The Steam Spring Sale can often be overwhelming, with thousands of titles slashed in price, it can be hard to figure out which games are a good deal. There is also the problem of choice, and gamers don’t want to spend their hard earned cash on a game they don’t like. If you’re an RPG fan, then we’ve rounded up ten of the best RPGs in the Steam Spring Sale that are worth both your time and money.

Here are our recommendations for the best value RPGs in the Steam Spring Sale.

Chrono Trigger 2i592n

Chrono Trigger is one of the best games of all time, and while the Steam version isn’t the best, this Steam Spring Sale discount is still a bargain. One of the most iconic turn-based RPGs, Chrono Trigger is about exploring time periods, and getting dragged into a quest far bigger than yourself. With seven recruitable characters, and 12 different endings, Chrono Trigger set up many features that great RPGs use to this day.

Chrono Trigger is available for $3.74 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Yakuza 0 142m2b

All of the Yakuza games are available during the Steam Spring Sale, but we recommend Yakuza 0 as a starting point if you haven’t played anything from the series. Yakuza 0 is not only chronologically the first game in the series, telling the back story to two of the series’ main characters Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, but it’s also one of the best. This action RPG series is one that every RPG fan should try.

Yakuza 0 costs just $10.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Persona 4 Golden 375965

Like the Yakuza series, the modern Persona series including recent releases like Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio, are all available during the Steam Spring Sale, but we’re recommending Persona 4 Golden. It’s one of the lesser played games in the series as it was a PlayStation Vita exclusive for almost a decade, and as all Persona games are standalone stories, it’s a great place to dive in. This turn-based RPG asks you to strengthen your friendships to unlock your true power.

Persona 4 Golden can be bought for just $11.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix 2p16s

This one is more expensive than most games on this list, but it also includes four Kingdom Hearts games and two movies. Another classic RPG series, Kingdom Hearts blends Final Fantasy and Disney characters in an action RPG with a completely unique battle system. The Remix collection includes the first two mainline games as well as Birth By Sleep, Re:chain of Memories, and a cutscene collection from 358/2, and Re:coded. It’s a great starting point in the series.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix costs $29.99 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Final Fantasy VII 171d2g

When it comes to classic RPGs there isn’t anything more iconic than Final Fantasy VII. You can also purchase the remakes during the Steam Spring Sale, but the original game is available at an incredible price. Take on the epic adventure, which sees Cloud and his clan travel across the continent, visiting different towns and cultures, and discovering who the true enemy is along the way, with a deep turn-based battle system.

The original Final Fantasy VII is just $4.79 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Nier: Automata 27205w

If you like RPGs that challenge your preconceptions, and break the fourth wall with unexpected twists, then action RPG Nier: Automata is for you. Not only does it look gorgeous even with its fast-paced combat system, but it combines this with its well-built world, and engaging storyline. With multiple endings that require multiple playthroughs to see them all, Nier: Automata asks you to question what you believe about the genre.

Nier: Automata costs just $15.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Live A Live 4v294

A gorgeous 2DHD remake of a classic turn-based RPG, Live A Live tells eight separate stories across different time periods, protagonists, and gaming genres, before they all align for one final adventure. Live A Live is a fighting game, a tower defense game, a stealth game, and a visual novel as well as an RPG, and it blends everything together beautifully and seamlessly. A must-play older game that everyone should experience.

Live A Live is available for $19.99 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Lies of P 2y1y3z

A more modern game than most on this list – hence the price – we’ve added Lies of P as our soulslike of choice as it’s a great entry point for this subsection of the RPG genre. Far more story heavy than other soulslike games, Lies of P tells a steampunk Pinocchio story with challenging combat, and choices that have major outcomes on the story.

Lies of P is on sale for $35.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Trails of Cold Steel 17145

Starting in 1989, there are few series that are as long-lasting as The Legend of Heroes, and almost all of these games are on offer as part of the Steam Spring Sale. Trails of Cold Steel is one of the best games to jump into as it includes a four game story arc with a satisfying start and end. Once you get into the turn-based RPG series there are so many other games to explore that your wallet might just regret grabbing this first game.

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel currently costs $19.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 283m6h

One of the most popular RPGs from the PS3 era, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch combines whimsical storytelling, and the gorgeous art style of Studio Ghibli. Evocative voice acting brings the whole world to life as you feel as if you are living in a Ghibli movie while playing this turn-based RPG. This is the perfect game if you’re looking for somewhere whimsical to get lost in and escape.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch costs $7.49 during the Steam Spring Sale.

The Steam Spring Sale is on now, and ends on March 20.

Kingdom Hearts Switch Server Congestion

Square Enix has released an update that will now display the server congestion status for the Kingdom Hearts cloud versions released for the Nintendo Switch. This will allow consumers playing the Kingdom Hearts cloud versions on the Nintendo Switch to check server congestion. As server congestion could potentially affect gameplay. Additionally, the Version 1.0.3 update for the Kingdom Hearts cloud versions has added an additional feature to Kingdom Hearts III + ReMind Cloud Version.

Players will now have the opportunity to pick between "Performance" and "Graphics" modes when playing the Nintendo Switch version of the game. However, it will still function off of the same system as the other Kingdom Hearts Cloud Version games, which means server congestion could still affect performance.

The cloud versions are bundles that include more than a handful of Kingdom Hearts games. For example, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix includes Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. However, the Kingdom Hearts III Cloud Version only comes with the ReMind DLC. Additionally, consumers can purchase all of the games available through the cloud with the Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud collection.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMixKingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + ReMind Cloud Version are available for Nintendo Switch. The standard versions of the games are also available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Kingdom Hearts Switch Cloud version

What’s better than playing Kingdom Hearts on a PlayStation or Xbox platform or PC? Kingdom Hearts it on one of those other options and the Switch. In many circles, Kingdom Hearts coming to the Switch was long discussed. Considering the series began 20 years ago and has been available on seemingly every new generation of consoles, it makes sense that a Nintendo release would be the next step. What came as a bit of surprise, though, was that installments would arrive on the Switch as Cloud-based games. Rather than ing them to your system, you play a streamed version that just isn’t as reliable as having the game directly on it, ready to play whenever and wherever.

Square Enix divided the games into three packages – Kingdom Hearts - HD: 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind DLC. However, I didn’t pick a single one up until the day one patch had been out, so I could ideally play the optimal versions. As it turns out, it was still a frustrating task and waiting for the patch didn’t matter all that much.

Kingdom Hearts Switch Cloud version

The Good 1t2e3v

The accessibility that comes with the Switch versions is great. As is the ability to play an entire series on a console that’s newer and in the hands of millions. This is a nostalgia grab that works. Even I’ll it that watching the Kingdom Hearts opening again and listening to “Simple and Clean” almost had me hooked. There's also something nice about seeing the games that defined gaming for you get newer console releases and upgrades. It's validating when the things important to you receive some love.

For the most part, the opening movies for each game looked great. Outside of the release weekend, I didn’t experience much stuttering or lag during them. The more recently released games also seemed to be the most consistent, in of gameplay. Gameplay wasn’t perfect, mind you, but it definitely became more playable after that initial launch period. Unfortunately, that’s about all I can say regarding the benefits of these games on the Switch.

The Not So Good 304p11

The biggest problem with Kingdom Hearts on the Switch goes back to the Cloud service. Even after the patch, the games can lag depending on the state of the server or, more importantly, the state of your internet. Losing connection as you play means losing any progress you’ve made. These are old games. Which means there isn’t a guaranteed autosave to cover you if your internet decides to go out or stutter. Related to that is the fact that you can’t pause the game and put your Switch in sleep mode for a minute or let it go to sleep on its own. I often play games as I’m multitasking, and letting my system fall asleep while I take a break is something I do often.

I also love having a Switch simply because it gives me the ability to play games freely no matter where I am. The Cloud takes those options away completely. Time with the games is tethered to a strong internet connection and play sessions that lack freedom.

Connection and Cloud issues aside, even movement was off in a lot of the games. Trying to jump and run around was awkward. Hitting combos and finishing moves during fights felt oddly slow. I’ve played the Kingdom Hearts games on other consoles, and I know the controls sometimes feel weightless. This was different. It felt like a system struggling to keep up with inputs.

Kingdom Hearts Switch Cloud version

Really, I didn’t enjoy my time playing any of the games. I don’t believe they’re worth the time and money they require, and I doubt I’ll ever pick them up again. Regardless, I can see a lot of people looking for that nostalgic experience wanting these ports. Square Enix has been able to successfully port the series multiple times for a reason. When it comes to a beloved series, a lot of fans will understandably buy it whenever, and however, they can. The Cloud versions also give those without access to the other console releases a chance to finally play Kingdom Hearts. But again, I can’t say this is the version of the game new players should start with or one long-time fans should settle for. Plus, if something doesn’t work as well as it should, is it accessible? Not really.

Kingdom Hearts - HD: 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind DLC are currently available on the Nintendo Switch as Cloud Versions. A complete edition that includes all three collections, titled Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece, is also available.

Kingdom Hearts Switch Cloud version Really, I didn’t enjoy my time playing any of the games.

Kingdom Hearts Switch

Nintendo Switch owners got a taste of Kingdom Hearts when Sora ed the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, but soon it'll be time for the full meal. The previously announced Switch port of the Kingdom Hearts games will release on February 10, 2022, according to an announcement from Square Enix. The company also ed a Kingdom Hearts Switch trailer to promote the launch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W12cQ7oR8zY

Though the Switch already hosts the rhythm game Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, the new Switch collection adds the rest of the franchise. That consists of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix Cloud Version, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version, and Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind Cloud Version. All can be purchased separately, though they're available as a bundle called Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud.

The "cloud version" distinction is key, as all the Kingdom Hearts Switch games (other than Melody of Memory) require an internet connection to play. This means that the game will stream in on a server rather than being ed and installed to the Switch console's local storage. Other Switch cloud games include Hitman 3, Control, and A Plague Tale: Innocence.

The cloud editions of the games collect the following franchise titles, along with their separate pricing on the North American Switch eShop:

  • Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix - USD $39.99 ($31.99 launch discount)
    • Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
    • Kingom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
    • Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days HD Remastered Cinematics
    • Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix
    • Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix
    • Kingom Hearts Re:Coded HD Remastered Cinematics
  • Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue - USD $49.99 ($39.99 launch discount)
    • Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
    • Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep - A fragmentary age -
    • Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover Movie
  • Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind$49.99 ($39.99 launch discount)

The Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud collects all of the above titles as a single purchase of USD $89.99 (with a $71.99 launch discount price).

Kingdom Hearts cloud editions go on sale for Nintendo Switch on February 10, 2022. The games are also available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Kingdom Hearts PC

The Kingdom Hearts series so far has arrived on PC, bringing with it more than a handful of games (and games converted to cinematics) for players to enjoy. With Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts III + ReMind, and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, players can experience the entire story ranging from PlayStation 2 titles to the current generation of consoles. However, some of these games do come with some caveats when running on lower-end machines, specifically the most recent releases.

Naturally, the games that were released for PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable perform better on laptops and are less intensive on lower-end PCs. The titles available in Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix had barely any hiccups. Controller access is immediately available, which was great since keyboard and mouse controls aren’t very comfortable for me. The cutscenes played without any issue or any noticeable dip in framerate, and the game worked perfectly even when I eventually got to the 1,000 Heartless battle in Kingdom Hearts II. The same cannot be said for the massive Heartless fight in Kingdom Hearts III, however.

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory functions well enough on a PC too, with s able to switch between controller and keyboard and mouse controls seamlessly. I even tested using both at the same time, which is totally viable if you’re into that kind of thing. However, keep in mind that if you are using a wireless controller, there is occasional input lag. Additionally, you are able to pick between Japanese or English audio tracks, which was great to see and is available throughout the other PC ports. I didn’t experience any issues with lag, even during segments that had me bombarded with note upon note when tackling songs on Proud difficulty. I was honestly surprised about this, especially since I’m running the game on a laptop and not a sturdier desktop PC. Either way, it was an enjoyable experience that wasn’t hampered by any glaring issues.

Kingdom Hearts PC

However, when I got to Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, specifically Aqua’s chapter, I noticed a bit of slowdown and lag. This is probably due to the way the areas and the effects are rendered. That being said, the games that relied on less complicated lighting and rendering tech worked perfectly fine.

The same could be said for Kingdom Hearts III, as I faced similar issues. Specifically, I experienced some slowdown in areas where there was an overabundance of red or fire effects, which I expected would happen. This is largely due to my machine, so I would advise those playing on lower-end machines to lower their settings for the game. Keyboard and mouse controls are manageable, but I still preferred using the controller. Just like Melody of Memory, s can select from a total of three different control schemes to accommodate keyboards from different regions.

Across the board, loading times were alright. I was running off of an SSD, which more than likely improved the times. They weren’t significantly long enough to warrant any complaints, but they could potentially be longer when running directly off of your hard drive or on a PC with low memory or at the bare minimum requirements.

Accessibility options come in the form of subtitles and difficulty options, and a few other selections with the exception of some titles. You cannot reassign keys or controller configurations for Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, which could become an issue for some players. At most, you can adjust your screen size, but that is effectively where accessibility options begin and end. There are more accessibility features for the other titles, which do include full keyboard and gamepad customization, and that was great to see at the very least.

All in all, the Kingdom Hearts series PC ports are functional and work relatively well on gaming laptops and lower-end desktop PCs. They are a great introduction to the series and an even better way to dive into it head first. However, some titles lack important accessibility features that feel like an oversight on Square Enix’s part when it comes to PC ports. That being said, if you're looking to play through the series for the first time, this is a great opportunity to do so. And for those who already love the Kingdom Hearts and purchased the titles previously, you'll find a perfectly functional port that will you allow to reexperience these stories on a new platform.

Last week in Japan, it was a bit of a quiet week for sales with Arc of Alchemist as the lone new release in the top-20. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of February 4 to February 10, 2019.

The #1 game of the week is New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 38,482 units sold for Switch to end Kingdom Hearts III’s streak on top at two weeks. However, Kingdom Hearts III wasn’t far behind with 35,450 units sold on the PS4 to chart at #2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate followed at #3 with 31,174 units sold on Switch.

Resident Evil 2 was #4 with 22,670 units sold on PS4, and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Let’s Go, Eevee! kept the #5 spot with 17,596 units sold on Switch. Arc of Alchemist was the only new title in the top-20, and it charted at #14 with 3,328 units sold on PS4. It’s also worth noting that Super Mario Party sold 11,863 units to chart at #7 and to also hit the million-seller milestone in Japanese retail with a total of 1,007,947 copies sold thus far.

In hardware sales, we saw an overall decline with it being the first full week of February. The PlayStation 4 sold 11,583 units plus an additional 8,111 from PS4 Pro models to combine for 19,694 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch sold 61,280 units to make up 70.4% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,379,142 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

The Nintendo Switch sold 61,280 units to make up 70.4% of all hardware sales.
