monsters inside the dungeon. This game will be available on August 27, 2024 in Japan, South Korea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand, or August 26, 2024 for the rest of the world.

The second game in the project will be Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc. As the title suggests, this game will feature casual beach volleyball matches between Fairy Tail characters with additional special magic effects. Kodansha will release this game simultaneously worldwide on September 16 or 17, 2024, depending on the time zone.

The Fairy Tail series already has an official RPG for PC and consoles developed by Koei Tecmo's Gust, and the same studio is working on its sequel that will appear in Winter 2024. The new indie titles will further complement the lineup of games based on the franchise. In the Japanese press release, Kadokawa added that it will release Fairy Tail: Birth of Magic, a versus game with original magic creation system, as the third indie title.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons will appear first on August 26 or 27, 2024, and Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc will follow on September 16 or 17, 2024. Both Fairy Tail indie games will be available worldwide digitally on PC via Steam.
