Square Enix announced that it has officially canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. The company added that it will focus on developing Kingdom Hearts 4 to ensure that the Kingdom Hearts series still continues on.

The company originally revealed Missing-Link along with Kingdom Hearts 4 during the series' 20th anniversary event in April 2022. The mobile app was to be made with a robust avatar character customization and a movement system that would both GPS-based tracking and manual pad controls.

Several people were able to get early hands-on experience with Missing-Link via closed beta tests, which Square Enix held in late 2023 and May 2024. However, in November 2024, the company announced a delay for the full launch of the mobile game without providing a new release window. The game's official social media had no further posts between the above delay announcement and today's confirmation of the game's cancellation.

The Tweet in question is quite short. After saying that it made the “difficult decision to delay the release,” it apologizes to the players and expresses appreciation for their patience. The Japanese version of the Tweet provides about as much information. Though Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was supposed to come out in 2024, that obviously will no longer come to . The official channels for the game will let us know when Square Enix decides on a new release window.

Square Enix announced Missing-Link in 2022. This was part of the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary. Several closed betas occurred in 2023 and earlier 2024. Even during this period, there were a few problems with delays, though these were limited to the Android version. In of genre, this game will be an action RPG. We do know some details as well, such as it having a real-life GPS function, character creation, and an AP stamina system.

Square Enix announced that a new Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test for iOS devices will appear in Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom in early May 2024. People can apply now for the Closed Beta Test until April 26, 2024.

The company will communicate the result of the application process on May 1, 2024, and those picked will be able to play the closed beta test between May 2-10, 2024. This time around, about 2,500 people will be chosen for the test. The recommended system requirements for the beta test are iOS 15.0 version or higher, an iPhone XS or more modern model, and at least 5GB of free space.

The first iOS closed beta test for Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link ran between November 29 and December 8, 2023. While the test was originally scheduled to also appear for Android devices sometime in January 2024, the test was delayed for a Spring 2024 window. As a reminder, Square Enix recently announced another delay for the Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Android closed beta test. However, this time the delay will only move the date one week to May 2-10, 2024.

People who want to check out the Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta on Android will have to wait another week. At the same time, those who have iOS devices will be able to play the in-development game once again. Square Enix announced a revision for the closed beta test that includes the above changes via a thread on the mobile game's North American X .

The company made changes to the closed beta test as it reflected on the received from the prior iOS beta test, which ran from late November 2023 to early December 2023. One of the issues that s reported from that test pertained to the significant battery life drain.

Square Enix originally planned to run the Android closed beta test in January 2024. However, around the end of the month, it announced a delay to Spring 2024. The company has since scheduled the test to run from April 25, 2024, to May 2, 2024. With the new delay announcement, that schedule got pushed back a week to May 2-10, 2024. Square Enix will also run an additional beta test for iOS devices at the same time.

The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test will run on May 2-10, 2024. Square Enix will open registrations for the new iOS closed beta test on Monday, April 22, 2024. It will notify the selected players around Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

Renowned Japanese singer and Kingdom Hearts theme extraordinaire Hikaru Utada just dropped a mega bomb with their Science Fiction album. This album doesn’t drop any new music, but rather, includes re-releases of songs like "Hikari," the Japanese version of the Kingdom Hearts theme “Simple and Clean.” It also makes it even harder to wait for the release of Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link in the process.

This new re-recording of the Japanese version of the classic Kingdom Hearts theme is a bop, of course, but there’s more to it than that. This re-release of the 2002 track is a sharp reminder of the lack of information regarding the Kingdom Hearts series. More importantly, the severe delay between new details or a release of both Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link.

For reference, Hikaru Utada’s new album dropped on April 10, 2024. This just so happens to fall around the two-year anniversary of both Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link’s announcements. Sadly, precious little appeared in two years that followed. At least, worldwide, given there was a Japanese beta in 2023.

This re-recording of the Kingdom Hearts song "Hikari" doesn’t necessarily give us too much hope for more info soon, either. This is more like a coincidental event, if anything, which makes the whole situation more agonizing. That said, there is the potential for at least some Missing Link news in the near future. After all, it still has a release window of 2024 for Android and iOS. Until that release window changes, it is only a matter of time until we hear more about the latest mobile game in the series. There is a chance that Missing Link will even connect the past games to Kingdom Hearts 4 or offer some bit of lore to tie us over while we wait.

As for the lack of Kingdom Hearts 4 news, there could be a couple of reasons for that. For one, Square Enix has been quite busy lately. Final Fantasy XVI released last year in 2023, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed it up not even a full year later. Square Enix isn’t done either, as FFXIV: Dawntrail is also coming out in 2024. This means renowned Kingdom Hearts Director Tetsuya Nomura, is also quite busy with the recent releases.

It is possible Square Enix is waiting for games and expansions like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail to come out to give some breathing room, then focus on the Kingdom Hearts series. If that is the case, we could finally see more about it in the latter half of 2024. But there is even a chance we may not hear anything until 2025.

As for when the game comes out, I would presume 2025 at the earliest. However, there is a chance it could even come out in 2026. I imagine we will know more once Missing Link begins its road to release. In the meantime, I will continue to listen to the new version of “Hikari” on repeat.

Kingdom Hearts 4 has no current release window or confirmed platforms. Missing Link is scheduled to release sometime in 2024 for Android and iOS.

Square Enix announced on social media that the Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Android Closed Beta Test will be delayed until Spring 2024. The test was initially planned to begin sometime in January 2024.

The Closed Beta Test was postponed after the development team found that there needed to be further adjustments made to make the game fully compatible for a "wider range" of Android devices. Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link's beta test has been scheduled for Spring 2024 in order to be able to accommodate the need to make these adjustments.

Square Enix also revealed that the winners for the Closed Beta Test's access will be announced at a later date alongside a detailed schedule for the test.

The Closed Beta Test for the iOS version of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link took place from November 29, 2023 to December 8, 2023, allowing players from Australia and the United Kingdom to try out the game. Around 1,500 people were able to experience the game back in late 2023. Players were allowed to share video and photos of the game during the Closed Beta Test for the iOS, and are also allowed to share footage for the Android test.

Many players reported experiencing heavy batter drain while playing Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link on their devices and hoped that later versions of the game will improve on the battery usage. The game's GPS function is likely the cause for the excessive battery drain.

The mobile game allows players to travel through the real world using a GPS mode in order to fight enemies on the world map, and also players can utilize a stationary mode that allows them to consume AP in order to commence battles. Players can also activate a hands-free mode while using the GPS function in order to have battles auto-play.

Kingdom Hearts series Director Tetsuya Nomura shared a message indicating that Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link players can share footage online of the contents in the beta test. The iOS beta test kicked off on November 29, 2023 only for players located in Australia and the United Kingdom.

The message shared by the official Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link social media is available only in Japanese. The English translation of the post is the following:

Dear drifters,

Since sharing information forms a part of playing the game, ing and distributing images and videos to social network sites is allowed.

However, please be careful not to expose your address by using location information.

A warning will be displayed when the GPS function is in use, and the display of location names can be turned on and off as well, so please make sure to use it with caution.

The Kingdom Hearts Missing Link closed beta started on November 29, 2023, and we’ve started to hear about battery life drain. Aitai Kuji CEO Audrey Lamsam stated an example of what the early build did to her battery online.

Here’s Lamsam’s impression from the first day of the closed beta. Note that this is based on an early, in-progress build. Part of the purpose of said tests is to obtain information on performance, and the state of the game will likely change between now and the final build. 

As a reminder, Kingdom Hearts Missing Link is an augmented reality game like Pokemon GO, which means the nature of it running on the system can affect the battery life and drain it at an increased pace. This is due to the geolocation element tapping into a person’s real-world location as they move around to complete objectives in the virtual world. 

As a reminder, only the iOS Kingdom Hearts Missing Link closed beta test is running at the moment. That will continue until December 8, 2023. The Android one is also on the way. However, that won’t start until an as-yet-unspecified date in January 2024. Only about 3,000 people are being picked to play, with 1,500 participants on each platform.

Ads for Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link are appearing on places like Facebook and Instagram and show characters and new art for the game. The ones appearing online are promoting the closed beta test.

One of the major images showing up in these ments looks at the player avatar options. We get to see the full-body male and female designs. Each one is wielding a Keyblade, though the designs are slightly different. They also wear white coats and hits over black shirts, purple pants, and black boots.

Here are some of the screenshots of the various Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link ads showing characters shared by X-Cast on social media. The one image shows an Enhancements screen where a “King Mickey” Piece is being leveled up with fragments. Other folks shown as Pieces in the ad images include Queen Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy, Woody, Sully, Winnie the Pooh, the Cheshire Cat, Bambi, Mrs. Potts with Chip, Mike Wazowski, and the Toy Story alien.

As a reminder, people can apply for the closed betas until November 19, 2023. There will be 1,500 people able to play on iOS devices between November 29, 2023 and December 8, 2023. Another 1,500 will get to play on Android devices in January 2024.

Square Enix announced that it opened Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test applications. However, only people in Australia and the United Kingdom can apply, and only about 3,000 players will be picked.

The announcement included details about when the closed beta test will happen, a trailer, and insight into what’s going on with it. People can apply to take part in the Android and Apple iOS tests until November 19, 2023. If someone is 18 and in Australia or the UK, they can apply via the official site. 

Those picked for the iOS test will take part between November 29, 2023 and December 8, 2023, and about 1,500 will be chosen for it. If someone is g up for the Android one, that won’t happen until sometime in January 2024. Again, about 1,500 people will be picked.

People will also need certain devices to take part. Someone trying for the iOS closed beta will need an iPhone XS with iOS 15.0 and 5GB of space. People with Android ones need a Snapdragon 845 or better with at least Android 10, 4GB RAM, and 5GB space.

Finally, here’s the new Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test trailer, which shows some story elements and hints at how it works. Like Pokemon GO or Monster Hunter Now, it is a GPS-based game and action RPG. So someone will actually be traveling.

Kingdom Hearts series Director Tetsuya Nomura provided an update on Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link online. He stated more news about the mobile game will come out "next week."

His message stated that it had been awhile since he posted anything, so he thought he might share some artwork. He believed he had shared the most recent social media post quietly, but Nomura ended up being surprised by the public's response to it. He decided he would share the artwork at a later date. However, no exact date was offered for the next update beyond it showing up between October 29, 2023 and November 4, 2023.

During the prototype test in January, Nomura indicated that the test version only featured roughly 50% of the service as it would be when it eventually launched, but he has corrected himself and has stated that the prototype test only represented 30% of the service.

The latest update made by Nomura also featured a brand new screenshot from the game, showing what looks to be a rustic building set in Scala Ad Caelum lit by street lamps and wall sconces. On the right side a bridge can be seen, and to the left a tunnel and a large stone castle-like structure are visible. There is currently no known significance to the location or what could be inside of the building.

Square Enix has shared a brand new image of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link on their social media. The image shows off an area seemingly under construction with large cranes.

The location under construction is in front of a rustic castle set in the world of Scala Ad Caelum, which was introduced in Kingdom Hearts 3. The official Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link social media also updated its banner to feature a brand new image of Scala Ad Caelum set at night time with a shooting star in the night sky.

Information on the game was last shared in January 2023 when Square Enix highlighted details about the gameplay and character customization features present in the mobile game during its prototype test in Japan.

During the prototype test in January, series director Tetsuya Nomura indicated that the test version only featured roughly 70% of the gameplay features and 50% of the UI elements that will appear in the game. Also, none of the story content in the prototype test was intended to appear in the final version of the mobile game.

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura shared an update about the progress of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link development following the closed prototype test, which ran through January 18-13, 2023. Only 1,000 players were able to participate in this past beta, available only for Japanese servers and limited to iOS devices. Nomura also confirmed that players on Android devices, himself included, would be next to participate in future tests.

Square Enix shared information about gameplay elements that will appear in Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. These details specifically concern travel, along with the two different ways players can play the title. Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link will also feature an AP system, similar to other mobile games, which means players will spend stamina to engage in battles, but is a bit different between its two gameplay modes.

Concerning the two different gameplay systems players can use in Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, one option is using the "GPS" function and the "gamepad" function. The GPS function will track player movement as you walk, whereas the gamepad function will allow you to control your character without needing to move. Players can also use a "hands-free" feature for combat while in GPS mode. Players can also obtain AP through battles in GPS mode.

However, AP will be expended through the gamepad function. This means that AP and obtaining treasure chests will cost stamina. Alternating between these two functions will allow for players to spend and acquire stamina.

Square Enix provided a glimpse into what character customization will look like in Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. While it was already confirmed that players will be able to create their own unique avatar, this is the first time the interface and various costume options have been shown. During the closed beta test, those who were able to participate could see this system for themselves. However, the official Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link Twitter shared a few images and brief description of how character customization works.

According to the tweet, players will be able to change the individual color of every piece of clothing. Several different types of hoods, top hats, and jackets are shown in the image. This also includes a red version of the default outfit shown in a previous trailer. Players will be able to obtain a variety of outfits from the in-game shop. The tweet does not specify if outfits will be available to purchase with in-game or currency.
